WRITING YOUR MEMOIR Mondays: April 3, 17; May 8, 22; June 5, 19 from 4 - 5 p.m. This series of classes will be focused on discussion, technique, and guidance. Participants will be expected to share snippets with other classmates to get feedback. Registration necessary only for first class. FOLK CONCERT Join us at the Ross Community Center on Monday, April 3 at 7 p.m. for a free folk concert! Adam Broome & Jaige Trudel of Maivish join forces with Rachel Bell to present acoustic folk music. These three seasoned performers will add an educational element by answering questions about their instruments and discussing the cultures and traditions from which they draw their music. MILKWEED FOR MONARCHS Monarch butterflies are a welcome pollinator in our Pennsylvanian landscape. Unfortunately, their very existence is under threat. Join us on Thursday, April 6 at 7 p.m. to learn about the amazing life of the monarchs, and how we can use our gardens to create a habitat that will help to ensure successful populations of butterflies. Each participant will receive seeds to help jump-start local food sources to support the butterflies. This program is free through the Audubon Society and a grant from the Department of Environmental Protection. Please register. MUSHROOMS: THE FUNGUS AMONG US Mushrooms and fungi serve many critical roles in our lives and the environment. Join the Allegheny County Park Rangers on Thursday, April 13 from 7-8 p.m. to learn how fungi and mushrooms influence many aspects of daily life and are a keystone in the function of almost all ecosystems on earth. Discover the beauty, danger, and complexity of the Kingdom Fungi. Registration is required. GET CRAFTY @ NORTHLAND: YARN WRAPPED FLOWER POTS Create colorful, yarn-wrapped flower pots to house the beautiful blossoms of the season. Join us on Monday, April 17 from 7-8:30 p.m. Participants will take two ordinary terra-cotta pots and transform them into vibrant accents to brighten up any decor. They also make wonderful house warming presents or Mother's Day gifts. This class will be led by Cindy Simon Creations. Each class ends with a free raffle for an item pertaining to that evening's class. The cost to participate is $15 per person, which covers all supplies and instruction. Cash, check, credit cards & Apple Pay are accepted. Payment is due upon arrival to the class. Please register. DIGITAL BOOT CAMP FOR PARENTS: MAKING TECHNOLOGY WORK FOR YOU (April 22 -- 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.) Our students can design new computer programs, create videos, and build smartphone apps. Without proper guidance, these positive behaviors can cross the line into criminal offenses. Part of our Digital Boot Camp for Parents series, this session will touch on the ethics of technology and explain the limits of legal hacking and downloading. It will be held on the CCAC North campus; Room 3002. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. with the presentation starting promptly at 9 a.m. Registration is required and space is limited. An American Sign Language Interpreter will be present at this session. SECURE YOUR ID DAY: FREE PAPER SHREDDING EVENT April 22, 2017 LOCATION: St. John's Lutheran Church, front parking lot. 311 Cumberland Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15237 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. or until filled Join the Better Business Bureau and Northland for a free Identity Theft & Fraud Prevention event which features free on-site document destruction. BBB volunteers will guide cars through a moving line, offload their disposable items, shred them on the spot and distribute goodie bags with educational ID theft and fraud prevention materials. INDIAN COOKING CLASS: MOONG DAL Ann Manchella will demonstrate the preparation of another tasty vegetarian food from India: Moong Dal. Moong Dal, or cooked green lentils, is a protein rich dish and goes very well with hot rice. Watch her preparation and taste a generous sample on Monday, April 24 at 7 p.m. Copies of the recipe will be available for you to take home to try it for yourself. Registration is required. @ Northland Library 10 MONEY SMART MOVES TO MAKE IN 2017 Join us on Thursday, April 27 at 7 p.m. to celebrate Money Smart Week and gain some valuable knowledge at no cost! Newlin Archinal, certified financial planner, and Claire Saenz, attorney, will discuss taxes, estate planning, investing, and saving for retirement. Learn about essential personal finance steps to take in 2017 to make your financial year great. Please register. COIN APPRAISAL FAIR Drop in on Saturday, April 29 between 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. to find out what your old coins are worth and enjoy some time with our expert coin enthusiasts! To honor National Coin Week, members of the North Hills Coin Club are offering residents the opportunity to bring in their old coins for an informal evaluation and to view some outstanding coin collections. Members will share their expertise on coins of all kinds. Refreshments will be provided. No registration is required. WISE WALK Tuesday, April 18 - 9:30 a.m. Subsequent weeks: April 25, May 2, May 9, May 16, May 23, May 30, June 6, June 13, June 20 at 9:30 a.m. The Library will offer another 10-week Wise Walk program beginning on Tuesday, April 18. Meet at the library on the 18 at 9:30 a.m. to receive informational handouts, then go to North Park with our volunteer leader and walk for 30 to 40 minutes. For the remaining nine weeks, the group will meet each Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. directly at Pie Traynor Field to walk together and enjoy the spring weather. Water and snacks will be provided each week. Registration is required for week 1 only and opened on March 15.
Ongoing Adult Programs Film Series FOREIGN FILM: A Man Called Ove (Drama/Comedy from Sweden) Wednesday, April 12 at 1:30 p.m. Ove an isolated retiree who has given up on life. Enter a boisterous young family next door who flattens Ove’s mailbox while moving in. This is a heartwarming tale of unreliable first impressions and the gentle reminder that life is sweeter when it’s shared. No registration is required. Refreshments will be served. TRAVEL FILM: Bulgaria/Romania Wednesday, April 19 at 2 p.m. We’ll see a few areas of interest in Bulgaria including the capital before heading over to Romania’s capital Bucharest to Transylvania to Bran Castle. We will also learn about gypsies. No registration is required. Refreshments will be served. Ongoing Activities STORY SWAP StorySwap, an open forum to swap stories, practice the ones you may have or just listen. This group is intended for older teens and adults and meets on Monday, April 3 at 7 p.m. No registration required. STEEL CITY WORDSMITHS This group of writers working towards a published story will meet on Monday, April 10 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. to discuss story topics and give feedback. Questions?
