Animals play a variety of roles in our lives, from workmates and
exercise buddies to confidantes and companions. They assist
us, protect us, inspire us, and provide us with a steady supply
of unconditional love. But, formally or informally, many animals
also serve another important role: as ambassadors—for their
species, or for programs, initiatives, and organizations.
My own experience with the special impact of animals dates
back to 1995, when one of our family cats, Merlin, showed me
what a difference a feline could make to a person’s health and
well-being. My young daughter, who was later diagnosed with
Tourrette’s Syndrome, had trouble sleeping at night. A healthcare
professional advised us to have Merlin, to whom my daughter was very attached,
sleep with her at night. Although Merlin had never before been willing to sleep on
anyone’s bed, he willingly curled up with her, helping bring her the sense of calm she
needed to sleep. This eight-pound, idiosyncratic former barn cat inspired my commitment
to animal welfare, and was in large part responsible for the path my life has taken
and the work I do today.
Although Merlin is no longer with us, my husband and I welcomed another animal ambassador
into our lives a year and a half ago. Sazzy is a pit bull mix who arrived at the
Humane Rescue Alliance covered with infected puncture wounds, the result of a dog
attack in her former home. Her jaw was shattered, for reasons we will never know, and
she ultimately lost a large portion of her lower jaw.
But Sazzy’s history and physical differences haven’t stopped her! Today, she serves as
an unofficial “staff” member of the Humane Rescue Alliance. If I am in my office, she
will often spend the day with me, making me smile, helping me focus, and easing my
stress. I’m not the only beneficiary of Sazzy’s infectious good humor and indomitable
spirit. Visitors—some of whom may have been cautious around pit bulls or animals
with physical deformities—are won over by her exuberance and joie de vivre. Sazzy is
truly an ambassador for animals with physical challenges, and for shelter animals in
general.
But she is not alone. This issue of Alliance highlights several other animal ambassadors.
There’s Seri, a pit bull mix who was rescued from starvation on DC’s streets and is
now introducing people to the concept of companion dogs in the Central Asian country
of Kyrgyzstan. Another international traveler, a former shelter cat named Beautiful,
serves as a “diplocat” at the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka. Here at HRA, a black Lab named
Nigel was the face of our education efforts for many years, helping spread the message
of compassion for animals to schoolchildren throughout the District of Columbia.
And last, but certainly not least, Basil, a rabbit adopted from HRA, has become something
of a celebrity, encouraging people in his neighborhood and (thanks to social
media) across the globe to consider bunnies and other small animals as companions.
These are just a few examples. Every day, in every corner of the world, animals are
opening hearts and minds and reminding us just how lucky we are to share our lives
with them.

FROM SHELTER KITTY TO 'DIPLOCAT'

Six years ago the Humane Rescue Alliance took in a stunning,
white, fluffy cat from an overcrowded partner shelter.
Her name, appropriately, was Beautiful. It was love at first
sight for me, and I took Beautiful home, where she quickly
settled into her new life as a DC
house cat.

doubt that Beautiful would go
with us. She quickly adjusted to
a new environment, and even
helped us find calm in the chaos of packing and unpacking.
(She was positively thrilled to have so many boxes to jump
into!) Today, Beautiful is thriving in her life as a “diplocat,”
helping eliminate any job-related stress we may encounter
during our overseas assignment.

And it turns out my husband and I aren’t the only ones benefiting
from Beautiful’s unique form of diplomacy. The enchanting
country of Sri Lanka certainly has many pet owners,
but having a cat live in your home is still a somewhat novel
idea. I was asked once if she was
a dog and another person asked
if I had to “walk” her. She was
even the very first cat a Maldivian
friend of ours had ever touched!

No matter what their past experience
or frame of reference, everyone
who has the opportunity
to meet Beautiful is very taken with her, and she loves all the
attention. We are grateful to the Humane Rescue Alliance
for bringing such a joyful cat into our lives—one who enjoys
moving, doesn’t mind long plane rides, and has a big heart
for people from all over the world.

