Dr. Rosemarie Sampson’s face is one known
to many at the Mount. And you can
guarantee she remembers yours.
It is almost impossible to believe, but
Sampson is retiring.
Her tenure at MSVU, which spans the terms
of eight Presidents, saw many changes and
much growth on campus. She finds it difficult
to pick a favourite role, but admits teaching
was something she enjoyed very much.
This summer, the MSVU Art Gallery will
offer visitors the opportunity to learn
more about contemporary visual art
from near and far.
Showing from June 16 - August 12,
Elegies and Effigies (Material Remains)
brings together artists from across
Nova Scotia who work in a variety of
media. This exhibition focuses on art
that emphasizes the traces of things –
impressions left in paint, marks left on
the sea bed, fading flowers and beach
combings – works when presented
together produce a nuanced, poetic
impression.
The show highlights the aesthetic
ideas and technical accomplishment of

“Every time I went into a role, it was a
challenge.” She lives by the philosophy that
‘you do what you do because it’s there to be
done – and you do it well’.
Her plans include spending more time with
her husband of 27 years, Burton MacDonald,
who has recently retired from teaching at
St. Francis Xavier University. She has even
scheduled her first golf lesson.

considerable isolation from one
another.

Rising star Micah Lexier will visit from
New York as the Guest Curator to
showcase work by three of his favourite
contemporary artists. From June 23 -
September 16, the Gallery will feature
For Example, an exquisite compilation
of works by the three artists. Works by
Kim Moodie (a teeming, edge-to-edge
drawing), Jeannie Thib (stacked and
composed felt shapes) and Joy Walker
(silk screened cloth) will be housed in
their own vitrines and may be viewed
from above, instead of in the
traditional, wall-mounted fashion.
