Mile High United Way
We can do more together.
SM
2008 - 2009 Annual Report
Mile High United Way Board of Trustees Chairman Brad Busse and President and CEO Christine Benero at the 36th Annual Mile High United Way Turkey Trot.
Dear Friends,
How fortunate we are to live in a community where neighbor helps neighbor and where people realize that by coming together
we can make great things happen. With your support, Mile High United Way is leading the charge for the kind of
change that is improving people’s lives every day. We are able to do this while continuing to build on our legacy of being the
fi rst United Way in the country and our commitment to collective generosity.
Together with our community partners we are investing in programs and
services designed to ensure that everyone, regardless of their circumstances,
has the opportunity to succeed. We are
preparing more children for a lifetime of
learning with broader access to quality
early care and education for low-income
families. We are providing more students
with quality aft er school programs,
caring mentors and the motivation they
need to succeed in the classroom and
graduate from high school ready for
the transition to college or advanced
training. And, we are guiding more individuals
and families to opportunities
geared to move them toward economic
self suffi ciency.
Th e strength of a community lies in its
ability to pull together for the greater
good, especially in challenging times.
Th is past year brought with it historic
unemployment, shrinking budgets and
dreams deferred. Yet, our community
looked beyond all of that- way beyond-
and came together to move Mile High
United Way forward like never before.
For the fi rst time, three major network
affi liate television stations (CBS4, 9News and 7News) joined forces to tell the
United Way story. Th ey each graciously provided one of their news anchors to
tell the story of real people whose lives were made bett er through Mile High
United Way and its community partners.
Longtime donors Mark and Suzy Kennedy, members of the Tocqueville Society,
made an extraordinary gift . In January of 2009, Mark’s life was tragically
cut short in a skiing accident. In his estate plans, Mark made a legacy gift
to Mile High United Way. We thank the Kennedy family and honor Mark’s
wishes through the Mark and Suzy Kennedy Tocqueville Challenge which is
designed to immediately help new members join the Tocqueville Society by
increasing their gift s to $10,000 over a three year period.
And, over the summer, through a series
of community conversations, hundreds
of you including community partners,
donors, and concerned citizens told
us that Mile High United Way is right
on target. You affi rmed that our three
interrelated initiatives of School Readiness,
Youth Success and Adult Self Suffi
ciency absolutely align with community
needs.
Th at affi rmation of mission and proven
strategies along with our community’s
unyielding support is Mile High United
Way’s foundation for the future.
A bright future in which we each play
a part and share in the success of every
child who enters school with the skills
and support they need to succeed,
of every student who graduates high
school ready for bigger and bett er things
and of every family that takes those all
important steps toward economic self
suffi ciency.
Th anks to our donors, community partners and the dedicated staff and volunteers
of Mile High United Way, we are building a bett er community and we can
do more together.
Best Regards,
Christine Benero Brad R. Busse
School Readiness
High quality early
education and childcare
kept his girls focused,
engaged and supported
when they needed it most.
Now, Daniel says, they are
succeeding in school like
never before. He says people
who give to Mile High
United Way have changed
his family’s life.
Daniel Perez lost his wife in 2006. His three daughters lost their mother.
Suddenly, Daniel was a single parent. He needed help.
Th anks to Mile High United Way and its community partner Warren Village, he found that help.
school readiness initiative
Each year, Mile High United
Way’s School Readiness
Initiative provides thousands
of children of low-income
families access to high quality
early education, their teachers
with on-going training to
improve their knowledge and
skills and much more.
Young children in low income families enter school ready
to succeed and are prepared for a lifetime of learning.
3
Youth Success
But that all changed
thanks to Colorado
Youth At Risk, a Mile
High United Way
supported youth
mentoring organization.
Fatima says having Yvett e as
her mentor has made all the
diff erence. She’s excelling in
school, her life at home is
bett er than ever and she’s
Fatima Kiass and Yvett e DeSilvre can and do talk to each other about anything.
And, that’s just the way it should be.
Yvett e is Fatima’s mentor. Th e pair met three years ago when Fatima says she felt lost and confused.
Family stresses left her unable to focus on school and look forward to making plans for her future.
youth success initiative
making plans for college and
a career as a teacher.
Youth mentoring is a key
focus of Mile High United
Way’s Youth Success
Initiative, which each year
provides thousands of
students access to mentoring,
quality aft er school programs,
tutoring and gang and
violence intervention
programs.
School age, low-income and under-served youth
succeed academically, graduate fr om high school and
are ready to transition to college or advanced training.
Adult Self Suffi ciency
the Denver Rescue
Mission’s Champa
working her way to
and, through a collaboration
with Denver’s Road
Calling For Help
He and his family were facing the chilling possibility
of having their power cut off just as winter’s cold set in.
Th en he called United Way’s 2-1-1 for help.
“It’s okay to ask for help,” says Robert
Paiz of Denver. “Don’t be embarrassed.
Everyone needs a hand up
sometimes and 2-1-1 is a good place
to look for help.”
Robert, the father of four, is speaking
from experience. He recently called
Mile High United Way’s 2-1-1 looking
for help with paying his utility bill.
“Th ey were set to shut off our power
the day I called 2-1-1,” he says, “but,
thanks to the referrals I received we
got the help we needed right away.”
Without that help, Robert and his
family may well have joined the ranks
of countless Colorado families who,
as a result of their inability to pay for
their energy costs, fi nd themselves
dangerously close to becoming homeless.
In fact, a University of Colorado
Health Sciences Center study says the
inability to pay for home energy ranks
as the second leading cause of homelessness
in Colorado.
Th ankfully, Paiz has been able to maintain his home. But, as a result of the
downturn in the economy and like so many others in our community, he is
unemployed and feverishly searching for work. When cash started to run
low, he didn’t know what he would do. Th at’s when he heard about United
Way’s 2-1-1 and decided to give it a try.
20
United Way’s
Get Connected. Get Answers.
“I was apprehensive at fi rst, but the Referral Specialist was very welcoming
and patient,” says Paiz. “She listened to me and was very helpful.”
United Way’s 2-1-1 is a free service for the community. It boasts the most
robust list of community agencies and services available and is a vital part
of Mile High United Way’s Adult Self
Sufficiency Initiative which supports
programs and services that provide
individuals and families the opportunity
to move toward economic selfsuffi
ciency. With one phone call (just
dial 2-1-1) or on line search, those
who need help are referred to agencies
off ering services to meet their
needs. People can also give back to
the community through 2-1-1.
Check out 2-1-1 call statistics on our
website and learn more about the
most pressing needs in our community.
Paiz says he knows, fi rst hand, the
value that Mile High United Way
brings to the community. In fact, at
his previous job he supported United
Way through payroll deduction
in his workplace campaign. He says
that once he and his family are back
on their feet, he is determined to give
back, again.
Until then, he says he is grateful for the help he is receiving through Mile
High United Way and United Way’s 2-1-1. And, for those fi nding themselves
facing similar challenges, Paiz off ers this bit of advice.
“You have to maintain a positive att itude,” he says. “A sense of hopelessness
is not helpful. Wait for the rainbow. It’s cloudy today, but it might be sunny
tomorrow.”
