OWNING HER CROWN
KATLEGO
BOWENI
Despite the societal patriarchy and stereotypes that
only thin can crack it in the modelling agency, Katlego
Boweni, a Klerksdorp model in the plus size modelling
world aims to hang the moon and the stars
By Bonolo Kgarane
With just one year experience
in the industry the
enthused, curvaceous,
beautiful Katlego owns
her crown; a woman who
is showing the country
that what matters is not
your body size but how
you carry yourself.
From winning the nationwide
plus size model
search in 2013 which
gave her a break to be
where she is, the vibrant
model already sees a future
in this industry. “This
is a very huge market for
me not to take advantage
of. Although I do not
think I would want to hit
the 10 year mark as a
plus size model, but rather
I would like to groom a
lot of young women who
today still find it hard to
accept how they look like
and always want to live
according to the society’s
expectations,” says the
Advanced Labour Law
graduate.
Katlego believes that the
modelling world is still
considered as an industry
for lean people hence
terms like ‘plus size’ is
still used to name women
who wear 32+. “I think it
is time we are labelled as
models and do away with
the term ‘plus size model’.
Many women still feel
offended that models are
being called plus size and
I think we have put a bit
too much time and effort,
or ‘weight’ on the term.
There are people who still
call me ‘a fat model’ so I
think I would be happy if
we are labelled as models,”
clarifies the assertive
model.
The Labour Relations
consultant discourages
the stigma that is associated
with being a corpulence
woman that they
are not taking care of themselves; “Being plus sized does not mean we live
on burgers and ice cream. No. we do not. Apparently we are usually very
unhealthy and do not exercise, I mean there are plenty of women who are
fully figured and love to exercise. I take very good care of myself and watch
what I eat but still, that does not imply that I would want to shred my waist
line to suit the perception of the society”
Although Katlego has made strides, she says all was not built in a day but
her first show with Pano De Pedra Lingerie fashion show has helped her a
lot in building her confidence. “I have never in my life thought I would walk
half naked in a room full of people with such confidence, it took guts and it
was an experience of a life time”
With a couple of photo shoots and fashion shows coming up in August
2017, we can expect Katlego on our screens and ramps.
MAKING ENDS MEET THROUGH UNITY
By Mbulelo Mambukwe
South Africa has a high rate of unemployment with approximately over a
million young people educated and un-educated who are still jobless. Some
resort to crime and alcohol and drug abuse.
Tebogo Moagi, Lesego Ntehelang, Lobotseng Buchwane and Mike Mohaji;
this quartet, upon seeing the lack of job opportunities decided to venture into
business. Tebogo initially co-founded and established a glass and aluminium
company which he later merged with the trio who were running a garden and
cleaning company.
The birth of Conraine Services prompted the four to add the repairs and maintenance
services division to their business as there had been a demand from
their clients from time to time.
Situated in the CBD of Westonaria, Johannesburg; Conraine Services is able to
attract clients from the public sector, the private sector and individuals from
around the country. “We offer a range of services from manufacturing, supply
and fitment of aluminium window frames, sliding doors, folding doors, shower
doors, mirrors and table tops”, says Tebogo. The company also has auxiliary
services where they offer painting and tiling, steel windows and door frame
supply.
Conraine Services is not only benefiting its founders. It also plays part in curbing
the rate of unemployment. They have a team of young and hardworking
employees working in various divisions within the company and around the
country. The company empowers its employees through skills training that
are provided by GEP (Gauteng Enterprise Propeller) to ensure excellence in the
services that they provide. “We aim to grow even more and perhaps expand
to other parts of the Continent as the products we are offering are always in
demand”, concludes Tebogo the manager.
PASSIONATE ACTIVIST
By Bonolo Kgarane
At the age of 9, it may have
seemed like nothing but a pipe
dream; but Pilane Bubu (32) ultimately
diverted from societal
expectations of being a lawyer or
even a doctor to focus on music
as a career. “I believe that I can
change the world through creativity
and passion and that the
world would be a better place if
we all did more of what we are
passionate about,” points out
the Creative Lifestyle Activist.
It is indeed
never
too late
to accomplish
your
dreams
The Mthata born singer who
neglected her creative journey
from when she was in matric until
the age of 25 shared her music
interest with her twin sister.
“We loved school assembly and
going to the Chapel every morning.
We would come home in the
evenings and take turns in singing
to school hymn book back to
back,” says Pilani. A shared journey
Pilani had as her family supported
her and her passion by
buying her musical instruments
from a tender age.
15
Pilani, who has a BCom Law degree from the University
of Pretoria believes that music should not just be a
matter of entertainment but should be taken serious as
a profession. “I always thought of music as a gift and
that it should be given as a gift. I did not want it to be
something that brings the bacon home until I realized
that if I do not take it professionally, I won’t make it
professionally, “elaborates the self-proclaimed Warrior
of Light.
