Model shown is C-HR Dynamic 5 door Coupe FWD Hybrid 1.8 VVT-i Auto. Official fuel consumption figures in mpg (1/100km): 55.0 (5.1)
– 57.6 (4.9). Combined CO2 86 g/km. Figures are provided for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption and CO2 figures
with other cars tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results. Fuel consumption and
CO2 produced varies significantly depending on a number of factors, including the accessories fitted (post-registration), driving style,
conditions, speed and vehicle load. All models and grades are certified according to the World Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure
(WLTP), which replaces the New European Driving Cycle test procedure (NEDC). All CO2 figures quoted are NEDC equivalent. This
means the CO2 figures are based on the new WLTP test procedure but calculated (using a standard European calculation method) to
allow comparison with the NEDC test procedure and will be used to calculate vehicle tax on first registration. All mpg figures quoted are
full WLTP figures. More information can be found by visiting: www.vehicle-certification-agency.gov.uk/fcb/wltp.asp
R e s p e c t y o u r E l d e r s
If you have any large or established trees in your
life, look on them as your greatest friends and
love and nurture them whenever you can. So says
Lucy Farndon, local tree enthusiast.
At the start of 2019 STAG (the Sheffield Tree
Action Group formed in 2015 to fight mass felling
of Sheffield's street trees) won a reprieve for
the 70% of trees left standing in their city, an
important court case victory that highlighted the
importance of mature trees not just in Sheffield,
but in cities everywhere. It could be that London,
particularly our corner of it, should now step
up its game in protecting the nation’s greenest
assets.
On a recent Thameslink train journey from East
Croydon to central London I was disturbed to
note that at any one point in the journey I could
count the healthy tree canopies visible on a single
hand. Not only does this spell disaster for the
birds, bees, bugs and butterflies of the capital but
for the people living there too. London’s horribly
toxic air needs all the natural filtration it can get.
Add this shrinking tree stock to the disturbing
amount of tree felling that seems to be taking
place for housing development, as part of
national rail’s campaign to clear the green paths
that line their tracks and by individual householders
striving for an ever more clean-cut and clinical
appearance to their properties, and the quality
and quantity of trees around London seems to be
under a sustained attack.
I am a South London/Surrey girl and for many
decades took for granted the bounty of mature
trees around me. But now I realise that the larger
part of this green treasure was not the fine
specimens of parks and public spaces but the
street and garden trees forming groves, avenues
and glades and softening boundary lines everywhere
and it is these trees that are disappearing
and/or deteriorating at a rapid rate.
Here are just some of the assaults I
have witnessed right on my doorstep: the
dismembering of mature trees of every one of
their main branches just as the year turns from
Winter to Spring; severe pollarding of avenues of
trees at the height of Summer, obliterating every
bit of blessed green shade instantly depriving
both residents and wildlife of any sanctuary from
the hot sunshine; mass clearance of building
plots, not just of trees but even the soil,
presenting architects and builders with a
simplistic and literal blank sheet while taking
from that land every established bit of flora and
fauna to the nth degree.
Recent studies have confirmed that trees do more
than provide shade and beauty to our parks and
gardens. They clean and cool the air, naturally
reducing ground temperatures and catching
pollutants in the tiny pockets of their leaves.
While a tunnel of trees can trap and concentrate
polluted roads, ‘tredges’ , tall mixed hedges of
trees can greatly mop up road pollution and stop
it spreading to the surrounding neighbourhood.
While universities study the efficacy of various
tree types and the ways in which they can most
usefully help us to clean up our environment, it
does not take science to know that trees are our
friends and allies and if there is to be any hope for
any of us, there must be hope for the trees.
If you have a tree near you, please love it and look
after it. Lucy Farndon, Coulsdon Resident
Great Outdoors
Technology for long summer nights
The combination
of long nights and
nice weather means
it’s time to head
outdoors – and
technology can help
make the outdoors
even greater and
the light nights even
brighter.
Thanks to Bluetooth
speakers, your
music can go
outside with you,
but it’s wise to get a
waterproof one just
in case. We really
like Denon’s DSB-
250BT, which has
really high-quality
music streaming
and great sound.
It’s pricier than some rival devices at around
£129, but it looks good indoors as well as out.
For something a bit more portable to take to
the beach or hotel pool, the UE Wonderboom
goes for around £55 and includes something
most Bluetooth speakers don’t: an inflatable
ring so you can listen to it in the water.
Another great gadget for outdoor
entertaining is the solar LED light. LEDs use
tiny amounts of energy so it doesn’t take
much sunlight to give them enough charge
for hours of illumination. We’d recommend
looking for warm white LEDs, which have a
more yellow cast than the traditional blue
ones: the light is warmer-looking and closer
to incandescent bulbs, whereas bright white
ones look a bit like car headlights. Expect to
pay around £2 for a single LED post, rising to
around £20 for a nice string of lights and £30
for a solar lamppost.
If you’d rather have something brighter
and more flexible, Philips has added garden
lighting to its iPhone/Android-controlled Hue
system, which also works with smart home
devices such as Amazon Echo. The lights
enable you to create ‘recipes’ for different
effects as well as
control each light
individually, and
while they’re still
quite expensive
– a coloured wall
light is currently
£100 on Amazon
– they’re very well
made and work
brilliantly.
In the UK no matter
how nice the day,
the nights can get
cold very quickly. If
you’re considering
garden heating,
don’t go for a gas
heater: they’re
incredibly wasteful
because they heat
the air around
them whether there are people there or not.
It’s a much better idea to get an infra-red
heater, which costs a lot less to run. Expect
to pay around £70 for a wall-mounted model
and around £120 for a tabletop model such
as Charles Bentley’s 2000W electric outdoor
patio heater.
If you’re heating food rather than people,
technology can even help with the humble
barbecue: clip-on LED lights enable you
to cook in the dark, while Bluetooth
thermometers enable you to check on the
food temperature without opening the lid and
letting heat escape. You can get a no-name
version for around £20, but if brand names are
important then Weber’s basic iGrill is currently
£56. The all-singing, all-dancing iGrill 3 has two
probes instead of one, enabling you to check
on two things at once, and retails at just under
£100.
Images: left clockwise - Argos LED solar lamppost, Denon
bluetooth speaker, Charles Bentley tabletop heater,
Tales from Britain’s
food war’ zones
Many Brits – perhaps hoping
for a repeat of last summer’s
heatwave – have decided
against travelling abroad this
year.
Of course, it’s great news
for our home-grown tourist
industry, and if you’re planning
to take your annual holiday in
Britain this summer, you might
be looking forward to the
opportunity to sample local
brews, cheeses, cakes and
puddings on your trip.
