information books and illustrated non-fiction for the local market as well as the international coedition
market. Our international rights sales are expanding rapidly owing to our quality of content and
production, as well as our ability to deliver. Most of our co-editions reprint regularly and our top authors
have become as well-known in Europe and Australia as they are at home – a lovely feather in their cap!
On the craft front we are most exited about Artful ways with mixed media by Angie Franke and
Monique Day-Wilde. This talented duo continue to delight with their creativity and innovative ideas.
Regular authors Tracy Boomer and Deborah Morbin have revamped their Cleanline Scrapbooking with
completely new pages and additional techniques. Now offered as Scrapbooking: back to basics, we have
no doubt that this book will be as popular as its cleanline predecessor.
Katrien’s Cakes has had us jumping up and down with excitement (and maybe a little sugar high!).
Her cake designs are simply phenomenal and we are proudly showing this book at Frankfurt. Her
gorgeous book is joined by the 2012 Family Cook Daily Planner by mother and daughter team Christelle
Erasmus and Alana van de Berg, the 2011 version having won the prestigious Gourmand Award for most
innovative cook book in South Africa in 2010.
Spanning two categories is When your blessings don’t count: how to recognise and overcome post-natal depression.
Written with profound empathy and based on thorough research by Linda Lewis, who not only suffered from
PND but went on to do a masters degree specialising in it, we believe that this book will change many lives.
Fresh ideas for Jacobean embroidery
hazel blomkamp
Whether you refer to it as crewel or Jacobean, this free form of surface embroidery has
been around for centuries and is still popular amongst needle artists today. In this book
Hazel Blomkamp uses a wide selection of materials to update techniques and inspire
embroiderers to explore whilst working loosely within the confines of crewel work
styles. Learn how to be creative with fabric, threads, beads and alternative stitches,
borrow ing techniques from other forms of needlework, and still produce a product
typical of crewel or Jacobean embroidery. The original designs include
• Projects including beads and metal threads to add sparkle and texture
• Monochrome embroidery making use of a variety of threads and beads
• Techniques employed in needle-made laces with designs defined by texture
• More traditional embroidery including shading and satin stitch and the many
variations of trellis couching to provide texture and interest
Hazel Blomkamp has dabbled with all the needlecrafts since childhood. When her children
were babies she developed a passion for embroidery to break the tedium of life with toddlers,
using it as her evening reward for having got through the day with her sanity intact. Her
children are now young adults and she still embroiders in front of the television every night.
She has been designing for the past 18 years. Preferring to design projects which appear
to be traditional, she pushes the boundaries by introducing other forms of needlecraft into
traditional techniques, exploring further in everything that she does. Along with designing,
she runs a busy website from home. She teaches at her home studio, in Pieter maritzburg,
KZN, and travels throughout South Africa and to Australia teaching embroidery and fine
beadwork. She is a regular contributor to South African and Australian embroidery magazines
and is a columnist for South African Stitches Magazine.
Scrapbooking: back to basics
Deborah Morbin & Tracy booMer
Scrapbooking: back to basics is unlike most other books on scrapbooking in that it
keeps the focus on the photos rather than on the embellishments that can overwhelm
them. Written by two of South Africa’s foremost craft authors, it is technique-based
with easy step-by-step instructions clearly illustrated with step-by-step photographs.
Every technique, original as well as traditional, is illustrated with top quality photographs
of finished pages where it has been applied. There is a load of tried and tested
hints and tips, as well as cost-cutting advice scattered throughout the book. It contains
all the information you need to get started and, as it includes basic as well as advanced
techniques, it is suitable for both beginners and advanced scrapbookers. Over 150
sample pages will inspire and inform as captions tell you what you don’t see, rather
than stating the obvious.
“I’ve stayed away from scrapbooking for a long time, because I felt that much of what
was being offered and taught actually detracted from the photographs themselves,
shifting the focus to the (usually rather expensive) embellishments. And then I found
this book ... Tracy and Deborah have succeeded in making scrapbooking accessible,
simple and engaging.” Red Balloon Craft Directory
Deborah Morbin and Tracy Boomer count among South Africa’s foremost craft authors.
Their best-selling books include Stylish crafts, All new decoupage, Baby & toddler scrapbooking
and Mosaics – decorative ideas. This dynamic duo’s scrapbooking classes were
immensely popular owing to their teaching style and ideas (which they bring through into
their books). They continue to experiment with different crafts, often using interesting
techniques across media. In all their applications they have always followed a less-is-more
approach, believing that over-decorating detracts rather than enhances. Scrapbooking for
them is no different and, even though they admit that when it comes to children, ‘lessdoesn’t-always-have-to-be-more’,
they still believe in keeping the focus on the photographs,
exactly where it belongs.
