Parenting
Children’s Parties
by Kate Duggan
Balloon candles
available from
www.dotcomgiftshop.com
Keep the fun levels up and
your stress levels down with
our top party tips.
OUTDOOR PARTIES
Most kids love a treasure hunt,
and it ties in well with a pirate,
knights or princess party. You
could leave a series of clues
leading to one big stash of
small prizes to split (chocolate
coins tend to go down well).
Or you could hide sweets,
trinkets and other mini prizes
around the garden. Just make
sure you keep a few extras to
hand, to avoid any tears.
Once they’ve found the
treasure, you could:
• Have a water pistol fight.
• Challenge the kids to an
obstacle course.
• Hold a mini-Olympics,
complete with ‘real’ medals.
• Set up a tin can alley, or a
game of skittles.
PARTIES FOR CRAFT-LOVING
CHILDREN
If your child loves nothing
more than creating a new
work of art, why not dedicate
the party to ‘making stuff’?
Depending on the age of the
children, you could:
• Make masks out of paper
plates, feathers, stickers,
glitter and so on.
• Paint pots or trinket boxes.
• Decorate plates or mugs
with porcelain pens.
• Raid the recycling box to
make robots, spaceships or
monsters.
Make sure you tell parents
that the children will need old
clothes or painting aprons.
And bear in mind that paint
may not have dried by the
time the party finishes, so
you’ll have to deliver the
artwork at a later date.
PARTIES FOR PRE-TEENS
Pre-teens may prefer to head
out somewhere with a couple
of friends. If they do want a
party though, you could:
• Host a sleepover, complete
with movie, popcorn and a
chocolate fountain.
• Hold a fashion show. Just
raid some charity shops and
let kids loose on the clothes
with fabric pens, glitter and
badges.
• Have a disco party, with glow
sticks, a glitter ball and a
dance-off.
PARTIES THAT LET YOU
TAKE IT EASY
If this all sounds like a bit too
much work, you could turn to
the professionals. From hiring
a children’s entertainer to
heading to a soft-play centre,
there are plenty of options
to choose from. And they’re
often not as expensive as you
might think. Some companies
offer a full package including
entertainment, food and a
party bag, which can actually
work out around the same
price as you’d pay to buy it all
yourself.
Alternatively, you could let
your child choose two or three
friends to take out for the day.
Head to the zoo, trampoline
park, cinema, theme park, or
just out for a picnic.
TOP TIPS FOR A
SUCCESSFUL PARTY:
• Don’t invite too many
people. A good rule of
thumb is to only invite one
or two more than the age
of your child. So if your son
is turning five, you might
want to invite six or seven
children. However, it is a very
rough guide, as all children
are different.
• Consider how many children
there are in the class or
friendship group. Inviting
12 of the 14 girls in your
daughter’s class could cause
a lot of upset.
• Don’t overwhelm your
child. Younger children may
struggle with lots of excited
guests, loud music and bright
lights. Try to create a safe,
quiet space where they can
retreat if they need to.
• Don’t feel you have to spend
a fortune. Often the simpler,
cheaper parties are the ones
that children love the best.
• Rope in as many helpers as
you can!
Cake and
Bake
Chocolate & Orange
Hot Cross Buns
Give the classic hot cross bun a delicious twist with the addition of
chocolate chips, orange zest and piped chocolate crosses!
Ingredients:
• 500g strong white plain
flour, plus extra for
dusting
• 1/2 tsp salt
• 2 tsp ground mixed spice
• Zest of 1 orange
• 50g caster sugar
• 1 x 7g sachet easy-blend
or fast-action dried yeast
• 300ml hand-hot milk
• 55g butter, cubed
• 1 large egg, beaten
• 75g dried mixed fruit
• 50g dark chocolate chips
FOR THE GLAZE AND
CROSSES
• 1-2 tbsp warmed golden
syrup
• 50g dark chocolate,
melted
Makes 12
Ready in 2 hours,
45 minutes
1. Sift the flour into a large bowl and stir in the salt, mixed spice, orange
zest, sugar and dried yeast. Make a well in the middle.
2. Bring the milk almost to the boil in a small pan then stir in the butter until
melted. Leave the liquid to cool until it’s just hand hot. Pour the liquid
into the well with the beaten egg and mix with a round- bladed knife to
make a soft and slightly sticky dough. Turn the dough out onto a lightly
floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic,
adding a little more flour if the dough is too sticky.
3. Place the dough in a clean, lightly greased bowl and cover with oiled
cling film. Leave the bowl in a warm place for about 1 hour or until the
dough has doubled in size.
4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, flatten out with the
palms of your hands and scatter over the dried fruit and chocolate
chips. Fold and knead the dough until the fruit and chocolate chips are
incorporated. Divide and shape the dough into 12 even-sized buns and
place on a large greased baking sheet.
5. Cover loosely with oiled cling film and leave in a warm place until the
buns have risen by at least half again and are almost touching each other
- this will take about 45-60 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C, 180C fan,
Gas Mark 6.
6. Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until risen and
golden brown. Leave on the baking sheet for 5 minutes then transfer to
a cooling rack. Brush with the warmed golden syrup whilst the buns are
still warm.
7. When the buns are cold, spoon the melted chocolate into a small
disposable piping bag, snip off the end and pipe a cross on each bun.
Leave until set then serve.
TIP
These buns are best eaten on day they’re made, but if you have some
left over the next day simply split and toast and serve with butter or
chocolate spread.
manner of sporting injuries but also help people to optimise their physical potential to improve
performance and reduce the risk of injury through our Fit to Compete service.
