The Price of Free Speech 

We live in divided times. Everyone seems to 

have an opinion, and wants to share it. Now 

that’s fine as far as it goes but when holding and 

stating a contrary opinion earns you not just 

an acknowledgement of a disagreement but 

threats and abuse, something’s gone 

horribly wrong. 

Now it’s easy to put the blame on 

social media. Facebook and their peers may 

have started out as a way of friends to exchange 

holiday photos and contact distant relatives 

without the bother of writing a letter or the 

expense of a phone call but have turned some 

people into serial arguers, a gaggle of folk who 

pick a verbal fight at the slightest excuse. 

Some have found a degree of solace, and have 

managed to surround themselves with a cadre 

of like/small-minded posters for whom there’s 

no way but their way, the system/world is 

against them and for which factual evidence 

and logical argument hold no sway. 

But the mainstream media is no less to blame. 

When my wife was at school, which was a 

little while back, a teacher asked her class to 

go through a selection of newspapers across 

the spectrum and highlight any facts that were 

to be found. Even then, they were few and far 

between. Spin, opinion and frankly out-right lies 

were far more prevalent. It hasn’t changed. 

I suspect, though I cannot prove the point 

without considerably more research, that the 

position has worsened. 

Newspapers are desperate to shift 

copies, never more than now when all the 

traditional channels are under pressure from 

online services and diminishing advertising 

revenues. A fact is a fact and if reported at face 

value there’d be no differentiation. 

What is needed is an angle, a way of marketing 

the fact to make your version more appealing 

to the audience. Trouble is that the marketing 

has overtaken the fact. Often the actual truth 

of the matter isn’t just a detail, it actually gets 

in the way of what the paper wants to say. And 

television is as prone to this. Radio too. 

In the race for higher and higher 

readership/viewing figures, sensation wins over 

sense. It’s hardly surprising that we have an 

entire generation of politicians for whom being 

flexible with the truth has moved from being 

an occasional necessary evil to standard 

operational procedure. There is a movement 

to hold politicians to account. That when they 

stand and make a promise or statement that is 

untrue, they’re penalised. It has yet to gain any 

real traction but surely it ought to be law? If a 

businessman lies about the profitability of his 

company he can go to jail. But the leading 

politicians of the day can claim that black is 

white, that a massive cut in funding represents 

record spending, anything that makes their 

position look good, without ever being held to 

account. 

And that’s what it comes down to. The lack of 

responsibility. Someone mouths off in the pub, 

gets abusive, bullying, they risk getting into an 

argument, possibly even decked. But online, 

they’re ‘wrapped in cotton wool’ safe. 

The newspapers have in recent times 

accused high court judges of being ‘enemies 

of the people’ for upholding the law and the 

Justice Secretary barely raised an eyebrow. 

They’ve run story after story, flawed and untrue, 

that have demonized every believer of Islam as 

being somehow a terrorist set on the downfall of 

Western civilisation (by which they mean white, 

Anglo-Saxon civilisation). And nothing. Not a slap 

on the wrist even. 

Now a maniac, fuelled on media lies, walks into a 

New Zealand mosque and kills 49 unarmed men, 

women and children. 

One of our new neighbours, in the course of a 

conversation, waited until she was just with my 

wife before very cautiously letting her know she 

was a Muslim. She was scared of our reaction. 

And this was before this latest outrage. Is this 

what we’ve come to? 

From the government, to the media, to every 

individual. We must be held responsible for our 

actions, our words and deeds. So that if there’s a 

doubt, we pause. If what we say, what we do will 

cause innocents harm, we stop. And if we don’t 

we should be held accountable.

Heavenly Herbs 

Plants in pots have become 

trendier in recent years; indeed 

put just about anything in a 

container and someone will want 

it in their garden. But life in a pot 

or other container suits some 

plants better than others, to say 

the least. 