Various artists feel comfortable in a certain genre
whereas others fuse genres and break musical barriers
with their sound. Pilani says that in South Africa specifically,
we are not as open when it comes to new music.
She has already established a musical movement
called Retrogade that will be launching soon. Pilani
feels that it is high time that the country gives ear to
innovative music.
Musicians still appear to be having challenges with
how their music is being received and distributed, not
to mention being genuinely recognized for their sound.
This comes after the controversy instigated by what Riky
Rick (SA Rapper) recently uttered under suppressed infuriation
at this year’s Metro FM Music Awards when he
mentioned how the ceremony was questionable, and
that viewers were aware it was rigged.
Pilani was fortunate to have worked with renowned RJ
Benjamin on her first EP thst had her single Misunderstood
on the play list of 25 radio stations across the
country. Her album ‘Journey Of A Heart Part II: Warrior
of Light’ has two singles (Free and Sweet Love) that are
currently on various radio stations.
HAVING RIGHTS, SIMPLY BE-
CAUSE YOU ARE HUMAN
WITH HUMAN RIGHTS BEING CELEBRATED ON THE 21ST
OF MARCH ANNUALLY IN SOUTH AFRICA, THERE ARE STILL
INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE THEIR RIGHTS TRAMPLED ON.
BY UNRECO STAFF
Many South Africans in the LGBTIQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender,
Intersex and Queer) community still face challenges relative to homophobia,
hate crime and discrimination. Given this, Rainbow Seeds, an NPO in Bloemfontein
has taken it upon itself to look after the well-being of the LGBTIQ community
in terms of health and general support. The NPO offers HIV counselling
and testing, TB and STI Screenings, door to door outreach as well as host a
range of support groups. Support groups are there to provide a support system
to those who have been rejected by their family. There are also individuals who
are looking to come out as well as those affected and infected with HIV and
not certain where to go or feel comfortable to talk to about these issues.
The NPO also provides services to men who have sex with men (MSM). These
are male persons who engage in sexual activity with members of the same
sex, regardless of how they identify themselves. Many of these men according
to Gleo Booysen from Rainbow Seeds, do not sexually identify as gay, homosexual
or bisexual but that their actions are mainly for sexual pleasure.
Gleo says that there is still a lack of understanding as to what the community
is and that they are often sexualised. “We still face a tremendous amount
of gender based violence towards the community and many Trans identified
people struggle to get access to hormones and other health based needs,
not to mention support.” Awareness campaigns are piloted not only by Rainbow
Seeds but also by various organizations throughout the country to fight
against the ill-treatment and of LGBTIQ people and secondary victimization
14
Pride events are held in several cities to increase visibility for the
LGBTIQ community in a public space. During these events, a march
down the streets takes place whereby LGBTIQ people, devotees,
family and friends show the pride they have. LGBTIQ people around
the world face discrimination, persecution and violence simply for
expressing who they are and who they love.
FASHION WEEK LAUNCH
FASHION WEEK DRAWS OUT INNO-
VATION, AUDACIOUSNESS AND
EVOLUTION IN LOCAL FASHION DE-
SIGNERS
By UNRECO staff
Fashion is an eternally evolving
outlet for expression. It is an art
form that speaks to individuals
on a personal level. It is inspired
by art, music, history and culture.
Recently, a prestigious fashion
and lifestyle launch was held in
Bloemfontein with the aim of
letting us in on the showcasing
of the best and talented designers
for Free State Fashion Week
(FSFW). With this year, hosting
the show for the second time,
the actual fashion week will take
place on the 26 – 29 April 2017
at Pacofs Bloemfontein. Under
the theme of Breaking Boundaries,
FSFW will be featuring already
established designers and
those that are up-coming.
FSFW CEO Candy Smith highlighted
that the main objective of
the initiative is to promote the artistic
and innovative work of designers,
to offer them not only a
platform to utilize their bestowed
talents but an opportunity to
reach greater heights through
maximum exposure.“This year
we also aim to break boundaries
and teach designers skills
that can open national and international
platforms for them.
This will be vastly achieved
when we open doors of the Free
State Fashion Hub that will be
launched soon,” said the CEO.
Things are already in motion for
the Fashion Hub as classes are
expected to start in June 2017.
Candy appealed to stores and
the community at large to support
local designers by essentially
purchasing their products.
The school will be providing the
following qualifications; Jewellery
Design and Manufacturing
with an NQF Level 2 – 4 and
Dress Making & Design, Textiles,
Footwear and Leather Design
and Manufacturing with an NQF
Level 1 & 4 amongst others.