Fit to Compete is run by our Chartered Sports Physiotherapist, Ben Austen, who is also a qualified
massage therapist and strength and conditioning specialist.
Ben previously worked for Crystal Palace Football Club and is currently undertaking the FIFA
Medical Diploma. He was also recently appointed Head Physiotherapist for Surrey Senior
Women’s Cricket Club. So who better to work with you on all matters fitness related?
How does it work?
Ben has a special interest and experience in optimising physical conditioning and long term
athlete development. As part of the Fit to Compete programme, he will:
• Take a clinical and training history
• Perform a physical assessment
• Work with you to set goals
• Devise a bespoke programme for you
• Undertake regular reviews to keep your training on track, making alterations
based on your specific needs
Ben said: “Injury prevention is proven to be performance enhancing and our Fit to Compete
service is about optimising your potential to perform. It’s suitable for everyone – whether you’re
simply running for fun, playing competitive sport at the weekend or training five times a week –
and it will help you to optimise your training as well as address any niggles or twinges you may be
having in your sport or activity.”
At Surrey Physiotherapy we also offer treatment of sports injuries
from the acute stage through to the final rehabilitation. And we have
experience in treating all levels of athletes ranging from elite through
to club and recreational players. We use a variety of treatment
methods to optimise our clients’ recovery, including mobilisation,
massage and progressive strength and conditioning programming.
Lucy, a Marathon Runner said: “I came to Ben with a painful runner’s knee which was stopping me
from running with ease. He conducted a thorough assessment and devised a treatment program
for me. A few weeks on, I am now able to run without worrying about my knee. I’m so pleased I
made that appointment.”
Ben has a special interest in injuries of the ankle, knee and hip in both adults and children. But his
expertise also extends to the treatment and rehabilitation of spinal pain and shoulder issues
– particularly as a result of his work with the cricket club.
Outside his clinic work, Ben supports the Surrey Physiotherapy sponsored
Kinetic Foundation’s football and education program and the Falls Prevention
class for older adults.
If you would like to book an initial consultation and/or programme then
Don’t Be An April Fool
Keep your stuff safe with PC protection
Connecting an unprotected
PC to the internet is rather
like stripping naked, covering
yourself in honey and throwing
yourself into a nest of angry
wasps: the question isn’t
whether you’re going to get
stung, it’s how bad the results
are going to be. The internet
is full of unpleasantness, and
some of it is trying to make you
an April fool.
Trying to con people on the
internet is very cheap and
safe: the likelihood of getting
caught is incredibly small, and
the cost of contacting even
millions of people is incredibly
small too. So entire call centres
make fake technical support
calls to unsuspecting people,
trying to convince them that
their PC is broken and they
need to download software to
fix it. That software then nabs
their personal information, or
their online banking details,
and that information is used
to compromise their various
accounts and steal their money.
It’s important to stress this:
if you’ve ever tried to call the
support lines of Microsoft,
Apple, Amazon, BT or any other
big firm, you’ll appreciate how
long it takes to get through.
These companies don’t
have the resources to make
proactive support calls, let
alone monitor your computer
for any problems.
Apps can help. A powerful but
simple password manager such
as the excellent 1Password
solves a big problem with the
internet - you need different,
strong passwords that can’t be
guessed for each individual site
or service, but you also need
to remember them. 1Password
creates and remembers them
for you, automatically filling
them in when you need them.
This means that if, say, your
favourite photo site is hacked,
your login details can’t be
used to get into your Amazon
account, eBay account or
PayPal account.
Macs don’t generally suffer
from malicious software,
but Windows PCs do: there
are more Windows users in
the world, so they’re a more
tempting target. That means
security software is essential.
BitDefender Anti-Virus Free
Edition, AVAST anti-virus and
AVG Free anti-virus can protect
your PC from malicious files and
apps, and they’re constantly
updated with details of the
latest threats. In the case of
apps such as BitDefender,
they can also scan links in your
emails to let you know whether
that email from the bank or
Apple is fake (the answer, 99
times out of a hundred, is yes).
These apps matter because
in addition to fake emails
and malicious software,
there’s a new villain in town:
ransomware. Ransomware is a
program that sneaks onto your
computer and locks you out
of it completely, meaning you
can’t access your email, your
photo library or anything else of
value on your PC. The only way
to unlock it appears to be to call
the supplied telephone number
and pay the ransom, which is
usually a few hundred pounds.
That’s a really bad idea, because
the details you use to pay the
ransom are then used again and
again until you have no money
left.
Security software such as the
apps mentioned above can
protect you from ransomware
in two ways. They can prevent
it from getting onto your PC in
the first place, and remove it
if your PC is already infected.
When you consider the cost of
the software is zero and the
likelihood of an unsecured PC
getting something nasty is 100%,
security software is a must-have
for anybody with a PC.
Health By
Hay fever or seasonal allergies
can be caused by the pollen
of numerous trees, grasses or
plants and it affects around 18
million people in the UK.
DIAGNOSIS
If you’re unsure it’s hay fever
causing your symptoms, see
your GP. They may refer you
for an allergen test to
determine whether you’re
allergic to pollen or other
organic material such as animal
hair or dust mites.
A skin prick test only tests for
the most common allergens,
so it may be inconclusive. Your
skin is pricked and exposed
to a tiny dose of allergen - it
should react if you’re allergic.
A blood test for the
Immunoglobulin E (IgE)
antibody, produced when you
encounter pollen, may also be
used.
