Dear Sir/Madam,
This new edition of the ROWAnews is a
good opportunity to introduce myself to
you as the Managing Director of the
ROWA GROUP. On May 1st, I took over the
reins from Arne Höck, who has left the
company after three years of commendable
service. I am very much looking forward
to the exciting tasks that await me
in this position and to doing my part in shaping the future of the
ROWA GROUP. Our main focus in this respect is always on providing
technical solutions that enable you, as our customers, to further
increase your efficiency and competitiveness.
It is not easy to predict how our industry will develop. After all
generally good levels of demand combined with the recent declines
in the ifo Business Climate Index are difficult to interpret. The DIW
Economic Barometer also indicates dampened prospects for the
coming months. Moreover, the high prices of raw materials and a
shaky banking sector are making our industry ever more volatile.
We therefore expect a slight weakening of the economy in the next
quarter.
And while we, the ROWA team members, are unable to influence
the overall economic trends, we will nevertheless always do our
utmost to fulfil your requirements as best as we can. Reliable delivery,
speed and innovative zeal are what we stand for. And with
that, we offer security and reliability in these tumultuous times.
During my time on the Board so far, I have experienced first-hand
how highly motivated the team here is and I can clearly see the
proximity we have to you, our customers.
In order to keep our promises, we need well-trained specialists.
We are therefore very proud of our top-skilled employees. And to
assure that we are able to provide you with the best services also
in the future, we qualify our young talents – with impressive results.

edition of the ROWAnews also contains interesting information on

eMobility: Recharging with ROMIRA
The German Federal Government has set itself an
ambitious goal in relation to eMobility: by 2020, it aims
to have one million electric vehicles in the streets of
Germany. Working towards this goal, it intends to bring
about more efficient energy consumption, lower CO 2
emissions and the increased use of renewable
energy sources for on-road transport. Implementing
this challenging plan will first require the establishment
of an infrastructural basis. This, in turn, will involve such
measures as ensuring the availability of a broad range
of attractive electric vehicles.
Ensuring the safe and easy charging of electric cars,
scooters, etc. is also of primary importance. To
this end, user-friendly, sturdy and completely safe
charging devices must be installed. The Percedos ®
system (see fig.) by Heinrich Kopp GmbH fulfils all of
the above mentioned requirements. Percedos ® is an
In-Cable-Control-Box (ICCB) integrated into the charger
cable, which controls the entire charging process
between the connector and the vehicle. It thus allows
electric vehicles to be "filled-up" unattended. The
Percedos ® Mk5 version features a display upon which
important data such as the actual charge current are

Management
at ROMIRA
ROMIRA’s organisational concept is based on
providing the best possible customer service.
Special attention is therefore paid to constantly
optimising production and logistics processes
and, in particular, to reducing delivery times for all
types of orders, whether commodities or special
formulations. This, in turn, requires the fast flow
of materials, the quick supply of raw materials in
production, and efficient space management. To
create these conditions, ROMIRA cooperated
closely with A.B.S. Silo- und Förderanlagen GmbH
when installing their new production facilities.
Together with these renowned specialists for
flexible silo systems, ROMIRA was able to devel -
op and transfer to a silo concept perfectly suited
to their production processes. With the new
mobile day and intermediate silos, raw materials
can be stored in-house and it is made optimal use
of the available space. They can then be quickly
fed into the production processes as required.
This reduces production times and enables
ROMIRA to handle customer orders more safely
and efficiently than ever.
Economical and environmentally friendly:
halogen-free flame retardant from ROMIRA
Plastic is the ideal material for housings
and covers for electronic devices of all
kinds, whether for mobile telephones,
game consoles or computers. Indeed,
due to the flexibility of polymer materials,
industrial designers have almost unlimited
creative scope in this respect. Moreover,
through the inclusion of flame
retardant additives, the relatively high
flammability of polymers can be significantly
reduced. Until now, however,
halogenated flame retardants were required for this
process.
The new generation of the 9130 series of Romiloy ®
ABS/PC compounds only contains halogen-free flame
retardants. Moreover, as it is shown by thermogravimetric
analyses, these new compounds also offer
greater thermal stability compared to PC/ABS Blends
using bromine flame retardants. Through the inclusion
of glass fibres or glass microspheres, the new
compounds can also be given added rigidity and
dimensional stability without losing any of their flameretardant
properties. In addition to being halogen-free,
the 9130 series boasts lower weight thanks to reduced
density, as well as a considerably higher Vicat softening
temperature (VST/B 50) than matchable halogenated
PC/ABS Blends. And, last but not least,
they also offer greatly improved UV
resistance (Fig. 1).
Halogen-free compounds also do away
with the cost-intensive disposal process
stipulated for halogenated plastic hous -
ings whose product lifecycle has ended.
This, in turn, results in increased overall
cost-effectiveness for the users. Thus,
the use of the new 9130 Romiloy ®
compounds in the construction of electronic or medical
devices has considerable ecological and economical
advantages.

