From the Commodore
Since the Summer edition of ‘Royals’ Magazine,
much has happened in the Club.
As usual, all of the Christmas festivities went well,
Santa By Seaplane for the children, the Commodore’s
Christmas Lunch and the end of year lunches and
dinners. It's great to see more activity in the house
lately, especially with the ever popular Friday Night
Draw and Raffle drawing some good crowds and lots
of laughs. Our new Chef, Hando, has also settled in
nicely, receiving compliments for the quality of his
food and producing a variety of menus and dishes to
suit all tastes, whether for a sit down dinner in the
Dining Room or a casual snack for Sunday lunch on
the Deck.
Racing: The Festival of Sails was again a colourful
event and congratulations go to our podium finishers
in this event, namely Kate, Merak, Escape, Vitesse,
Moneypenny, Circe, Secret, North Encounter,
Harlequin, Stig's Audi Driving Cousin, Chutzpah 38,
Executive Decision and Top Gun. And what of the
Association Cup I hear you ask? We retained the Cup
yet again despite strong challenges from the kindred
clubs. It was excellent racing which I observed close
at hand on Thorsen, the Committee boat. Thanks to all
who represented our Club.
As normal, we raced to West Channel pile in May for
the annual Phoenix Trophy race, over 20 boats stayed
at QCYC and we enjoyed a jovial communal dinner
and raised a record $2,585 for ‘Cottage by the Sea’,
thank you to all who contributed, an excellent
result. The Sunday following the Phoenix saw the
start of the inaugural Sun Theatre Passage Trophy
Lady Skippers' Race from Queenscliff to
Williamstown. There were 9 starters, see the
accompanying story for the result.
Speaking of the ladies, thank you to the lady skippers
and their crews who represented RYCV in this year's
Port Phillip Women's Championship Series, the
BLiSS Regatta and the Australian Women's Keelboat
Regatta, I look forward to seeing more of our female
members taking the lead on the water next year.
Winter racing: Yes, there are good fleets participating
in the HBYC Brass Monkeys series and the Class
Monkeys series (where do all those Bluebirds come
from?) It's pleasing to see the Eastern hardstand
empty out on Bluebird Class Monkeys race days,
obviously a fun and accessible class to be sailing in.
Junior Sailing: Again a good year, you will read more
detail from the Cadets in their reports. Having seen
first hand how successful some of the junior sailors
are in Victoria, we must continue to encourage and
nurture them.
Cruising: Cruising is destined to get bigger and
better. It was in 2009 that I published in Royals a
copy of the Portarlington Safe Harbour plan and this
may in fact be implemented, let’s hope it does as it
will provide another great, safe boating destination
for Port Phillip. The SS Rendezvous programme is
going well and we encourage and look forward to
even more participation as members become more
aware of some of the fun events and destinations on
offer.
The Lease: John Forsyth and I finally signed the 65
year lease on behalf of the Club on 14th May and
many thanks go to Chris Tucker, our Honorary
Solicitor, for all his work in finalising this
agreement. This time we made sure that Parks
Victoria and the Minister signed first! The new lease
now means the Club has security of tenure and can
develop the site over a long period with no chance
of losing its valuable assets. This is the most
important document the Club has signed for many
years and has been the longest lease of its kind
provided by Parks Victoria of recent times.
New Marina: With the signing of the Parks Victoria
lease finalised, we have started to market the new
Marina and you will see a variety of advertising
cropping up in all sorts of places for the 20 year
lease pens we are selling. All current Senior
Member boat owners have been contacted to gauge
their intentions, whether for long term or short term
leases. You will see graphs appearing in the club
soon as we move towards our target number of long
term leases and when we reach this number, we can
commence construction after authorisation by the
Members. Actual construction time will take about
9 months after a 3 month preparation time.
IFDS: The 2015 IFDS Disabled Sailing World
Championships is looming fast. The logistics crews
are grappling with 30+ countries, 40+ containers, a
special floating marina and much more. This event
in late November will be a time of intense activity
and if you can assist in any way, please contact the
Club office or Vice Commodore Michael McLean,
the Regatta Chairman. This is a most important
event for us, please support it. Please note, with the
temporary marina being built near 'A' row, the ’A'
row boats will be relocated for the duration of the
event.
From the Commodore
We are still looking for more sponsors for the IFDS
World Championships, so if you can help, it will be
very much appreciated. All donations are tax
deductible.
Meetings: These ranged from a heated half yearly
AGM in February, which, in all honesty, I would like
to put behind us, to an excellent SGM in June that
passed a solution for the ‘hole’ originally destined for
the platform lift. As you read this, work should be
underway on this project with completion due by the
end of September.
Finally, I wish to thank all of our Club’s staff who do
a wonderful job for us, sometimes under trying
circumstances, thank you all. Good luck to all
members for another year of fabulous sailing and I
look forward to greeting you at the Club.
A Most Generous Gift…
I am very pleased to announce that member Mr
Nigel Peck AM, whose family has a long history
with our Club, has very generously donated $5M
for the re-development of the clubhouse. This is
the largest gift ever received by the Club and
words cannot express our gratitude to Nigel.