Symptoms
Symptoms can range from mild
to life-impacting:
• itchy and/or runny nose
• sneezing
• irritated, itchy, watery eyes
TREATING HAY FEVER
How you treat your hay fever
will depend on the type and
severity of your symptoms.
Research by Allergy UK in 2014
showed that 62% of sufferers
found their current medication
ineffective – yet they failed
to seek better alternatives or
didn’t use it properly (only 14%
of steroid nasal spray users
Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk
Wheezes and Sneezes: How to Tackle Hay Fever
were using them correctly in
the study).
Ask a pharmacist for advice
on the right medication and
alternatives if it’s ineffective.
Ensure you follow doctor’s,
pharmacist’s and
manufacturer’s instructions
carefully. See your GP if over
the counter treatments aren’t
working, or you develop sinus
or ear infections.
Oral Medications (Tablets and
Liquids)
Antihistamines block the
action of histamine, a chemical
triggered by allergen exposure,
to reduce or stop your allergic
reaction. They may not relieve
a blocked nose but are usually
effective against other
symptoms.
As a preventative, they work
best if taken regularly and
started in advance of high
pollen count periods. They can
also be taken as required when
symptoms begin.
Some older antihistamines
(e.g. chlorpheniramine, known
as Piriton) make you drowsy
and can affect your ability to
do your job or drive.
However, most people now
choose newer, non-sedating
antihistamines
(e.g. Loratadine).
Steroids are only usually used
short-term if other medications
aren’t working or if your hay
fever causes or aggravates
asthma.
They reduce symptoms by
reducing inflammation.
Nasal Sprays and Drops
Decongestant nasal sprays
unblock your nose but can
cause rebound congestion
after a few days, so only use
them for occasional relief or
as an additional treatment
40 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
on days when symptoms are
severe.
Steroid nasal sprays or drops
prevent and reduce inflammation
in the nasal lining and can
help relieve eye itchiness too.
Antihistamine nasal sprays
relieve an itchy nose and reduce
sneezing.
Eyedrops
Antihistamine eyedrops reduce
itchiness and watering.
Inhalers and Injections
If seasonal allergies cause or
exacerbate asthma, you may
be offered a steroid inhaler
and/or a ‘reliever’, such as
salbutamol (‘Ventolin’).
Injectable medications may
sometimes be recommended
if steroids aren’t adequate.
Monoclonal antibody
treatments (‘mabs’) such as
Xolair block a substance
involved in allergic reactions.
Immunotherapy
If your symptoms are
persistent or severe, your
doctor may suggest
immunotherapy to progressively
build allergen immunity.
A specialist will gradually
introduce your body to small
amounts of allergen by
injection or a sublingual tablet
and monitor your reaction.
Treatment is started three
months before your trigger
pollen season.
PREVENTION
Reduce pollen contact by
avoiding drying washing
outside, showering before bed
and closing windows. You can
check the Met Office pollen
forecast at www.metoffice.gov.
uk/health/public/pollen-forecast
Blooming Hollyhock Flower
Flower
Power
by Pippa Greenwood
You can grow a huge range of
flowers from seed at home.
It’s amazingly inexpensive and
surprisingly easy too. If you’re
after some long-term residents for
your flower borders then rather
than paying several pounds for
each and every plant you buy, why
not be a bit more adventurous
and grow your own from seed?
Just about every perennial flower -
that’s those that last for years and
don’t have to be replaced on an
annual basis - is available to grow
from seed, and although you’ll
have to wait until the plants have
put on plenty of growth before
they start to perform, once they
have reached flowering size, they’ll
just keep on and on performing!
There are lots to choose from,
including lupins, silene, Echinaceae,
geranium, perennial poppies,
delphiniums, gaillardia, hollyhocks,
rudbeckia and salvia. Pay a visit to
your local garden centre or study
the pages of some seed catalogues
and start plotting and planning
what you’d like; you could save
yourself a fortune, and all from a
packet or two of seed.
To get started, all you need are
some containers into which you
can sow the seed – I like to use
half-sized seed trays, RootTrainers
or smaller individual cells. You
will also need some good quality
compost and your chosen seeds.
The job will be all the easier and
better if you have something to
tamp down the compost too, plus
labels, a permanent marker, a
dibber and some vermiculite (for
covering seeds that need some
light to germinate well).
Compost often has a fair number
of lumps in it, so sieving it through
a compost sieve (which has much
larger holes than a kitchen sieve)
will allow you to remove the
larger lumps, leaving fine compost
perfect for seed sowing. If you
sieve it straight into the pots, cells
or trays, make sure you collect up
any that falls on the surface below.
Once the compost is in the tray or
pot, firm it down so that there are
no large gaps beneath the surface,
as you don’t want subsidence
later on. Levelling it off will make
it easier to ensure the seeds are
all sown evenly and at the same
depth. You can make your own
tamper using a piece of wood with
a small block of wood nailed to it
to make a ‘handle’.
When it comes to sowing the
seed, it is worth remembering
that it is easier to look after the
seedlings later on if the seed has
been sown in rows, rather than
randomly scattered. Straight rows
are easily made using a plastic
plant label. Check the seed packets
for the precise depths at which
the seed needs to be sown as this
will differ from variety to variety.
If you are sowing seeds in small
cells then it is easier to make the
holes using a dibber. If you don’t
have one, a pencil works perfectly
well! RootTrainers are particularly
useful for larger seeds such as
sunflowers. Sowing the seed
thinly along the drills in a seed tray
makes life easier later on. Sown
too densely, the seedlings that
emerge will need more thinning
out, and will be more likely to
become drawn, leggy and weak,
whereas given a bit more space
they tend to be a lot sturdier. Once
in place, just cover the seed with
compost.
