In The Beginning...
Kitty Hauer: “Farmer, we need a new school.”
Farmer Marschall: “What are you talking about?”
Kitty: “The temperature upstairs is 85°. There’s no circulation. It’s 65° on
the first floor. One room has to have an ice pack on the thermostat just to
keep the temperature above freezing. Some rooms have only one electrical
outlet. There’s no room for storage anywhere. We gotta do something
Farmer. We need a new school.”
Farmer: “Then let’s go build one.”
The thought. The idea for building a new school had to start some-
where. Two people saw the need and did something about it.
The existing school buildings were way past their prime and with the
population exploding in the Shakopee area, it became clear we were
going to run out of room. Something had to be done, and soon.
They started in August 1999, continuously knocking on door after
door trying to find land in Shakopee on which to build the new school on.
They found Bob Gillard, a 94-year old non-Catholic who owned 40
acres at the intersection of County Roads 83 and 16. Donations, pledges
and loans from parishioners funded the purchase price for the land.
Two years later, 30 acres of land east of Sun Path Elementary School
was acquired for the actual school site. The original 40 acres purchased
from Bob Gillard was sold to help fund the new school. The 30 acres was
comprised of 10 acres from
Billy and Bob Schmitz. 10
acres from Gene and Ginny
Hauer, with the Hauer’s
donating the other 10 acres.
Feasibility studies were
done. Postcards, letters and brochures were mailed to all parishioners
explaining the schools’ situation and the costs involved. Surveys were
taken. Town meetings were conducted.
Our community united. Hundreds of volunteers worked together,
donating thousands of hours in time, talent and treasure to truly justify
the theme throughout this campaign...
1928 — St. Mark’s School

Catholic Education
In The Shakopee Area.
Let’s go back in time to see how Catholic
Education came to be in the Shakopee
area. We’ll look at St. Mark’s and St. Mary’s of
Shakopee and St. Mary’s of Marystown. Each
one has their own unique story.
Do you know what the cost was to build a
four room school at St. Mary’s in Shakopee in
1935? Did you know that the first “teacher” at
St. Mary’s of Marystown actually operated a
saloon? Or that all of the classes at St. Mark’s
were taught in German until 1917?
These and other interesting facts will give
you an idea of the character and history of
Catholic Education in the Shakopee Area.
St. Mark’s
The Benedictine Fathers arrived at the parish
of St. Mark’s in Shakopee in 1857. The small
stone church was only a year old and they
immediately set out to construct two 23’ x 26’
framed buildings, one to be used as a rectory
and the other as a school. Since there were no
nuns in Shakopee before 1862, it is believed that
the priests themselves were the first teachers. It
is also believed that all of the students were boys.
Letters in the Archives of St. Benedict in St.
Joseph, MN are explicit that the date of the nun’s
arrival was Oct. 9, 1862. Three young Benedictine
sisters from St. Mary’s in Pennsylvania came to
Shakopee and moved into a converted cow barn.
By 1866 there were 6 nuns, so construction
began on a limestone convent and school that
was built just south of the church. Known as
St. Gertrude’s Convent and Academy, it was to
be a boarding school for young women. Not only
did they accept day students from the surrounding
area, but for a brief time they also taught at the
Public School as well. We can only conclude that
the curriculum was similar to that which was
offered to students at St. Gertrude’s Academy a
few years later:
• Religion or Christian Doctrine
• Arithmetic and Language
• History and Geography
• Spelling and Composition
• Sewing and Mending
There were 30
nuns at St. Mark’s
in 1878 but the
Pastor, feeing
they couldn’t
teach German
properly,
replaced them
with the School
Sisters of Notre
Dame from
Milwaukee, WI.
