Both a scoring and rebounding threat, despite giving up a few inches down low, the fouryear starter shot 50 percent in terms of field goals, 67 percent at the charity stripe. Ryann Ogarek, sophomore, Providence 16.5 PPG, 9.5 RPG, 1.4 SPG, 1 BPG. The 5-foot-10 forward was the Celtics’ leading scorer and rebounder, playing more like a seasoned veteran than a sophomore, absolutely dominating on offense. She led her team in scoring average, led the team with 167 rebounds, and earned MVP of the Medieval tournament and All-Tournament honors at the DeKalb MLK tournament. The Lake Michigan College commit was a catalyst for the Warriors’ offense. Everything seemed to run through the fouryear starter, despite her battle with injuries. Claire Paciga, senior, Providence 10.5 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 3.5 APG, 2 SPG. An all-around captain who did just about everything for her team. While Ryann Ogarek put up the big scoring numbers, Paciga was the team’s driving force. opprairie.com sports The orland park prairie | March 9, 2017 | 45 Boys Water Polo Eagles poised for success with trio of senior leaders Steve Millar Freelance Reporter Sandburg boys water polo coach Jim Caliendo sees the pieces in place for a strong season. It all starts with a trio of senior leaders. “We bring back the core of our team from last year,” Caliendo said. “Down the middle, we have a threeyear starter in goal in Nick Jackson. Ben Mars, our hole defender and point man, has just gotten better and better and is looking really strong. Then we have Marty Blake, a returning All-State player, in the hole for us. Those three seniors are going to lead the way.” Joey Jenkot, Josh Grella and Kyle Fox are juniors who got a good deal of varsity experience this past season. “We still have to find one more starter,” Caliendo said. “There’s a lot of kids that are equal that we’re going to watch and see who emerges. We should have a very solid starting lineup, and a good number of kids that can come off the bench and contribute.” The Eagles open the season March 14 at home against Bremen co-op. They hope to end it at state, a destination they’ve fallen short of the last two years. This past season, Sandburg was the No. 1 seed in the Lincoln-Way North Sectional but had its season end with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to Lincoln-Way Central in the sectional semifinals. “That loss definitely motivated us to work harder for this year,” Jackson said. “We don’t want that to happen again. We really want to win sectional and get to state.” Blake is a big reason why the Eagles are optimistic they will meet that goal this year. He was a junior varsity player two years ago, but this past year moved right into the hole position, where most teams put their best scorer. Blake became one of the state’s top offensive players and was named All-State. “Going from JV to a varsity starter at the toughest position in the game was tough,” Blake said. “It taught me how to focus, and I learned the toughness that it takes to be successful. You’re getting beat up nonstop down there, and you have to have the right mindset. “Starting as a junior and getting that experience was a huge help. I’m very comfortable now. I know what I’m going to do this year.” Caliendo said he knows teams will shape their defense around Blake. So, the Eagles will have to find ways to work around that. “I think a lot of teams are going to key on Marty,” Caliendo said. “The key to our team is whether or not we’re able to execute an insideoutside game. If teams crash down on him, can we score from the outside? “I look where we are now, with the arms we have, and we’re way ahead of where we were this time last year. So, I’m excited about that.” Defensively, Sandburg figures to be strong, with the veteran presence of Jackson in the net. “Nick had a phenomenal swim season for us,” Caliendo said. “So, he’s coming in with more confidence than I’ve ever seen from him. He’s exuding confidence right now. When you have a goalie that’s as talented as him and excited about playing, that usually means good things are going to happen.” Jackson said he feels good about where he is at but is not resting on his laurels. “I know I have to work just as hard as previous years to produce good results,” he said. “I know I’m going to get a lot of help from my teammates. We have a lot of seniors and juniors, and we should be able to get far if we work together.” Caliendo said he expects Mars to make life easier for Jackson by providing strong defense