48 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
If you are sowing larger seed
into cells, just pop the seeds in
to the prepared holes and cover
to the required depth. The ideal
sowing depth will be stated on the
seed packet – it is not too exact
a science, but it is best to get it
about right!
When all the seeds are sown,
use a watering can with the rose
attached to water the compost
thoroughly. If the seed sown was
quite small then it is best to water
the compost by standing the tray
in a shallow tray or bowl of water,
and allow the compost to absorb
the water from below – this way
the seeds are less likely to be
displaced.
Finally, don’t forget to label your
seed trays clearly, ideally with a
permanent marker. You may think
you’ll remember what is in each
tray, but seedlings don’t always
resemble the full-grown plants
that closely. Many perennials need
heat for the seed to germinate
reliably. Put the trays, pots or cells
into a propagator, standing each
on moist capillary matting. Once
the seedlings appear, gradually
lower the temperature and then
prick each one out into its own
pot. Allow them to grow on,
keeping them fed and watered as
necessary. In just a few weeks or
months you can have some great
plants ready for the garden.
‘The first victim…
…of war is truth’ is a quote that goes back
to the playwright Aeschylus, who lived some 500
years before the birth of Christ. And he was no
ivory tower-living member of the Ancient Greek
literati but a one-time serving soldier who fought
alongside his brother against the invading Persian
army at the battle of Marathon (yes, the battle
after which the modern day race is named).
So he probably knew a thing or two. And over the
intervening two and half thousand years, he’s not
been proved wrong. Most wars have founded on
lies, ‘economies of truth’ or at the very least,
widely differing interpretations of given facts.
You need a good reason to go to war. The cost is
extortionate both in financial and human terms.
No-one has ever woken up on a dull Sunday
morning, scratched their backside and thought
‘You know, I’m bored. There’s nothing on the telly.
Let’s declare war on the folks next door’ and had
everyone just go along with it as if it was an
invitation to nip down the pub.
The basest power grab for a throne or territory
was normally dressed in robes of righteous
indignation in order to justify the oncoming storm
of death and destruction.
In England in 1066, William of Normandy invaded
claiming that Harold Godwinson, who had
succeeded Edward the Confessor as King,
had broken his word. Supposedly Harold had
promised to support William in his claim to the
English throne. Trouble is, at that point Kings of
England were chosen by an assembly of King’s
councillors called the Witanagemot, who chose
who they thought was the best man for the job
(accidents of birth and heredity didn’t factor then)
so even if Harold had made such an unlikely
promise, it wouldn’t have mattered.
The choice of the assembly was Harold. And from
an Anglo-Saxon perspective that was it, job done,
legally and above board. But fired up on ‘betrayal’,
William, also known as ‘The Bastard’, gathered up
his troops and headed across the Channel. Just to
make sure his forces didn’t have any last minute
changes of heart, he burned their boats too. And
here we are in a post-Norman world.
By the 20th Century things had evolved. The
mechanism of justification became more devious.
Propaganda, the ‘spinning’ of news, the evolution
of spurious stories portrayed as truth became
easier as methods of mass communication
appeared and grew. Newspapers (the first British
national daily paper was actually the Daily
Courant, which hit the streets in 1705), radio and
subsequently television provided the state with a
swift channel straight to almost every home. In the
run up to, and during, the First World War, French
and British papers carried tales of horrific atrocities
committed by German troops. All untrue, designed
to make out the enemy as monsters, dehumanising
them and making them easier to kill. During the
1930’s, Nazi propaganda cultivated the myth of the
Aryan dream, a nobility of the German race built
on Teutonic legend that the Nazis would restore.
And simultaneously, created a scapegoat for the
impoverished position Germany found itself in.
Deceitful, scheming, money-worshipping Jews
were responsible for all the country’s ills. Again,
none of it true. But all accepted by people who
were being told what they wanted to hear.
And now today we have social media. Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram. All accessible via smartphone,
laptop, tablet and PC. Anybody with an account
can put their version of the world out there for
everyone to see and react to. And what versions
they are. Selective technology software also means
you can avoid hearing anything that contradicts
your opinion. As a result you can end up living
in an information ghetto, wilfully or not, blind or
blinkered to opposing thoughts. Hearing just what
you want to hear.
Kellyanne Conway, a leading counsellor for the
current President of the United States, coined the
term recently ‘alternative facts’ when confronted
by some uncomfortable truths that didn’t fit with
her world view. There weren’t of course
‘alternative facts’. In the matter being discussed
she was simply wrong. She was either given
incorrect information, or, more likely, lying. Her
boss has an even looser grasp on the concepts of
fact and fiction, truth and lies. And he’s spent the
last couple of years telling the American people
that he will restore their pride, give them back the
American dream and at the same time vilifying
anyone who believes in Islam.
With a $54billion increase in ‘defence’ spending
applied for this year, when the US already have
the most powerful armed force in the world, one
can only look on in trepidation as we see so many
historic patterns being repeated.
If truth has already become a victim, as it surely
has, is a war already being fought or is it yet to
come…?
Time For Tea By Catherine Rose
Tea has been enjoyed all
over the world for more
than a millennium but the English
only adopted it as their
own around four hundred
years ago.
Believed to have originated in
Southern China, tea drinking dates
back to around 3000 BC.
However, it didn’t become
popular in England until the
17th century, when it was made
fashionable by King Charles II and
his Portuguese wife Catherine de
Braganza, who brought it over to
the Royal court from her native
country.