Previously Nigel had financed the design for a
renovated clubhouse. However, at recent meetings
he stated his intention to finance the complete
project.
A group had already been set up under PC Michael
Smith comprising Anne Smith, Doug
Shields, David Allen and Jim Clifford to review
the proposal and in light of the full funding will
now prepare a brief for the architect, Peter McIntyre
AO. Meetings have already taken place and
we are working towards construction in 2016.
This is a very exciting time for the RYCV, this
new development, combined with the 65 year
lease and the new marina, will
give the club a most solid foundation
for the future.
There is attached a very relevant
document, dating back to
1935.
Please read it and enjoy.
Another successful summer sailing season has
concluded and it is always pleasing to see Club
boats performing well across a wide range of
events. The Rolex Sydney to Hobart race saw three
Club boats entered in a race that had a bit of
everything. Chutzpah came home a creditable
second overall (Bruce’s second runner up finish)
and won her division, the eleventh time in twentyseven
starts that Bruce has been a divisional
winner. Cadibarra 8 finished fifteenth overall and
Alien fiftieth, congratulations to Paul and Justin for
making it all the way to Hobart.
Club boats also featured in the ORCV offshore
races with Blue Chip, Mika, Spirit of Downunder
and Yoko making up the bulk of the numbers in the
disappointingly small seven boat Westcoaster fleet.
Royals supplied three of the four boats that entered
the Port Fairy race, Blue Chip, Spirit of
Downunder and Yoko.
In inshore Club Marine Series racing, Cadibarra 8
took out the AMS honours in Division 0, Top Gun
took the IRC win from Executive Decision in
Division 2 and in Division 3, Lucy in the Sky took
out the win in PHS and Footloose was runner up in
both AMS and PHS. The Stig’s Audi Driving
Cousin continued their road trip of sportsboat
events on the east coast and came away with a win
at the Queensland State Titles, the Victorian State
titles, the Festival of Sails and was runner up at the
National Titles held on Sydney Harbour in January.
The Association Cup was keenly contested and I’m
pleased to report that the Club retained the title of
Champion Club once again (ninth year in a row I
believe). Special thanks go to the owners and crews
of Absolut, Executive Decision and Top Gun who
made up the IRC team and Paragon, Way to Go
and Chutzpah 38 who raced in the AMS division.
Special congratulations to John Dusting who
determined to be the Crew Member of the Year;
having provided great support to the team on
Chutzpah over many years and Bruce Taylor was
awarded this year’s Yachtsperson of the Year.
Congratulations to each of you.
The Club’s junior sailors, who are the future of the
Club, have put in a commendable training effort
throughout the summer, culminating in Louis
Schofield and Peter Allen finishing fourteenth at
the Cadet Class World Championships and eighth
at the Class National Championships. Well done to
Louis and Peter and thankyou to the parents of the
sailors who have supported and supervised the
training program. Thank you also to the OTB subcommittee
and volunteers who provided race
management support to the Lipton Cup Regatta.
As well as running a full program of our own
events, Race Director David LeRoy and the
volunteer race management team have been
responsible for providing race management
services for the Club Marine Series, ISAF Sailing
World Cup, the Festival of Sails, the ORCV
Boxing Day Dash, the ORCV offshore races, the
ORCV Winter Series, the Classic Yacht
Association of Australia races and coming in at
short notice due to illness of a fellow Race Officer
at the Moth World Championships held out of
Sorrento.
From the Club Captain
The Club offers it’s thanks to the volunteer team of
David Wallace, Denis Spinley, Sally Markham,
Wanda English, Mal Chisholm, Geoff Wright,
Commodore David Seaman, Tom LeRoy and HBYC’s
Ray Proudlock for providing their assistance.
Whatever your sailing aspirations the Club is
offering a great range of events to suit.
I would like to reserve my final comment to thank
a tireless volunteer for the Club, John Burgess has
headed up the Lipton Cup Regatta Organising
Committee since its inception and is additionally
acting as secretary for the IFDS Organising
Committee. John has been a previous President of
Yachting Victoria, a wonderful supporter of the
Sailing Committee and a huge asset to the Club.
Thank you John.
David Ellis
Club Captain
The Sailing Committee continues to place safety as a
priority. David LeRoy, Andy Merlot and Joe Wetzels
have completed a Yachting Australia Safety Auditors
training program with the intention to conduct more
spot checks of safety equipment on Club registered
boats throughout the season.
Following a review of the mix of events held last year,
boat owners and crews will be interested to know that
we have selected three fixed marks races Awinya Cup
(Nov 21), Elwood Huon (Dec 21) and Lord Forster
(Feb 6) to form a separate series. While we do rely on
our neighbouring Clubs to run events to lighten the
load on our volunteer race management team, this
winter’s conduct of a popular series in Hobsons Bay
has been of less than acceptable standard and as a
result, our Club intends to run it’s own three race
autumn series in 2016. The dates have been selected
and race documentation will follow closer to the
event.