I’m not exactly a dedicated 

follower of horticultural fashion, 

but I have to say that I’ve always 

liked to grow herbs in pots. For 

starters they look pretty, and 

there are lots of ornamental 

variegated forms that are readily 

available too. But perhaps more 

importantly, herbs in pots can 

be kept in any well-lit spot close 

to the house. There’s no need to 

worry if your garden soil is too 

wet and soggy for them and, best 

of all, no need to go traipsing to 

the far end of your garden on 

wet, windy evenings just because 

you fancy perking up the supper 

with some fresh, zingy herbs. 

In a planter they can be within 

stretching distance and you won’t 

even have to put your wellies 

on! If your life lacks a garden, 

then herbs in window boxes are 

perfect. 

Most do not grow very tall so 

won’t block the light coming into 

your house, many are aromatic 

(so perfect on a warm evening 

when you have the windows 

open) and of course harvesting 

is extra easy – just open the 

window! Making a herb planter 

is easy and inexpensive, and the 

results should be long-lasting too. 

If your life lacks a 

garden, then herbs 

in window boxes are 

perfect 

You need a good-sized container 

– I love to use terracotta as these 

plants, many of which have 

Mediterranean origins, suit this 

material down to the ground. You 

will also need some good-quality 

compost, some horticultural grit 

and (of course) your favourite 

herbs. A local nursery or garden 

centre should provide you with 

a fantastic array of herbs perfect 

for your planter at this time of 

year. Some of my favourites 

include: variegated cream and 

green sage (why have just plain 

green?); ‘Tricolor’ sage, which 

also has splashes of purple on its 

leaves; golden lemon thyme (with 

a great lemony flavour); prostrate 

rosemary; chives; and golden 

oregano. But more important 

than taking note of my favourites, 

choose herbs you know you will 

actually enjoy eating, but opt for 

pretty varieties of these where 

available. 

Good drainage is essential for a 

herb pot or else the plants won’t 

last long at all. Use broken crocks 

(such a smashed flower pots or 

kitchen crockery) laid loosely over 

the drainage hole(s) before you 

add the compost and gravel. Make 

sure you buy proper horticultural 

grit and mix about one-part grit 

in with three parts compost. 

Horticultural grit is a must because 

the alternatives – such as grit used 

by builders – often includes salts or 

other impurities that can damage 

plants. 

Positioning the plants properly 

within the container is really 

important too. The plants will get 

bigger than they are when you buy 

them, so allow them room to grow, 

but remember: if you choose your 

favourites, you’ll be constantly 

trimming them throughout the 

growing season, so planting a little 

closer than the plant label suggests 

should be fine! If you include a 

trailing or prostrate form of herb, 

it helps to position it close to the 

edge so it can cascade downwards. 

Unless you have a phenomenal 

memory, I suggest you hide the 

labels around the edges of the pot, 

just beneath the soil, for reference 

later on. 

Once all the plants are out of 

their pots and in position in 

the container, fill in all the gaps 

between the root balls and around 

the edges of the container with the 

compost and grit mixture, firming 

it in as you go. After you have 

completed the gap filling, you can 

top dress the compost with grit, 

which helps to keep drainage good 

around the crowns of the plants, 

makes the planter look better and 

helps to discourage weeds and 

many pests too. 

Next, water the pot well to settle 

the compost, top up the grit layer 

if necessary, then stand your pot in 

a sheltered spot close to the house 

door or even on your balcony 

or patio so it is easily accessible, 

whatever the weather. If you find 

you’re not eating the foliage fast 

enough, you can always freeze 

chopped herbs in ice cube trays 

with a little water for use later in 

the year when growth is slower.

The New Moon Rescue -TNR is a UK registered charity. 

It’s main purpose is to rescue stray and colony cats. 

The New Moon Rescue has a strict no kill policy. 

Based in Coulsdon we cover Surrey, Middlesex and Kent. 

We have helped over 260 cats and kittens since starting on 

1st June 2018. 

The New Moon Rescue is self funded so relies entirely on 

voluntary contributions and money made from fund raising Charity No:1180018.

Spring Into Pattern 

Sweetly pretty or boldly dramatic, pattern 

has the potential to transform any room. 