Coffee houses had recently been
established in London and were
popular haunts of middle class
gentlemen who went there to
relax or conduct business. The
custom of tea drinking was quickly
introduced. Samuel Pepys referred
to it in his diary of 1660: ‘…
I did send for a cup of tee (a China
drink) of which I never had drank
before’.
Tea would be brewed in the coffee
houses early in the morning and
kept in barrels.
Cups of it would then be re-heated
and served over the course of the
day. The coffee houses also sold
loose leaf tea so that women,
who did not frequent them, could
enjoy it at home. It soon became
popular for wives to host tea
parties with their friends where
tea was brewed and drunk black,
often with sugar or honey added.
Tea was very much the privilege
of the wealthy. It was expensive
to import and seen as a valuable
commodity. It would be kept
locked inside ornate caddies.
Matching teapots, cups and
saucers were prized possessions
to be flaunted and cherished and
there were many different designs
manufactured in bone china
during this time.
The London Tea Auction was a
hub of international tea trade. It
was set up in 1706 and continued
until as late as 1998 (with a break
during the Second World War).
Because tea was so expensive,
the tea smuggling trade flourished
and it wasn’t uncommon
for tea leaves to be adulterated
with all sorts of unpleasant (and
even poisonous) substances. The
addition of milk therefore became
increasingly popular as it would
help to improve the taste of a
poor-quality tea.
In 1785, following pressure from
tea merchants who were suffering
due to the high incidence of tea
smuggling, the government, led
by Prime Minister William Pitt the
Younger, slashed the high import
tax on tea, making it much more
affordable to the masses. Thus,
tea drinking grew in popularity
amongst all classes, and it became
common for servants to be
allocated a tea allowance.
Not everyone was happy about
tea-drinking no longer being
confined to the middle and upper
classes. Following a long debate
about whether tea was bad for
the health of the working classes,
causing ‘idleness’ and ‘melancholy’
amongst other things, it was
eventually championed by
philanthropists as part of the
temperance movement, as alcohol
was viewed as the far greater evil
and working class people were
then encouraged to become
‘teetotal’.
The concept of afternoon tea is
a peculiarly English tradition that
conjures up images of bone china
cake stands, cucumber
sandwiches with the crusts cut off,
and warm scones with jam and
cream, but tea served with food
was only introduced in the mid-
19th century.
It is said to have been first
conceived in approximately 1840
by Anna Russell, the seventh
Duchess of Bedford, in order to
bridge the gap between lunch and
60 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
dinner, which in those days was
traditionally served quite late in
the evening.
The sandwich had been invented
by John Montagu, the 4th Earl
of Sandwich, around a century
earlier and the Duchess decided
that tea served with a tray of
sandwiches and some cake would
do the job nicely. Soon friends
were joining her for ‘afternoon
tea’ at her home in Woburn Abbey
and, thanks to her frequent trips
to London, the custom grew
to become a fashionable social
event amongst the upper classes,
with the addition of pastries and
scones making it quite a
substantial meal.
During the Victorian era, a wider
selection of tea began to be
imported from Sri Lanka (Ceylon)
and India. Tea rooms serving
afternoon tea grew in
popularity, especially among
women, as they were one of
the few places where a woman
could go without a chaperone.
By the early 20th century, many
establishments had expanded on
the custom of having a musician
playing in the background and
were holding tea dances in the
afternoons.
Today, tea has become an integral
part of our daily routine and could
be described as Britain’s national
drink. Although invented in
America in the early 20th century,
the tea bag didn’t become popular
in England until the 1970s, when
it revolutionised our tea drinking
habits and put fortune tellers who
read tea leaves at the bottom of a
cup into decline!
Still considered a rather genteel
English custom, sumptuous
afternoon teas are served by many
top hotels, including London’s
Claridges, the Dorchester, the Ritz
and the Savoy, as well as Harrods
and Fortnum & Mason.
With a bewildering number of
different tea blends on offer along
with a ‘tea sommelier’ to help you
choose, they are often booked up
months ahead - a testament to
tea’s enduring popularity.

Banking on the holidays
We have a slew of bank holidays to look
forward to. The Easter weekend kicking
things off and followed in hot pursuit by
the May and Spring bank holidays.
I appreciate that for some people
these days do not represent a day off but
for many it is a welcome break after the
drudgery of the wintertime.
Good Friday's symbolism is well about -
a day devoted to remembering the death
of Jesus. There is a bank holiday and
Christians all over the country join together
in public gatherings to mark the day. It is
generally a fairly serious affair -
encouraging personal reflection. This is
because the death of Jesus was only
necessary because humankind has fallen
short of God's standards and needed a
saviour.
However Easter Sunday seems a less noticeable
event. Its bank holiday
being carried forward to the Monday and
Christians tending to meet in their own
churches rather than in public. The overall
impression may well be that Good Friday
is the main event - and Easter Sunday is
somehow less important.
The death of Jesus without his miraculous
resurrection (coming back to life) is simply
a tragedy. However together they mark
the greatest victory for humankind. Easter
Sunday is hugely significant since it shows
that Jesus was not defeated at his death.
It was a calculated action of great cost to
God that ended in celebration.
Easter Sunday means that not
only is there a way out of our wrongdoing
and it's spiritual consequences but also
that we have a risen saviour. Jesus, who
has overcome death itself and offers us life.
As you tuck in to your Easter eggs and
(hopefully) enjoy a sunny weekend you
might want to take a moment to consider
the significance of the life offered to you by
the risen Jesus.
Have a great month.