Looking ahead to the coming summer, the Club, will
continue to offer a wide range of events. Andy Merlot
has put together a social sailing schedule that we call
S.S Rendezvous. Some of these events are short trips
up the Yarra while others are orientated around special
events such as trips to Mornington Peninsula wineries
or the Queenscliff Music Festival. We will continue to
run events on behalf of the Classic Yacht Association,
twilight racing, Wednesday afternoon racing, Sunday
racing as well as our traditional Saturday racing.
7
Sail Training and Development
community, and will continue again this summer
season. Thanks to all those who assisted with that
program. If members would like to contribute to that
program by way of donations (which are tax
deductible through the Australian Sports Foundation
Sail Training Fund) they can do so by contacting
either Ian Fox or the office. So keep a look out for
that.
Once again it has been another busy year for the
Royals Training Centre with almost 657 participants
in courses ranging from Tackers, keelboat courses at
various levels, powerboat handling, other associated
powerboat courses designed to help to obtain a boat
license, diesel maintenance, crane operators and
marine radio courses. This is up from 494 last year.
Once again, this year numbers for the Tackers
courses still appear to be dropping which is not
unique to Royals, it’s a national trend. However the
training centre has made up for it by an increase in
numbers for the various powerboat courses,
particularly those that assist boaters in gaining their
license.
Financially the Training Centre finished a bit better
than last year but still behind budget again mainly
due to the drop in Tackers participation. As in
previous years we are continuing to look at ways of
increasing revenue and broadening the courses
offered to attract all sailors and boat owners... All
the currently advertised courses are listed on the
RYCV website under Royals Training Centre, and
are drawing lots of interest. If you are keen, check
the website or get in touch
with Ian Fox.
The Club has entered into a charter arrangement
with Royal Brighton Yacht Club for them to take
two of our Elliot 5.9’s to use for their programs. The
conditions of that charter are such that they will
maintain them, paint them and make them available
to RYCV on the occasions that we need them.
In addition, Commodore David Seaman and others
have stripped another of the Elliott’s ready for
painting by Bernie Webber. In that way we can
refurbish all of the fleet over time.
I would like to thank the committee members, Ian
Fox, and Tony Johnson-Sneddon for their hard work
and attendance over the past year. If any members
would like to join this sub-committee, could they
please contact either me or Ian Fox, we would
appreciate your contributions.
Once again one of the
highlights for the year was the
increasing numbers and
success of the disadvantaged
schools program, which
started with and continues
with the Charles La Trobe
College (previously known as
Olympic Village Primary
School), and now also includes
Laverton North. It has been
hugely successful with the
students, staff and the schools
Membership Sub-Committee
Over the past 12 months your Membership
Committee has worked to;
-build and protect our membership base
-provide new members with a welcoming and
supportive introduction to our Club
-resolve any member grievances
Recruitment Strategy
Our strategy focusses on;
-impressing upon senior members the obligation to
ensure their crew have taken out the appropriate
membership
-improving our membership ‘value offering ‘to retain
members
-ensuring the introduction and induction process for
new members is a friendly and welcoming
experience
-promoting sailing as a fun, accessible and healthy
recreation for all skill levels.
To this end we have
-conducted a new member evenings
-participated in “Discover Sailing “as a measure to
attract new participants to our sport.
-conducted a variety of membership recruitment
initiatives
-continued to review our membership structure and
benchmark against other Clubs
-undertaken number of membership audits
Over the year we have recruited 72 new members
while losing 86 members to resignation and strike off
for a total membership of 883 (as compared to 897
last year)
Key Initiatives
Member Advance
Last year we advised on the introduction of a “members’
advance”. The advance is debited to members accounts and
is redeemable during the year at the dining room, bar and
sail training. The advance is intended to encourage all
members to regularly enjoy the Club’s amenities, promoting
an awareness of the value of membership thereby reducing
resignation rates.
While it is early days the results and feedback are very
encouraging
Member Protection
The Committee has developed an extensive policy to ensure
the Club has policies, protocols and mechanisms to properly
deal with any members’ grievance and ensure members are
safe and can comfortably enjoy their Club.
Code of Conduct
We have developed a Code of Conduct that will be
extensively communicated to all members and to new
members on induction. The Code is designed to ensure we
have the most welcoming, enjoyable Club amenity for
members and their guests .
Gratitude
I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication
of the members of the membership Committee;
Past Commodore Graeme West
Susan Webber
Helen Devine (Helen resigned during the year after making
a most substantial contribution to our work-thank you
Helen)
We advertised for new members to the Committee
– thank you to those members that expressed an
interest .
We subsequently appointed Catherine Borazio,
Dean Jackson as new members to the Committee
and they have already made a positive contribution.
Welcome Catherine and Dean
I would also thank Alex, Danielle, Ian and the
office staff for their assistance and passion for the
Club and the work of our Committee.