Basil Adds Spice to
Lives Everywhere

When I went to the Humane Rescue Alliance
(HRA) to look for a bunny, I never
expected to end up with a celebrity. I was just
looking for a small furry friend to keep me company
along with my two dogs.
I remember walking into the Oglethorpe Street Adoption
Center and seeing a big white rabbit with cool blue eyes. She
looked uneasy and a little timid, which was understandable
because the shelter can get hectic at times. I asked to pick
her up or pet her but at the time Basil was too scared; I waited
by the open den door for a while and was finally able to pet
her once before she hopped away. Even though this interaction
wasn’t exactly love at first sight, I felt a certain connection
to Basil and decided to bring her home, where she quickly
stole the hearts of my family members.
Basil was very scared at first, refusing to eat out of my hand
and hiding from me in her cage. I was a little discouraged
but never gave up and, little by little, she began to trust me. I
studied a lot about rabbit language so I could better understand
Basil and her needs. One of my favorite moments was
when she licked me for the first time, which means, “I love
you and I trust you.” We’re now best buddies and spend most
of our time together.
Basil has become an active community member in my town.
The family across the street adores her; when the mother
sees Basil, she tells her kids so they can come out and say
hello. People have stopped their cars to ask questions or
roll down the windows for their kids to see, sometimes even
parking their car to get out and say hi to Basil. One day, nearly
20 elementary school kids approached to meet Basil. I told
them that as long as they were quiet they could say hi; all
of them eagerly whispered while taking turns petting her. I’m
pretty sure every one of them went home that day asking
their parents for a bunny.
People often share their sense of humor when seeing me
walk Basil. One older man commented, “funny looking dog,”
and another person told me that seeing a bunny on a leash
had made their day. I love seeing all the smiles Basil brings to
the community.
Last summer I took Basil on my beach vacation. Since she
loves going on walks and hopping through the grass, I wondered
how she would like the beach. Well, she absolutely

loved it! The sand fascinated her and she spent most of her
time digging holes until she was satisfied with one and decided
to flop out. While there, Basil attracted a large crowd of
fans. The lifeguard came up to greet her, lots of little kids wanted
to see her hop around, and she even had her picture taken
with a baby who sat there smiling as he stroked her soft fur.
I’d been keeping HRA adoptions staff updated about Basil’s life
ever since adopting her, so I sent them a picture of her at the
beach. When they asked if they could use it for social media
purposes, I said, “of course.” That exposure led to articles about
Basil in The Dodo and thelittlethings.com.
Although I never expected any of this when I adopted Basil,
it’s been a fascinating experience and a rewarding one. Small
animals are often overlooked at shelters, and I’m very honored
that Basil has become an ambassador for them. I hope her story
convinces people that animals of all sizes and species can
make wonderful companions.

CLASSROOM CANINES
Dogs bring humane education to life

When my family and I set out to adopt a dog 12 years ago, I was insistent
that the dog meet specific criteria. Our new family member had
to get along with everyone—kids, cats, men, people in uniforms—and
be a great companion for a 7-year-old boy who wanted a dog more
than anything in the world. And there was something else; our dog
had to be comfortable visiting classrooms.
The Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) humane education program is
curriculum driven, with all lessons based on underlying themes of
compassion, kindness, and social action. And who better to encourage
empathy than a dog? So, after months of looking, we met and
adopted Nigel.
This large Labrador retriever joined our family in December. By January
he and I had graduated from basic manners training class and in
the spring we were visiting school children all over the District of Columbia.
Nigel sat quietly in the center of classrooms while I recounted
how he had been grossly neglected and would have starved to death
had a passerby not reported seeing an emaciated dog chained to an
iron post. Students listened in disbelief when I told them that Nigel—
who was nearing a healthy 80 pounds when he made his first school
appearance—had weighed just 48 pounds on the day that he was
rescued. They were mesmerized when I placed a piece of cheese
(a favorite treat) on his front paw and he waited patiently until I said,
“take it.” The youngsters and I then discussed why a former starvation
victim would comply with such a counterintuitive request and a
whole lesson on trust ensued.
Two years ago Nigel retired. Nevertheless, kids continued to greet
me with, “Where’s Nigel?” or “When will Nigel visit?” Their pleas were
a constant reminder that while the books, PowerPoint presentations,
and role playing activities were meaningful, interacting with a living,
breathing, fur-covered goodwill ambassador was critical to the heart
of our humane education efforts. And while Nigel could never be replaced,
substitutes had to be recruited.
Currently, humane education program volunteer Jennifer Alfonso
brings her dog Mozart (another former cruelty case) into the classroom.
Mozart responds to a laundry list of fun tricks and basic obedience
commands. Students laugh hysterically when he confidently
hits the Staples “easy” button—made popular in the retailer’s commercials—on
command. The interactive session allows them to participate
in classroom training sessions, asking Mozart to do anything
from jump through hula hoops to join a conga line to take a nap.

