funded, money is raised
by events and donations from
The Board consists of dedicated
volunteers and is always
A part-time caseworker is
The Big Brothers/Big
Willis Harper on Reid Street
A potential Big Brother or
Big Sister has to be a mature dependable
adult over the age of
nineteen who is able to relate
to children in a positive manner
for at least three to five
hours per week for a minimum
one year period.
The volunteer is carefully
screened by the caseworker by
means of an orientation, training,
references, police checks,
and interviews-.
The children are formally
referred to the agency. This is
usually done by a parent. The
children are accepted between "^
ages of six and fourteen. They
are children who could benefit
from the guidance and friendship
of another adult.
The type of service pro^
vided is on a companionship
and "fun" basis not geared to
crisis-oriented situations.
The reason for this is that
the volunteer has qot been
trained to be a counselor. He
or she is a community mcmbec
who feels she/he has a bit of
Harpist Wallace
coming soon to a
Mountain near you
• The popular Island
Mountain Arts folk
harp school will be
expanding this summer
in Wells.
DOROTHEA FUNK
Observer Contributor
Sharlene Wallace of
Toronto will be teaching a
novice folk harp class. She is
joining well-known folk harpist
Kim Robertson who is returning
to teach an advanced and
professional class.
The appeal of past folk
harp schools, which draw students
from all over North
America, led IMA lo expand
its program this year with the
addition of Wallace.
Ironically, she is coming
full circle. Wallace's passion
for the folk harp developed
five years ago when she was a
student of Kim Robertson's in
Wells. Until then, Wallace had
been playing concert harp and
"looking for inspiration."
She says she found that in
spiration when Robei^ on
showed her the world of improvisation
which is possible
on the Celtic harp. "It was
freeing and exciting," .said
Wallace. "The folk harp gave
me a musical voice so now I'm
playing my own music."
The folk harp is often
called a lever harp because it
has levers on top to change the
keys of the songs. It has between
19 and 36 strings, compared
to the concert or pedal
harp which has about 46
strings. Sizes range from lap
harps to large ones which
stand on the floor.
Wallace has a degree in
music from the University of
Toronto and spent 10 years as
a concert harpist before embracing
the folk harp. She still
plays the concert harp to make
a living but has become totally
converted to the folk harp.
"It's where my 'harp' lies," she
joked.
on the folk harp when-
Ya gotta have 'harp': Shariene Wallace will be teaching a harp
class as part of the Island Mountain Arts school this summer.
ver she can. A couple of
months ago she took first prize
at an international pop and
jazz harp competition in Tucson,
Arizona.
Wallace says her course
will be strong on technique, on
having fun, on teaching improvisation
and problem solving,
and in helping students to
nurture themselves. She says
she understands what it's like
to combine music with a busy
lifestyle and her teaching is
geared to that.
The novice folk harp class
will run for four days, from
July 29 until August 1. The fee
is $180. These students may
audit Kim Robertson's advanced
and professional
course (August 3 - 7) for an
additional $75. And students in
the advanced course may audit
the novice class for $60.
Mortgage rates down to 8.6%!
ASK rOUR REALTOR
Ginnie
Dunn
It's a great time to buy a
house!
Mortgage rates could hardly
be lower...right now you can
get a five year term for
8.625%, or you can enjoy an
even lower rate...8% with a
shorter term.
In some zu-eas of Quesnel,
prices are lower this year than
last year. The exception is
acreage type properties.
There's a good choice of
homes on the market for sale.
This all adds up to a buyer's
market!
I believe that as soon as the
Lower Mainland and
Okanagan markets improve
(they have been extremely
poor this year), then we will
have the very large numbers of
buyers back which we had last
year and therefore, the price
of homes in Quesnel will be
back on an upward trend.
There are still out of town
buyers around this year, just
not as many as last year.
So...what are you waiting
for...the return of a larger
number of buyers, higher
prices, and more competition?!
B.C. continues to be the
most popular place in Canada
for interprovincial and international
immigration. Last year
B.C. showed a jump of 10%
over 1993. There were 80,000
new people entering the province
in 1994 and similar
trends are expected to continue.
There also seems to be a
tendency for people to move
away from larger cities. Quesnel
still offers pretty well the
lowest prices in B.C. And
people find that we have a
beautiful dty with much to offer.
PEOPLE
More patience requires experience & faith
I have a friend in Kamloops
who said he could never
be a doctor because he doesn't
have enough patience. The
pun is intentional.
He says I have more
patience than he does. That's
funny, because I think he has
more patience than 1 do. Perhaps
we'll find out in heaven,
but by then it probably won't
matter.
Do you ever wonder why
some people seem to be far
more patient than others? Perhaps
you've also noticed that
older people seem to be more
patient than younger people.
I can think of two causes
for that phenomenon. First,
the older we get, the more we
see of life, and rhe more we
understand about cause and
effect in life's experiences.
That is, we see some acting
patiently, others acting impatiently,
and we eventually
realize (if we're wise) that
patient individuals bring far
less trouble on themselves
Marsh wins regional scholarsiiip
Krista Marsh found out
last week just how good of an
athlete she is.
The Correlieu graduate
won the Ron Pcttigrcw
Memorial Scholarship for
being one of the best athletes
in the North-Central Zone.
"1 was surprised," said
Marsh Wednesday. "I never
expected I'd win it. I never
thought 1 was one of the best
basketball players in the
zone."
Besides her skills in ba.skclball,
volleyball and track and
field, she also won the award
based on her leadership,
sportsmanship and other
qualities that the selection
committee required.
The scholarship is worth
$500 which will help Marsh
with her post-secondary education,
when she attends UBC
next fall.
Each schoc^l is only allowed
one applicant and there were
only two other athletes in the
North-Central district who
earned the scholarship.
The Ron Pcttigrcw
Memorial Scholarship is dedicated
to the laic Ron Pcttigrcw,
who was an educator in
the north. He was killed in a
car accident while on a team
trip.
Seniors gear for Games
Seniors in Quesnel arc getting
active according to BC
Senior Games director Bonnie
Stowards.
So far ihere are roughly \5
seniors from Quesnel who
have qualified for the
Oliver/Osoyoos Camcs held
September 6-'^.
"We have more going this
year than we've ever had," said
Stowards who is also the cocoordinator
of the local Senior
Ciames branch. "Finally we're
getting through. We have
people going in carpet bowling,
dart.s, golf, horseshoes and
track and field."
Last year Quesnel had 10
athletes attend the Ciames and
although she .says that local interest
is increasing, they still
have a long way to go.
The hardest part is getting
seniors to come and try out for
the (james.
"1 know we have people
who play badminton and
tennis, but ihey haven't come
out yet."
Last weekend (J u c s n c I
hosted the goll tjualilicrs tor
Bonnie Stowards: Seniors
Local golfers who qualified
for the (james include Eleanor
Christensen in the women's
60-64 age class and Rosa
Gamache in the 70-74 class.
Local men who qualified
include Allen Kohlen in the
5.'^-.59 class, Howard Trask in
the 60-(>4 class and Nick Spicer
and Phil Ciamache who will
compete in the 70-74 class.