Off The Beach (OTB)
The 2014 - 2015 season has seen strong
participation across a variety of classes which
now includes international cadets, Lasers 4.7s,
radials and full rigs plus 29ers to provide
some high speed skiff excitement for the
young and not so young. Overall fleet
numbers are strong with the expectation that
they will grow. There will be a few initiatives
that will be trialled in the coming year to
broaden the appeal of OTB and encourage
tackers graduates to continue sailing at the
club as well as crate opportunities for parents
to sail with their children.
Cadet Class
The highlight of 2014 was undoubtedly seeing
Jonathon L crewed by Louis Schofield and
Pete Allen make the long journey to
Weymouth, England to compete in the World
Championship regatta where they finished a
very creditable 14 th place in a very strong fleet.
Royals are very proud of the way Loius and
Pete represented the Club and they have
provided a clear demonstration of what
can be achieved through hard work and lots of
on water training time.
Locally the summer season was well contested
with Clare Olding in Clarebuoyant emerging
triumphant in both the Club Aggregate and the
Club Championship with new skipper Patrick
Mills in Red Path coming in second and Ned
Peace in Bullant third.
Off The Beach (OTB)
At Christmas time 6 Royals boats made the
long trek to Port Lincoln to compete in the
National Championships with the top result
coming from Loius and Pete who were 8 th
overall which matched their result from a year
earlier. All the Royals participants thought the
long drive was well worth while with excellent
sailing conditions on most days, intense
competition at all levels within the fleet and
despite the warning signs prominently posted
on the beach, not a white pointer to be seen.
As usual the club provided some financial
support for each boat that participated from the
traveller fund. A big effort was made this year
to top up this fund by running a weekly BBQ
and raffle after the Wednesday twilight races.
A huge effort was put in by the Schofield
family in particular and the OTB team was
able to raise over $8000.
Senior OTB
The senior OTB fleet continues to grow with
15 boats entered for the summer season made
up of Lasers of various rig sizes and 49ers.
The top spot was taken out by Mark
Smallwood in Laser ,Goodbye Porpoispit, with
29er, Kaos, sailed by Harry Croft and Tom
Fowler in second and Laser ,Ornament, sailed
by club stalwart Peter Roberts in third place.
Volunteers
As usual the OTB on water actin was
supported by an army of volunteers to man the
canteen, the start boats and the safety boats.
Thanks to all who helped make it a successful
and safe summer of sailing.
Next Year
After one year in the seat, it is now quite
apparent that there is strong interest in OTB
sailing and that with a bit of thought and effort
we could make it a more integral part of the
Clubs sailing activities. Traditionally the Club
has supported a single class, International
Cadets, Over the Past three years a fleet of
Lasers crewed by Cadet graduates and some
older members getting back into smaller boats
has steadily grown and continues to be
supported. In addition some club members
have expressed the desire to sail in larger
dinghies with their son or daughter so we will
make Club Pacers available on a low rent basis
those who wish to participate in fun racing
with their kids.
A gap continues to exist for those kids who
have gone through the YV tackers program but
have not yet found themselves a spot in the
front of a Cadet. The Club tends to lose these
potential new sailors as there is no clear way
for them to stay engaged. For the upcoming
summer season, the OTB group would like to
trial running low key racing on the club side of
the channel in the Clubs fleet of OPTIs so that
that these kids get a regular sail on a Sunday
morning and can hang around to pick up a ride
in a Cadet if there are any spots for the Sunday
Afternoon racing. This will require an extra
level of planning and volunteering. Any
parents or experienced sailing instructors who
would like to support this new initiative would
be very welcome.
Development Committee & Marina Task Force
For the past year the Development Committee has
focussed on the marina project and more recently,
the opportunity for the redevelopment of the
Clubhouse resulting from the extremely generous
gift to the Club by Nigel Peck and his family.
May 15th 2015 will be remembered as an historic
day for our Club as on this day, the new 65-year
land and seabed lease was signed, including all of
our current land and an extension of our current
seabed.
It was a very exciting day for the Club. People
close to this project will understand the enormous
amount of work from Club volunteers and staff that
was required to achieve such a significant result.
We are in a very fortunate and enviable position
and our members can feel assured that the future of
the Club and our home has been secured for the
foreseeable future.
My thanks are extended to Commodore David
Seaman, Honorary Solicitor Chris Tucker, David
Sterrett and General Manager Alex McGillivray for
their untiring efforts. Thanks also to Hans
Nieuwland and Past Commodores Andrew Munro,
Bas Huibers and Tony Spencer.
Thank you to Parks Victoria for its show of faith
and trust in the Club to maintain and develop the
Crown land and sea bed. Our thanks are also
extended to members of the current and previous
governments: Local upper house members Bernie
Finn MP and Andrew Elsbury, and former Minister
Ryan Smith, current Ministers Lisa Neville MP and
Wade Noonan MP.
With a 65-year tenure over our facilities, the Club
can invest in capital works with complete
confidence that all of the benefits will be retained
by the Club, enabling the Club to accelerate
towards its Vision statement, ‘The Royal Yacht
Club of Victoria will be a leading yacht club in
Australia’.
