PRESIDENT`S
MESSAGE
Hello Members,
SCI convention is once again over for this year. As I attended
various meetings, there was a lot of talk at convention this
year about the constant attacks on your right to hunt in North
America. These attacks in Canada and especially British
Columbia and Alberta are at an all time high.
B.C. is about to have a provincial election and the GO ABC
is raising the alarm about a very possible NDP government
getting back in. The NDP have promised to close the grizzly
bear hunt in British Columbia, thus ever stopping the chance
of Alberta’s grizzly hunt from ever reopening. Something that
would have happened had we not elected an NDP government
in Alberta. At the Board Meeting, SCI Chapters offered up
$60,000 to help Go ABC to try and stop the grizzly closure in
British Columbia.
Back here in Alberta there is a Calgary based man who has
started an organization to end trophy hunting in Africa, and
as well right here in your back yard Alberta. He is well funded
and is a serious threat to our rights as hunters (read more
about this in the newsletter).
I believe the time is in front of us to support hunting like
never before. Please consider donating to the United Hunters
Fund, supporting SCI and our local chapter. Your way of life is
depending on it. Fight the antis who are so eager to attack it.
Good Hunting
OUR CHAPTER ACHIEVEMENTS
2015-2016
Through the 2015/2016 year the SCI – Drayton Valley Chapter experienced great successes and attained huge
goals in support of SCI’s mission toward hunting conservation, education and humanitarian endeavors. One
of our most memorable occasions was the privilege of being awarded the 2015 International Chapter of The
Year Award.
We continue our pride and commitment toward our major humanitarian project; our Fishing Dock for seniors
residing within care centres and individuals with disabilities. Our local Board and Chapter members have
contributed in excess of 800 volunteer hours toward the operation and maintenance of the dock this year.
Over the summer months we have been very fortunate to have a variety of user groups visit the dock, with
some seniors groups travelling from two hours away to visit our facility and enjoy the benefits it has to offer.
In total this summer we have had over 200 individuals visit the dock!
In support of SCIFs mission on a global scale, our Chapter was one again extremely pleased to be involved in
the delivery of numerous Blue Bags this past year to various third world countries.
As part of our commitment to sustain our hunting heritage and providing our youth the opportunity to enjoy
the great outdoors, we facilitated a youth hunter training program in April 2016 within our community of
Drayton Valley. This program is free of charge to youth 12 to 17 years of age. This year we had 14 youth
participants, 2 adults and 3 volunteers from our Board of Directors participate in the program.
The Drayton Valley Chapter of Safari Club International is very proud to continue their support of the National
Archery in Schools Program (NASP). Over the past year we maintained our current commitment to the
program by way of supporting needed upgrades to current school participants kits. We also supported the St.
Anthony’s Drayton Valley Mini-Shoot through the provision of trophies and medals for the youth participants.
Of significant mention is our involvement in the coordination of the 2016 NASP Provincial Shoot right here
in Drayton Valley in partnership with the Brazeau Bowbenders and AHEIA. This shoot saw over 1000+ youth
archers participate in the 4 day event held within the WellHouse Supply building. This venue was provided to
us through the generosity of Judy Sweet. It was an amazing event! Drayton Valley is extremely proud to be
one of the most involved and recognized NASP communities in Alberta. Since its inception our Chapter has
committed in excess of $110,000 toward the NASP program. It is our greatest hope that this program brings a
new level of enjoyment to those students who may not have had the chance to shoot target archery, and that
our local youth’s participation in the program may spark an enjoyment for the outdoors and all that it has to
offer! Our goal is that this outdoor educational opportunity will impact children for years to come and raise
awareness for Safari Club International and its educational efforts. The NASP Program is a great addition to our
educational system and we hope it brings great enjoyment to all involved!
Over the past year our conservation efforts have focused on aiding Safari Club International in their endeavors
toward science base conservation worldwide.
To you, our members and supporters we thank you for your many contributions. It is your commitment and
support of the SCI Drayton Valley Chapter that has contributed to the accomplishments that have been achieved.
If you are not yet a member of SCI, please do consider joining SCI tonight to help the only organization that will
protect your freedom to hunt.
SCI - DRAYTON VALLEY HOSTING
The SCI Drayton Valley Chapter is excited to once again be hosting the NASP Provincial Tournament.
The 2017 event will take place in the community of Drayton Valley from April 26-29. SCI Drayton
Valley, in partnership with the Brazeau BowBenders and AHEIA, will be coordinating this event.
The 2017 NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program) Provincial Tournament will welcome
over 900 archers in Grades 4-12 from our local community and across Alberta as these represent
their schools and compete for top prizes in individual and team categories.
We are excited about our new venue to host the NASP Provincial shoot. This year’s event will
take place at the vacant WellHouse building situated at 5416 Industrial Road (across from RCMP
detachment). We extend our gratitude to Judy Sweet for making this venue available to us.
The archery tournament will feature some wonderful athletes, but in addition spectators and
competitors will be welcome to participate in fishing, hunting, and archery games available at
the location. We welcome you to come take in the event!
To host an event of this magnitude takes a number of individuals. If you or someone you know
might be interested in volunteering their time to assist on tournament dates please reach out to
our NASP Coordinator, Sarah Hermann by email at Sarah.hermann@servus.ca.
SHARED ON BEHALF OF THE SCI CALGARY CHAPTER
SCI NEEDS YOUR HELP TO STAND UP FOR HUNTING
Friends,
We’ve all seen the increasing attacks on hunting
in Canada and beyond by professional activists
like Mike Donovan and Ban Trophy Hunting Ltd
who have invoked the holocaust, slavery, rape and
wartime violence to describe lawful hunting.
As an organization, SCI-Calgary has taken Donovan
head on and was successful in getting a court
ruling that has required him to remove defamatory
comments from social media, and in the same
ruling the Alberta courts held that trophy hunting
is a lawful commercial activity.
Donovan and his organization are now seeking to
ban trophy hunting in Alberta and British Columbia,
bringing this fight much closer to home.
Working with the SCI Canada, SCI-Calgary has
just launched the ‘United Hunters Fund’ http://
unitedhuntersfund.com in an effort to educate
and advocate for hunting, fishing and trapping
in Canada and directly take on threats like those
posed by Donovan and his many supporters.
YOUTH HUNTER TRAINING COURSE
As you’re well aware, unlike Mike Donovan and
the anti-hunting activists, we are not a well funded
organization that benefits from large, anonymous,
agenda driven donations. We rely on the support
of real people who share our mission.
Today, I’m asking for your help in raising funds
for the United Hunters Fund so that we can stand
up for hunting and fight back against the lies and
attacks we face together.
We’ve set a fundraising target of $100,000 over
the next 90 days to give us a strong starting point
and I’m hoping you will join this effort by donating
what you can through our crowdfunding site
https://unitedhuntersfund.com/donate.
While you’re on our Donations page, please click
‘share campaign’ and share our page with your
friends on Facebook or Twitter as well.
It is extremely important that as hunters we stand
together and stand up for hunting. If not us, who
will?
SCI Drayton Valley Chapter will be offering a
Youth Hunter Training Course in the Spring of
2017. The course dates are as follows:
March 22
March 23
March 24
5:00-8:00pm
8:30am-5:00pm
The Hunter Training Course is being offered
free of charge to youth 12 to 17 years
of age. If you have a child, or know of