ROMIRA attaches great importance to customer service
quality, and this also goes for the Romiloy ® 9130
products. The new halogen-free compounds are
therefore also available in small quantities and in
special colours.

Product innovation: ROMIRA closes a market niche with streak-free ASA
Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate – or ASA for short – is an
extremely interesting material. The impact-resistant
terpolymer possesses positive characteristics similar
to those of ABS, but it is much more weather- and
chemical-resistant. The
break and scratchresistant
ASA is suitable
for numerous outdoor
areas of application, for
instance as a covering for
lawnmowers. However, in sheet
extrusion, a frequent problem
with ASA sheets is that they are
not streak-free.
ROMIRA GmbH, the ROWA
GROUP’s specialist for technical
polymers and blends, has now
succeeded in remedying this
defect by developing a formulation
for streak-free ASAs. This innovation
therefore closes a large market
niche, fulfilling the requirements of numer -
ous users. Previously, many potential users
considered ASA – used in sheet extrusion or in

working conditions ROMIRA has created in
Pinneberg. "We want our team to come closer together

and administration to the building which lies directly
between production and the laboratory. Through this
proximity, we prevent long communication channels.
At the same time, the ability to coordinate more
quickly and efficiently promotes cooperation".
ROMIRA , s new office space in Pinneberg/Germany
injection moulding – to be an ideal material for their purposes,
but due to its visual shortcomings, could not use
it. Now, after completing all of the necessary tests,
ROMIRA can offer these users ASA which is ideal in all
respects.
This now visually flawless ASA was developed by
experts at ROMIRA in collaboration with KVS GmbH
from Schüttorf. KVS GmbH, a supplier of plastic
panels and films, allowed its facilities to be used
to perform a series of comprehensive tests.
This allowed the development results from
the ROMIRA lab to be compared with
actual practice and thus facilitated
quick and systematic product
development.
This supplement to

available in two
versions and
with immediate
effect.
Application area for Rotec ® ASA EXP:
covering for lawnmowers
In order to build facilities with sufficient work stations
and meeting rooms, it was necessary to expand and
renovate a whole floor. One of the main focal areas of
this refurbishment was on improving communicative
aspects. Therefore the ROMIRA sales team no longer
conducts its work in individual offices, but rather sideby-side
in a well-lit, open-plan office space. The conference
room and the kitchen feature large interior
windows, which enhance the impression of open
space and width conveyed by the building’s architecture.
They also give a loft-like quality to the space
more often associated with the publishing and advertising
industries. This creative atmosphere promotes
social interaction and, most of all, facilitates more organised
work processes.
ROTEC ® ASA EXP 2158, suitable for application in
injection moulding and extrusion, achieves a high
surface gloss in the final product. Indeed, at an observation
angle of 60 °, the high gloss degree on flat
surfaces is 93 %. ROTEC ® ASA EXP 2191, created for
use in injection moulding, is utilized for products with a
matt effect and achieves 30 % gloss. If ROTEC ® ASA
EXP 2191 is used for grained surfaces, the gloss
level is 4 %.
With these products, ROMIRA can provide solutions for
approximately 80 % of the products in demand on the
ASA market now. To complete this product range, a
super-matt ASA is currently in development.