In January of 1922, a fire
broke out in the kitchen of
the sister’s residence. The sisters could not
reach the phone (which was located in the
burning room) so they rang the school bell,
arousing the neighbors who in turn, called the
fire department. Because the school rooms
adjoined the residence, many were damaged by
smoke and water, so classes were suspended
while repairs were made. A fire insurance policy
of $7,000 was carried on the building and that
1917 — St. Mark’s Graduates
was sufficient for the repairs needed. No sisters
were injured in the commotion, but the sudden
uproar must have been quite a shock to their
orderly life.
By 1940 it was very apparent that a new
school was needed to house the increasing
enrollment. It was built in conjunction with the
parish hall and consisted of 6 classrooms, a
library, washrooms, auditorium and 5 extra
rooms. Part of the old building (built in 1883)
was torn down and the remaining building was
remodeled into additional rooms and a
chapel for the sisters.
According to the
parish census of
1948, 256 children
were enrolled in
St. Mark’s
Parochial school
and were taught
by 7 School
Sisters of Notre
Dame. Construction
in 1954 added more
classrooms, a cafeteria
and kitchen, storage
space and washrooms. Further
construction in 1964 added 9
additional classrooms, office space, washrooms
and storage.
In 1970, St. Mark’s School merged with the
schools of St. Mary’s in Shakopee and St. Mary’s
of the Purification in Marystown to form SACS,
the Shakopee Area Catholic School.

1937 — St. Mary’s Graduates
St. Mary’s of Shakopee
In June, 1935 Archbishop Murray visited St.
Mary’s parish in Shakopee to encourage the
parishioners to start a parochial school. Up until
then, students attended either St. Mark’s School
or the public school.
The proposal brought forth much discussion
and some disagreement. Nevertheless, Archbishop
Murray encouraged the pastor to proceed with
the building and in July of 1935, the excavation
began for a school situated east of the church
and facing Fifth Avenue. Men and teams with
shovels and scrapers began the preliminary
groundwork for the basement. John Kratochvil of
New Prague was the general contractor.
The one story brick building consisted of a
vestibule entrance, school office and four classrooms.
The basement contained a social hall, kitchen,
boiler room and lavatories. The cost was $32,000.
Archbishop Murray recommended that the
School Sisters of Notre Dame take charge and
on August 27, 1935 two nuns arrived to begin
registration.
The school opened on September
14, 1935 with 98 pupils in grades
1 through 8. Because the school
was not quite finished, grades 3,4,7,
and 8 met in the morning and grades
1,2,5, and 6 met in the afternoon
utilizing the two completed classrooms.
In August 1935, the parish
purchased the Theodore Weiland
home on the corner of Fifth Avenue
and Lewis Street to house the sisters.
The purchase price was $5,000.
On Sunday, October 27, 1935,
the parish used their new facility
for their first dinner and bazaar.
On June 1, 1936 the first graduation ceremony
took place for four pupils; Margaret Gelhaye,
Lila Lee Dressen, Arthur Smith and James
Ludowese.
In 1947 the school space proved to be inadequate
so a school room was finished off in the
basement. In 1949 Father McRaith received
permission to build an addition on the south side
of the building. It consisted of four classrooms, a
library and lavatories on the ground floor and a
gymnasium/auditorium in the basement. The
cost was $113,000. Again, John Kratchovil of New
Prague was the general contractor; A.V. Williams
did the plumbing and heating, and Thomas
Adcox of Shakopee did the electrical work. The
auditorium was converted into needed classrooms
and a gymnasium was added to the east of the
school at a later date.
In 1970, the three area Catholic elementary
schools merged and became the Shakopee Area
Catholic School (SACS). Grades 6-8 attended
classes at St. Mary’s School, grades 1-5 at St.
Mark’s School and St. Mary’s at Marystown
closed.
St. Mary’s of the Purification
St. Mary’s of the Purification was located in
the small unincorporated village of Marystown,
four miles south of Shakopee in Louisville
Township. The surrounding area was primarily
agriculture. It is not on the record when the first
school opened. However, the first children, few
in number, went to Mr. John Theis (who operated
a saloon) and received a few hours of daily
instruction during a certain period of the year.