Locally sourced foods are
very much in vogue at the
moment, but before you tuck
in to all that delicious produce
you should be aware of the
strong emotions a well-loved
local dish can inspire. Say the
wrong thing about a regional
speciality in some parts of
the UK and you could end up
starting a riot.
Cream tea and pasty wars
As you enjoy the gentle, rolling
hills and gorgeous coastal
scenery of the West Country,
you’d be forgiven for thinking
this was a place of harmony
and contentment. While it’s
true that the people of Devon
and Cornwall are generally a
peaceable lot, you could find
some serious anger issues
lurking behind those pictureperfect
thatched cottages and
sun-bleached beach huts.
In 2018, the National
Trust was accused of
cultural vandalism
Believe it or not, one of the
main causes of strife between
Devon and Cornwall is the
innocent cream tea: that
heavenly mixture of freshlybaked
scone, home-made jam
and clotted cream particularly
loved by tourists. Ask a native
Devonian to eat a cream tea
and she or he will split the
scone, pile clotted cream onto
each half then add a dollop of
jam on top of the cream. Serve
someone from Cornwall the
same teatime treat and they
will split the scone, spoon on
some jam and finally spread
the cream on top of the jam.
Residents of both counties
insist that their version
is right and are may be
offended by any suggestion
that the method practised
by the neighbouring county
is somehow better. Last
year a National Trust poster
designed to attract Mother’s
Day visitors to Lanhydrock
House in Cornwall caused
outrage amongst locals
(including accusations of
“cultural vandalism”) when it
used a photo of a cream tea
with the jam on top of the
cream. In response, locals
threatened to boycott the
National Trust property, while
one indignant Facebook
member commented: “There
are some things you don’t do
National Trust, and putting
a picture of a DEVON cream
tea for a CORNISH cream tea
event is disgusting.”
Even the humble Cornish
pasty has caused its fair share
of discord, as historians have
suggested that the snack
was actually invented in
Devon. Their claim rests on a
document dating back to the
early 16th century, which lists
a cook’s wages for baking
pasties served at a civic event
in Plymouth. More recently
food historian Peter Brears
has suggested that the pasty
known today as a ‘traditional’
Cornish pasty was actually
invented in London. Brears
claims that the capital’s 19th
century bakers re-imagined
the recipe to produce “an
economical savoury nibble
for polite middle-class
Victorians.” This was achieved
by shrinking down the huge,
vegetarian pasties enjoyed by
Cornish miners to bite-sized
portions, filled with meat and
potato.
Shape-shifting sausages
Ask any traditionally-minded
Scot what shape a sausage
should be, and the answer
is likely to be “square”. The
‘Lorne sausage’, ‘slice’ or
‘square sausage’ is a tasty
mixture of minced meat, rusk
and spices, served as part of a
traditional Scottish breakfast.
The ongoing culinary debate
in Scotland is not, as you
might expect, about whether
a sausage should be square
or cylindrical, it’s about what
it should be called. In 2016 a
Scot called Andy O’Donnell
went so far as to create a
Facebook page dedicated to
the name ‘slice’ (to describe
the square sausage). The page
now boasts 188 members who
regularly post photos and
tongue-in-cheek comments
about the appropriate name
for their favourite breakfast
ingredient.
Whose tart is it anyway?
Visit any self-respecting bakery
or tearoom in the pretty town
of Bakewell in Derbyshire and
you’re certain to be offered the
sweet treat that is Bakewell
Tart. This confection of jam,
frangipane and flaked almonds
inside a shortcrust pastry
shell is a variant of the town’s
famous dessert, the Bakewell
Pudding.
Bakewell’s residents may be
proud of their local speciality,
but there is no evidence
to suggest that the recipe
actually originated in the town.
To make matters worse, a rival
tart was discovered in 2013,
when Gloucestershire’s council
leader Paul James came across
an old recipe for ‘Gloucester
Tart’ – with almost identical
ingredients – in a local history
book. The discovery prompted
Gloucester’s local media to
gleefully exclaim: “Gloucester
Tart revived – and it’s better
than the Bakewell!”
So before you set off on your
summer break, you might be
advised to brush up on your
diplomatic skills, but get ready
to run if you inadvertently mix
up your tarts, call a ‘slice’ a
‘Lorne sausage’ or – heaven
forbid – spread your scone the
wrong way. To be on the safe
side, maybe you should pack
some protective armour along
with the suntan lotion and flip
flops…
Vegetable and Chilli
Noodle Bowls
This is a quick vegetarian
supper packed with
flavour! Soba noodles are
Oriental noodles made
from buckwheat flour.
You’ll find them in most
large supermarkets but if
unavailable, use egg or
rice noodles instead.
Ingredients
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
2 tsp grated root ginger
1 red chilli pepper, deseeded
and finely chopped
2 carrots, peeled and diced
½ aubergine, diced
1 small courgette, diced
1 red pepper, deseeded and
diced
1 yellow pepper, deseeded
and diced
300ml hot vegetable stock
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp sesame oil
250g pack soba noodles
1-2 tsp sesame seeds
Coriander sprigs, to garnish
Ready in: 30 minutes | Serves 4
Heat the vegetable oil in a large deep frying pan over a
medium-high heat. Add the onion, garlic, ginger and chilli
and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until tender and fragrant.
Add the carrots, aubergine, courgette and peppers and fry
over a medium heat for 4-5 minutes, stirring frequently. Pour
in the stock and simmer for a further 3-4 minutes until the
vegetables are just tender.
Meanwhile, cook the noodles according to the pack
instructions. Drain well and toss into the vegetables along
with the soy sauce and sesame oil. Divide between four
warmed bowls and served sprinkled with sesame seeds and
garnished with coriander sprigs.
TIP
For a more substantial supper top the bowls of vegetables and noodles with slices of
grilled or pan-fried firm tofu, or add some stir-fried prawns.
Clean Air Day, an annual event
coordinated by Global Action
Plan, takes place on Thursday
20th June. The campaign’s
message for this year is that we
all need to work together to
reduce pollution, and that small
steps make a difference.
“Air pollution affects you from
your first breath to your last,
as the damage to our health
can start when we’re a baby
and carry on through into old
age,” says this year’s mission
statement – although experts
now know pollution can damage
our children’s health before their
first breath.
In the UK, 40,000 deaths a year
are attributed to outdoor air
pollution, and the illnesses it
causes costs around £20 billion
every year. There are also more
deaths and costs attributed to
indoor pollutants like badlyventilated
open fires and stoves,
radon and second-hand cigarette
smoke.