While you could be forgiven 

for thinking that anything goes 

in interior design these days 

(actually, it pretty much does), 

eye-catching patterns are 

certainly having a moment. From 

simple geometrics to the catwalkinspired 

‘matchy matchy’ look 

of all-over pattern – yet another 

rollback to the styles of the 

Seventies and Eighties – pattern 

seems to be everywhere, even in 

an unexpected trend for covering 

ceilings with patterned wallpaper 

or faux tin tiles (look it up on 

social media for examples and 

how-tos.) 

There’s no doubt that including 

pattern brings character to a 

home, but it can be daunting, and 

may not seem like an easy thing 

to pull off. Start by looking for 

inspiration – perhaps in the form 

of something you already own, 

such as a painting, vase or throw, 

or else images in magazines, 

books and websites. Then think 

about where you stand in terms 

of your pattern partiality. Simple, 

graphic motifs in muted colours, 

or naturalistic designs in vivid 

shades? Large scale or small? 

Historical prints or modern? 

Don’t forget that pattern is also 

present in subtle ways, such as 

the weave of fabric or basketry, 

the grain of timber or the loops 

of knitting, for example. These 

almost invisible patterns all add to 

the dynamism of a scheme, and 

should not be overlooked. Next, 

consider where it’s appropriate to 

use pattern. For some, it’s a subtle 

element within a room, such as a 

small blind or a cushion cover; for 

others, it’s all-out, from walls and 

floor to fabrics and accessories. 

Remember that, in bigger rooms, 

you can afford to use very largescale 

patterns for impact, while 

smaller rooms are generally better 

suited to medium- or small-scale 

patterns – unless you want to 

make a particular feature out of a 

tiny room by filling it with a giant 

pattern (this can work really well 

in a downstairs WC, for example). 

Many people are worried by the 

idea of mixing patterns together 

and, if that’s you, there’s no 

harm in starting simple, with 

just a dash of a single pattern. 

For anyone who wishes to be 

daring and combine two or more 

patterns, one way to start is by 

studying the professional pattern 

books created by the fabric and 

wallpaper manufacturers, where 

it is easy to see which patterns 

work with which. This option, 

however, does limit you to the 

offerings of one company, so to 

introduce greater variety and 

interest, try creating a mood 

board, using swatches of fabrics, 

wallpapers and paint, and cut-out 

images of furnishings, loosely 

attached to a large, white sheet 

of board. Some interior designers 

are less formal, and simply like to 

spread everything out in front of 

them. Either way, it helps to place 

the most dominant pattern first – 

which may be the brightest, or the 

one with the largest scale – and 

work from there, adding others 

as you go. The point is to see how 

well the different elements work 

together, swapping items in and 

out, or changing their proportions, 

until the overall look feels right 

for you. Combining patterns can 

be as simple as choosing a floral 

and a stripe in one colourway, 

or it may involve time and effort 

spent on putting together just the 

right elements from a variety of 

sources. 

For patterns that co-ordinate, 

complementary colours are key. 

Lighter and darker versions of the 

same hue work well together, and 

will provide a pleasing variety, 

rather than all colours being 

exactly the same. After working 

out a comfortable colour balance, 

think about scale, as a variety of 

scales adds interest and impact. 

Bear in mind that very small-scale 

patterns are only really noticeable 

close up; from a distance they 

look like a plain colour, so are 

a decorative but quite subtle 

element within a scheme. Next: 

density. Loose, open patterns 

give a visual ‘breather’, while 

intricate patterns with closely 

placed designs have more drama. 

As with scale, when using several 

types of pattern together a 

variety of densities gives balance 

and interest. And finally: design. 

Abstract, figurative, retro, 

traditional, modern – you name it, 

there’s something for everyone, 

and a confident mix of patterns 

that cohere will make a room 

seem like it has evolved naturally 

over time and provide enormous, 

long-lasting appeal.

Your first kiss, that devastating 

relationship break-up or the 

holiday of a lifetime: music has the 

power to evoke memories in ways 

that nothing else can. But what if 

you can no longer remember key 

events in your life? Recent research 

has shown the remarkable effect 

music can have on dementia 

patients, many of whom have lost 

the ability to communicate. 

