Before structuring the relationship,<br />
corporates should consider entering a less<br />
formal relationship, with limited commitment<br />
on both sides, leveraging the collaboration<br />
platform so the startup can demonstrate its<br />
potential as a business partner, clarify what<br />
it has <strong>to</strong> gain in the partnership, and test the<br />
team’s complementarity. This process should<br />
function only as a temporary transition,<br />
however. Clear, ad hoc miles<strong>to</strong>nes for<br />
assessing how and when <strong>to</strong> decide whether<br />
further deepen the relationship should be<br />
defined quickly, using a go/no go approach<br />
with flexible timing. Several practices can<br />
be very helpful:<br />
• Share a common objective. One major<br />
pitfalls that both startups and corporates<br />
report is the lack of transparency and<br />
alignment on a clear common goal from<br />
the relationship’s beginning, leading <strong>to</strong><br />
wasted time or painful renegotiations.<br />
