GEORGETOWN – George
Peabody, or at least his portrait, is
back home at the top of the stairs
in the public library that bears his
name.
financier and philanthropist, who
donated the funds for the town’s
first library, was taken away almost
two years ago for restoration, a
period of time library director Sarah
Cognata called “his vacation.”
IPSWICH – It is nothing new to the coaches at Ace Gymnastics to have their young gymnasts excel in
competitions. In its 20-year history, several of its gymnasts have earned college scholarships and competed well at
the sport’s highest levels.
This month it was clear that the gym’s storied tradition continues as four of its teenage gymnasts, who have
trained at Ace for most of their lives, shined at the statewide competition in Shrewsbury and are headed to
Springfield next month to compete in the regionals.
Two of Ace’s 16-year-old gymnasts are also likely to be invited to the national competition, or The Show, as it is
called, that will be held this summer in Indianapolis, IN.
Kylie Gorgeyni of North Reading and Riley Daniels of Rowley, both high school sophomores, are level 10
athletes, just a step below the Elite category, where one finds Olympic gymnasts.
Both young women expect to compete in college, probably on full scholarships. Although only a sophomore and
a year before she can sign a commitment letter, Kylie has already been offered a full scholarship at the University
of New Hampshire. Continued on page 3
In 2015, the Friends of the
Library decided that the Peabody
portrait needed restoration.
Having been in this library and
its predecessor building for almost
150 years, the portrait, painted
in the late 1860s, was showing its
age. The ornate frame was chipped
and missing pieces. The paint was
fading. And it needed a new system
for hanging the large painting.
So the town, using $13,300 from
its Community Preservation funds,
turned to the Oliver Brothers
in Beverly, the nation’s leading
art restoration and conservation
company for the last 160 years, to
restore the portrait.
After storing it for almost a year
while the town raised the funds,
the firm began the restoration last
summer and completed it this
winter in time for the portrait to
be rehung in its cherished spot this
month.
“We’re thrilled. It was an empty
space without him,” Cognata said.
When it was rehung, “everyone
could see a difference.”
The colors of the portrait are
again vibrant. The chipped pieces
of the frame have been replaced.
Painted in England, the portrait
depicts Peabody standing in front
of a formal desk, his right hand
inside his coat, a typical pose for
portraits in the 19th century.
He holds a card in his left hand
addressed to the chairman of the
Peabody Library, Georgetown,
Massachusetts.
Taped to the back of the portrait
is the card. It is signed by George
Peabody.
There is also a note describing
how the painting was created.
Peabody was photographed in a
studio in Brighton, England in
1866. The image was enlarged,
traced on canvas and the oil paint
was applied. It appears that the
painting was completed by 1869.
Peabody, pronounced PEEbe-dee,
was born to a poor
Massachusetts family on Feb. 18,
Continued from page 1
1795. He would become one of
the world’s leading bankers and
founded the J.P. Morgan banking
house. Peabody was also extremely
generous, donating funds to create
the Peabody Trust, which built and
maintains housing for the poor in
England; the Peabody Institute,
a conservatory and universitypreparatory
school in northern
Baltimore, and the George Peabody
Library in Baltimore as well as the
library in Georgetown.
In recognition of his generosity,
Peabody, who lived to be 74, was
awarded the Congressional Gold
Medal and is considered to be the
father of modern philanthropy.
Peabody began his business
career in dry goods, but soon
turned to banking. In 1837, he
moved to London, the center of
international finance. He partnered
with Junius Spencer Morgan in
1854, a partnership that would
become J.P. Morgan.
Peabody took an interest in
Georgetown when he would stay
with his sister, Judith Peabody
Russell Daniels, who lived on
Main Street, while he was in
Massachusetts.
On Sept. 19, 1866, at the laying
of the cornerstone for the Peabody
Memorial Church, which was
built with another gift from him,
Peabody announced that he would
fund the Georgetown libQrary.
The wood-framed Italianate
library, built on Library Street, was
designed by the Boston architectural
firm of Bryant & Gilman. It opened
on July 3, 1868.
The library was moved at the
beginning of the 20th Century to
Lincoln Park and opened in 1909.
Almost a century later, the library
was expanded to add an accessible
main entrance at ground level
and an interior atrium/lobby that
preserves the brick facade of the
rotunda.
From his perch, Peabody would
appear to be pleased with all the
activities of the modern library he
made possible.
Ace Gymnasts Are a Winning Family
Continued from page 1
The regional competitions are
stressful because the gymnasts
and their coaches are working
hard to win an invitation to the
national competition, said Amy
Patch, coach and manager of Ace
Gymnastics.
The national competitions are
calmer, although it attracts coaches
from every college gymnastic
team. At the nationals Riley and
Kiley will be competing against
hundreds of other gymnasts, some
of whom are home schooled and
work out twice a day, Patch said.
But for Kiley, who has gone to
the nationals five times before, it
will be “old hat,” Patch said. “She
gets significantly better each year.
Twelve-year-old Aquinnah
(Quinnie) Weherein of
Newburyport and 13-year-old
Madison Young of West Newbury
compete as level eights. Both did
well in the state competition,
placing on multi-player events and
coming in fifth in the All-Around
competition.
Each of the gymnasts has her
favorite event. Kiley loves the
bars and is an expert at vault. In
the state competition, she scored
9.825 out of a possible 10.
Madison also loves vault.
And Quinnie loves the floor
competition because in it “I can
show my personality and choose
my own music,” she said.