New Office: The ROMIRA team is moving closer together
At the request of ROMIRA’s management, all further
fittings and furnishings have been designed in such a
way as to contribute to a more positive work environment.
During the furniture selection process, for
instance, the focus was on warm colours and an
appealing, individual design. Thanks to the large
conference area in the management office and the
smaller lounge-like seating niches, it is always possible
to hold meetings at short notice and in a relaxed
informal atmosphere. This, in turn, also strengthens
communication within the team. Kai Müller: "We are
extremely pleased with the results of the renovation
and the new working conditions. These measures had
precisely the effect we had hoped for – particularly in
terms of the working atmosphere".

ROWA PROTECT –
Bacteria that can develop
antibiotics
Their discovery caused a stir in scientific research, but
this was by no means positive. An international group
of scientists recently published an article in which
they describe a special bacteria: the Klebsiella pneumonia.
This bacteria, they have observed, contains a
gene package named NDM-1. Alarmingly, the bacteria
can use this gene package to form an enzyme
blocking most of the antibiotics available today.
Klebsiella has developed, so to speak, an antibiotic
against antibiotics.
The formation of multi-resistant capacities as described
in the article presents a huge medical challenge.
After all, enterococci, salmonella and such are often
the cause of deadly infections. The challenge is
particularly great in hospitals, where so-called nosocomial
infections, i.e. illnesses caused by bacteria
often acquired by patients during their stay in hospital,
are a serious problem. In light of this, measures to
supplement the use of antibiotics are becoming all the
more important. Such measures include the creation
of polymer materials with antibacterial agents.
Whether doorknobs, toilet seats or drinking cups,
there are many thermoplastic objects in clinics with
which patients, visitors, doctors and medical staff are
in contact with every day. Due to constant contact
with many hands, these items are often the carrier
medium for disease-causing bacteria. By incorporating
disinfecting agents into the manufacturing process,
such objects can be coated with durable,
non-leaching antibacterial materials. Tests prove that
this can substantially reduce the spread of bacteria.
With ROWA PROTECT, ROWA Masterbatch now offers
a highly effective antimicrobial compound, based
on zinc oxide, which is suitable for use in injection
moulding as well as extrusion. The incorporation of
ROWA PROTECT has no negative effects on the
mechanical properties of the plastics used.

A successful integration –
one year of LIMS at the ROWA GROUP
The roll-out of the
"Infor ERP Blending"
software in the last
year marked the
completion of the
ROWA GROUP’s
conversion to a uniform
Enterprise Resource
Planning
System (ERP). And in
September 2011, the
"Infor Blending Lab
Information and Management
System" (LIMS) was introduced and is in
use since. Now, after twelve months, we can confidently
state that the integration of LIMS has been a
complete success.
Completely integrated into the ERP system, LIMS
has played a major role in further improving quality
management at the ROWA GROUP. "The LIMS
records all control
results on a product,
customer and batch
basis, and manages
them in a central database,
which the ERP
accesses. This means,
among other things, that
"blending" only releases
a batch for delivery when
all tests have been
completed and fully docu -
mented", Wulf Hagemeister,
Technical Manager of
Rowa Masterbatch, reports.
The LIMS has also proven
to be very beneficial in the
management of test jobs. It
means that customer-specific
test profiles, which
deviate in terms of test criteria
or in terms of standard
threshold values, can be
flexibly recorded, created,
and then re-accessed again
for subsequent test jobs. This
considerably accelerates the
administration and implementation
of test methods. The
LIMS system also offers valuable
customer service features.
For instance, upon request, the
software can generate a test
compliance certificate (TCC) for
every product delivery, indicating
that all tests and quality
checks performed have been documented in an
easy-to-follow manner. The TCC can then be incorporated
into the series of documents for the customer,
which comprises the order confirmation, pick
list, delivery note and invoice.
In terms of quality optimisation,
LIMS also has
a lot to offer, as Wulf Hagemeister
explains: "Because
the system makes
all data for a product
centrally accessible and
interlinked, we can conduct
statistical comparisons
of the performance
of different product batches
quickly and comprehensively.
We can
thus gain important data relating to the entire product
history, data such as the quality of the raw
material deliveries. We can then assess this data
and integrate our findings into production planning
and control".