Given our recent achievements, I wish to thank the
Club’s volunteers, staff and contractors for their
hard work, commitment and dedication during the
past year. The members of the Marina Project
Committee (MPC), which has met weekly for the
past 17 months, include Commodore David
Seaman, PC Peter Bedggood, PC Ray Borrett, Alex
Campbell, Rear Commodore John Duffin, PC
Andrew Munro, David Sterrett and General
Manager Alex McGillivray and me. Martin Hirons
and Ben Manning from Sports Business Partners,
and our project manager, Chris Nash from Nash
Management have provided outstanding guidance
and industry knowledge.
I also recognise the efforts of AWM which is the
Club’s maritime engineer, having completed all of
the wind, wave and weather analysis of our
environment. AWM has provided significant
technical expertise and will ultimately ensure our
new Marina will be a state of the art facility,
designed to meet the needs of our members.
More specifically the group has been working
through:
Consultations with our current members on their
intentions for the new Marina
Securing the Parks Victoria Lease
Developing financial models and forecasts
Analysing the environment and conditions in
conjunction with the engineers
Providing input and insights into the
tendering and evaluation process with our
project manager
Risk management
Finalising all of our approvals and permits
Assisting with member communications.
With regard to the design and construction of the
new Marina, the Club has received submissions
from various contractors for both the marina and
the wave wall and no further decision will be made
until we are much closer to reaching our Long-
Term Lease sales target.
Development Committee & Marina Task Force….
In the meantime, the current agenda items for the
MPC are securing our Parks Victoria Works
Permit, which is our only outstanding external
approval for the project and is well underway, and
marketing our additional new Marina pens.
As we progress through these challenges in the
coming months, we will be well placed to present
the entire project back to the membership for final
approval. This will take place at a formally
convened meeting.
From a marketing point of view, we have
essentially ‘sold out’ of Short Term Leases and we
have received oral commitments for approximately
30 Long Term Leases. We also have a further
twenty members currently considering the purchase
of a Long Term Lease.
We started our public campaign with a Press
Release announcing the new Marina on Wednesday
20th May and we were very pleased to have a
feature on page two of the Herald Sun the next
morning and a six and a half minute interview with
Commodore David Seaman on Red Symons’ ABC
breakfast radio program the same day. More
recently we have begun advertising the new Marina
in various magazines, online platforms and at
industry events such as the 2015 Melbourne Boat
Show.
In August, Commodore David Seaman announced
the wonderfully generous gift of $5M to our Club
by Nigel Peck and his family for the redevelopment
of the clubhouse. The Development Committee,
will have the responsibility of delivering the new
project.
This has to be one of the most exciting
opportunities for Royals. When finished the
Clubhouse project together with the floating marina
will place our Club in the position of offering
members outstanding facilities and benefits.
House and Social
Upon joining the General Committee late last year, I also
accepted the challenge of chairing the House & the Social
Committee.
Clearly the fabric of any club is its members and the ways
in which members interact is important to the value of
their membership. Having also chaired the RYCV
membership committee many, many years before, it
struck me that for the social activities of a club to be
successful, we need to truly understand and appreciate the
diversity of the membership and engage with members on
a range of appropriate and different social levels.
To achieve this, the committee itself needed to represent
the true diversity of the RYCV membership and also
contain enough members to share the, not insignificant,
workload of delivering more events. As such I was
pleased to be able to recruit additional team members who
are very committed and could focus on a broader range of
activities. Indeed the committee has doubled in size and
has the potential to grow further. We then set about
creating a diary of proposed events for the 2015 year
which would include some popular/regular events but also
added a selection of new/different events.
The other factor in my thinking is the demographic of our
membership. Only 30% (approx) of our membership lives
in what one would deem as "close proximity" to the club
(ie. in the inner Western suburbs). This is a challenge
which obviously doesn't exist at clubs like RMYS,
Brighton and Sandringham. While additional surveys are
needed to fully understand this dynamic, it may suggest
that only a minority of members will logically utilize our
club for social purposes on a regular basis.
This certainly influences our thinking but it will never
stop us from wishing to attract those members who live
over the West Gate Bridge or further afield, to engage
socially at RYCV. Indeed, as mentioned above, all
members are included in our approach and we hope that
we will see more members from all over Melbourne visit
the club on a social level more often.
Another critical aspect of our house and social activity is
the RYCV hospitality staff without whom we would not
be able to deliver any of our events. Indeed they are
responsible for delivering all of our regular events from
Opening day through to Presentation night and everything
in between. Behind the scenes they also manage and
deliver many private non member events like regular
Rotary and other community activities, weddings,
birthdays, and corporate events which derive much
needed funds for the club. We thank Glenn Smith and the
team very much for their efforts.
In the context of the above, I'm pleased to report that
many successful non-member events have been held at the
club in the past year in fact the club recorded its highest
income ever from non member/private functions which
were all managed by Helen Pelns and Glenn Smith.