Cécile Bradwell proposed the Society’s March
debate: ‘Most children stay too long at school and
too few enrol in apprenticeships’. Cécile noted
the Government aims to have 3 million people
enrolled as apprentices by the end of 2020.
Apprenticeships provide training for new and
current employees (from age 16) – for example,
City and Guilds training consists of a paid job with
a professional qualification at the end.
Apprenticeships range from business
administration, law, retail and commercial,
engineering and manufacturing as well as health,
public services and care. Cécile then examined our
current education and training systems, starting
with 1. School: There is still too much academic
rather than vocational bias. Cécile said that
teachers often find it difficult to maintain
discipline, as children struggle with too much
deskwork. A shorter, more concrete, grounding in
maths, English and science would provide
businesses with more literate and numerate
employees. From School Year 10 (aged 14)
business studies, information technology,
economics should give young people an
introduction to the commercial world; local
businesses should help to extend the current 2 to
4 weeks’ Work Experience for Year 10-11 pupils.
Schools’ ill-informed and patchy career advice
should be boosted by a UCAS-style system to
promote apprenticeships.
2. University: Recent Government policy
encouraged children to stay on at school till aged
18 and then attend university/college. The swing
to the ‘freedom’ of higher education leads to a
high university drop-out rate. Many teenagers are
discouraged by college fees that leave them with
huge debts – with no guarantee of a prestige job.
A City and Guilds’ poll found that 59% of
vocational trainees are more likely to be employed
- against 44% of graduates.
3. Government reforms: Despite the influx of
skilled Eastern European immigrants, 87% of
senior employers from 500 UK companies said
they had recruitment difficulties. There will be
new standards, a new employers’ levy to raise a £3
million apprenticeships’ fund and the Government
has also announced that 200,000 public sector
apprentices will be recruited. Cécile said that we
need skilled roofers and hair-dressers just as much
as good solicitors. The tide is turning: many
apprentices ultimately earn more than graduates
and recently, 66% of GCSE students say
apprenticeships offer greater career progression.
But only 1 in 5 say their school helps them to
pursue apprenticeship options.
Opposer Pauline Payne opened with her husband
Ian’s old school motto: ‘Enrich the time to come’ -
a noble aspiration for any child. She also said that
education should not be a means to an end, but a
means of giving children the best chances in life.
So, should we encourage less academic teenagers
to think of apprenticeships as a superior
replacement for higher education?
No, because today’s globally-competitive
workplace demands a well-educated workforce.
Also, apprenticeships no longer guarantee a safe
job, as people live for much longer and can often
change employment. Pauline cautioned against
the ‘panacea’ of apprenticeships; they vary from a
5-year, £17,000 p.a. legal training as a solicitor to a
3-month apprenticeship in a supermarket, with no
qualification and no job; moreover, there seems to
be no independent monitoring to stop employers
using apprentices as cheap and easily replaceable
labour - not surprisingly, 30% of apprentices said
they felt disillusioned and let down by
employers. Teenagers may not realise that, unlike
higher education, apprenticeships provide specific
training and while some are equivalent to degree
courses, they do not offer the versatility of good
GCSEs, A-levels or degrees that allow students a
wide choice of career, with time to decide what
that may be. ‘Earning while learning’ said Pauline,
usually amounts to little more than pin money,
but may nonetheless lure promising students
away from completing important education. We
must not think that higher education is wasted on
most of our children. This flies in the face of the
fast-growing knowledge economy in
pharmaceuticals, nuclear energy, IT, and the media
– recognised in the Government’s plans for more
formal technical college courses and the
re-introduction of Grammar Schools.
A nation’s workforce must be able to use their
heads as well as their hands. Pauline concluded
that while children need more technical colleges,
more vocational subjects, more NVQs and work
experience, they should not feel obliged to leave
to pursue more practical training. Finally, our
schools should make sure that a good all-round
education provides a firm basis to take up a
genuine apprenticeship – one that offers a proper
qualification and good prospects.
The motion was won by 7 votes to 4, with 1
abstention. Our Visitors’ Debate, postponed from
January 5th., will take place on April 5th., at the
Old Coulsdon Centre at 8 p.m., when Chris Philp
MP will propose ‘This House is optimistic about
our prospects after leaving the EU’ and Councillor
Andrew Pelling will oppose.
Motoring
New Audi Q5
By James Baggott
Replacing ultra-successful
cars is never easy for a
manufacturer. But when
the model you’re refreshing
has been at the top of the
sales charts in its class for
every single one of the years
it has been on sale, that task
becomes all the more difficult.
And that’s the challenge Audi
has faced with the Q5. The
mid-sized model has been
the brand’s best-selling SUV
since it went on sale in 2008,
finding an incredible 1.6 million
homes across the world. This
is the refreshed off-roader,
charged with continuing that
impressive feat. Built at the
manufacturer’s most advanced
‘smart factory’ in Mexico,
it’s been packed with clever
technology, features revised
engines and a fresh look that
the maker hopes will continue
to win over buyers.
But has it done enough to
steer buyers away from new
pretenders to its crown, like
the Jaguar F-Pace?
LOOKS AND IMAGE
Well, it certainly has the looks.
The new Q5 may be a little less
flashy than its Jaguar rival, but
that smart new octagonal nose,
dramatic headlights and sharp
body creases all serve to give it
fantastic presence on the road.
That’s helped by a wonderfully
squat stance and perfect
proportions. The only thing
that jars is the fake exhaust-like
trim on the rear bumper.
Inside the quality is clear.