Later, the school was transferred to the parish
house which consisted of two rooms. At first one
room was used for the school while the pastor
reserved the other for himself. When the number
of children increased, the entire building was
used a school and the pastor rented a house in
the vicinity.
A frame building built in the 1860’s was used
as a school for grades 1 through 8. The Catholic
Sisters of Charity taught in this location for some
years. For the first five months of the school year
it was considered a public school and the other
five months, a parochial school.
A two-story red brick building was constructed
at a cost of $2,954.53 in 1892. The building
consisted of four rooms. In 1935 it was remodeled
to include a stairwell and a new entrance.
During the years this school operated, it
was taught by several religious orders, namely
the Catholic Sisters of Charity, the Sisters of
1919 — Marystown playground

St. Francis and the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
Lay teachers also taught when nuns weren’t
available from 1901-1921.
Beginning in 1921, as a three room school,
the two upper rooms were a parochial school
taught by a lay teacher under the supervision of
the county superintendent of schools. The parish
didn’t ask for rent for use of the building. The
district paid the lay teacher’s salary and allowed
a certain amount for maintenance of the building.
According to the archives at Mankato, high
school grades 9 and 10 were taught by the
School Sisters of Notre Dame from 1927-1937.
One teacher taught both grades. Five students
were enrolled in the high school in 1934-35; ten
students in 1936-37. Some of the subjects taught
were English, Algebra and History. A small
tuition fee was charged for the students attending
the high school. Since this was considered a
parochial high school, no state aid was received
for its operation.
The school closed in 1970 and joined with
St. Mark’s and St. Mary’s of Shakopee to form
the Shakopee Area Catholic School (SACS).
The 98 year
old school was
torn down to
make room for
a parish center
in 1990.
SACS
In early 1969, at the request of the archbishop,
the school boards from the three schools met to
consider consolidation. It was felt that by consolidating
a better educational program could be
offered, including special and enrichment programs.
Many meetings were held and on January 28,
1970, three plans were presented to parents and
parishioners to provide a cooperative system of
parochial education between the schools.
The plan adopted was for St. Mark’s to provide
20 classrooms for grades 1 though 5 and St. Mary’s
of Shakopee to provide 12 classrooms for grades
6 through 8. St. Mary’s of Marystown would
close completely.
The fall of 1970 saw the Shakopee Area
Catholic schools (SACS) begin their first school
year with an enrollment of 862 students, 574
in grades 1-5 and 288 in grades 6-8. 494 of the
students were from St. Mark’s, 288 from St. Mary’s
and 80 from St. Mary’s, Marystown.
1971 — First Graduating Class of the Consolidation
Morning and afternoon kindergarten classes
were added in 1976. Pre-kindergarten began as a
half-time program in 1989. SACS Kids Club, an
after-school latchkey program, started in 1991. In
1995, the SACS School Board discussed at length
the possibility and consequences of increasing
the school enrollment to three sections per grade
level. The decision was made to start with three
sections of Kindergarten in the fall of 1996.
And in 1999, SACS opened its first full day
kindergarten sessions.
The opening of the Blomington Ferry Bridge
in 1994 saw the beginning of tremendous population
growth in the Shakopee area. The SACS
buildings were beginning to burst at the seams
and were in dire need of repair, remodeling and
updating. Both buildings were also land-locked
which would limit the previously planned-for
expansion.
In 1999 the decision was made to begin
searching for land for construction of a new
free-standing school building.
And the rest is history.

Shakopee Area Religious Education
In the early history of the churches of St. Mark,
St. Mary and St. Mary of the Purification of
Marystown, each parish had a Religious Education
Program for their students not attending their
Catholic Schools.
With the consolidation of the three Catholic
schools came the consolidation of the Religious
Education Program in 1970.
The Religious Education Board of St. Mary &
St. Mark started in 1970. Robert Sweeney was
the first accountant for the SARE Board for
approximately 25 years. The board consists of two
members from each of the three parishes.