ROWA Lack: Development of cooperation with Novotex in Brazil
Endless sandy beaches, prospering metropolises,
colourful carnivals – Brazil has always been known for
its abundance of tourist highlights. However, over the
past few years, the country with a population of 195
million has also become increasingly known as an
attractive economic region. The successful reforms and
political stabilisation of recent years have brought great
economic growth to this South American nation, which
has risen to become the eighth largest economy of the
world. And according to many analysts, this positive
development is set to continue.
In line with this general economic growth, Brazil’s
demand for products for the plastic processing industry,
such as solvents and special lacquers, has greatly
increased. In view of this grown demand, the
management of ROWA Lack GmbH recently decided

While thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), thermoplastic
polyurethanes (TPU) and encapsulated physical
foaming agents, so-called microspheres, have existed
for some time now, they are nevertheless still considered
relatively new in the plastics industry. The combination
of these products does result in polymeric foams with
outstanding properties.
Surfboard made of TPU-foam
Whether in extrusion (e.g. in the manufacture of gasket
profiles) or in injection moulding processes, (e.g. in the
production of shoe soles), TRACEL foaming agent
pellets based on microspheres can create TPE and TPU
foams with a low density and a highly consistent cell
structure. The beneficial properties of the microspheres
are hereby most apparent in products of lower hardness.
TRAMACO’s TRACEL product portfolio has expanded
considerably, now also encompassing pellets with
various polymer carriers, different types of microspheres
to take advantage of this favourable trend and to develop
their activities in South America. As part of this
development, ROWA Lack is cooperating with the Italian
company Novotex S.p.A. Headquartered in Milan,
Novotex S.p.A. specialises in the production of imitation
leather lacquers and, in its capacity as distributor for
Eastern Europe and Russia, has been a ROWA Lack
partner for many years.
In Brazil, ROWA Lack benefits not only from Novotex
S.p.A.´s excellent distribution network, but also from the
new manufacturing plant of "Novotex Sul Americana",
currently under construction in Araras, 200 km south of
São Paulo. The export process will involve shipping the
systems which have been pre-manufactured at the
ROWA Lack facility in Seevetal/Germany to Brazil, where
they will then be dissolved into lacquer on-site and

and different active contents. The range also includes
special pellets types suitable for contact with
food and resistant to high temperature
applications. Indeed, TRAMACO can
now offer the right foaming agent
pellets for virtually every TPE or TPU
foam application.

specialists will provide the Brazilian personnel at
Novotex in Araras with on-site training in this respect.
The production unit will begin to operate by the end of
the year. All production processes and all technical
equipment, the selection and installation of which is
carried out in close collaboration with ROWA Lack, fulfil
the most recent industry and European environmental
standards.
"In Novotex, we found the best possible partner for
Brazil. We see huge mid-term market potential for our
high quality solvents and special lacquers, in particular
with regard to the areas of motor vehicle tarpaulin
fabrics, textile construction and digital printing. The
regional automotive industry also offers promising sales
potential. And with the Novotex’s close-knit distribution
network, we are ideally positioned to service this
demand. Indeed with this new basis, we are also wellpositioned
to quickly and flexibly establish a presence
in other growing markets in South and Central America,

as exhibitor at NPE
Orlando/USA
ROWA Inc., ROMIRA, ROWA Masterbatch and
TRAMACO joined forces with Polyvel Inc. to exhibit
at the National Plastic Exhibition (NPE), held from
1st to 5th April. This was the first time the event was
held in Orlando, Florida. The fair, which has its origin
in the early 1970´s in Chicago, Illinois, is the largest
plastics exhibition in North America. In 2012, the
number of visitors to the triennial NPE increased by
30 % compared to 2009 to a total of 60,000. In
particular the number of South American participants
increased significantly.
ROWA GROUP , s booth at NPE in Orlando, Florida
Staff from ROWA Inc., the American sister company
of ROWA GROUP, ROMIRA, ROWA Masterbatch and
TRAMACO, used the industry event to strengthen
existing customer relationships in the US market by
means of expert discussions and meetings. The event
also introduced new customers to the ROWA
GROUP’s quality products. Visitors were particularly
interested in the new additive Cycle Plus, which can
be used to significantly reduce production cycle time
for semi-crystalline materials.
“This was the first time we attended the NPE as
exhibitors. It was a great opportunity to present
ROWA GROUP in America, as a globally active group
of synergetic specialist companies. We can already
say that the exhibition has provided great results.
For this reason we will definitely be participating again