Bonolo Mokoena who is a young
designer has already had the
greatest opportunity of being
sent to Turkey by the FSFW to
refine her skills and show case
what she already mastered. The
trendy designer will also be one
of the lecturers at the Fashion
Hub lead by Candy Smith.
The inauguration also saw upcoming
fashion designers in
numbers as they could not wait
to hear how the fashion week
would unfold. Vusi Majale, who
is also part of the fashion week
was at the launch;“I am here to
mingle with fellow designers.
The launch provides us with accurate
information pertaining to
the events of the actual fashion
week.”
FSFW not only provides a platform
for up-coming and established
designers to showcase
their work but to also assist in
the promotion and development
of small and medium enterprises
in the Free State, especially
those whose scope of production
is related to fashion. Through the
fashion week,the promotion of
tourism businesses such as airlines,
accommodation services,
car dealerships, travel agents,
BONOLO MOKOENA - FSFW APPRENTICE
and accessory makers prevails
by having them as exhibitors at
the event.
Every business needs financial
booster, and FSFW has the Andrew
Scholtz Foundation on the
forefront, essentiall ywith the
soon to be launched fashion
school. The foundation has seen
to it that FSFW’s vision of developing
the Fashion Hub materializes
as they funded the machinery
and other equipment for the
school. Still on finances, the other
benefactors of the event were
from Standard Bank. Their main
objective as highlighted by Will
Tshwene is that they help diversify
the economy in the province
and attract more investors.
As if the event was not alluring
enough, OleLedimo of House
of Ole and a Judge on Raw Silk
Judge(Reality Fashion Show on
Sabc 1) graced the occasion. He
reiterated that the community
ought to support local designers
and grow the fashion market.
He further went on to appeal to
designers to also deliver quality
products in order to be taken seriously.

NNEKWA TSAJWA
It is not how you start but how you finish that matters…
FROM KIDS’ SHOWS TO SEASONED ACTOR
By UNRECO staff
With a dream to see himself behind the camera as an actor to landing
gigs as a child presenter, the now all grown up Nnekwa Tsajwa (31) has
finally made it into acting. When growing up many children got to see
Nnekwa on The Molo show, X–Attitude and Big time before moving onto
Jam Alley. “The transition from the kid’s TV to a youth entertainment platform
was appreciated greatly. I had been looking to enter that realm for
a while at that point, partly because of any young person’s eagerness to
grow up and be perceived as an adult.”
The youngest of seven children not only tapped into presenting and acting
but was part of a music group called Black Gold that has a hit song
‘come on come on’. “In 1999 I wrote my first rhyme. I have been experimenting
with music since I was young. Before Hip hop I used to regard
myself as an R&B singer. I am a huge Michael Jackson fan,” says Nnekwa.
The Ga Rankuwa star recently joined the cast of Etv’s Gold Diggers as
Clement. He says that they are total opposites; “Clement is despicable! It
was uncomfortable at times to play Clement, especially when he was being
particularly immoral. At first I would cringe when reading the script, but
hopefully I did the character justice.”
Amongst other things that Nnekwa appreciates about his job is being
around legendary actors and the talent that puts the entire production
team together. The opportunity of playing different characters and telling
stories is what puts a smile on the young actor.

LOOKS INTO THE NEW
NOKIA 3310
AS IT MAKES A COMEBACK
Nearly after seventeen years of
its debut, Nokia 3310 has been
re-launched once again. Recently
in Barcelona at the Mobile
World Congress 2017, Nokia
announced that it will re-launch
its iconic mobile phone, 3310,
which was initially released back
in 2010.
Previously, Nokia launched its
first android phone. When Nokia
3310 was launched back then,
it became everybody’s instant
favorite. The company had to
produce more than 126 million
phones until it was completely
phased out in 2006.To re-launch
the phone, Nokia has joined
hands with Finnish manufacturing
company, HMD Global, to
launch a new range of mobile
phones.
a long battery life. There will be
no Facebook or Snapchat to take
away the battery of the phone.
Furthermore, the phone will also
have a 2-megapixel camera with
only 16 megabytes of memory.
There will be various color options
for this updated model. For
now, the phone will be available
in four colors – black, red, yellow,
and grey. Overall, the phone
has got a basic shape. Unlike the
sturdiness of the previous version,
the new Nokia 3310 is a
little smaller, thinner, and lighter
all around.
Nokia’s website also says that
the updated model of Nokia
3310 will also include the
‘Snake’ game that was on the
original phone. This will surely
give you a nostalgia.
So, how different will the updated
model be from the original?
The new Nokia 3310 will have
an even better battery life than
the original one. It will have a
one-month standby time and 22
hours of talk time. Since it’s not a
smartphone, you will get to enjoy