SARE History Banners
From 1970-1972 Franciscan Seminarians from
Assumption Seminary were invited into homes
to teach the High School students.
Elementary classes were held after school
hours in St. Mark’s building on Tuesday and
Wednesday afternoons. On Wednesdays, Junior
and Senior high classes were held in the evening.
These classes were conducted at St. Mary’s
school building. Over the years, days and times
of classes have been adjusted. Presently all grade
levels are held on Wednesday afternoons and
evenings.
Although the staff is salaried, the program
would not succeed without the numerous, dedicated
volunteers. For example, presently 65
catechists and another 60 support staff are needed
for the 3 sessions of grades 1-6, 1 session of
grades 7&8 and 1 session for grades 9-10. Grades
11 & 12 meet periodically.
The SARE Program is here to support the
parents in their role as primary educators in the
Confirmation Retreat
faith of their children. There are some families
in grades 1-8 who choose to teach Religious
Education as a family in their homes. This works
very well.
Sacramental Programs are a facet of the
SARE Program. For the Sacraments of First
Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation,
parent meetings and retreats are held. These
meetings and retreats are for SACS and SARE
students and parents.
Shakopee Catholic Youth Ministry
Shakopee Catholic Youth Ministry began
with a group of parents and adults
who wanted to keep junior high and senior high
aged teens involved in the life of the Church and
to help them continue to grow in their faith. They
also wanted to provide fun, safe, social events
for teens and realized it would be advantageous
if people from all three parishes worked together
to accomplish this. The Church of St. Mary, the
Church of St. Mark and
St. Mary’s of the
Purification Church in
Marystown were already
consolidated for a
Catholic school and for
their religious education
program, so it made sense
to cooperate together for
these efforts too. Parents
and adult volunteers
coordinated dances and
social gatherings for teens.
It was difficult for
volunteers to coordinate
these events and parents
and adults saw the great
need for a more consistent program to support
the spiritual formation of teens. A small task
force drew up a mission statement and goals for
the emerging program and started a dialog with
the Archdiocese about the possibility of hiring a
Director of Youth Ministry. Fr. McConville, who
was the pastor of St. Mary’s at the time, was
instrumental in hiring a Youth Minister. St. Mary’s
provided office space and equipment for the new
program. All three parishes agreed to pay subsidies
for each seventh through twelfth grade teen in
their parish which would contribute to the budget,
salary and benefits for a full time Director of
Youth Ministry.
In 1998, Heather Lage was hired as the first
Director of Shakopee Catholic Youth Ministry.
Heather did a great job getting the new program
off the ground. She offered weekly Youth Group
for junior high aged students and planned special
events for senior high students. Under her
leadership, teens attended Summer
Festival Camp, a non- denominational
Christian camp held at Mankato State
University for junior high teens and at
the University of Wisconsin Stout in
Menomonie, WI for senior high students.
A group of ten senior high students
even traveled to the National
Catholic Youth Conference in St. Louis
Missouri in November of 1999. A
group of parents and adults from the
community were part of a Youth
Ministry Council, which helped steer
the young program.
In August of 2000, Heather left
ministry work in Shakopee and
Lynnae Bosch was hired to replace
her. At this time, Fr. Joe Fink became pastor at
St. Mary’s and took over as lead pastor
for the Youth Ministry Program. Youth
Group and activities for junior high and
senior high students still continue,
along with weeks at camp and trips to
the National Catholic Youth Conference.
Families enjoy community building
events such as Bonfires, Mardi Gras
Parties, free Babysitting Events and
Pancake Breakfasts. Teens enjoy
everything from trips to Grand Slam,
Winter Blast, and ski trips, to service opportunities
during Summer Stretch and raising awareness
about homelessness through “A Night on the
Street”. Fr. Joe shares his gift of making homemade
caramels with hundreds of people every year,
which has been a favorite fundraiser for Youth
Ministry during Advent. The Youth Ministry
Council works closely with the SARE Council to
ensure that a comprehensive program for junior
high and senior high aged students is being offered.