on opponents’ top scorers. “Over the summer and offseason, I built a lot of endurance,” Mars said. “I learned a lot last year, and I’m looking forward to putting it all in action.” This will be the last season for Caliendo, who is retiring after 38 years of coaching, including the past 24 at Sandburg. Caliendo has led the Eagles to state five times and has won four state trophies. This group of players would like nothing more than to send him out with one more. “It definitely jacks up the enthusiasm knowing this is his last year,” Blake said. “We came up a little short two years ago. Last year was a heartbreaker. :Now, it’s coach Cal’s last season. And for us seniors, it’s our last season. We’re really determined to get to state and just win as much as we can for coach.” Hockey Providence recovers from slow start to best Brother Rice Brittany Kapa, Assistant Editor Providence entered the 2017 Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois Blackhawk Cup High School Varsity Red Division series seeded No. 2 but did not play like it. Providence suffered a post-Kennedy Cup daze during the first period of play against its 18-seed opponent, Brother Rice. The two teams battled March 1 at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville and Rice took full advantage of the team’s slow start. The Crusaders took an early 1-0 lead against the Celtics to end the first period. The Celtics eventually bounced back for a 6-2 win and advancement to the next round of the series. It was the Crusaders’ Matt Moro who took advantage of the lull and scored Brother Rice’s first goal just 2 minutes and 25 seconds into the game. Jake Rott, of Orland Park; Josh Mooncotch; and Jake Vennetti, of Orland Park; attempted to work together to get something going at the end of the first period, but their efforts did not come with a reward. The trio found good looks within the last 2 minutes of the first period but was unable to best Brother Rice’s goalie Josh Moro. Providence coach Nick Iaciancio pointed to sloppy passes, pinching in the offensive zone and not having a solid defense as contributing factors. He added the team needed to get “back down to fundamentals.” “I don’t lose it very often, and I kind of thought I needed to get their attention today,” Iaciancio said about his talk with the team during the first intermission. Forward Dylan Gorski said that Iaciancio’s words of wisdom were what the team needed to get refocused. “Coach came in after the first period,” Gorski said. “[Iaciancio] said, ‘We’re here for a reason; we’re 2 seed for a reason. We need to show who we are.’ That’s what we did. We came out and scored four goals in the second period.” Rott (2 goals, 1 assists) opened up the scoring onslaught during the second period. Rott was able to bury the puck 1:09 into the second period, with help from Vennetti (3 assists) and defensman Jake Lawler (1 assist). Two minutes later, Mooncotch (1 goal) was able to put the puck in the net while falling down, giving the team a one-goal advantage. The real momentum shift happened 6:12 into the second period. “Timmy Kirkwood had the puck there at the blue line, and I wanted to take the mid-ice pass,” said Gorski, a junior, of picking off a pass in the neutral zone from Kirkwood. “So, I just put my stick there. He shot the puck, and I just picked it up, started skating forward and ... saw the hole 6 inches off the ice and shot the puck and I scored.” Gorski was awarded the unassisted goal, giving Providence momentum the team desperately needed. “His play is underrated, because he’s not this huge goal scorer,” Iaciancio said in reference to Gorski’s goal. “He’s been so dependable for us, and that was a situation where we’re down a guy, and we needed a little bit of momentum and stability. Iaciancio referred to Cole Kaup, who is currently out because of illness. The Crusaders struck back a minute after Gorski scored. Nick Schwandt bested Celtics’ goalie Ryan Iaciancio with help from Ryan Hanacek and Brett Bagus, making the score 3-2. Cam Cutler, another player who does not often make the score sheet, netted the team’s fourth goal of the period, with help from Kevin Horan, of Orland Park. The third period only saw two goals. Mike Massaro deflected Ryan Kaup’s shot from the point for the team’s fifth goal, and Rott netted a power-play goal late in the third period. “We can’t take nights off,” Nick Iaciancio said when asked about what the team would learn from this experience. “I thought we worked really hard; we just didn’t work really smart.”