Some highlights of the year so far have been:
The Juniors Movie Night - this new event was a lot of fun
for the kids and the parents! We again experienced a full
house on the final night of twilight racing, hosted another
successful Lipton Trophy Regatta and the Royals Fashion
Festival, was a huge success bringing color, style and fun
to our club in a manner not seen for many years. Our
Friday nights at the club have taken on a whole new
dimension with our Cash Prize Draw. How fantastic it has
been to see the large number of members and guests in
attendance on Friday nights enjoying a drink, some finger
food "on the house" and taking home some fantastic raffle
prizes. Of course they are also there in the hope of taking
home the "members only" cash prize which can only be
awarded if the member is present. The cash prize has
grown to reach "dizzy heights" ensuring plenty of interest
from members. We have also on occasions provided
speakers on a range of topics on Friday nights after the
draw. We have many more new events on the horizon
which we hope you will support.
All of this activity takes an extraordinary amount of time
and effort on the part of volunteers and I want to
acknowledge the team who are working hard to deliver
these events for you: Danny Trainor, Kay Watkins, Susan
Webber, Samantha Smith and Elizabeth Johnston (we
have Elizabeth to thank for the creative and colorful
House and Social
Communications
It’s been a busy year on the communications front.
We have published: two editions of ‘Royals’
magazine, fifty editions of the regular weekly e-news
(plus a bunch of special editions) and posted
numerous stories on the club’s website and facebook
page. We have also produced newsletters for the
Lipton Cup Regatta and 2015 IFDS Worlds, updated
website content and posted stories on the facebook
pages for these two events.
graphics used in our new event promotions). I'd also like to
add Gerry Cantwell to this list for his cameo appearances
as our MC on Friday nights and at other events. The H&S
team is a happy, united and committed group who are
determined to provide some fun and enjoyment for all
members.
We also wish to thank Danielle Cooper on the front desk
for her support of our committee and its activities and
Claire Fazakerly (another volunteer and General
Committee member) for helping us to communicate our
messages via e-news etc.
Our plans for a new club house are definitely still on track
and these sit with the club's Development committee.
Meanwhile we are doing what we can to preserve and
enhance the existing facilities within a sensible budget. A
recent and most welcome addition was an upgrade to our
PA /sound system.
As always your feedback on our activities or suggestions is
most welcome, please don't hesitate to speak to any
member of the H&S team. The RYCV is a strong club
with a proud history but it's the members and particularly
the volunteers who make it successful. I encourage you to
support our social activities, it's a great way to support
your club and gain even more value from your
membership.
Back in January, we migrated e-news across to a
new, more flexible, software platform. This has had a
couple of benefits. Firstly, it’s enabled some
improvements to the format and style of the
newsletter (at least in my opinion, but feedback
would be welcome). Secondly, it’s now much easier
to embed images in the newsletter, so we have made
much more use of e-news to promote Club social
events.
As the volume of Club communications grows, so
too does the workload associated with producing the
magazine and newsletters, and managing the
websites and facebook pages. The next priority is to
put the communications function on to a more
sustainable footing, by formally establishing a
dedicated Communications Sub-Committee and
recruiting more volunteers.
I would like to say thank you to Liz Johnston, Julie
Neyland and Danielle Cooper for all your hard work
over the last year. Thank you also to everyone who
contributed stories and photographs to Royals
magazine, the website, facebook and e-news
throughout the year: please keep sending them in!
Yard and Marina
The past year has been one of significant decision
making for the Club in relation to the operations of
the yard and marina. At the half yearly AGM the
membership voted not to complete the Platform Lift
Project and retain the Travel Lift as the only method
of lifting boats.
The Club has been experiencing ongoing electrical
supply problems. The Club has installed a new
internal distribution system within the Club, and we
are currently waiting on Jemena to install a new
supply connection. This is scheduled for August
2015.
This has resulted in a significant cost saving to the
Club in its development of the yard facilities. It has
also resulted in a significant increase in our
capability to store boats on the hard stand from 6 to
12 boats.
Tender responses were sought from 3 companies for
this work and SMC were the successful tenderer.
Work started in July and should be finished in late
August. Adverse weather could have some influence
on this date. The work includes a wash down area to
the south of the travel lift fingers to comply with
EPA requirements.
Surveys of the piled marina and 12m travel lift
fingers have revealed structural deterioration that
requires remedy. Work has started on repairs to the
marina and a schedule of repair work has been
prepared for the 12m travel lift finger. This work to
be completed in the next few months.
The new proposed floating marina will be a major
focus for the Club in the next 12 months. The Club
will be running information sessions to keep
members up to date with developments. I encourage
all members to attend these briefings so that
informed decisions can be made when it come to
membership voting. Proceeding with the floating
marina will be the most significant financial decision
the Club has had to make, and it will guide the
destiny of the Club for many years to come
Treasurer’s Report
Operating Result
The entity result for the financial year ended 31 st May 2015, before depreciation and one off items, was a surplus of
$412,425 and $226,612 after depreciation. The comparable results for the previous financial year were a surplus of
$547,225 before depreciation and $340,727 after depreciation.
To make meaningful comparisons with the previous financial year it is necessary to adjust for significant one off
items. During the year donations of $98,970 were received through the Australian Sports Federation, principally for
the Club House project. The comparable figure for last year was $200,000. Under accounting standards these funds
are recorded as revenue in the year they are received but are reserved for the particular project and as such need to be
deducted fro the year end result to give the accurate operating result.