Children respond to music at 

an early age, before words and 

language are developed. The 

brain’s auditory system is the first 

to fully function at 16 weeks, which 

means that babies are musically 

receptive long before they start 

to speak, so it’s not surprising 

that music can still provoke a 

powerful reaction when our verbal 

capabilities have been reduced 

or lost. For dementia sufferers, it 

seems to be a case of first in, last 

out. 

Sound science 

Scientists have discovered that 

a part of the nervous system 

linked to the immune system 

(and responsible for a wide range 

of mind states and emotions) is 

powerfully affected by music. 

That is why music therapy has so 

many different applications: it has 

been used to restore movement 

in stroke victims and to relieve 

feelings of depression. 

Listening to music can lift 

your mood by stimulating the 

release of dopamine, a chemical 

neurotransmitter that helps to 

control the brain’s reward and 

pleasure centres. In a 2011 study 

by McGill University in Montreal, 

participants’ dopamine levels rose 

Music and dementia: 

breaking the silence

up to 9% higher when they were 

listening to music they liked. 

When adults come together as a 

group to sing or listen to a piece 

of music, a similar effect can be 

found. Scientists have discovered 

that their bodies release the 

hormone oxytocin (the effect of 

this ‘bonding hormone’ can be 

seen when a parent sings a lullaby 

to their child) and this shared 

experience can create strong ties 

of friendship and community. 

Re-training the brain 

The brain has an incredible ability 

– known as ‘neuroplasticity’ – to 

repair and rewire itself. When 

one channel of communication 

is blocked, the brain can detect 

new pathways that allow 

the information through. A 

groundbreaking study by the 

University of Newcastle in 

Australia used popular music to 

help patients with severe brain 

injuries recall incidents from 

the past, forgotten due to their 

trauma. Incredibly, researchers 

found that music was the key to 

unlocking memories the patients 

had previously been unable to 

access. 

However, there’s a great 

difference between a patient 

with a brain injury and someone 

affected by dementia. No one is 

currently suggesting that music 

therapy might be a cure for 

dementia, but there is increasing 

awareness of music’s ability to 

tackle dementia symptoms and 

improve patients’ lives. 

Seeing is believing 

A YouTube video viewed over 

two million times shows an 

American man called Henry, living 

in residential care, who for ten 

years barely communicated with 

his carers and family members. The 

video shows that after listening on 

an iPod to the music he enjoyed 

as a young man, Henry is literally 

‘restored to life’: singing, moving 

his body and giving spirited answers 

to the questions posed by an 

interviewer. 

The late British neurologist and 

author Dr Leonard Sacks, who also 

appears in the video, comments: 

“I think this may be very, very 

important in helping to animate, 

organise and bring a sense of 

identity back to people who are ‘out 

of it’ otherwise.” 

Chreanne Montgomery-Smith had a 

similar experience while working in 

a nursing home, when she noticed 

that residents responded positively 

to music. 

“One of the activities I did with 

them was a quiz which involved 

playing familiar tunes,” explains 

Chreanne in an interview with 

Age UK. “The first week I did it 

nobody sang, the second week a 

few people joined in. By the third 

week everybody was singing along. 

One lady who didn’t know her 

own name knew every song in the 

quiz and sang them all. It made me 

realise that people with dementia 

had a special ability to remember 

songs.” 

She went on to found Singing 

for the Brain, which is run by the 

Alzheimer’s Society. This initiative 

aims to boost confidence, selfesteem 

and quality of life for 

people with dementia and their 

carers through interactive singing 

sessions. Thanks to charities such 

as the Alzeimer’s Society and Age 

UK, a wide range of music therapy 

projects is now available, making 

it possible for every care home in 

the country to have access to live 

musicians (details at ageuk.org.uk). 

Scientific research into the effect of 

music on dementia sufferers has yet 

to reach any definite conclusions, 

but according to Chreanne 

Montgomery-Smith, the benefits 

of bringing music into the lives of 

patients is clear: “Even if people 

with dementia can’t talk, they may 

be able to sing, whistle, clap or tap 

their feet. It helps them, and their 

carers, to feel life is worthwhile.”