The health effects of pollution:
On adults
• Air pollution causes coughs
and increased phlegm and
increases your risk of getting
lung cancer, contributing to
around 1 in 13 cases. It also
reduces lung function, which
in turn increases risk for
Clean Air Day
COPD (chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease).
• Long-term exposure to
pollution is linked to a number
of cardiovascular diseases,
such as coronary heart
disease and furring of the
arteries. It increases the risk
of death from cardiac and
respiratory causes, especially
among people with preexisting
cardiac or respiratory
conditions.
Air pollution can
affect lung function
and development in
unborn babies.
• Researchers found that people
living in areas experiencing
levels of nitrogen dioxide
pollution in the top 20% were
40% more likely to have been
diagnosed with dementia than
those in areas with levels in
the lowest 20%. They seem
to be at increased risk of
‘silent stroke’ – small areas
of damage caused by lack of
oxygen to the brain tissue, but
not severe enough to cause
obvious symptoms. These
silent strokes may be a sign of
blood vessel disease, linked
to increased risk of vascular
dementia.
Whilst more specific research
needs to be done, experts
inside and outside the NHS
acknowledge an association
between pollution and the
neurological changes and
decline linked to dementia.
• Pollution increases the risk
of bladder cancer and Type 2
diabetes.
On children
The effects of pollution on
children are more serious,
because their organs and
immune system are still
developing. This, and their
smaller mass, makes them
particularly vulnerable.
• Air pollution can damage
your baby in the womb,
affecting their lung function
and development. High air
pollution is linked to low birth
weight and premature births.
• Exposure to air pollution
can cause more coughs and
bronchitis, and also increases
your child’s risk of getting
bacterial pneumonia.
• Pollution may play a part
in causing asthma in some
children and evidence
shows it can worsen asthma
symptoms. Long-term effects,
severity and mortality rates
increase with the length of
exposure and higher pollution
levels.
Reducing pollution indoors
• Open your window when
cleaning, cooking, burning
candles or decorating.
• Only burn smokeless fuels
or dry, well-seasoned wood
on your barbecue or stove.
The smoke from wood is
carcinogenic (cancer-causing).
Make sure chimneys and flues
are clean and ventilate rooms.
Buy a Defra-approved stove,
use authorised fuel, and only
light it when really necessary.
44 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!

• Have your gas boiler serviced
regularly and any suspected
gas leaks or faults in appliances
or pipes checked urgently.
• Use fragrance-free or naturallyscented
products, switch to
milder or eco-friendly cleaning
products and avoid aerosols.
• Don’t smoke indoors, even
when alone. Third-hand smoke
is a problem too.
Reducing and avoiding pollution
outdoors
• Walk, cycle and take public
transport when you can. It’s
better for the environment
and you – car drivers can be
exposed to twice as much air
pollution as pedestrians and
nine times more than a cyclist.
If walking, cycling or public
transport aren’t options for
your commute, consider carsharing
or days working from
home, if possible.
• Turn off your car’s engine
when stationary e.g. waiting
at a rail crossing, and if you’re
stuck in traffic, turn on the air
conditioning to reduce the
pollution entering your car.
Use it sparingly though, as the
resulting carbon dioxide buildup
can cause drowsiness.
• Keeping car tyres inflated,
driving efficiently and having
your car serviced regularly can
all help save fuel and reduce
pollution, as can choosing a
hybrid or electric car.
• Use quieter backstreets and
footpaths or cycle paths as
much as you can when out
and about. Using quieter
streets can reduce exposure to
pollution by 20%.
• If you have children, consider
walking bus or car share
schemes to eliminate the
problem of children dropped
off at school by car because
parents are on their way to
work.
• Delivery vans increase
congestion and pollution and
some workplaces say that
half their post is now personal
deliveries. If possible, choose
a delivery day or time when
you’re at home, have parcels
delivered to a neighbour or
specified safe place, or use a
click-and collect service in a
less-congested place.
• If your council doesn’t collect
your garden waste, compost
it or take it to a recycling plant
yourself rather than burning it.
For your sake, your children’s
sake and the environment’s sake
– clean up your act!
Strawberry & Cream Eclairs
Filled with sweetened whipped cream and fresh strawberries, these dainty pastries
make a great treat for afternoon tea or can be served as a delicious summer dessert.
Swap the strawberries for fresh raspberries or blueberries, if liked.
Ready in: 50 minutes, plus cooling | Makes 8
Ingredients
50g butter, chilled
and diced
65g plain flour,
sifted
2 medium eggs,
lightly beaten
300ml double
cream
1 tbsp icing sugar,
plus extra for
dusting
150g small
strawberries
Place the butter and 150ml cold water in a small pan and heat gently until the
butter melts. Bring the mixture to a rapid boil then quickly remove from the
heat and add all the flour. Beat thoroughly with a wooden spoon until the
mixture comes away from the sides of the pan and forms a ball. Leave to cool
for 3-4 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 220C, fan 200C, gas mark 7. Line a large baking sheet with
baking paper. Beat the eggs into the mixture, a little at a time, until smooth and
glossy. Spoon the mixture into a large piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle.
Pipe 8 x 10cm lengths, spaced well apart, onto the baking sheet.
Bake for 12-15 mins until the eclairs are well risen and golden. Remove from the
oven, pierce each eclair with the tip of a small knife and return to the oven for
2-3 minutes. This allows the steam to escape and dries out the centres of each
eclair. Transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely.
Whip the cream and icing sugar in a bowl until softly peaking. Spoon into
a large piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle. Hull and slice most of the
strawberries (reserving four for decoration).
Halve each eclair and fill with the cream then top with sliced strawberries.
Sandwich back together and dust with icing sugar. Decorate each one with a
swirl of piped cream and a reserved strawberry.
TIP
You can make and bake the choux pastry eclairs a day in advance. If the pastry goes a
little soft simply reheat in a hot oven for a few minutes until crisp.
Houseplant Heaven
Houseplants will have supplied
you with some lovely greenery
during the gloomier months, but
right now it’s time to give them
a bit of TLC as they could do with
some pampering. Quite often
houseplants get very lacklustre
and miserable over the winter
and spring, so start by checking
them over thoroughly. Remove
and dispose of any that are heavily
infested with pests or infected by
diseases. Although it is sometimes
possible to control these sorts
of problems, unless the plant is
of extreme sentimental value,
it is rarely worth all the effort –
particularly as you may still not be
completely successful. Once done,
continue as follows…
• Carefully pick over remaining
plants, removing dead, damaged
or discoloured leaves. If the leaf
stems are quite tough then use
a good sharp pair of scissors
for this job or invest in a pair
of special ‘snips’ or miniature
secateurs – whatever you use,
they must be really sharp.