When adjusted for this item the result for the year is a trading surplus of $127,642 compared with the previous year
result of $140,727
Further detail on the financial outcomes of the major activities of the club are set out below.
House Trading
The House performance dropped this year compared with last however was on par with the prior year. The opening of
the new function centre nearby negatively affecting our function revenue.
Racing and Sailing
Across the bay racing participation is down, however we managed to keep our income at a reasonable level with only
Regatta being hit significantly. The Committee continues to work hard in this area and is investigating alternative
means of charging for races. Boat maintenance was also down on the previous year.
Royals Training Centre and Cadets
It was a difficult year in Training at many clubs. The finishing of the Sailability – Next step program reduced our
income by over $30,000. Operation of the Centre has been reviewed and the club is working with other clubs to assist
them with their training needs and therefore introduce new income streams. This together with an expansion of our
member programs should see a more favourable year ahead with the operation returning to a manageable loss.
The Cadets program had a good year with the National Championships improving this area’s outcome.
The Club recognises the importance of the Training Centre and Cadets and will continue to support them as an investment
in our future.
Treasurer’s Report
Statement of Financial position (Balance Sheet)
This year there have been a number of non-typical transactions, which have an impact on the Statement of Financial
Position. These are set out in the attached accounts and notes to the accounts. The following is provided to assist with
an understanding of the impact of these transactions.
The cash holdings at the end of the financial year were $218,543 down from $668,854 at the start of the year, decrease
of $450,311. The main reason for the decrease was to fund the capital cost associated with the works on the new western
hardstand (formerly Platform Lift), power upgrade, trench, clubhouse redevelopment and new marina. The club’s
nett cash position is the lowest it has been for some years and careful management will be required if we are to avoid
the use of overdraft facilities.
Bank debt has increased from $314,060 to $521,638 being the total amount drawn down from the $1.3m facility provided
by the National Australia Bank to fund the Platform Lift. The balance of the loan facility will be drawn down
this financial year to meet the cost of the rectification works on the platform lift.
The funds advanced by members to facilitate the marina project now stand at $340,909 ex GST and are shown in the
accounts as a current liability which will be discharged against future marina charges, either as a contribution to the
purchase of a pen or in the event that the marina does not proceed an offset against future marina charges or subscriptions
for contributing members. If the marina does not proceed it will have the effect of reducing cash inflows in future
years but the impact will be spread over a number of years and will not significantly affect club operations. As at
balance date all of the advances have been expended.
Total equity has increased by $226,612 the from $2,334,791 to $2,561,403
Conclusion
The result for the financial year while down on the previous year is satisfactory. The cash position however is the lowest
it has been for a number of years and particular attention will need to be paid to managing to cash position to ensure
any overdraft is kept to a minimum.
(INCORPORATED)
NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MAY 2015
Financial Reporting Framework
The financial report covers Royal Yacht Club of Victoria as an individual entity. Royal Yacht Club of Victoria
Incorporated is an association incorporated in Victoria under the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012
(Vic).
The financial report is a general purpose financial report which has been prepared in accordance with Australian
Accounting Standards, Australian Accounting Interpretations and the Associations Incorporation Reform Act
2012 (Vic). Australian Accounting Standards set out accounting policies that the AASB has concluded would
result in a financial report containing relevant and reliable information about transactions, events and conditions
to which they apply.. Material accounting policies adopted in the preparation of this financial report are presented
below and have been consistently applied unless otherwise stated.
The financial statements, except for the cash flow information, have been prepared on an accruals basis and are
based on historical costs, modified, where applicable, by the measurement at fair value of selected non-current
assets, financial assets and financial liabilities. The amounts presented in the financial statements have been
rounded to the nearest dollar.
(a) Inventories
Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Costs are assigned on a first‐in first‐out
basis.
(b) Property, Plant and Equipment
Plant and equipment is stated at cost less accumulated depreciation and any impairment in value.
Depreciation is calculated on a straight-line basis over the estimated useful life of the asset as follows:
Plant and equipment – over 2 to 15 years
Impairment
The carrying values of plant and equipment are reviewed for impairment when events or changes in circumstances
indicate the carrying value may not be recoverable.
For an asset that does not generate largely independent cash inflows, the recoverable amount is determined for the
cash-generating unit to which the asset belongs.
If any such indication exists and where the carrying values exceed the estimated recoverable amount, the assets or
cash-generating units are written down to their recoverable amount.
The recoverable amount of plant and equipment is the greater of fair value less costs to sell and value in use. In
assessing value in use, the estimated future cash flows are discounted to their present value using a pre-tax discount
rate that reflects current market assessments of the time value of money and the risks specific to the asset.
Impairment losses (where applicable) are recognised in the income statement in the other expenses line item.

leave and other employee benefits when it is probable that settlement will be required and they are capable of being
measured reliably.
Wages and salaries, annual leave, long service leave and other employee benefits expected to be settled within 12
months, are measured at their nominal values using the remuneration rate expected to apply at the time of settlement.