Don’t be an April Fool 

Beware the tech scams trying to trick you. 

Unlike April Fools’ Day, 

which ends at noon, 

online trickery goes 

on all day every 

day. Some fraud is 

easily spotted but 

others can be really 

convincing. 

One of the most 

common kinds of 

trickery is ‘phishing’, 

which is when you 

receive official-looking 

emails from what 

appears to be your 

bank or a big-name 

website. The email 

usually says there’s 

something wrong 

with your account: 

click here to log 

in and fix it. But 

the link goes to a 

sophisticated fake, and if you 

enter your details the fraudsters 

can then use your details on the 

real website. 

That’s bad enough if it’s just 

one site, but many people use 

the same password on lots of 

different ones. If the fraudsters get your details 

for one website, they can then get into all the 

other sites you use. 

To prevent that from happening you can do a 

number of things. Firstly, never use the same 

password on more than one site and use the 

password manager built into Apple Macs, iPads 

and iPhones or use a third-party password 

manager such as 1Password, LastPass or Dashlane. 

Secondly, set up two-factor authentication. Sites 

from Google, Microsoft and other big names 

enable you to supplement your password so that 

when anybody tries to log in, a code is sent to your 

phone. No code, no entry. 

Thirdly, invest in security software. Look for ‘antiphishing’ 

in the features list: that means incoming 

emails are scanned against a list of known 

offenders. It doesn’t get rid of every fake email 

but it does filter most.

computer and either get your 

personal details or lock it up until you agree to pay 

a ransom. These calls are never genuine. 

Other scams are really old, but they’ve been 

updated for the digital age. Fraudsters 

misrepresent items on online shopping or auction 

sites, or they run offers for too-good-to-be-true 

deals as Facebook adverts – recent ads offered 

mountain bikes worth more than £500 for less 

than £50. There were no bikes, of course, and 

because the fraudsters weren’t in the UK anybody 

they fooled would find it exceptionally difficult to 

get their money back. Stick to reputable sites and 

go with your gut: if it seems too good to be true, 

it usually is.

Apricot & Orange Cheesecakes 

Finish off a meal with these creamy individual fruity cheesecakes. 

You can make them a day in advance. 

Ready in: 40 minutes, plus chilling | Makes 4 

Ingredients 

125g digestive biscuits, crushed 

40g unsalted butter, melted 

Zest and juice of a small orange 

2 tsp powdered gelatine 

250g full-fat soft cheese 

25g caster sugar 

200ml double cream, softly 

whipped 

FOR THE TOPPING 

200g dried apricots, chopped 

150ml orange juice 

Mint sprigs, sliced apricots and 

fresh berries, to decorate 

Place four 9cm ring moulds on a baking tray lined with baking paper (see 

tip). Mix together the crushed biscuits and butter and divide between the 

ring moulds, pressing down firmly with the back of a teaspoon. Chill for 30 

minutes. 

Place the orange juice in a small heatproof bowl and sprinkle over the 

gelatine. Microwave on the high setting for 30 seconds then stir until the 

gelatine has dissolved. Cool for 5 minutes. 

Place the soft cheese in a bowl and beat in the orange zest and caster 

sugar until smooth. Gently fold in the cooled liquid gelatine followed by 

the whipped cream. Spoon into the moulds and level the surface. Chill for 

3-4 hours. 

To make the topping, place the apricots and orange juice in a small pan 

and simmer for 5-10 minutes until the apricots are softened and nearly all 

the liquid has evaporated. Leave to cool, then process with a stick blender 

to make a smooth thick puree. 

Spread the apricot topping gently over the set cheesecakes and return 

to the fridge for at least 2 hours. To serve, run a knife around the edge 

of each mould and gently lift away. Serve decorated with sliced apricots, 

berries and mint sprigs. 

TIP 

If you don’t have ring moulds then use small individual ramekin dishes or 

individual tartlet tins.