Teen representatives have been added to the
Council so teens are involved in making decisions
about what service and activities Youth Ministry
offers, while being mentored into leadership roles.
Youth Ministry continues
to flesh out its purpose to
foster the personal and
spiritual growth of young
people, and to empower
teens to be disciples of Jesus
as they share their gifts by
participating in the life,
mission and work of our
faith community.

The Spirit Is Building
We have taken a long journey and to
fully appreciate and understand how
we got here, we need to take a look back at
where we came from.
It was mentioned earlier about purchase
of land from Mr. Bob Gillard. But that was
only the beginning. As you’ll see by the
timeline, many events went into effect to
make this beautiful center a reality. It would
not have happened without the hundreds of
volunteers who came forward dedicating their
time, talent and treasure to the project.
Archbishop Harry Flynn presided over
Mass during Dedication Day on October 26,
2003 and proclaimed, “You are an outstanding
witness of what a church should be. Your are
an outstanding witness of what can happen
in a church when people under Jesus Christ
come together and do something very beautiful
for God. And this building. This edifice.
Is something that is very very beautiful for God.
I congratulate you.”
Catholic Education Center
W
hat a wonderful opportunity we
have been given in the Shakopee
area. We were given the greatest of tasks.
We were instilled with the honor of ensuring
that generations to come will have access to
learning about their Catholic faith.
The Catholic Education Center (CEC) in
Shakopee has become a testament to the
importance of Catholic faith formation in our
youth. The Education Center is a place where
children come together in the rich traditions
of our Church.
Making new friends.
Whether it’s for the Shakopee Area
Catholic School (SACS), Shakopee Area
Religious Education (SARE) or Youth
Ministry, the CEC is a place were
they can stand together and pray
for their own needs as well as
the needs of others, where they
can learn about their faith, and
see that faith is something to
celebrate and embrace.
God’s name is easily spoken here!
The CEC itself continues to impress visitors,
staff and students. Whether attending day
or evening classes, visiting for a sporting
event or attending weekly Mass, visitors to
the Center continue to applaud
the facility for its beauty and functionality.
SACS, SARE & Youth Ministry
staffs spent the first year personalizing
their areas within the CEC.
The result is a feeling of warmth
and welcoming.
This CEC is the largest in the
archdiocese. When completely full,
it has the capacity to educate 900 children.
There are 36 classrooms to accommodate
Pre-K through eighth grade, before and after
school Kids Club Program
and Religious Education
students. There are two
computer labs along
with special equipped
rooms for music, art,
spanish and science.
The cafeteria with its full-service kitchen, is
designed to serve 240 students at a time.
Youth Ministry’s space allows students to
stop in and relax or shoot a game of pool
after school or before their SARE classes.
Youth Ministry discussion.
The gym and lunchroom are used by
SACS, SARE and Youth Ministry leaders to
host larger group meetings and student
assemblies.
Preparing for first Communion.

Luau Night with Youth Ministry.
The newest addition to the building is a
set of stained glass windows in the Chapel.
Designed by Fr. Jim Schoenberger and made by
Larry Link, these glass panels are a beautiful
reminder of faith in action.
Action is also happening outside, where
classes are able to take full advantage of
basketball courts, two playgrounds and
several ball fields. There is a large grass play
area and a park right across the street.
New uses and benefits of the Catholic
Education Center continue to surface daily.
The CEC is a dream come true for Shakopee
and as one teacher recently said, “We’re still
waiting to wake up!”
The colors in the middle panel are brighter to emphasize centrality of death and Resurrection of Christ.
There is a continuation of the lines and colors into the other panels on each side emphasizing their connection to
Good Friday and Easter; That the Sacraments flow from the Paschal Mystery.