Long service leave and other employee benefits which are not expected to be settled within 12 months are measured
as the present value of the estimated future cash outflows to be made by the entity in respect of services provided
by employees up to reporting date.
Club of Victoria (Incorporated) other than at normal member terms and conditions.
NOTE 19: CONTINGENT LIABILITIES
There were no contingent liabilities at 31 May 2015 that may become payable by the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria
(Incorporated).
NOTE 20: EVENTS SUBSEQUENT TO BALANCE DATE
(i) Floating Marina Development
The Club is currently evaluating project costs in respect of a proposed Floating Marina to expand and improve the
berthing and related facilities for club members. The total project costs are estimated to be in the order of
$13,200,000. It is proposed the funding for this project will be from members in the form of upfront long term
marina licenses (between the club and members) and an external borrowing facility where required. Once all project
costs and related funding and financing options have been determined, the project proposal will be put to
members at a general meeting to be convened during the course of the 2015/16 reporting year. Prior to the 31 st
May 2015, the club has received prepaid marina license/fees amounting to $340,909.01 (exc. GST). These prepaid
amounts are voluntary payments on the part of members to assist the club in the preliminary costs of evaluation
of the project. If the project is adopted by members then these prepayments will be attributed as license fees
relating to the new marina. Should the project not proceed, these prepayments will be treated as contributions
towards current club membership/marina fees over several years to ensure adequate cash flow for the Club.
(ii) Club House Development
The Club has evaluated the costs and related funding for the redevelopment of its Club House. The project is
estimated to cost in the order of $4-5 million. The Club has subsequently been offered donation to cover the entire
project by Mr. Nigel Peck AM. A project team has been put together to ensure the facility is the best possible
for the Club.
(iii) New Western Hardstand (former Platform Lift Area) and Wash down
The members voted on 27 th February 2015 and amended this slightly at a meeting on 20 th June 2015 to replace
the platform lift area with a Travel lift operation. SMC marine was awarded the Tender and commenced work on
this project in July 2015. The proposal is to concrete all the area and make safe the platform lift pit with a view to
capping this at a future date with a deck strong enough to take a travel lift operation.
This project will be financed through drawdown of the loan facility ($1,300,000) provided by the National Australia
Bank and $350,000 from the club’s cash reserves.
As the outcome of the project will have substantially different financial benefit to the club from that initially envisaged
the holding value of the asset in the clubs accounts will need to be reassessed. A formal assessment of the
asset value will be undertaken when the project is completed and independent advice sought to determine an appropriate
carrying value. A substantial write down on the cost of the asset is anticipated.
(a) Interest Rate Risk
Exposure to interest rate risk arises on financial assets and financial liabilities recognised at the end of the reporting
period whereby a future change in interest rates will affect future cash flows or the fair value of fixed rate financial
instruments. The association is exposed to earnings volatility on floating rate instruments. The financial
instruments that expose the association to interest rate risk are limited to the secured flexible rate loan facility
(refer Note 11) and cash at bank.
(b) Credit Risk
The maximum exposure to credit risk, excluding the value of any collateral or other security, at balance date to
recognised financial assets is the carrying amount of those assets, net of any provisions for doubtful debts, as disclosed
in the statement of financial position and notes to the financial report.
The club does not have any material credit risk exposure to any single debtor or group of debtors under financial
instruments entered into by the club.
(c) Net Fair Values
For other assets and other liabilities the net fair value approximates their carrying value.
The aggregate net fair values and carrying amount of financial assets and financial liabilities are disclosed in the
statement of financial position and in the notes to the financial statements.
INDEPENDENT AUDIT REPORT
TO THE MEMBERS OF
ROYAL YACHT CLUB OF VICTORIA
(INCORPORATED)
Report on the Financial Report
I have audited the accompanying financial report of the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria Incorporated (‘the Club”)
for the year ended 31 st May 2015 as set out on pages 35 to 53.
Committee’s Responsibility for the Financial Report
The committee of the club is responsible for the preparation of the financial report that gives a true and fair view
in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards (including Australian Accounting Interpretations) and the
Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 (Vic) and for such internal control as the committee determines is
necessary to enable the preparation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due
to fraud or error.
Auditor’s Responsibility
My responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on my audit. My audit has been conducted
in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Those standards require that I comply with relevant
ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance
whether the financial report is free from material misstatement.
An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial
report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgement, including the assessment of the risks
of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments,
the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation of the financial report that gives a true
and fair view in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose
of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating
the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by
the committee, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report.
I believe that the audit evidence I have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for my audit
opinion.
Independence
In conducting my audit, I have complied with the independence requirements of Australian professional ethical
pronouncements.
Audit Opinion
In my opinion, the financial report of the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria Incorporated is in accordance with the
requirements of the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 (Vic) including:
i) giving a true and fair view of the financial position of the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria
Incorporated as at 31 st May 2015 and of its performance for the year then ended on that date; and
ii) complying with Australian Accounting Standards as disclosed in Note 1.