Other recent additions to the school visitation program
are Zeus, Shelter Manager Allison Bundock’s
rescue dog; Dolly, Director of Finance and Administration
Alison Putnam’s therapy dog; Digby, Behavior
and Training Director Alexandra Dilley’s adopted
golden retriever; and Missi, volunteer Lin Lawson’s
shelter alum. Like Mozart, Digby has a long list of
impressive tricks that he is always eager to demonstrate,
while Missi, a Shih Tzu/Maltese mix named
for Mississippi, the state from which she came, happily
performs “dance and twirl” for adoring onlookers.
Students stare in disbelief at photographs of
Zeus in his former surroundings—starving and tied
up in a dark, dirty basement—struggling to comprehend
how people could treat him so cruelly.
These and other animal ambassadors help bring
humane education lessons to life for DC’s young
residents. Their stories inspire students to care
about animals, encourage them to act when they
see animals in need of help, and share the lessons
they learn with others. They also have youngsters
participating in HRA’s humane education program
asking, “Who’s visiting today?”

A NEW LIFE FOR SERI
Former Starvation Victim Brings Joy at Home and Abroad

On April 24 it will have been two years since
Seri and I made a home together. During
that time he has become a very important
part of my life.
Seri (his name was Mason when I adopted
him) was picked up by the Humane Rescue
Alliance (HRA) as a stray. He was emaciated
and dehydrated, had cuts and scratches
all over his body, and was covered in urine
and feces. His condition was so bad that he
was transported to Friendship Hospital for
Animals for IV fluids and supportive care.
Thanks to this treatment—and follow-up
care at an HRA foster home—Seri began his
transformation into the handsome, healthy
dog he is today.
When I met Seri, I didn’t know much about
his past but I could still see the results of
abuse, neglect, and malnourishment. It was
such a joy to help him in his journey to happiness.
But as much as I did for him, he did
so much more for me.
HRA staff connected me with trainers and
a behaviorist and provided me with reading
materials and other tools to help Seri
and me get our relationship off to a good
start. One of the first things we tackled
was resource guarding. Any time food was
involved, Seri would get very protective,
which to me seemed a natural reaction for
a dog who had been practically starving
just a few months before. Fortunately, Seri

was eager to learn and we were able
to overcome this issue with time, patience,
and lots of treats.
When I adopted Seri, I didn't know a
lot about his breed (pit bull terrier mix)…
didn't know about the many negative
stereotypes that some people have
about these dogs. But as I learned,
I quickly grew very protective of his
breed and supportive of efforts to
abolish breed-specific legislation. I
mean, how could I not? Have you seen
his handsome face!?
Seri and I currently live in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan,
more than 6,000 miles from
where we met. I work closely with a
variety of people and Seri is right there
with me. He brings down barriers not
only as a dog, but also as a Staffordshire
terrier-pit bull mix. Kyrgyzstan is a
country where animals are not thought
of as pets so most people are frightened
when they meet Seri for the first
time. However, once they do, they fall
in love.
Seri is a sweet, good-natured dog who
has come so far—in so many ways—
since we met. I’m so glad to have him
in my life and look forward to making
many more memories with him!