• Houseplants usually respond
well if repotted in late spring or
very early summer, so if yours
are pot-bound do this now.
Check by carefully removing
the plant from its pot and take
a look at the root system. If it
is really quite congested in the
pot, then in most cases this
means it is time for it to move
house.
• When repotting, only move the
plants up one pot size and use
compost as similar as possible to
the compost in which they are
currently growing. If in doubt,
Plants that
have just
been potted
on will not
require
feeding for
a couple of
months
seek advice from your local
garden centre or plant compost
supplier. Most houseplants hate
poor drainage, so do make sure
that the compost is free-draining
and always add crocks at the
base of the pot. Consider adding
additional grit or perlite to
improve drainage.
• Once the plants have been
repotted, place them in a cool,
relatively stress-free environment
for a week or two and avoid
putting them in hot or direct
bright sunlight. Keep them
adequately but not over-watered
and the roots will soon start to
move into the new compost.
• Once they are happy in their new
pot, give them a bit of a bath.
Well-moistened kitchen roll or
cotton wool can be used to wipe
the leaves clean. Many of the
more glossy-leaved houseplants
respond well to an application of
leaf shine, but always check that
the plants you have will enjoy
this treatment, as some respond
badly.
• When did you last feed your
houseplants? It is easy to forget
them when you are busy thinking
about other plant-related jobs.
Houseplants do require regular
feeding, and you can buy some
really good fertilisers in garden
centres. If possible, choose
those which are formulated
specifically for the plants you
are growing or at least are sold
as being especially suitable for
foliage houseplants or flowering
houseplants. If you grow cacti
and African violets you should
be able to easily obtain specialist
56 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
fertilisers for these too. Each
individual type of feed will be
formulated to ensure that it
produces the best results in the
type of plant on which it should
be used.
• Plants that have just been
potted on will not require
feeding for a couple of months,
as the compost will contain
adequate feed materials.
Don’t forget, however, that
both recently replanted and
more established houseplants
do need regular watering,
particularly as they start to put
on more growth and if they
are in a fairly warm or sunny
position.
• Don’t place plants in too sunny
a spot. As temperatures rise
it is likely that some of them
could get too hot or suffer leaf
scorching if placed too close
to a south- or west-facing
window. If possible, move them
on to an east- or north-facing
windowsill, or at least move
them slightly further back from
the glass. Remember that most
houseplants benefit from a bit
of a summer holiday and love
to be placed in dappled shade
in the garden, where you will
find that they usually thrive
– provided you keep them
adequately fed and watered.
• Finally, why not treat yourself
to a new houseplant or two?
A visit to your local garden
centre is bound to provide you
with plenty of inspiration, but
do make sure that the plant is
well-suited to the position that
you have lined up for it – it’s
tempting to buy those that
only do well in really sunny
situations, but if you only
have a fairly shady windowsill
to offer it, then it will suffer
immensely over the winter
months – so try not to be
tempted by things that aren’t
really suitable.
The month of Wimbledon and
Father’s Day; synonymous
with freshly mown grass,
the first Pimms and a sudden
abundance of flowers,
we welcome June as the
beginning of summer.
In Anglo-Saxon times, June
was known as midsummer
month or sera monath,
meaning ‘dry month’. It also
brought with it the big pagan
celebration of the summer
solstice – the longest day
of the year in the Northern
Hemisphere.
The longest day can occur
on 20th, 21st or 22nd June,
depending on when the
sun is at its northernmost
point in the Tropic of Cancer.
However, as is the case with
this year, it most commonly
falls on the 21st. Although
they can happen, solstices on
the other two dates are rare.
For example, the last summer
solstice to occur on 22nd June
was in 1975.
June’s summer solstice is
also the time when the Arctic
Circle experiences 24 hours
Photograph Andrew Dunn,
www.andrewdunnphoto.com
Midsummer Meanings
of daylight, known as the
midnight sun. Meanwhile in
the Southern Hemisphere,
1st June is the official start
of winter and the Antarctic
Circle experiences 24 hours of
darkness.
Summer solstice is
the longest day of the
year in the Northern
Hemisphere
It was the Romans who were
responsible for giving the
sixth month in their Roman
and our Gregorian calendar
its current name. Jun(e) is
believed to be a shortened
version of Iunius or Junius
(the capital ‘J’ only came
into existence as a separate
written letter from ‘I’ during
the 14th century – before this
they were written in the same
way).
Junius is Latin for ‘sacred
to Juno’. In Roman religion
Juno was the wife of Jupiter
and patron goddess of The
Pantheon in Rome. She was
also the Roman goddess
of marriage and childbirth.
The blessing she was said to
bestow on couples who marry
during this month has meant
that June weddings remain
popular to this day.
Juno was attended by her
companion bird, a peacock,
and her messenger Iris, the
hem of whose colourful robe
would sometimes be glimpsed
in the sky as a rainbow.
In early Roman times, June had
29 days, but Emperor Julius
Caesar added an extra day,
making it 30 days long, but still
a day shorter than most of the
other months of the year.
People born in June are said to
be ruled by the planet Mercury,
which represents youth. They
come under the zodiac signs
of either vivacious, optimistic
Gemini (the twins) or loyal,
stability-loving Cancer (the
crab).
Scientific studies have claimed
that June babies tend to be
physically stronger and suffer
less with mental illnesses than
those born in any other month.
June has three birthstones: the
pearl, said to stand for faith
and purity of heart; moonstone
for intuition, balance and new
beginnings; and the more
obscure alexandrite, which is
supposed to bring health and
longevity.
The birth flowers for this
month are the sweet-smelling
rose, which in the traditional
language of flowers represents
romance and love, and the
honeysuckle, whose meaning is
fidelity and devotion.
There is a saying in folklore
that in June, summer doesn’t
begin until the elderflower is in
blossom.
As well as the summer
solstice, other festivals that
take place in June include
well-dressing, where natural
springs are honoured with
elaborate decorations that
include intricate mosaic-like
pictures made using flowers,
grasses, moss, seeds, bark
and berries. Well-dressing is
particularly popular across
Derbyshire.
The many significant historical
events that have happened
in the month of June include
the signing of the Magna
Carta on 15th June 1215, and
the original Globe Theatre
being destroyed by fire on
29th June 1613 after a cannon
was let off to announce the
arrival of the king’s entrance in
Shakespeare’s Henry VIII.
