HOPPING INTO THE SPOTLIGHT Basil Adds Spice to Lives Everywhere By Amelia Perez HRA adopter 4 ALLIANCE
When I went to the Humane Rescue <strong>Alliance</strong> (HRA) to look for a bunny, I never expected to end up with a celebrity. I was just looking for a small furry friend to keep me company along with my two dogs. I remember walking into the Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center and seeing a big white rabbit with cool blue eyes. She looked uneasy and a little timid, which was understandable because the shelter can get hectic at times. I asked to pick her up or pet her but at the time Basil was too scared; I waited by the open den door for a while and was finally able to pet her once before she hopped away. Even though this interaction wasn’t exactly love at first sight, I felt a certain connection to Basil and decided to bring her home, where she quickly stole the hearts of my family members. Basil was very scared at first, refusing to eat out of my hand and hiding from me in her cage. I was a little discouraged but never gave up and, little by little, she began to trust me. I studied a lot about rabbit language so I could better understand Basil and her needs. One of my favorite moments was when she licked me for the first time, which means, “I love you and I trust you.” We’re now best buddies and spend most of our time together. Basil has become an active community member in my town. The family across the street adores her; when the mother sees Basil, she tells her kids so they can come out and say hello. People have stopped their cars to ask questions or roll down the windows for their kids to see, sometimes even parking their car to get out and say hi to Basil. One day, nearly 20 elementary school kids approached to meet Basil. I told them that as long as they were quiet they could say hi; all of them eagerly whispered while taking turns petting her. I’m pretty sure every one of them went home that day asking their parents for a bunny. People often share their sense of humor when seeing me walk Basil. One older man commented, “funny looking dog,” and another person told me that seeing a bunny on a leash had made their day. I love seeing all the smiles Basil brings to the community. Last summer I took Basil on my beach vacation. Since she loves going on walks and hopping through the grass, I wondered how she would like the beach.
