SOWELA Summer Camp Schedule Expands into New Areas for 2017
The Office of Workforce Development at SOWELA Technical Community
College is pleased to announce its Summer Camp line up for 2017. Two new
camps are part of the schedule, including Young Aviator Aeronautical Camp
and Graphic Art Camp. Credentialed faculty lead each camp, which provides
children with the opportunity to explore a possible career path and learn
new skills.

Get Your Motor Running to the Second Annual SOWELA
Foundation Flying Tigers Car Show Presented by Sasol
On Saturday, April 8, 2017, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the SOWELA Foundation
will host the Flying Tigers Car Show presented by Sasol with all proceeds
benefiting student scholarships and enhancement. Tickets are $5 per person
and kids 12 and under are free. The event is open to the public and will be
held at SOWELA Technical Community College, 3820 Senator J. Bennett
Johnston Ave., Lake Charles, LA 70615.
Automobile enthusiasts are encouraged to showcase their vehicles. Early
bird registration is $30 per vehicle and day-of registration is $35 per vehicle.
Awards will be given in a variety of categories, and vehicle registrants are
eligible to win customized car part trophies. Vehicle registrants will also
receive a car show t-shirt, a food/drink coupon, and an engraved Flying Tiger
coaster.
New this year is the Flying Cubs Kids Zone, which includes fun jumps, remote
control car races, an obstacle course, and much more. In addition, attendees
can enjoy great food, first responder vehicle displays, and other activities.
Door prizes from area restaurants and businesses will be given throughout
the day.

success – success in their studies, their college experience, and ultimately,
their careers. The SOWELA Foundation works with donors that invest in our
students through financial contributions for scholarships. With events such
as The Flying Tigers Car Show we raise awareness of our students, programs,
and college, while also raising funds for scholarships and enhancement,”
stated Marianne White, Executive Director of Institutional Advancement,
Alumni Affairs, and Community Engagement.
Many of SOWELA’s student work full or part time while attending college
and juggling family obligations. Because of this, students may struggle to
cover the costs of attending college. The car show helps to alleviate financial
barriers that may prevent students from achieving their higher education
and career goals.
SOWELA Foundation promotes community stewardship and empowers
students of SOWELA Technical Community College to launch their careers
through scholarships, professorships, staff development, technological
advancements, program improvements, and capital expansion. Donations
go directly to the College to help provide students with a world class
education in Southwest Louisiana.
Culinary Camp: June 5-9 or 19-23, 2017, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., grades 5th-8th.
Cost is $185. This cooking camp for young chefs teaches children to make
different breakfast and lunch recipes.
Kids in the Kitchen: June 12-16 or 26-30, 2017, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., grades 1st-
4th. Cost is $185. Campers learn to prepare and cook breakfast and lunch
with Chef Roy Angelle.
Grandparent and Me Culinary Camp: June 17-19, 2017, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.,
grades 1st-8th. Cost is $100. Grandparents and grandkids create wonderful
meals and memories together.
Young Aviator Aeronautical Camp: June 12-16, 2017, for grades 4th and
5th. June 19-23, 2017, for grades 6th-7th. Camp is held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Cost is $130. Campers learn how airports operate, build an electrical circuit
while using an aircraft wiring schematic, discover how different aircraft fly,
and much more!
Wacky 3D Printing Camp: June 5-9, 2017, from 8 a.m. to Noon for grades
6th- 8th. Cost is $279. Campers learn to setup and printout 3D designs and
take home their own 3D printout.
Fusion Welding Camp: June 26-30 and July 10-14, 2017, from 8 a.m. to
2 p.m. for grades 8th-12th. Cost is $279. Campers learn welding basics,
including key techniques and safety guidelines.
Young Graphic Designer Camp: June 5-9, 2017, for grades 6th- 8th. Cost
is $230. Take your artistic skills to the computer. Campers will learn basic
concepts in graphic design and print their creations. They will also design a
graphic t-shirt.
Culinary Camps include breakfast and lunch while all other camps include
