POSITIVE OUTCOMES
We were pleased to welcome Mr Kenny Duncan, Headteacher of Kingsbridge Community College, into our
school on Thursday of this week.
He saw some exceptional work during Periods 1 & 2 and was incredibly impressed by the both the energy of
staff and students and the standard of work being produced.
Clearly evident to him was the dedication that staff have displayed over the course of the year to ensure that
presentation and expectation is as high as it possibly can be.
Mr Duncan also took the opportunity to engage in many conversations with
students. They could articulate confidently, not only about the current work they
were doing, but also about their enjoyment of school and their lessons, in
addition to the numerous extra - curricular activities available outside of the
classroom.
Whilst I have the privilege of walking the corridors of Coombeshead Academy
every day, it fills me with enormous pride to be able to welcome guests in to the
school to see such drive and focus across the year groups.
As we build up to the main examination season this motivation and commitment
should end in the most positive of outcomes!
ENRICHMENT
CHRISTOW
On Monday 27 th February a group of aspiring lawyers in Year 11 visited Kitsons Solicitors in Torquay. The
students enjoyed a working lunch with a team of solicitors, legal executives, paralegals and licensed
conveyancers who explained the many different routes they had taken into a career in law.
Their team included Alice Darch, ex Coombeshead, who is starting her training contract with Kitsons after the
summer. Alice also featured in the last edition of Aspire magazine.
It was really interesting for the students to meet such a professional legal team with the afternoon session
helping them decide the route they might want to take into a career in law.
This could be through University or as part of a more vocational, work - based route by first becoming a legal
executive. Our thanks to Kitsons for hosting the group who had a fantastically interesting afternoon and came
away full of enthusiasm for the law.
COOMBESHEAD TAIKO AT MUSIC FOR YOUTH
FESTIVAL – 24/02/17
Coombeshead Taiko were honoured to be
asked to come and perform at Truro Methodist
Church as part of Music for Youth. Music for
Youth (MFY) works with thousands of young
people from all over the UK who are passionate
about music. We know how important it is to be
actively involved in the arts from a young age –
the benefits last a lifetime.
As part of the Regional Festival series in which
Coombeshead Taiko were involved, 40,000
young musicians took to the stage at 50
different festivals to perform to their peers and
supporters.
Taking part in a MFY regional event has given
our young musicians and teachers a chance to
feel part of something bigger, and to connect
to other young people across the country who,
like them, love making music.
EXPRESSIVE ARTS
CHRISTOW
FOCUS ON FISH
The Art Department were delighted to invite Louise Cole into school on
Monday to head up a Fish Art Workshop. The workshop was run in
collaboration with the Creativity on the Coast project run by Louise, Coco
Hodgkinson and Kat Hueston.
Louise has fed back her comments about the day, the students and the
work they created which we have reported here.
“I would like to thank staff for letting students out of their lessons to
participate. These extra experiences are truly invaluable to developing
our students. It was summed up by Alex Miles in Year 8 who said... 'If my
face was wider my smile would be even bigger!"
We talked about the workshop all the way home and were buzzing with
how much we had enjoyed it and all the really lovely things we noticed
that were highlights for each of us.
Please do pass our thanks to staff and students who were all so friendly
and interested and easy to talk to.
We really thought the group of students were amazing in their focus and ‘give it a go’ attitude. The
atmosphere was so calm and relaxed; fun but really charged with creativity. It was a great opportunity to
talk and share experiences and hear stories about the sea and fish. Great to see students filleting and
eating fresh local seasonal fish. Aren’t we lucky to live in Devon never far from the sea.
The work the students produced was such high quality and so expressive to each of them; lovely to see
people go in their own direction with their work.
My personal highlights were the focus Alex put in on his Herring tile with such attention to detail and the
diligence to complete it, and for Holly’s comment about her
mackerel ‘I think this is my best piece of art I’ve ever done. I’m
pleased with it.’
The warm culture and attitudes of all the students were a
complete credit to them and the school.
Thank you for opportunity to work together and yes we
definitely look forward to more collaborations.”
Kay Davies and Mary Bagwell, both from fishing families in
Sidmouth helped to run the cooking part of the workshop.
We are very grateful for the help and support the students
received for what proved to be a most enjoyable experience for
all involved.
LET’S MAKE SOME CRÊPES!
MFL
On Wednesday morning, some students from Year 8T1
were lucky enough to put their knowledge of French to
practical use by making some pancakes in a Food
Technology room.
CHRISTOW
Organised into small groups, the students had to follow a
recipe in French to prepare the batter before making the
crêpes themselves. They then happily ate them!
Lots of fun was had by all. The students were very grateful
for the experience and all credit to them for relishing this
opportunity to practise French in context; they are
currently working on the topic of food.
‘Merci beaucoup’ to Mr Thomas for letting us use his
room, to Mr Stevenson for his technical support during
the lesson and not forgetting the extra support from Year
11 students Emma and Megan.
