Editor’s Message
Kari strutt,
newsletter editor
Dear Readers:
The season is giving is rapidly
approaching. I’m starting off the
season by giving up my editorial
space. This month I’m turning it over
to the Karma Sisters, Willow Park
residents who posted this thoughtful piece on their website.
(karmasisters.com/inspiration)
My kids attend a small elementary school with just one class per
grade. It’s safe to say that after a couple of years there, it feels
like you know pretty much every family. And, for better or for
worse, much of their business. Well.
Last week our little group ventured out for our Terry Fox Walk.
The principal handed out “I’m running for...” stickers, which the
students pasted onto their shirts. I noticed an array of sweet
dedications:
...my grandpa
...my aunt
...Terry Fox
...my friend’s dog
...all people who have cancer
Along the way, I walked beside a very quiet little boy, about
five years old and easily the smallest child on the walk. It was
swelteringly hot, and he was dressed in a dark, long-sleeve shirt
and pants. I fully admit that my first thought was superior and
judgmental: Seriously, what careless mother sends her son out
in 27 degrees - wearing this! As we stopped so I could roll up
his sleeves, I noticed his sticker.
...for my little brother.
I tried to chat with him but between the heat, his fatigue, and
my feeling like a complete heel for being so quick to judge,
we fell into silence. Pressing this old soul for details felt too
intrusive.
As we neared the end of the walk, I watched him light up and
run to a young woman who was just arriving. She scooped him
up, hugged him hard, and held him in her arms to the finish.
I imagine she must have
tried her hardest to be on
time for this event.
She’s a mother I’ve seen
often at school but I never
actually met. Already
emotional over Terry Fox,
tears sprung behind my
sunglasses as I felt ashamed
for my assumptions. Watching her with her son, I was reminded
that we just never know who walks alongside us, silently dealing
with a world of pain that we can’t begin to understand.
I have some work to do to make empathy my first instinct,
rather than a rush to judge.
You just. Never. Know.
Thanks for the reminder, Karma Sisters. An open heart and
an open mind are precious gifts.
Best, Kari
Erin McLeod Wows the Soccer Crowd
An awestruck Riley
Arseneau waits in line
for an autograph
On Friday October 12, the goal-keeper for Canada's
Bronze medal women's soccer team (Erin McLeod)
wowed the next generation of Olympians at the
WillowRidge Community Association.
Erin was a gracious story-teller, generously offering up
her personal experiences (the difficult as well as the
good) to a capacity crowd. Her stories of hard work,
and perseverance in the face of doubt elicited smiles
as well as a few tears.
But really, the spirit of the evening can be summed
up in the often smiling, sometime awestruck faces
pictured here.
Thanks to Francine Morrison for putting this fantastic
evening in place.
One of our neighborhood schools,
St. William Elementary, is happy to
announce the arrival of a new principal, Mr.
Bruce Campbell. Mr. Campbell has more
than sixteen years experience in school
guidance and administration and this is his
first assignment as Principal. I met with
Mr. Campbell to find out how the year is
shaping up.
“Well...what have we done already?”
Then his list unfolds:
• A Welcome Back Bar-B-Que
• Opening Mass with Fr. Frank
• Terry Fox Fundraiser Walk
• Family Science Fun Night with 25
engineers and geologists from APEGA
Mr. Campbell smiles as he recites the list,
but his face really lights up when he starts
talking about ‘We Day’.
“It’s a youth empowerment event. Thousands of students from the Calgary area get
together to listen to some inspirational speakers. This year we had Mikhail Gorbachev,
Theoren Fleury, Rick Hanson, Amanda Lindhout...the list goes on. The kids’ reaction
was phenomenal. ‘It was awesome!’ was the most common response to the day. I
think this event really inspired our grade sixes to go out and help in their community by
supporting local service projects.”
Mr. Campbell also offers up a broad smile when he talks the results of the recent
Provincial Achievement tests. “Once again, the kids at St. William did a great job. We
scored well above the provincial average in all the areas. Anyone who’s interested can
see the results on our school website.”
Our interview ends with the obligatory photo shoot, but before we part company Mr.
Campbell offers the last word. “We are going to have a great year. Please tell your
readers that all students are welcome here at St. William. Stop in for a tour...or call me
with your questions. I’d be delighted to hear from you.”
On behalf of the Community, welcome Mr. Campbell!
Seniors’
Stories
My father and my Uncle Jimmy served in the Merchant Navy during WWII and
hMS hood in Battle
did the Murmansk suicide run to Russia with supplies and food for the Russian
people. The waters were infested with German U-boats trying to stop these runs
and resulted in the largest number of human lives lost in the Merchant Navy. My
Uncle Alec served on the most famous battleship in the Royal Navy; the hMS
hood, during WWII. The Hood was brought in for refuelling and repairs and Uncle
Alec was transferred to another ship. The Hood was later sunk by the Bismarck,
and there were only three survivors. My Uncle lost many friends that day. After the
Bismarck sank the Hood, Churchill and all of Britain said “SINK THE BISMARCK”.
