Farage awaits a fitting gong
FORMER Ukip leader Nigel Farage has
denied that he would like a knighthood,
despite sparking a civil war in
his party over the gong.
Farage is trying to force Ukip’s only
MP, Douglas Carswell, out of the party
after reports that Carswell tried to
block an honour for Farage.
Carswell denies it, but that hasn’t
stopped Farage escalating his campaign
against the MP.
But of course, it’s not because Nigel
wants his award – he told BBC Radio
yesterday that was “not particularly”
interested in becoming a Sir.
What about the House of Lords for
Ukip’s anti-establishment hero?
“I would not want a peerage,” Farage
declared, before casually pausing.
“If something else came along I
might accept it,” he subtly hinted.
The hunt for something else begins.
No more red carpet
for PWC’s auditors
JASPER JOLLY
@jjpjolly
THE AUDITORS behind the Oscars Best
Picture mix-up will likely never tread
the red carpet again, the president of
the Academy of Motion Picture Arts
and Sciences has said.
PWC’s Brian Cullinan and Martha
Ruiz will not reprise their starring
roles administering the vote, Cheryl
Boone Isaacs told the Associated Press.
PWC could still lose the job altogether,
Boone Isaacs said, with the position
currently under review after
the biggest mistake in Oscar’s history.
Cullinan gave presenters Faye Dunaway
and Warren Beatty the envelope
for Best Actress rather than Best Picture,
resulting in pre-ceremony
favourite La La Land being announced
as the winner to a global audience on
Sunday night.
The error was only corrected after
two producers had finished their acceptance
speech, with Moonlight finally
announced as the correct
winner. Boone Isaacs’ statements
came after Beatty called on the Academy
to “publicly clarify what happened
as soon as possible”.
The Academy said on Monday it
“will determine what actions are appropriate
going forward” in its relationship
with PWC, which has
administered the Oscar’s voting
process for 83 years.
PWC apologised for the error, saying:
“We sincerely apologise to Moonlight,
La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye
Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the
error that was made during the award
announcement for Best Picture.
“We are currently investigating how
this could have happened, and deeply
regret that this occurred.”
Academia risks groupthink from
left-wing majority, survey finds
MARK SANDS
@MkSands
THE UK’S academic institutions are
dominated by left-wing thinkers, a
new survey has found.
An estimated three-quarters of
academics are left wing liberals, so
says the Adam Smith Institute,
which said it reveals the dangers of
groupthink in the UK’s universities.
The figures are based on a
December 2015 survey of academics
by Times Higher Education, which
asked university staff who they
intended to vote for in the upcoming
election.
Around 75 per cent of academics
said they would support either
Labour, the Lib Dems or the Green
Party, but only 11 per cent said they
backed the Tories, and less than 0.5
per cent were Ukip supporters.
ASI head of research Ben
Southwood said: “No one is
suggesting quotas, but we should be
mindful of too much intellectual
homogeneity.”