New life, new light 

My garden is finally green again. The grass 

is sporting a verdant hue and everywhere I 

look there are signs of new life. It is the great 

tonic of the springtime and marks the close 

of the bare and prickly winter months (well, 

hopefully!) 

So far as I’m concerned, it couldn’t come soon 

enough! I’ve been aching for brighter, sunnier 

days; for walks on Sunday afternoons and sets 

of tennis in the evenings. Now that the clocks 

have gone forward, we are finally free again 

from winter’s tyrannical rule! 

A touch dramatic perhaps; though there is 

something truly wonderful about springtime. 

The spring bulbs are a source of fascination; 

they lay dormant for month after month, 

suddenly busting into life again in the spring. 

From something seemingly dead and buried 

comes new life. 

With that new life comes new light in the 

mornings and the evenings. Freeing us to 

enjoy the great outdoors. 

Easter, which falls later this month, is also 

about death, new life and new light. To the 

uninitiated, Good Friday seems somewhat 

inappropriately named. It is day set aside 

to remember the death of Jesus – and the 

sacrifice He made so that we could be made 

right with God. It is often marked in a sombre 

way by Christians: providing an opportunity to 

consider the costly sacrifice made by Jesus for 

us; though it is in the full knowledge that by 

Sunday there will be a reason to celebrate. 

Jesus did not remain dead and buried. In the 

Bible we read that he rose to life on the third 

day; defying everything we think we know 

about the world and offering us new life. 

Through his sacrifice he brought an end to the 

power of darkness that can so easily overtake 

us in our thinking, speech and actions. It 

means that we are able to find freedom and 

light as we journey through life with Jesus. 

This is why spring is such an appropriate time 

to celebrate Easter – it is an incredible picture 

of death to life; darkness to light. 

I hope you are able to enjoy the Spring and 

the lovely countryside that surrounds us and 

that you find exciting new life and light this 

Easter.

An assault on the 

senses for Caterham 

Valley this Easter 

Caterham Valley is promising 

a colourful and tasty start to 

the Easter holidays with two 

major initiatives to delight 

shoppers and visitors to the 

town. 

On Saturday, April 6, the first 

of a monthly pop up food and 

drink market will set up home 

in Church Walk, selling 

delicious artisan products 

made by suppliers based in 

Surrey, Sussex and Kent. 

Shoppers will be able to try 

before they buy, chat with the 

makers, as well as enjoy the 

magical spectacle of the 

town bedecked in colourful 

artwork, as for the second 

year running, Colour 

Caterham will have 

transformed the streets into a 

giant work of art. Community 

groups and local artists are 

currently beavering away on 

handmade creations ready 

to decorate the town’s lampposts 

and railings to create a 

rainbow of colour. 

“Colour Caterham and the 

town’s first official monthly 

food market will provide an 

assault on the senses for 

visitors and shoppers at the 

start of the Easter holidays,” 

said chairman of Caterham 

Valley For You, Andrew 

Browne. “It is wonderful that 

so many community groups, 

businesses and individuals 

have been involved in making 

the decorations for Colour 

Caterham and their efforts, 

along with the delicious 

offerings of the food and 

drink market, will provide 

an uplifting atmosphere in

There will be some surprises 

in store and businesses will 

be supporting the event with

artwork professionally framed 

by Caterham Galleries and put 

on display before being

Following a successful trial 

in autumn last year, the food 

and drink market will now be 

a feature of the town from 

April 6 and then every first 

Saturday of the month right 

up until December. 

The first market opens from 

9.30am until 3.30pm with a 

specially selected group of 

eight local producers 

showcasing cheeses, coffee, 

fudge, bread, pastries, cakes, 

wine and beer. Each month 

will see a changing line-up 

of stallholders, from familiar

Open banking: what’s in it for you? 

Open banking has heralded 

something of a revolution in the 

retail banking industry in the UK. 

It offers protection if you decide 

to share personal banking 

information with authorised 

third parties, and as a bank 

customer could offer you access 

to financial tools and resources 

that make money management 

easier. 

So why has open banking been 

introduced, and how might it 

affect you in day-to-day life? 