The mighty Royal Navy put every ship available to sea to destroy the Bismarck. My
Uncle Richard served with the Seaforth Highlanders during WWII and was wounded
in Sicily. Doctors wanted to amputate his leg and he refused to allow them to do so. He is still walking on the same leg today. My
oldest son Brian served 12 years in the Royal Navy. He served on several ships, one of which was a nuclear sub, and spent three
months under the Arctic ice. ~ Robert
was born November, 1928 in Czechoslovakia but in 1938 Hitler changed the name of my area to Sudetenland. The war with
I Germany was on and when the war was over things were very tense in my area and in 1948 at night, with my sweetheart on my
shoulders I waded across the waist deep river into West Germany. That 8 minute walk in the water was very scary. It meant death
if we were caught.
June 10, 1953 we were married in West Germany then came by ship to Canada landing in Quebec. What a dreadful trip. On that
boat I was sick for nine days and went down to 90 pounds. We took a train across Canada to Medicine Hat then another train to
Lethbridge, settling near Lethbridge where for three years I worked on a sugar beet farm.
Coal Mine in Drumheller
We then moved to the Yukon where I did hard rock mining
for silver. Then back to Alberta where I worked in the
Drumheller coal mines. They had about 100 men working
in the mines. The mine had a shaft with a cage that took you
down into the mine. The cage took only 8 men down or up at
a time. I did this underground mining during the winter, and
then we moved on to Calgary where I spent 35 years with
Consolidated Concrete.
We became Canadian citizens and 20 years after coming to Canada I went back to East Germany where I was now allowed in and
out as I was a Canadian. I was happy to be able to visit relatives who are now all gone.
We have been married for 59 years and it is sad that I had to put my darling into a Nursing Home, where I visit most days and then
sometimes go on to play bingo at Grey Eagle. The nights are very lonely as we have no children, having lost our only child through a
miscarriage. The friendly bingo players and volunteers help ease my lonely burden. ~ Ewarld Peeterschick
It was an eventful back to school season for École St. Cecilia
School this fall.
St. Cecilia kicked off the school year with a highly attended back
to school BBQ. Parents were able to meet their child’s teacher
and St. Cecilia families were able to reconnect after a long
summer.
In September, Summit Kids launched their new Out-of-School
campus at St. Cecilia to provide quality before and after school
care for our students. After an extensive search for an out-ofschool
care provider, St. Cecilia chose Summit Kids. They pride
themselves on offering a nurturing environment, innovative
learning opportunities and enriched programming for the
students in their care. Summit Kids offers a variety of programs
for students from kindergarten to grade six from the hours of
7:00am to 6:00pm. For more information, visit their website at
www.summitkids.ca.
This fall École St. Cecilia School entered its second year with
the Hockey Canada Skills Academy. The program is being
offered to all students from Grades 4-6 regardless of skill and
involves two on-ice sessions and on dry land training session
per week. The goal of the program is to develop leadership
skills, promote physical activity and to encourage each student
to grow academically and athletically. St. Cecilia is the first
Catholic French Immersion elementary school in Calgary to
offer the program.
With a start like this, the 2012-2013 school year promises to be
another rewarding year for the students and families of École St.
Cecilia School.
During the month of October, Mapleridge Cooperative
wonderful costumes, yummy treats, fun games and crafts made
it a great success. Thank you to everyone who helped out.
Also, the four-year- olds got lost and eventually found while
navigating their way through the giant corn labyrinths at The
heading home on the big yellow school bus.
This month at MCP, the four-year-olds will enter the amazing
world of dinosaurs, while the three-year-olds will be exploring
colours and shapes. We have planned another fieldtrip for the
4-year-old classes to visit Fish Creek Library. The children will
learn about good library manners, where to find books, and
how to borrow books.
Each November, the students of Mapleridge Cooperative
Preschool receive a customized school t-shirt that they printed
their names on. Students proudly wear it to school and on
special fieldtrips. It also makes a treasured keepsake. Mrs.
We would like to thank all the families
who took part in our annual pumpkin carving night. We had a
fantastic time making spooky and kooky jack-o-lanterns.
November is going to be a zoo as our students learn all about
animals. Our four year olds will be talking about animals that
live in the jungle, in the water, in the cold, and in the forest.
They will be making lions, monkeys, whales, penguins, polar
bears, and owls, exploring animal tracks and leaning about
hibernation.
