Master Control
Grass Valley products offer the most
comprehensive, multiformat solutions
for acquisition, production, storage, and
playback—and a strong foundation for
centralized, proactive status and activity
monitoring.
In today’s fast paced on-air environment,
master control operations must be
performed accurately, correctly, and on time. Thus the design of a
master control system is a very important factor in ensuring troublefree
presentation, day after day—year after year.
The Grass Valley Saturn system is a powerful approach to master
control switching. Its revolutionary modular architecture lets you build a
system tailored to your operation—and easily upgrade it as your needs
change.
The multiformat Saturn system supports standalone or networked
configurations. It lets you switch among multiple channels with a
single keystroke. And it features support for all automation systems,
an intuitive console, powerful mixing, a rack-mountable digital effects
option, and bypass and backup switching capabilities.
You can also integrate the Saturn system with any Grass Valley router
and several third-party routers—due to its tight integration with the
Grass Valley Jupiter control system—to make the master control
system the centerpiece of an incredibly powerful and integrated
broadcast control network.
Multiformat Support
Today’s broadcast facilities typically support a combination of analog
and digital video, including high-definition (HD) signals. To that end, the
Saturn switcher provides a straightforward upgrade path from analog
key features
• Modular multiformat design allows a mix
of any combination of analog or digital
video/audio, including HD
• Unparalleled system flexibility with tight
router control integration
• Optional standalone operation with internal
matrix for small installations
• Controls up to 15 channels with direct,
single-button selection
• Integrated, six-channel audio metering
for PGM, PST, and OFF AIR, plus stereo
to standard-definition (SD) to HD video processing using
modular video processors—all controlled by the same,
familiar control panel.
The modular Saturn system also supports multiple audio
formats—analog, digital, or mixed—to let you manage
any combination of signals. It can handle multiple audio
channels for each video program feed, and give you control
of up to 15 separate video/audio channels from a single
control panel.
Powerful Mixing
Each Saturn video processing unit contains two independent
linear keyers with very flexible source assignment. When
integrated with a Grass Valley routing switcher, you can
assign any source in your facility to either of the keyers.
You can also set up each keyer, including clip/gain settings,
fill selection, and shadow mode directly from the control
console. An internal matte generator is adjustable for hue,
saturation, and luminance by the matte knob. And all key
settings for each source are retained in memory and are
recalled when you make a new source selection.
The Saturn system’s audio processing units—both
• 16 user-assignable buttons for dynamically
storing/recalling source placement and
control panel configuration
• Digital effects option provides internal still
store, character generator, and up to 30
programmable effects

the analog stereo unit and the AES/EBU digital audio unit—provide
complete control over all audio signal-handling tasks. The system
provides dual independent mixers which offer a comprehensive range of
mixing functions and level controls, including fully adjustable over/under
mixing as well as mix/fade transitions to follow the video operations.
The Saturn audio system also provides comprehensive metering and
monitoring facilities for all critical signal paths. The control console
provides six-channel metering for preset, program, and off-air signals
and the monitor control allows you to select any signal or pair of signals
to feed the monitor speakers. Both Vu and PPM ballistics are available.
Each Saturn output channel can contain as many as six independently
controllable audio levels which can be addressed as stereo pairs or as
monaural levels. You can even address a combination of analog and
digital levels.
Additionally, the Saturn system features functions such as balance
control, phase reversal, and channel swap to ensure that you have the
ability to correct nonstandard signal conditions before they can become
on-air problems.
Flexible, Easy-To-Use Control Panel
The Saturn control panel provides full access to all system functions
while making basic operations easy. The result is complete flexibility and
foolproof on-air operation.
The Saturn control panel offers preset/take selection of up to 16
sources; full fade/mix/key transition capabilities with programmable
rates; comprehensive machine control functions with nested pre-rolls;
and a complete audio control section with meters, over/under mix
controls, and monitor controls. The logical layout of Saturn system
functions make the control panel extremely easy to learn and simple
to operate.
Networked or Standalone
You can equip a Saturn master control system with internal or external
switching matrices for standalone operation—no external router is
required.
For more complex systems, Saturn can be fed by dedicated outputs of
a larger routing switcher, giving full on-air access to any signal source
available to the routing system. In this networked environment, the
Saturn system can also take advantage of the flexibility of the Grass
Valley Jupiter control system to provide a machine control capability
and advanced router control such as path finding in mixed-format
environments.
Multichannel and Master Mode Operation
Increasingly, many broadcasters must generate multiple program
streams. Using one Saturn control panel, you can instantaneously
switch multiple on-air channels. In fact, you can control up to 15
separate channels from one console—with single-keystroke access to
any of them.
The Saturn system also features a multichannel master mode that
allows up to 14 on-air channels to follow the presets and transitions
selected on each channel. In more complex systems, you can use
a number of Saturn consoles with full access to any channel. This
approach enables multiple control panels to share switching operations
with complete freedom of assignment.
Automated Operation
Saturn switchers are designed to provide reliable, error-free operation
both in manual operation and when being controlled by an automation
system. A serial port on each Saturn video processor provides an
access point for automation control, using industry-standard serial
communication protocols. All major automation vendors support
Saturn control.
Rack Mounted Digital Effects Option
Designed to work seamlessly with the Saturn switcher, a rack mounted
10-bit digital video effects option comes with all the necessary
software and accessories to generate full 3D effects. This digital effects
system supports up to 30 effects that you can modify for each unique
application. In addition, the digital effects option provides a powerful
character generator and a still store to enhance your on-air look.
Bypass and Back-up switching
To improve reliability while adding operational flexibility, you can take
the Saturn system out of the on-air path by switching the current
program source to a separate bypass bus. This way, you can use the
switcher for offline testing, training, or other functions between master
control events.
In addition, the Saturn system features fully independent 16x1 switchers
for emergency backup situations. Each backup switcher can switch
a video signal and up to six associated audio signals for bypassing
the master control system completely in the event of an emergency.
You can control these back-up switchers either from a separate Grass
Valley Jupiter control panel (see below) or directly from the Saturn
control panel using the same channel select buttons used in channel
configurations. This section of the control panel also has a separate
power supply for added redundancy should the control panel’s main
power supplies fail.
Jupiter Control Interface
When combined with the Jupiter control system and any Grass Valley
router, the Saturn system becomes the centerpiece of an incredibly
powerful integrated broadcast control network.
The Jupiter control system provides complete serial or parallel control
over all types of VTRs, cart machines, and disk-based storage systems,
as well as seamless integration with tally/status display systems and
external switchers from both Thomson and third-party vendors.
An optional machine control/tally interface unit provides contact closures
for starting and stopping VTRs or for providing on-air tally indications to
sources as required.