Why introduce open banking? 

An investigation into the 

retail banking market by the 

Competition and Markets 

Authority (CMA) revealed 

insufficient competition 

between the larger, more 

established banks and newer 

entrants. 

It was found ‘traditional’ banks 

were not trying sufficiently hard 

to retain or win customers, 

whilst new banks were finding 

growth particularly challenging. 

The CMA wants the industry as 

a whole to be more competitive, 

and also to make better use of 

advancing technology for the 

benefit of customers. 

How does open banking work in 

practice? 

When you sign up to a thirdparty 

provider’s service, they 

request permission to access 

your bank account. If this is 

provided, your bank is contacted 

and the instruction processed. 

The FCA publishes a list of

From a security perspective, 

you won’t be asked to share 

any login details other than with 

your bank, and you remain in 

control of the process from start 

to finish. You can limit the access 

for third parties to a defined 

period of time and revoke it 

whenever you wish. 

Are there any downsides? 

One potential downside of 

open banking is the threat that 

fraudsters could gain access to 

your bank account information. 

Security of your data as it’s 

transferred and used by other 

firms is a legitimate concern and 

you would need to contact your 

bank to find out their policy in 

this event. 

The new legislation is designed 

to offer protection if you are 

targeted, however. It’s also 

crucial to ensure third party 

providers are regulated by the 

FCA, and you can search the 

Financial Services Register online 

or the Open Banking Directory 

to find out. 

The main point to remember 

about open banking is that 

you don’t have to allow any 

third-party access to your bank 

account. It’s a system that only 

works on express permissions 

but one that could, in theory,

The electric motor’s instant 

torque means hybrids accelerate 

quickly from standing, and if 

driven gently most will remain a 

full EV at city-centre speeds. 

On faster roads, however, the CVT 

gearbox used in most mainstream 

hybrid cars doesn’t respond well. 

Is a hybrid car right for me? 

There are good reasons to switch 

from a petrol or diesel car, such 

as concerns over environmental 

impact, tax benefits for low 

emissions vehicles or simply to 

save money at the pumps. 

As full-electric cars aren’t suitable 

for every driver, a hybrid car 

may be the answer – merging 

combustion technology with 

electrification to give, in theory, 

the advantages of both. 

Types of hybrid 

Mild hybrids use very small 

electric motors and battery packs 

exclusively to aid the engine, 

and never drive the wheels 

directly. Often they’re virtually 

indistinguishable from driving a 

standard combustion-engined car. 

The traditional or parallel hybrids, 

popularised by the Toyota Prius in 

the late 90s, use a larger battery 

pack and electric motor and are 

capable of a few miles on electric 

power alone. Often, the cars will 

set off on electricity, with the 

engine cutting in over a certain 

speed or throttle load. They can’t 

be plugged in, and gain all of 

their electric power from brake 

regeneration and engine power. 

Plug-in hybrids can be plugged 

in to a socket or outlet, have 

bigger battery packs and electric 

motors, and can usually travel 

at least 20 miles without using 

the combustion engine. The 

aim is that they are driven mainly 

on electric power, with the 

combustion engine cutting in for 

longer journeys or under heavy 

load. 

Increasingly rare are rangeextending 

electric vehicles, which 

are essentially electric cars with a 

combustion engine added to act as 

a generator. 

What’s your mileage? 

High-mileage users still benefit 

from a diesel over a hybrid car in 

most situations, as the electric 

motors on most hybrid cars provide 

little or no assistance over a certain 

speed. Thus on a motorway cruise, 

a hybrid car reverts to being a 

petrol vehicle – but one burdened 

with the weight of a battery and 

electric motor. 

This is especially true of plug-in 

hybrids, which have excellent fuel 

economy figures when the battery 

is charged but drop to substandard 

levels when running on combustion 

alone. 

However, a high-mileage driver 

would see the cost benefits of a 

hybrid compared to a standard 

petrol car – but motorway users 

will still favour diesel.

The benefits of a hybrid system are 

most keenly felt around town, with 

the engine cutting in only when 

necessary.