The infamous Battle of
Waterloo took place on 18th
June 1815 and just over a
decade later, 10th June 1829
saw the inaugural Oxford
versus Cambridge boat race
(Oxford won).
In June 1946, the first BBC
television licenses were
issued, costing £2. The
Queen’s coronation took place
on 2nd June 1953. It is also the
month of her official birthday
and the well-known Trooping
of the Colour ceremony.
Coincidentally, Queen Victoria,
up until recently Britain’s
longest reigning monarch, was
also crowned in June, on 28th
in 1838.
D-Day, codenamed Operation
Overlord, happened on 6th
June 1944.
The month of June has long
fascinated poets, artists and
lyricists from Shakespeare
to Rogers and Hammerstein.
‘Flaming June’ is a famous
painting by Lord Frederick
Leighton completed in 1895.
Scottish poet Robert Burns
also paid homage to the
month in the first lines of his
well-known poem ‘A Red Red
Rose’. And there is no end of
romantic ballads out there
rhyming ‘June’ with ‘moon’.
Believe it or not, June was a
popular name for both boys
and girls in the first part of
the 20th century but over the
last 40-50 years has declined
in favour in the UK. However,
June has enjoyed a resurgence
as a favourite girls’ name
in the USA during the past
decade.
On the Move
At the time of writing this I am in the eye of
the storm; I have exchanged contracts on a
sale of my house and the purchase of my
new house but completion is still a week
away. It is an exciting but unsettling time as
I pack up the last twelve years of my life and
prepare for a new adventure. Not that I am
moving far, of course! I love the area with
the amenities that its proximity to London
provides whilst enjoying the peace and
tranquillity of the surrounding countryside.
I have spent a lot of time (and,
inevitably, a fair amount of money) on my
current house, updating and improving it
and decorating it to my taste. Now I start
that journey again in a new property which
is both a wonderful challenge and also a
daunting task!
I was thinking recently how our
lives can often be like a house – there are the
parts open to anyone to see – the frontage.
There are the parts we share with our friends
– perhaps the lounge and dining room and
then there are the parts that we keep private
and share perhaps only with those closest
to us.
For years I neglected decorating
my bedroom whilst I focussed all my
attention on the common-parts of the house.
Whilst my living room was smartly decorated
my bedroom had an unpainted wall with
peeling lining-paper. Having people over and
using my home was really important to me
whereas the part of the house only I used
seemed far less significant. Looking back
(with a room I finally decorated) it maybe
said more about me than I realised.
It is all too easy to paper over the cracks
rather than to deal with underlying issues or
to focus on the outward appearance rather
than what is going on inside. Perhaps we
neglect areas of our lives because we don’t
feel we are worth the effort.
You might want to take a moment
to reflect on your ‘house’. Are you giving
attention to the parts that need it, seeking
help where appropriate?
I believe God wants to be involved in every
room – to bring about change and healing –
because He loves you and cares about all the
parts of your life, not just the parts you let
others see.
Have a great month.
Sunday 16th June 2019
The average Dad in Britain spends an average of 4 hours a day being a taxi, 27 days a
year on DIY duties, and if you were to put a price on the number of spiders cleared–
it’d be at least £10,000.
Dad’s are great for all kinds of things; opening that jar of Nutella for your morning
spread, reaching the last box of Frosties on the supermarket shelf, piggy backs when
your little legs just couldn't take it anymore, reading bed time stories, playng in the
park and so much more!
Fathers day is the day to show your appreciation for your life long heroes; no matter
what age you are or how old your precious father is!
Whether that be through gifts, cards, dinner or simply a loving hug and a cup of tea.
We’ve only got one dad so let him know he’s the best!
If money is tight, a handmade card or a surprise telephone call would mean the
world to your Dad
Major Upgrade Opportunity – Brighton Mainline
By Chris Philp
Member of Parliament for Croydon South
The Brighton Mainline, running from London to Brighton through our neighbourhood,
is one of the busiest in the country carrying over 300,000 passengers each day.
Approximately half of all delays on Brighton Main Line trains are caused by track and
infrastructure failure. This includes problems with the track bed, points and signalling
breakdowns. Although things are improving for passengers, it’s important that we take
long-term measures to prevent a repeat of the dire levels of service that we have had to
endure in the recent past.
Towards the end of 2016, when the strikes from the RMT and Aslef unions were at their worst,
I led a delegation of MPs to see the Prime Minister which led to a £300m programme of works
to upgrade the infrastructure (for example, fixing points and signals).
Work has already been underway to improve the service. The appointment of Chris Gibb to
oversee improvements led to the creation of rapid response teams, whose job it is to
proactively fix faults to the track and signal systems before they can cause disruption to
passengers.
Without this work the line would continue to degrade, and there would be an increase in
delays and unreliability in services. However, with these improvements, there will be better
performance, greater reliability in services, and fewer delays and cancellations.
But the line is nonetheless running at 99% capacity, which means any small problem creates
wider disruption and rush-hour trains are often over-crowded. It has been underfunded by
successive governments. The line was built by the Victorians and is in dire need of an upgrade.
We need to create more capacity.
The bottleneck for the whole network is around East Croydon station – Network Rail describe
it “the most challenging bottleneck on Britain’s Railway Network.” Services converge from
across Surrey, Sussex and parts of Hampshire through East Croydon, before diverging to
Victoria, London Bridge and Blackfriars. The Windmill Junction, near Selhurst, is also a
bottleneck. You will have noticed southbound trains often pause for a few minutes near
Selhurst while they wait for this junction to clear.
I have therefore been campaigning for the Government to provide around £2 billion to fix
this bottleneck. This project would entail expanding East Croydon from 6 to 8 platforms and
widening the track in the vicinity. It would also involve grade separating Windmill junction.
Not only would this prevent a lot of delays, but it would allow for more
services to run,
increasing capacity by 30%.
The funding still needs to be finally signed off, but I will be pressing hard
to make sure that this happens. This would be one be one of the biggest
rail infrastructure upgrade projects in the country.
I will keep you updated.
Seventies Chic
Get your groove on – it’s
back to the Seventies! But
this time around orange pine
and avocado bathrooms are
banned, in favour of goodlooking
furnishings, bold
patterns and cool accessories.
Seventies style is all about
attitude. Bright and bold, it’s
easy to introduce, often quite
affordable and, because the
furnishings are so striking, less
is definitely more – a handful
of well-chosen pieces can be
carefully integrated into a
modern scheme, adding an ontrend
edge without becoming
overpowering.
Start with the distinctive
Seventies colour palette – in
general colours were quite
earthy and muddy, from
mustard and ochre to camel,
olive and chocolate.
