בס''ד The Shomre Hadas Seder Handbook Preface: There is a well-known metaphor of two beggars, one Jewish and one not, who would travel and beg together. On the Seder night the Jewish beggar offered to help his non-Jewish friend out and get him a good meal. ‘’Just get dressed up in Jewish cloths and go to the Synagogue you will surely get invited out to a good sumptuous meal’’ he tells him. His friend happily agrees and does just that. But when they meet a few hours later The Jewish beggar finds his friend furious at him. “What did you get me into? You call that a meal?” he yells lividly. His friend, surprised, asks him what transpired. ‘’Well here I was with an empty rumbling stomach expecting a good hot meal, but instead, right in the beginning, they gave me this cup of wine to drink, which because of my empty stomach caused my head to spin. We then got up to wash our hands, but instead of bringing out food we ate this little onion dipped in salt water, which made my stomach rumble even more. Then as I was getting hungrier and hungrier they started talking and yapping for what seemed like hours on end. As I began to feel that I couldn’t take it anymore, we got up to wash our hand again! Here I was hoping to finally get some food but instead they fed me this hard dry cracker. Then they finally gave me something that looked like food, a white vegetable in some green leafs, so I took a bit bight and then the pain hit me like a sledgehammer. I felt as if my mouth was on fire. Before I could recover, they then gave us the hard cracker and the fiery vegetable to eat; it was then when I said enough is enough and I picked myself up and ran out of there. You Jews are crazy! His friend sighs and tells him, ‘if you would have just held out for another few moments you would have had that sumptuous you were hoping for.’ 1
בס''ד The Shomre Hadas Seder Handbook Dear friends, it occurred to me that at times the seder night feels to us as it did to this non Jewish beggar. We can lack the knowledge and know-how that are behind the customs and traditions of the Seder thereby making our the Seder experience seem meaningless, and for some maybe even dreadful (even if we know when we will be able to eat). We hope that with this handbook our Seder experience will be infused with new inspiration and passion. Thereby helping us to truly internalize the message the Seder has to teach us and to fully experience freedom, each of us in his/her own way. Much thanks to nleresources.com for all their input.
