News from the York Diocese
Early in 2016 the well-loved and highly respected Head
arranger at York Minster retired and it proved to be very
difficult to find a replacement for her.
Unfortunately at much the same time there was a great
deal of sensational news in the media about the sacking
of the Minster bell ringers. There was also a statement
on Look North that the flower arrangers had been sorted
out. An article in a daily paper said that the flower
arrangers were to undergo fresh training. This obviously
caused much consternation among the groups which
provide flowers and talents throughout the year.
At the Minster Flower Arrangers Annual Meeting all
this was vehemently denied. The Precentor assured the
arrangers of their importance to the Minster and said
that the source of the news items was a mystery to the
Dean and Chapter. You cannot always believe what the
media says.
However, new security arrangements, problems over
parking and a tightening up of times to suit the new
head arranger have made relations much less relaxed.