Recently, ROWASOL and ROMIRA
RAINBOW
jointly completed an informative
advanced training programme. The focus was on
providing field sales staff with technical training on
the RAINBOW system. Using sample applications,
the employees were able to familiarise themselves
with all the features of the liquid colour system
under real production conditions and to have their
questions answered.
For purposes of this training session, a state-of-theart
extruder and a RAINBOW docking station with
six Viscotainers (RAINBOW modules), filled with
basic colours, was set up in the new ROMIRA
production hall. During the practical demonstration,
the training managers, Robert Kitzmann and Holm
Schulz, together with the ROMIRA and ROWASOL
application engineers, were able to clearly illustrate
RAINBOW’s numerous advantages with regard to
colouring technical polymers. These advantages
include a short set-up time thanks to the system’s
ability to quickly add new colours when starting
production, quick colour changes during production,
no unintentional contact with colour
concentrates, and, last but not least, consistently
high colour quality.
This presentation also emphasised the benefits of
RAINBOW in terms of environmental awareness
and savings potential. Because the RAINBOW
modules can always be refilled with colour, residual
contents do not need removing and waste packaging
does not result. This, in turn, means huge cost
savings and reduced storage costs.
The ROWASOL field sales team, Frank Unger,
Christian Schwarz, Gerhard Sturm, Guido Böckers
and Robert Puta, were very impressed by the
presentation. Upon completing the training session,
Christian Schwarz reported: “The numerous

Upon recently completing her vocational training
programme to qualify as an industrial sales clerk,
begun in 2009 at TRAMACO, Melanie Kupilas (22)

from the districts Pinneberg and Steinburg passed
their exams to qualify for commercial and technical
vocations. The ROWA GROUP’s Melanie Kupilas
achieved the top mark among trainees on commercial
vocational training courses with an overall score of 1.4.
Since her successful graduation, this up-and-coming
young talent has taken up a position in dispatch and
order processing at TRAMACO. "This is just the field
I wanted to work in. I really enjoy the direct contact
with customers", explained the native of Pinneberg
talking about her new job. The newly qualified sales
clerk was able to celebrate together with her colleagues
from TRAMACO Vitaliy Konradi (20) and Nikolai
Sell (26) from ROWA Masterbatch, who successfully
completed their vocational training programmes to
qualify as chemical production specialists. They were
hired directly after their qualification, too.
The excellent performance of these trainees reaffirms
the reputation of ROWA GROUP as a company
offering outstanding training programmes. "We would
like to extend our congratulations to Melanie, Vitaliy
and Nikolai, and see these excellent results as confirmation
of the effectiveness of our training programmes,"
said Oliver Stahl, Managing Director of the
ROWA GROUP.

opens a new
logistics centre
With the goal of further optimising logistics
processes, ROWA GROUP put a modern high
bay shelve warehouse (HBW) into operation in
late 2011. Now, with the opening of the new
logistics centre on August 30th 2012, the
company’s efficiency has been further increased
again.
Located in the direct vicinity of the HBW, the
logistics centre now serves as the contact point
for all external deliveries and dispatches. This
proximity has greatly optimised traffic flow on
the plant site and considerably reduced idle
time for lorry drivers. Moreover, their stays have
been made more pleasant through the installation
of coffee and snack vending machines. The
logistics centre in Ziegeleiweg in Pinneberg also
handles post and parcel shipping.
From his glass office, Logistics Manager
Thomas Krosta can look out over all of the
facilities on site now, including the entry area
and access lane. "It doesn't get better than that!
Now I can keep an eye not only on the
employees but also on people from outside the
company. I can therefore intervene at short
notice and I am always well informed".

FAKUMA 2012: ROWA GROUP presents

From the 16 - 20 October 2012, the FAKUMA, one of
the most important trade fairs for the plastics processing
industry will be held in Friedrichshafen. In 2011,
the organisers celebrated the 30th year of this international
industry event with a record result of over
1,670 exhibitors and almost 50,000 visitors from
around the world. This year, the event promises to
achieve similar figures.