Our three year olds will be having fun with farm animals and
pets. They will be making sheep, pigs, mice, fish, and a turtle as
well as learning about how to take care of cats and dogs.
responsible gifting
Do you think a family member or
friend would benefit from having a
cat or dog in his or her life? Before
you go ahead and buy that special
someone a pet, consider a gift
certificate instead!
Since cats and dogs are like people in that they all have unique
personalities and needs, we suggest that you purchase a gift
certificate from Animal &Bylaw Services. With gift certificates,
the recipients can choose a pet that they and any other
members of the household feel comfortable with. They
enable the beneficiaries to choose cats or dogs that will fit with
their lifestyle.
Potential pet owners need to find a pet that is the right size,
whose activity level and personality complements the family’s
and whose needs can be met in terms of time and costs.
Taurus Taekwon-Do
231 Forge Road SE Calgary
I’ve recently had my two girls join Taurus
Taekwon-Do on 231 Forge Road SE and
was pleasantly surprised at how amazing
this business is. So impressed, that I, as the
publisher of this newsletter, wanted to do a write up on their
program to hopefully help bring awareness of the exciting and
inspiring methods and training Taurus TKD offers their clients.
Below is my interview with Owner and operator, Mr. Robert
Joseph Scott.
Q: Why did you start Taurus TKD?
A: I was cut from the Varsity Volley Ball Team in Grade 11 and
was introduced to TKD by a good friend of mine who hid his
interest as to not get teased. He quit and picked up a guitar
while I stayed with it.
Q: With so many Martial Arts Studios in Calgary, what
does Taurus TKD offer that no one else does?
A: Experience. Two time coach for Team Canada (Australia
2006/ Puerto Rico 2009). One on One black belt instruction for
beginners. Disciplined yet relaxed family atmosphere. Knowledge.
Over 20 years instructing experience. 6th Degree Black
Belt. Instructed seminars in Canada, U.S., Malaysia, Singapore.
Q: What makes your classes work?
A: We teach a wide variety of kicking and punching techniques:
Sparring Drills, Self Defence and Bag Work. We pay particular
attention to Body Mechanics and Pattern Technique. We are
science based. We explain the tool, purpose and method of
each technique clearly for proper application.
Q: how long should someone stay with the program?
A: Taurus TKD has a high success rate which accounts for
our many black belts, instructors and assistant instructors. A
student should stay in the program for as long as they feel they
are achieving their goals, whether it be losing weight, learning
self defence, or achieving the rank of black belt.
Well...all I have to say is that my girls absolutely LOVE going to
Taurus Taekwon-Do. They are having a blast and gaining so much
strength both inside and out...and to me, that’s what counts!
Pumpkins are withering on front
are being replaced by skiffs of
snow. As the days shorten and
the mercury dips, there are
few things more tempting than
curling up in an easy chair with a
blanket, cup of hot cocoa at your
elbow and a pile of books beside you. But with our busy lives,
it’s often hard to find that kind of time. It’s especially tough for
children, whose after-school hours are often packed with sports
and lessons.
Calgary Reads has a few suggestions to help you keep your child
engaged in reading, by using daily activities as an opportunity to
sneak in some reading.
Read store signs and road signs. Read the cereal box at the
breakfast table. Bake cookies, after reading the recipe, of
course! Keep some books in the car to read on the way to
lessons or sports. For a treat, listen to books on CD or tape.
Have a family games night and read the instructions. Read
comic books. Use internet sites like CBC Kids, Kids Reads
and Funbrain.com. And of course, have plenty of books in
your home, which you can borrow from the public and school
libraries.
SANTA’S CHOICE
TOO!
‘TWAS THE MONTH BEFORE CHRISTMAS
‘Twas the month before Christmas when all through the spa
all the workers were working - it was all so bizarre.
The stockings were hung in the village with care
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.
When out the spa door there arose such a clatter,
We sprang from our work to see what was the matter.
Away to the window we flew like a flash,
Tore open the blinds and threw up the sash.
When what to our wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer.
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
We knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
He whistled, and shouted, and called out so clear,
“We need gifts from your spa, as Christmas is near!
For the feet! For the hands! For the bodies! The hair!
They need to know how much we all care!”
He spoke not a word, but went straight to the task,
Buying manicures, pedicures, massages and masques.
So jolly, so happy he was done in a flash!
Then he sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle...
And away they all flew, like the down of a thistle.
But we heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight,
“Merry Christmas to all,and to
all a Good Night!”
On REMEMBRANCE DAY members of the armed forces (soldiers) are
commemorated. The other common name for this day is Armistice Day which
marks the date and time when armies in general stop fighting. November 11th
at 11am in 1918 (the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month)
marks the end of the first world war in the UK - this date and time was made into
Remembrence Day in commonwealth countries.
