Each year Cardinal Ritter Senior Services serves 30,000 senior adults in the Saint Louis community. In order to continue to meet the needs of those seniors depending on us for care, we depend on our friends and donors. Please consider making a tax deductible gift to CRSS. There are several ways to make your gift and you can designate your gift for a specific program, activity or facility. Ways to Give Financial Gift – Gifts of cash, check and credit card are treasured. You can mail your gift in the enclosed envelope, on-line via www.cardinalrittersenior services.org, or call the development office at 314-961-8000 ext. 323. Monthly pledge – You can designate on your envelope that you will be making a monthly gift and mail in your donation each month, a repeating gift can be set up on-line through our website or it can be charged to your credit card each month. Gifts of memory/honor – Your gift in honor or in memory of a loved one can be indicated on the enclosed envelope, you may purchase a Blessing Garden brick or bench or a specific item can be given in their name. Planned Gift – Please consider including Cardinal Ritter Senior Services in your will. In-Kind gifts – Items that can assist a senior adult in their home or assist with costs are always welcome. New games, puzzles, personal care items as well as gift cards are always needed and welcome! Support our fundraiser – Friday, November 4th is an Evening with Motown. Become a sponsor, buy a table or ticket, donate an auction item or support the Hawaiian raffle. Cardinal Ritter Senior Services is proud to be a member of United Way of Greater Saint Louis. 6 This Spring the residents of St. Agnes Apartments were awarded a grant for a Community Garden through Gateway Greening. The residents built, planted and maintain 4 raised vegetable gardens and have reaped a bountiful harvest thus far. Gateway Greening’s Community Garden program supports community gardens and urban greening projects that improve the appearance of neighborhoods, inspire, educate, and reflect the pride of the participants — often becoming community focal points and catalysts for neighborhood improvement. The purpose of the Community Garden program is to support neighborhood groups committed to creating successful food-producing gardens or urban greening projects over the long-term and provide the resources and knowledge that enable them to develop food producing gardens and landscaped areas. To qualify the residents of St. Agnes had to meet the following guidelines for a Gateway Greening grant: 1) The core community group should consist of at least 10 adults, depending on the size and scope of the project. Most of the members should be residents of the neighborhood. Having local individuals involved ensures there is an incentive for the success of the project. The group should consist of a diverse range of people. 2) The right site is important to the long term success of a project 3) When the group is committed and obtained a site for the project, begin a plan for the garden.
• The gift shop at Mary Queen and Mother Center is looking for volunteers to work a 4 hour shift on the first, second or fourth Saturday of the month, the first Sunday of the month, and every Monday. • Pastoral Care at Mary Queen and Mother Center needs volunteers to help transport residents to and from chapel for Rosary and Mass daily from 9:30 to 11 a.m. (except Wednesdays) and is also looking for a volunteer organist who could play during Mass on the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) • St. William Apartments in Dardenne Prairie would LOVE to have a small group of volunteers to help with some grounds cleanup and gardening this fall. • Mother of Perpetual Help and DuBourg House could both use volunteers to play card games (bridge, cribbage, poker, rummy, etc.) with residents, as well as volunteers that would like to Volunteers Help Wanted Special Thanks to the following groups who volunteered at various Cardinal Ritter Senior Services facilities during the first half of this year: Bishop DuBourg High School students Cor Jesu Academy students DeSmet Jesuit High School students Grimco, Inc. employees Helias Catholic High School students (Jefferson City, MO) John Burroughs High School students MICDS students Mehlville School District employees Patch.com employees Rosati Kain students St. John Vianney High School students St. Joseph Academy students St. Louis University students St. Louis University High School father/son club St. Mary of the Cenacle youth group (New Boston, TX) Savvis employees Visitation Academy students 7 socialize and do current event updates from the newspaper or internet. The ideal volunteer is someone who is familiar with the assisted living environment, is very reliable and feels comfortable working independently with the residents. • DuBourg House would also like to find a volunteer that would be interested in leading light exercise classes with the residents. • Our Independent Living Apartments are searching for an empathetic volunteer to lead a gentle therapeutic exercise and movement program that helps to increase flexibility, range of motion and balance. Great music, lots of fun working with senior adults. The right volunteer will be available for three-days training for certification in February. He/she will work with an experienced instructor to lead sessions for two groups of ten to twenty senior adults. Each group (one beginning in January 2012 the second group in March) meets twice weekly for 18 weeks (total 36 sessions). Medical background is advantageous, but not a requirement. A great time was had by all and the residents can’t wait for the group to come back! Our next Young Friends event will be a social networking happy hour this fall (date TBD).