Katrien’s cakes
katrien van zyl
This book shows you how to create beautifully decorated cakes: fresh, contemporary,
fun and irresistible. It is filled with techniques and ideas for everyone. With more than
20 original decorating designs to copy, as well as smaller chocolate decorations, mini
and shortcuts resulting from years of experimenting to find the best ingredients and
techniques for perfect results. Tried and tested recipes for cakes as well as scrumptious
fillings, guidelines for portion sizes and templates for deco rations all contribute to
making this an essential addition to the library of any baking enthusiast.
Lavishly illustrated with exquisite photographs, this book attests to the fact that cake
decorating has become an art form. The projects are graded from easy to advanced,
so there really is something for everyone.
Katrien van Zyl proudly served her first cake at the age of 12 and knew then that she would
love to bake for a living. A self-proclaimed chocoholic, she combined these two loves when
baking her best friend’s wedding cake. After completing a four-year degree in home economics
at Stellenbosch University she worked in the catering industry for several years, where
she became involved in wedding planning and commercial baking for weddings and parties,
among others. After her own wedding seven years ago, she started working from home,
marketing her original wedding and party cake designs from her website, to leave time for
helping out in her husband’s business, and being full-time stepmom to his three boys. With
four hungry men in the house there is always something delicious in the oven, and they
thoroughly enjoyed gobbling up the leftover chocolate during the photoshoot for the book.
What can I plant?
A quick reference to foolproof plant selection
tanya visser & anna celliers
At last! A gardening book featuring contemporary plants for contemporary gardeners.
The book is brimful of easy-to-read information covering plant descriptions, useful
growing advice, hints for success and the latest gardening trends to help enthusiastic
gardeners gain the most benefit from every trip to their local nursery, and to breathe
new life into their gardens. The plants were carefully selected to include the top selling
modern hybrids along with many of the ‘old-fashioned’ plants that gave rise to them
– plants grown in years gone by, which have inspired people around the world and
will warm the hearts of both newcomers and experienced gardeners. The plants are
all readily available and have been chosen for their versatility and ease of cultivation –
plants you can count on. When holding What can I plant? in your hands, the answer to
this age-old question will no longer elude you. Instead of anguishing over plant choice,
you can now enjoy getting re-introduced to old gardening favourites, but also meeting
the latest plant releases in the gardening world – there are always new plants to
befriend. What can I plant? is Tanya and Anna’s second collaboration. Their first book,
Homegrown garden design, became a best-seller within weeks of its release.
Tanya Visser is first and foremost a gardener, but full-time gardening really doesn’t pay well
(especially when it’s in your own garden), so she is also the editor of The Gardener and Die
Tuinier magazines and presenter of The Gardener television series.
Anna Celliers holds a National Diploma in Horticulture from what used to be Pretoria
Technikon and has many years’ experience in garden design and lay-out for both private
and corporate clients. After several years of writing various columns she was appointed
at Lonehill Trading’s The Gardener/Die Tuinier where she writes features about all the
pleasures of gardening and works as assistant editor of Die Tuinier. She also has a regular
gardening column in the major week-end newspapers.
jaclyn venter
A do-it-yourself book teaching you to apply scrapbooking techniques to everyday
items, turning them into gorgeous gifts or decorative items for your home. The focus
• Turn discarded children’s board books into new, personalized stories
• Apply finishes ranging from vintage to rustic, from girlish to sophisticated
• Display photographs in clever, creative ways using assemblage and collage
runs two small businesses. Jaclyn is married and lives in Centurion.
Fact finder
helen lewis
A fun-filled collection of facts aimed at children in the intermediate school phase (grades 4
– 6). It is a basic, but general, reference book integrating all areas of the national curriculum:
Arts and Culture; Economic & Management Sciences (EMS); Language; Life Orientation
(LO); Mathematics; Natural Sciences; Social Sciences (History and Geography) and Technology.
In addition to the basic information that will also be taught at school, each section
contains loads of interesting asides, references to other sources of information, and suggestions
for things to do and places to visit. Parents have a huge selection of books to choose
from for younger children, and there are many studyguides available for high schoolers,
but this age group has been neglected with hardly any references aimed at their level.
With over 600 photographs and commissioned illustrations, this book is an indispensable
companion for every child who will lap up the information and have fun sharing the facts.
A happy human brain
dr pierre van der spuy
People who remain happy whether they enjoy enormous success or face painful disasters,
possess, in their brains, a core of stability and optimism. This book is a practical guide on
what these people do on a daily basis to achieve this. As the first book for the layperson
that combines groundbreaking research in the major fields of science aimed at understanding
the human condition, it will shatter many of your convictions on what makes us human,
happy and authentically successful. Specifically, the book addresses three main questions:
• What steps can we take to be more happy today?
• Why does an obsession with material success rob us of our happiness and humanity?
• How do parenting in early childhood and our culture influence our happiness and humanity?