Being able to charge a plugin 

hybrid or range-extending 

electric car at home is critical. 

These cars benefit most from 

regular charging, allowing 

owners to make the most of 

the electric-only range before 

switching on the combustion 

engine. 

Most of these vehicles, with 

ranges of around 30 miles on 

battery power alone, will mean a 

cost-saving regular commute as 

the engine will never switch on. 

However, standard hybrids 

don’t require charging and can 

be treated as a normal petrol or 

diesel vehicle. 

Worried about the environment? 

There are a few environmental 

concerns surrounding hybrid 

vehicles – for example, battery 

manufacture contributes 

significantly to the hybrid’s 

environmental footprint. 

The hybrid wins, however, when 

it comes to local emissions and 

air pollution. The ability to run on 

electricity alone at low speeds 

helps with particulate emissions. 

Are hybrid cars reliable? 

Hybrids have proven longevity 

and if looked after, a hybrid’s 

battery pack will last the vehicle’s 

lifetime. Regenerative braking 

reduces brake and tyre wear, 

aiding maintenance costs.

command a price premium 

so carefully consider the cost 

benefits and whether your

Natural History competition. “This 

image was taken in Southern Spain. 

This moth (which looks and acts like 

a small hummingbird) was flitting 

between Lantana blooms below my 

balcony. These moths hover in front 

of flowers so a fast shutter speed 

(1/1600 sec) was required to get a

Bird’s Eye View, April 2019

It is April and our summer visitors are returning 

to set up territories alongside our resident birds. 

Now is the time to rise and shine and get out to 

hear them proclaiming their presence in the dawn 

chorus. Those birds that only spend the winter with 

us will be doing likewise, but much further afield 

perhaps in northern Europe. 

But where can you go to see and hear 

birds? Of course you can look out of your kitchen 

window and stand in your garden. Not many 

birds there you may be thinking. You could be 

pleasantly surprised, however, if you keep your 

eyes and ears open to find how many bird species 

turn up throughout the year. And the same goes for 

the many open spaces we have in Croydon. 

South Norwood Country Park has a wide variety of 

habitats and regularly records around 100 species 

each year. Once again, though, our smaller parks 

and woods may hold more birds than you think. 

Go regularly to any of Croydon’s parks and the 

chances are that you will encounter 30 or more 

species over the course of a year. 

Even seemingly modest parks can turn 

up good birds. Thornton Heath Rec has seen Grey 

Wagtail and even Green Sandpiper using the 

Norbury Brook. Closer to the centre of Croydon, 

Wandle Park is showing signs of attracting some 

good birds as well, coming down to the newly 

uncovered River Wandle. 

Why not go out and see for yourself what you can 

find And if you do we would like to hear about your 

discoveries (especially if you take part in our 

ongoing survey of Croydon’s birds).

What – You Think You Can Stop God? 

“The kings of the earth set themselves, and the 

rulers take counsel together, against the LORD 

and against his Anointed…”

God didn’t provide a world-wakening trumpet 

blast to announce the arrival of his Son Jesus 

into our world. Only two small groups received 

the exclusive invitations to see the baby, and a 

third had the chance to go as well, but together 

they can be seen to represent our world. 

First to be invited were the shepherds, brought 

out of their fields to the Christ child on the day of 

his birth – representatives of the ruled, the poor 

and the powerless in the world.

religious class, and the Gentile nations and the

nothing stand in the way of the coming reign of 

your anointed Son Jesus. 

Amen.

We walk in the Surrey, 

Sussex and Kent countryside 

with the occasional London 

walk once a month, on a 

Sunday, usually the third. Our normal length 

walk is of 6-7 miles with one walk before a 

pub lunch, chat and a laugh and a shorter 

walk after. 

We are looking for a few new members, 

particularly younger ones (as we are almost 

all now over 60) to take the club forward, as 

we want to keep the club alive. 

As we meet at various locations in the 

countryside a car is essential, as is the 

ability to climb stiles and hills (although we 

tend to avoid too many hills).

Carshalton. We need volunteers to help on our 

rides for children and adults with disabilities.
