Online Passport Application
– Photographers Guidelines
The Passport Service values
the role pharmacies play in
providing passport photos
to citizens who are applying
for a passport. As a reliable
photo provider, you are
a key partner in ensuring
that photos provided to
the Passport Service are
of the highest standard
and meet our very specific
guidelines. It is a relationship
we value and one we wish
to see continue as we
now introduce the Online
The Passport
Service
introduced the
Online Passport
Application on
30 March for adult renewal
passport applicants. People
can use this service by going
to www.dfa.ie via their PC,
tablets or mobile phones. It
will be convenient, secure
and it will offer faster, more
predictable turnaround times
for our applicants. Though
this more streamlined service
will mean no more printed
photographs, the Passport
Service will still rely on you,
as a valued passport photo
provider, to produce digital
images for customers
wishing to apply for their
passport online.
When taking a digital
photograph for the Online
Passport Application, please
follow these instructions:
n Don’t go too close
around the head or crop
the image too tightly;
n Don’t go too far back,
about mid torso is
too far;
n A colour photograph
is required;
n The digital photo
provided for upload
cannot be less than 715
pixels wide and 951
pixels high; and
n Provide a digital photo
in a JPEG format to
the customer for
uploading to their
online application.
The Online Passport
Application will not accept
files larger than 9MB.
By following the guidelines
above, you will be able to
produce a digital image
required for the Online
Passport Application.
Printed photos will still be
required for children, firsttime
applicants and adults
wishing to use the existing
Passport Express service. The
guidelines for printed photos
remain the same. You can
inform your customers of
the different options so they
can decide which type of
photograph they need.
We look forward to our
continued partnership with
pharmacies in providing
passport photos to our
customers. The Passport
Service is keen to ensure that
this new service is a success,
and with your continued help,
we will be able to provide our
citizens with a faster, more
convenient and secure way
to get their passport.