As excited as the four gymnasts
were last week about their success
at the state competition and the
upcoming regional competitions,
they mostly wanted to talk about
to identify the constellations of
spring! At this time of year there are
no fewer than ten first-magnitude
(really bright!) stars in the evening
sky at once. No other season, not
even winter, can offer so many. We’ll
set up our viewing station on the
boardwalk at Crane Beach to gaze at
the more common clusters such as
the Big Dipper, and also at those we
might not be familiar with, including
the zodiacal constellations Leo the
Lion and Virgo the Maiden. We will
SUNDAY, APRIL 2nd
DUCKS-R-US
In early April, the coastal waters,
rivers, and lakes of Massachusetts’
North Shore are wonderful places to
observe ducks. Most of the species
that have wintered here are still
present, and many early migrants
have returned to our area. Under
favorable conditions, over 20 species
of ducks can be observed. During a
previous trip, we saw 21 species of
ducks and two species of geese. On
this all-day adventure, we will bird the
Plum Island estuary, the Merrimack
River, Cherry Hill Reservoir, and
many sites on Cape Ann in hopes of
finding these beautiful birds. Target
species will include harlequin duck,
Barrow’s goldeneye, three species of
scoter, and many more. Sun, Apr
Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
This is the final column of this
series. If you missed any of the past
segments, you can find them at
www.thetowncommon.com.
I’ve heard of some new cosmetic
techniques that can improve
smiles. Are they appropriate for
older adults?
Older adults can benefit from
many of the options available
today for improving the look of a
smile. Your dentist can describe
and discuss with you the range of
treatments that would be right
for you. Part of older adulthood
is the acceptance of aging and
the development of realistic
expectations for appearance. In
that context, dental treatment for
older adults can be a healthy and
adaptive way of maintaining dental
health and emotional well-being.
Our teeth and mouth play
a critical role in psychological
development and well-being
throughout our lives. Modern
dentistry has expanded esthetic
options for people of all ages.
Coupled with good oral hygiene
Brighter Smiles...
Dental Changes with Age – Part 4
and regular dental visits, cosmetic
techniques can help improve the
appearance of your smile.
I’m on a limited, fixed income
and can’t really afford regular
dental treatment. Are there any
resources available to help me?
Even if you cannot pay for dental
care, you don’t need to live without
it. Thousands of dentists across the
country assist the elderly on fixed
incomes by offering their services at
reduced fees through dental societysponsored
assistance programs.
The availability of such aid varies
from one community to another,
so call your local dental society for
information about where you can
find the nearest assistance programs
and low-cost dental care locations,
such as public health and dental
school clinics. Other sources of
such information are local social
service organizations.
What is dentistry doing to
better serve older adults?
Dentists are experiencing a quiet
revolution in their offices as the
number of older patients increases
steadily. The profession knows that
this burgeoning population group
is wearing fewer dentures and is
keeping natural teeth longer. Also,
we know that some patients in this
group require special consideration
because reduced mobility and
dexterity may make daily oral
hygiene difficult. In addition,
medical conditions and impairment
are factors that dentists take into
account for certain patients.
Sometimes, lack of awareness
about available treatments and
techniques leads older patients to
make false assumptions about their
dental health and tolerate conditions
such as toothaches, bleeding gums
and clicking dentures. Dentists
are gaining practical information
on how to effectively manage the
treatment needs of older patients.
Many dental societies have set
up access programs to assist older
adults, individuals with physical
or mental disabilities or indigent
persons to receive care.
The dental profession is
increasingly sensitive to the special
needs of and the importance of
dental health in the older patient.
Older adults are more health
National Boys & Girls Club Week: 3/27to 3/31
On March 27-31, 2017, Boys &
Girls Club of Lower Merrimack Valley
joins more than 4000 Club across
America with its annual celebration
of National Boys & Girls Club Week.
The week-long celebration calls
attention to the important role Boys
& Girls Clubs play to enable nearly
4 million young people each year to
achieve great futures.
This year’s theme – ‘Open the
Door. Take the Tour’ – encourages
communities, families, friends and
supporters of its Club members to
experience first-hand how the Boys &
Girls Club of Lower Merrimack Valley
is making a difference in the lives of
young people.
“Our youth are the heart of the
community and it’s our responsibility
to provide a place that will positively
influence and guide them during
critical out-of-school hours,” said Jim
Keenan, Executive Director of Boys
& Girls Club of Lower Merrimack
Valley. “More than 11 million youth
have no place to go after school and
Boys & Girls Clubs offer a place where
kids can learn, grow and be successful
in school and life. Boys & Girls Club
Week is a great time to see how we
impact the lives of young people
through programs aimed to promote
academic success, a healthy lifestyle
and good character and leaderships
skills.”
We have planned a fun filled week
of programs, activities and events.
Some highlighted activities during
National Boys & Girls Club Week are
as follows: Check out our website for
times and full schedule of events.
Monday: Trivia Extravaganza
Tuesday: Teen Takeover
Wednesday: Open the Door Take
the Tour Open House
Thursday: Games Room Festival
Friday: Friday Fun Night Movie
About the Boys & Girls Club of
Lower Merrimack Valley.
For the past 17 years, the Boys &
Girls Club of Lower Merrimack Valley
has provided a fun, safe and positive
environment for youth, ages 6-18, to
learn, play, meet new friends and grow
as individuals. From sports, digital arts,
cooking, sewing and media to group
activities and tutoring, the Boys &
Girls Club of Lower Merrimack Valley
provides top-quality award winning
programs to nearly 140 area youth
each day. Whether it is learning how
an individual can make a difference in
his/her community or learning how
to play basketball – the Club strives
to help youth feel important and put
their dreams of a great future within
reach. Club membership is only $25
for the year. For more information