Solid, good quality materials
are everywhere and the
leather seats, which are
standard across the range,
are comfortable and perfectly
adjustable. It’s easy to get
settled behind the wheel too,
with plenty of space around
the driver and logically placed
controls for the fabulous
multimedia system.
There’s also a three-zone
climate control system, an
optional Bang & Olufsen sound
system, and the optional
virtual cockpit, which replaces
the dials with a 12.3-inch high
resolution display which can
switch between dials or a full
screen satnav display.
SPACE AND PRACTICALITY
The new Q5 is bigger and wider
than its predecessor – but still
90kg lighter. Inside there’s
more headroom and rear kneeroom,
while boot space is up 10
litres to 550 litres with the rear
seats in place and 1,550 litres
with them down. Two adults
will sit comfortably in the back,
but a large transmission tunnel
seriously eats into rear legroom
for anything larger than a small
child in the middle seat.
Safety systems are plentiful,
though. Buyers can opt for
active lane assist, pre-sense
assistance which helps detect
if a crash is imminent and can
apply the brakes for you, and
cross-traffic assistance at the
rear that will help when pulling
out of parking spaces. In slow
moving traffic it’s even partly
autonomous, slowing down
and speeding up in jams while
keeping you in your lane.
WHAT’S UNDER THE
BONNET?
There are three engine options
to pick from – but the best
seller, and our pick of the
bunch, is the 187bhp, 400Nm,
2.0-litre TDI, which will account
for 60 per cent of sales in the
UK. This comes as standard
with a clever new Quattro
Ultra all-wheel drive system
that can switch seamlessly
between two and four-wheel
drive automatically. This makes
the car more efficient without
losing out on traction. Fuel
economy is 56.5mpg with
emissions of 132g/km. It’s the
quickest SUV in its class too,
hitting 60mph in 7.7 seconds
and going on to a top speed of
135mph.
A 2.0-litre TFSI petrol option
with 250bhp is also available.
It’s capable of returning
40.9mpg and emits 157g/km. A
feisty 3.0-litre V6 TDi completes
the line-up, producing 284bhp
and a stonking 620Nm of
torque.
BEHIND THE WHEEL
The new Q5 is quite simply
brilliant to drive. We tested
the car on a variety of terrain,
from motorways to cities and
beaches to dirt tracks; it took
them all in its stride. On the
road it’s quiet, refined and
accomplished, while in the grit
it was surefooted and secure.
The revised 2.0-litre diesel
engine is punchy enough for
a car of this size and works
brilliantly when combined with
the 7-speed S-tronic gearbox.
We did find the automatic
tripped itself up on a couple of
occasions, stuttering a little as
it looked for a gear, but overall
it’s by far and away the best
choice of transmission.
VALUE FOR MONEY
Audi has packed the Q5 with
plenty of standard goodies
including leather seats, a selfparking
system, powered boot
and a drive select system that
lets you switch between sporty
and more comfortable settings.
VERDICT
Audi has moved the game
on with its new Q5 but not
ruined a recipe that has won
it so many admirers. Stylish,
comfortable and great to drive,
it’s now packed with even more
clever technology and features.
With best in class performance
and economy, and some highly
tempting optional extras, we’d
be very surprised if any of its
rivals managed to usurp it at
the top of the sales charts any
time soon.
Hobbies: The Sky’s No Limit
For Amateur Photographers
By Kate McLelland
Ever since the BBC launched its
‘Weather Watchers’ feature in
November 2015, the work of the UK’s
amateur photographers has enjoyed
unparalleled public exposure, with
images contributed by keen volunteers
appearing on our TV screens morning,
noon and night.
According to the BBC’s Head of
Weather, Liz Howell, the goal of
Weather Watchers – launched as
part of the BBC’s flagship Make it
Digital initiative - was to create a new,
crowdsourced weather club that would
“enable people across the UK to help
tell the story of the great British weather”.
While it has definitely achieved that
aim, it has also showcased the talent
of Britain’s amateur photographers in
an unexpected way.
We’re all photographers now
Since digital cameras were first
introduced, our attitude towards photography
has changed. Taking pictures
nowadays requires little forethought
or effort – simply point and shoot and
in a few minutes your images can be
shared with a worldwide audience.
While the fluid, quick-fire nature of
this kind of photography works well
for many people, there are others who
want to take their photographic work a
step further, using different techniques
and technologies to create even better
images. If this sounds like you, you
might consider taking up photography
as a hobby.
So what’s required to turn an interest in
photography into a serious hobby?
Talent vs. technique
While there are a number of tips you
can follow to improve your photographic
skills, nothing can really teach you
how to capture a fantastic image. The
camera may provide the means to take
the shot, but the inspiration must come
from you.
You need creativity and imagination
to take great photographs. Start by
looking at the work of the world’s
See p87 for details of The Old Coulsdon Camera Club
best photographers and you’ll begin
to understand that an unforgettable
image is not just the result of an
interesting subject, great composition
and good lighting: it’s the ability to use
a visual medium to convey emotion
and meaning.
Talent is more important than technique,
although there’s certainly no
harm in providing yourself with skills
and equipment that can make it easier
to achieve those once-in-a-lifetime
shots.
Which camera?
When you start to shop for cameras,
you may be confused by terms such
as ‘SLR’ or ‘DSLR’ and ‘mirrorless
cameras’.
‘SLR’ stands for ‘single lens reflex’.
‘DSLR’ is, of course, used for a digital
single lens reflex camera. Both types
use a mirror between the lens and the
film (or digital image sensor), which
means the image you see through
the viewfinder or display screen is the
same as the one that will appear on
the final image. Mirrorless cameras
(also known as compact system
cameras) dispense with the mirror and
viewfinder in order to keep the size
and weight of the camera down. Other
benefits include quiet operation and
ease of handling.