Seventies colours were quite
earthy and muddy, from
mustard and ochre to camel,
olive and chocolate
Like the patterns of the time
– geometrics such as circles
within squares, paisleys and
simple florals – these strong
shades are best employed in
Lava Lamps Edward Craven-Walker (1918-2000) was a
great British inventor, entrepreneur and eccentric. The story goes
that he was in a pub one night when he noticed a peculiar egg
timer, made from a cocktail shaker, old tins and wax, and filled with
liquid. Fascinated, he bought the contraption and decided to try to
improve on its design. It took 15 years, but in 1963 the Astro Lamp was
launched and became an instant hit, appearing in TV programmes
including The Prisoner, Doctor Who and The Avengers. Lava lamps
came in a range of designs, and were ubiquitous until the late
Seventies and Eighties; they were revived in the Nineties and have
since become popular again – a retro classic that’s perfectly suited to
a 21st century lifestyle.
small doses, mitigated by pale
or neutral backgrounds. Think
small touches such as a cushion
or two, a drum lampshade,
some glassware and ceramics
and a framed poster on your
wall, for example.
Typical of this decade is
an element of comforting
homespun, home-made style,
hence the prevalence of
handicrafts such as patchwork,
weaving and macramé. Why
not take a course, or teach
yourself from books or online
videos, and make your own,
personalised pieces? Failing
that, Etsy, Folksy and other
online marketplaces have
beautiful (and affordable) craft
pieces.
Include some wooden and,
especially, rattan furnishings
in the form of blocky furniture
made of pine or covered in
velvet or corduroy, and cane
elements such as headboards,
mirror frames and baskets.
Try car boot sales, auctions or
charity shops, though choose
better quality items to create
the right impression. A creamcoloured
shagpile rug is another
option and can be subtly
updated with a Berber-style
criss-cross pattern.
Houseplants are important,
and the bigger the better – no
Seventies home was complete
without a Swiss cheese
plant and a spider plant in a
handmade hanger. Complete
the mix with some rustic
kitchenware, a touch of vintage
Laura Ashley, and perhaps even
a beanbag or Moroccan pouffe.
Rattan Revival
Light weight yet strong and durable,
rattan is a versatile material that can
be used indoors and out for a variety
of furnishings, adding pretty natural
texture and a charmingly retro vibe.
Sit back and relax on this
iconically styled rocking
chair that’s inspired by ‘50s
and ‘60s interiors. Monet
Head right back to
headboard, £335, Out
There Interiors.
• Rattan looks right at home in the garden or on
the patio, but think out of the box and introduce
accents of rattan to indoor areas, too. A simple
basket here and there is the obvious choice, but
modern furniture designers are also incorporating
rattan into light fittings, tables, picture and mirror
frames, headboards and more, so the possibilities
are truly exciting.
• Chunky rattan has a distinctively tropical, retro look
(match with palm prints to go all out), but to keep
things modern look for more delicate pieces and
use sparingly as an accent, combined with minimal,
contemporary furnishings and on-trend accessories.
Rattan is right at home outdoors, and these
armchairs are super-comfy. Whitcombe teak
surface. Rattan webbing
screen, £275, Cox & Cox.
A dramatic shape and a pretty colour
and texture give this pendant plenty of
interest. Rattan hanging lamp, £225, Out
There Interiors.
How to Decorate With Rattan
This oval looped
mirror would make a
striking feature in a
hall, bedroom or living
room. Rattan looped
mirror, £125,
Cox & Cox.
• Go hygge with rattan. A simple room scheme with
a white or pale background and subtle mix of
textures – including, for example, rattan, stone,
wool, ceramic, sisal and wood – is timeless, calm,
and very easy to live with.
• Choose sustainable rattan. According to the WWF,
rattan is a naturally renewable palm, but the way
in which it is harvested and processed needs to
improve in order to secure the supply in the long
term. Look for rattan that has Fair Trade or Forest
Stewardship Council (FSC) certification.
Mortgages: Short-term or long-term
It’s easy to be overwhelmed by
the sheer number of mortgage
products available, and the
trend towards offering nontraditional
mortgage terms
doesn’t help when you’re
trying to decide which loan is
best.
Banks and building societies
are increasingly offering
longer-term mortgages lasting
30 or 40 years alongside the
‘standard’ 25-year term with
which many of us are familiar.
Shorter-term mortgages of 15
years or so are also available,
so what are the pros and cons
of short-term and long-term
mortgages, and which might
be better for you?
SHORT-TERM MORTGAGES
A mortgage is likely to be the
biggest financial commitment
of your life, so you need to
make sure you’ve considered
all the potential problems and
issues that might arise. The
higher monthly repayments
on a shorter-term mortgage
do expose you to a greater
risk of default, but there are
also many advantages to be
enjoyed.
Choosing a shorter-term
mortgage of 15 years or less
means you pay off the loan
much quicker than many
people do, but you also have
to consider the cost to you, not
only in direct financial terms
but also in the quality of your
life and the potential stresses
of repaying higher amounts.
Younger applicants
might be able to
obtain a 35-year
plus mortgage
Why choose a short-term
mortgage?
Short-term mortgages have
higher monthly repayments,
but you’ll pay considerably less
interest overall. If you’re able
to put down a large deposit,
you don’t need to borrow as
much money, which is just one
instance where short-term
mortgages might be a good
idea.
An additional advantage is
that, if you’ve been able to
repay your mortgage sooner
than later, the equity in your
property will also grow faster.
The initial consideration if
you’re thinking about a shortterm
mortgage, however,
is whether you can keep up
repayments over this period.
Can you afford a short-term
mortgage?
Your monthly budget will
dictate whether it’s possible
to repay your mortgage
over a shorter period of time
than the standard term, but
you need to be very careful
not to overstretch yourself
financially.
Also bear in mind the
potential interest rate rises
in the future, particularly
considering the low rates
we’ve enjoyed for more than
a decade. In other words, the
only direction interest rates
are likely to go is up.
Responsible lending practices
for mortgages
Mortgage lending practices
have been strictly controlled
since the global financial
crisis of 2007, and your ability
to repay should be carefully
scrutinised by each lender.
They’ll look at your regular
outgoings and are unlikely to
grant your application if they
feel you’re a risk of default.
If you’re tempted by a
shorter-term mortgage and
earn the income to afford
the repayments, it might also
be worthwhile considering
mortgage payment
protection insurance (MPPI)
to cover your repayments for
a fixed time if you fall ill or
lose your job.
Are there any alternatives to
a short-term mortgage?