There are many, many websites
available to guide you towards the best
purchase, including whatdigitalcamera.
com and amateurphotographer.co.uk.
If you are still finding it hard to make a
decision after your research, you could
drop into your local camera shop for
some face-to-face advice.
What subjects excite me?
Before you stock up on expensive
equipment, it may be helpful to decide
on the kind of photography that really
interests you. Wildlife shots? Portraits
of people? Urban and rural landscapes?
Macro images
Once you’ve decided, you’ll be able
to focus on the specific items of
84 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
equipment you need – for example,
would a tripod be useful for shooting
in low light without flash? Will you
need a telephoto lens for long distance
shots? How about a wide-angle lens,
for photographing a high building or an
expansive landscape?
Final finish
You may also want to think about how
your images will be used. Will you
print them as hard copies and create a
portfolio of your work, or maybe share
them online, using an image hosting
website such as Flikr?
If you decide to go digital rather than
use film, you will probably need to
download some photo editing software.
Just as a good darkroom technician
can bring out the best from a negative,
editing can make a big difference to
a digital image. Most people think of
image editing in terms of altering and
manipulating photographs, but it’s
also useful for basic tasks, such as
cropping, lightening a dark image and
correcting the colour balance.
Photo editing software can be expensive,
but don’t worry if you can’t afford
products at the top end of the market.
You can download free software such
as GIMP, Paint.NET or Photoscape
that perform most of the functions
you’ll need, without adding to your
budget
How do I learn?
There are many ways to develop the
skills you need. You could take an
adult education course, join a local
camera club, buy a ‘how to’ book or
simply look online for sites that offer
advice to beginners.
Of course, it may be some time before
you feel confident enough to share
your work with a wider audience.
Then it will be up to you whether you
become a BBC Weather Watcher, an
entrant for ‘Amateur Photographer
of the Year’ or someone who simply
loves to share their work with family
and friends.

Ian's "Hare bells" shows how a simple subject
can make a stunning image. "It was taken in
the Lake District, early one morning lying on
my stomach with a telephoto lens on my
Yashica many years ago. I used a wide
aperture to de-focus the background but
since Photoshop has come along I adjusted
the exposure, blurred the background a bit
more and sharpened up the flower. That's
about it really...less work than many of my
images undergo."
Bird’s Eye View
By John Birkett, RSPB Croydon Local Group
Change is in the air this month. The last of
our winter visitors will leave these shores for
their breeding grounds, but there may still be
a chance to catch up with the odd Redwing,
Fieldfare, Siskin or Redpoll before they go.
There is even half a chance that another flock
of Waxwings will drop into Croydon on their
way back north.
By the time you read this, the first summer
visitors should be in. Warblers such as Blackcap,
Chiffchaff and Whitethroat will be taking
up their summer quarters during the month.
Although they do not breed here, species
such as Sand Martin, Ring Ouzel and
Wheatear stop off during their migrations
to breeding sites elsewhere in the country.
The martins might be seen at one of our
water bodies such as South Norwood CP or
South Norwood Lake and the others may be
encountered on the downs or other grassy
open spaces.
And now many of our birds, both resident and
summer visitors, will be bursting into song.
Dawn and dusk are the best times to hear
them, but at this time of year the imperative
to hold territories and attract a mate is such
that they could be singing throughout the
day. You do not have to go anywhere special;
your own garden could be alive with bird
song. But to hear the Skylarks ascending you
will need to go to a piece of downland
(Riddlesdown and Farthing Downs are good).
We would always like to hear about your
sightings, so please get in touch.
Fiat 500s and Minis
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will
find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone
who asks receives, and he who seeks finds,, and
to him who knocks it will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8
(NKJV)
The Mini and Fiat 500 were both launched in the
1950s as basic transport. The Mini in 1959, and the
Fiat in 1957, were both very successful as extremely
compact but practical cars which are still sold today.
Today’s version is much improved in every area, with
7 different models in the Mini range, and 5 different
models of Fiat 500.
The iconic basic shape of both cars is still recognizable
but both have grown larger and in terms of economy,
comfort, ride and handling they are vastly improved.
Today both vehicles offer a bewildering array of models,
colours and options, making it difficult to choose
the right one for you. But is your perception of both
cars based on today’s version or a vague memory of a
drive or ownership of one of those early models?
What have cars got to do with Christianity? The basic
truths of Christianity don’t change or improve over
the years, but is your perception of them based on
dimly remembered RE lessons at school, on being
forced to go to church with your parents as a child,
or from Sunday school? Perhaps you remember God
as a distant figure with lots of rules you are supposed
to obey and found it hard to understand what it all
meant to you? Were you turned off by your past
experience and found Christianity, maybe even
Christians, as rather boring?
But just as the economy, comfort, realiability and
performance of motor cars has made great strides
over the past 50 plus years, maybe you have too.
What God wants with every human being is a
relationship based on love, not blind obedience to a
set of rules. He already knows you, but do you know
him? Perhaps the ‘you’ of today may be open to a
relationship in a way that you were not in the past.
Why not ask God to reveal himself to you? Why not
look again at Christianity as a mature individual rather
than as a child? Why not update your understanding
of what it means to be a Christian today? With Easter
coming, why not try a local church to find out more?
Prayer: Gracious, loving Father, for each of us there
is a right time to respond to your love and concern
for us. Open the hearts and minds of those who are
ready to respond. In Jesus name we pray.
Amen.