Instead of making high
payments to your mortgage
every month, it may be
worthwhile looking into
mortgage products that allow
you to make overpayments
as and when you can afford
it. It takes off the pressure of
having to consistently meet
high repayments, and allows
a little flexibility that can
take years off your overall
mortgage term.
So although 25 years has long
been the ‘standard’ term for
a mortgage, what attracts
borrowers to extended
repayment terms of 30 or
40 years, and is it worth
considering a longer-term
mortgage?
LONG-TERM MORTGAGES
Taking out a mortgage of 35 or
40 years can seem like a huge
financial commitment at any
age, but the mortgage market
has changed over the last
decade. The stricter lending
practices we mentioned earlier
apply equally to long-term
mortgage loans, and their
suitability for each applicant
must be carefully evaluated by
lenders.
Why choose a long-term
mortgage?
You might choose a long-term
mortgage to benefit from
lower monthly payments.
Perhaps you’re more at ease
knowing you can comfortably
afford the repayments on
your biggest asset, and feel
it’s worthwhile despite the
extra interest you’ll pay over
the course of the loan term.
It’s also beneficial if you need
a high loan-to-value (LTV)
mortgage.
Another consideration with
long-term mortgages is your
age, as although long-term
mortgages are becoming more
mainstream, some lenders
still don’t offer this type of
mortgage term if it means it
will take the borrower into
their retirement years.
On the other hand, younger
applicants looking for their
first property might have
no problem in obtaining a
mortgage with a duration
of upwards of 35 years. So
what are the main benefits
and drawbacks of lengthier
mortgages?
Pros of a long-term mortgage
•Monthly repayments are
lower.
•Interest rate rises will have
less impact.
•You may be able to secure a
higher loan-to-value ratio.
Cons of a long-term mortgage
•It takes longer to repay.
•You pay more interest overall.
•You may be refused on age
grounds.
Affordability is the keyword
when thinking about
mortgages – hopefully
between you and your lender,
you’ll be able to find the right
length of mortgage term and
feel able to repay every month
without too much difficulty.
Driverless Cars Explained
Driverless cars are a hot topic
in the motoring world at the
moment. Everyone’s talking about
them; manufacturers, politicians
and transport chiefs are all
nattering on about the future of
cars without the need for drivers.
But what are they, and what
do they mean for the future of
motoring? We’re going to try and
clear things up.
The Government is predicting
that driverless cars could be in
full use on the UK’s roads by 2021,
following an announcement that
advanced trials of automated
vehicles could move forwards.
Are they safe?
The safety of autonomous vehicles
was questioned recently after
a 49-year-old woman was killed
while crossing the road in front of
a self-driving vehicle in Arizona.
The issue is the co-habitation
of road users and the driverless
vehicles – until people are sure
how to interact with them,
accidents will still happen.
Which manufacturers currently
offer some level of autonomous
assistance?
Quite a few, actually. You’ll
find some partial self-driving
technology in cars from Audi,
BMW, Citroen, DS, Fiat, Ford,
Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Land
Rover, Lexus, Mazda, Mercedes,
Nissan, Peugeot, Porsche, Renault,
Seat, Skoda, Subaru, Suzuki, Tesla,
Toyota, Vauxhall, Volkswagen
and Volvo – phew! It’s fair to say
that most cars do incorporate
the technology, but it can include
features such as adaptive cruise
control.
Levels of autonomy
You may have heard about people
discussing the various levels of
autonomous assistance, and
they’re categorised from one to
five. Here’s what they mean.
Level 1
Introduced around 1990s/00s
Level one autonomous assistance
is, as expected, the base level. It
means that just one element of
the driving process is taken over
by the car – but the driver is still
very much in charge. This level of
assistance has been around for
some time now, pioneered by early
cruise control systems.
Level 2
Present day
Level 2 autonomy represents
pretty much where we are today.
Computers are now clever enough
to deal with multiple functions,
so the car can take control of
steering, throttle and brake
functions – but it still requires
the driver to show that they’re in
charge of the car by putting a hand
on the steering wheel.
Level 3
Estimated 2020
Level 3 takes things up a notch. It
means that all of the safety-critical
functions can be controlled by the
car, but the driver must still be able
to intervene should they need to
– this isn’t completely ‘hands-off’
technology yet.
Level 4
Mid 2020s
Things are getting serious at
Level 4. This sees cars capable of
being fully autonomous, albeit in
selected areas – most likely innercity
ones.
80 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
Dedicated lane markings and
infrastructure will be required
to ensure that the cars keep on
the straight and narrow, too.
Complex mapping systems will
combine with advanced cameras,
sensors and artificial intelligence
to determine where the car needs
to go. The driver may have to
intervene at certain points, but for
the most part it’ll mean hands-free
driving.
Level 5
Late 2020s/early 2030s
Level 5 will see the vehicles
derestricted – they won’t have
to operate within certain areas
or environments. It’ll simply be
capable of driving anywhere,
without the need for a driver.
There won’t be a need for a
steering wheel or traditional
‘controls’; these vehicles will
be fully capable of operating
themselves.
It’ll free up space inside the cars
and, because of that, they’ll
probably look more like lounges
on wheels. That’s what we predict,
anyway.
Timeline predictions
It’s worth noting that this timeline
is based on predictions by many
different manufacturers. Though
various dates are pitched by
different car makers, most agree
that the bulk of progress will
happen between 2020 and 2030.
It’s a real technology race at
the moment – each company is
charging ahead to develop their
own systems quicker than the
rest. It’s why these dates are
estimations – some may get there
sooner than others.
Coulsdon Comrades Club celebrates
its Centenary 1919 to 2019
After the first World War ended in 1918 a number of non-political organisations were set up to
help servicemen returning from the war. One of these was the Comrades of the Great War.
A group of local Coulsdon people decided that there should be a social club in Coulsdon for
ex-service men. They formed the Coulsdon Branch of the Comrades of the Great War (1919)
under their president Mr Alfred Patchett;
The club opened premises just a little nearer
Lion Green Road than the present premises.
In 1922 a number of the ex-service men’s
organisations decided to merge which was the
nucleus of the British Legion. The Coulsdon
Comrades decide to remain independent and
are still so today. In 1923 the old St Andrews
Church Hall became available and they moved
there.
It was decided to demolish the old church hall and construct the present building opening in
1933. Today the club is open to membership from all, as the number of ex-service personnel
are now in a minority. We would like to wish them well with their centenary celebrations and
hope the Comrades Club remain part of Coulsdon’s fabric for the next 100 years.
More Story than History
There’s an old saying, ‘If you don’t learn from
history then you’re doomed to repeat it’.
Strangely, I don’t know the history of that
statement. So I might say it again. Hmmm.
Anyway, it’s aimed at telling people to learn
from past errors. Like not looking up while
standing on a hill near Hastings when the
Normans start firing arrows at you, or calling
your ship ‘unsinkable’ when you’ve got
Leonardo de Caprio and Kate Winslet on
board.
But you’ve got to be wary where you get
your history from. Even the most learned
and academic of tomes can be open to
accusations of bias. I’ve just finished reading
a book called ‘Arnhem’ about the failed
attempt to capture a number of Dutch bridges
in the latter parts of World War II. It’s a great
book, and I’d cheerfully recommend it to
anyone with a interest in that direction, but
for whatever reason, author Anthony Beevor
clearly doesn’t like Field Marshal Bernard
Montgomery, and can’t resist taking a pop at
him at every opportunity. And it goes beyond
simply holding him responsible for being the
architect of the failed plan.
So when you start looking at more dramatic
representations, where the intent is primarily
to entertain rather than educate, then you can
be in real trouble if you take what you see as
actual history.
It’s not new. Shakespeare’s take on history
was decidedly dodgy. Macbeth wasn’t a
dagger-wielding psychopath, but an elected
King (yep, they elected Kings in Scotland at
that time, like they did in England until William
the Conqueror turned up) who ruled wisely
and well for a number of years. Richard III
wasn’t the epitome of evil and he almost
certainly didn’t have a hump-backed
deformity. Both depictions were a result of
needing to curry favour with Queen Elizabeth.
But for serious, bona-fide, reality-warping
historical depictions, you can rarely do better
(or worse) than the movies.
If you take Hollywood as your guide, from
ancient pre-historic times to the modern day,
then the world you see will be very different
from reality.
In ‘One Million Years BC’ (1966) a fur
bikini-clad Raquel Welch screams in horror
as her caveman boyfriend fights dinosaurs,
despite the last dinosaur having died out over
sixty million years previously.
In the marketplaces of ‘Troy’ (2004) they
trade Llamas from Peru, which no-one from
Europe would be visiting for another two and
half thousand years. Mongol tribesmen,
Indian war-elephants and an armoured
rhinoceros are brought together by the
emperor Xerxes to take down the
ludicrously over-oiled Spartans led by Gerard
Butler in ‘300’ (2007). But Xerxes’ empire
never extended to either India or Mongolia
and no-one has ever armoured a rhino (well
not until ‘Black Panther’ (2018), and that’s a
comic-book movie and so doesn’t count) and
lived. Let’s be honest, would you?
Let’s catapult forward in time. Mel Gibson’s
‘The Patriot’ (2000). Set in a version of South
Carolina where slavery really wasn’t that bad
during the Wars of American Independence,
the sadistic British commander (who else)
rounds up the local crying women, doe-eyed
children, invalids etc., sticks them in a church
and burns it to the ground. An act of atrocity
that would have had a profound impact on
Anglo-American relations long after the war
had finished. If it had ever happened, which it
didn’t. Talking of which, and in a long line of
‘how the Americans won the war’
movies, we have ‘U-571’ (2000) in which Jon
Bon Jovi helps his fellow sub-mariners to
steal an Enigma code machine from a stricken
German U-Boat. Set in 1942, it’s so inaccurate
it almost defies listing. Other than the simple
fact it didn’t happen, the British had already
captured an Enigma machine back in February
1940 and deciphered the code by 1941, before
the Americans had even entered the war.
Sorry Jon, but you gave war movies a bad
name…
So, whether it’s ‘Mary Queen of Scots’,
‘Dunkirk’, ‘Darkest Hour’ or any of the recent
historical films, or ‘Gentleman Jim’ or ‘Victoria’
on the television, take it as an entertainment.
Even, if your curiosity is piqued, take it as an
opportunity to look further into the subject or
period. But never take it at face value…
Bird’s Eye View, June 2019
John Birkett, RSPB Croydon Local Group
Last month I asked people to keep their eyes
and ears open for swifts as they return to take
up their territories back in the UK.
As predicted, they started to appear at the
beginning of May and several people have
already reported sightings of swifts in the
Croydon area. Some have been reported
flying low near houses and screaming; this
suggests the birds will set up a territory
nearby. And to help swifts find somewhere to
nest, since we launched our appeal for
information, at least one household has put
up two swift nest boxes and another has
asked for details of where to get them. We
can only hope that the swifts will find (and
use) any new nest sites provided. Our swift
survey will continue through the summer so
please do email us (johnbirkett@hotmail.
co.uk) with information about when and
where you saw your swifts and what the birds
were doing.
As well as swifts, many other summer visitors
will be busy rearing families this month and
the young may turn up seemingly lost and
abandoned.
This is unlikely to be the case; they may have
left the nest, but the parents are probably
somewhere nearby and will be waiting until
you cease to be a threat before returning to
feed the fledgling. Unless the young bird is in
immediate danger, please leave it alone. And
towards the end of June you may get adult
great spotted woodpeckers bringing their
offspring to garden feeders.
To find out more about Croydon’s birds and
the group’s activities visit our website
(http://www.rspb.org.uk/groups/croydon/) or
personal views on Brexit, let me suggest that there
is one thing all Christians can be united on and join
together in, and that is praying for the government
of the day in dealing with the issues that confront
it. There is a daily prayer that is said in the House
of Commons which is a rich and a very powerful
prayer. It says:
Lord, the God of righteousness and truth, grant
to our Queen and her government, to Members
of Parliament and all in positions of responsibility,
the guidance of your Spirit. May they never lead
the nation wrongly through love of power, desire
to please, or unworthy ideals but laying aside all
private interests and prejudices keep in mind their
responsibility to seek to improve the condition of
all mankind; so may your kingdom come and your
name be hallowed. Amen.
Sadly, some have sought to stop this prayer being
said in Parliament. They may or may not be successful
in that endeavour, but it doesn’t stop Christians
joining together to pray this prayer for our nation.
Maybe the view Christians should take on Brexit
and on any issue that is debated in Parliament is to
prayerfully bring it before the throne of grace.
I’ve decided to commit to praying this prayer for
our country, why not join me?
Prayer: Lord, the God of righteousness and truth,
grant to our Queen and her government, to Members
of Parliament and all in positions of responsibility,
the guidance of your Spirit. May they never lead
the nation wrongly through love of power, desire
to please, or unworthy ideals but laying aside all
private interests and prejudices keep in mind their
responsibility to seek to improve the condition
of all mankind; so may your kingdom
come and your name be hallowed. Amen.