The poppy's significance to Remembrance Day is a result of Canadian military
physician John McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields. The poppy emblem was chosen because of the poppies that bloomed across some
of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their red colour an appropriate symbol for the bloodshed of trench warfare. A
Frenchwoman, Anna E. Guérin, introduced the widely used artificial poppies given out today. Some people choose to wear white
poppies, which emphasises a desire for peaceful alternatives to military action.
Senior Pet Care
With Dr. Lori Keeler
Thanks to advances in veterinary medicine, pets are living longer. As
pets reach the golden years, there are a variety of conditions and
diseases that they can face, including weight and mobility changes,
arthritis, kidney, heart and liver disease, tumors and cancers,
hormone disorders such as diabetes and thyroid imbalance and
many others. Its critical for pet owners to work closely with their
veterinarian to devise a health plan that is best for their senior pet.
When Does “Senior” Start?: Smaller dog breeds live longer than
larger breeds, and cats live longer than dogs. Because of this, larger
breeds can be considered “senior” by the age of 5, whereas smaller
dogs can be considered senior by the age of 7 or 8. Cats can be
considered senior at about age 10. Keep in mind that every year
for a dog or cat is equivalent to 5-7 human years.
Signs Of A Problem:
• Increase in water consumption or urination
• Sudden weight loss or gain
• Decrease in appetite or not eating for more than 2 days
• Significant increase in appetite
• Repeated vomiting
• Diarrhea for more than 3 days
• Difficulty in passing stools or urine
• Lameness
• Decrease in vision
• Skin sores
• Foul breath or drooling
• Increase in time spent sleeping
• Hair loss
• Excessive panting
• Inability to chew dry food
• Persistent coughing or gagging
• Breathing heavily or rapidly at rest
• Lumps that have appeared suddenly or are growing
If your pet is exhibiting any other these symptoms, call our office at
403-278-9311.
Senior Health Exams: Senior care, which starts with the regular
veterinary exam, is needed to catch and delay the onset or progress
of disease and for the early detection of problems. During the senior
health exam, the veterinarian will conduct a complete examination
of all your pet’s body systems and ask you a series of questions
regarding any changes in your pets appetite, activity or behavior.
Laboratory Testing: Lab tests help us to determine the status of
your pets internal organs. Subtle changes in these lab results, even
in the outwardly healthy pet, may signal presence of an underlying
disease. During the senior years, we recommend lab tests every
year for healthy dogs and cats. At minimum, we perform the
following tests:
- Complete blood count. This common test measures the number
of red and white blood cells and platelets. The numbers and types
of these cells can help diagnose anemia, infections and leukemia.
- urinalysis. Detects presence of substances that normally do
not appear in the urine, such as protein, sugar, white blood cells
or blood. It can assist in the diagnosis of urinary tract infections,
diabetes, kidney disease, bladder stones.
- Blood chemistry panel. The information helps to determine
how various organs are functioning. It can assist with the diagnosis
of kidney, liver, pancrease and thyroid disease.
Additional tests might be recommended depending on your
individual pet’s condition. These include x-rays, feline leukemia/feline
immunodeficiency virus test in cats, blood pressure evaluation, urine
protein evaluation, ultrasound, cytological analysis of lumps. These
tests become especially important in the senior pet that show signs of
sickness or are being prepared for anesthesia and surgery.
We are here to help your pet head into the twilight years with ease.
Alberta’s annual influenza immunization program will kick off
Oct.15, and Albertans are encouraged to take advantage of the
universal program once again. Similar to last year, the influenza
vaccine will be offered free of charge to all Albertans six months
immunization clinics, as well as through some pharmacists and
physician offices. A nasal spray vaccine (FluMist) will also be
available for the first time this year, targeted towards eligible
children between two and 17 years of age. While immunization
is recommended for all Albertans, individuals at high risk for
severe complications related to influenza (including children
between the ages of six and 23 months, anyone over 65 years
of age, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic medical
conditions, including severe obesity), are encouraged to be
It’s November, and now I can truly
confirm that my Ward 14 Communities
BBQ was a huge success. September
22nd was a gorgeous, sunny, fall
day. Those of us who were on our feet, moving around, can
certainly attest to how warm it was. In fact, it was the first day
of fall and it was a great one to start the new season off on.
Congratulations to David Woo, Walt Matthies, Nicolle Tokarek,
Lenore Wilson, and Joan Corcoran who were all Ward 14
Communities Prize Draw winners.
By my calculation, we had almost 1500 people attend on that
beautiful day. Spirited line dancers entertained us with their
performance, classic car owners came for a Show & Shine,
MLAs Jeff Wilson, Rick Fraser, and the Honourable Jonathan
Denis came to mingle with their constituents, and there was
even an appearance by the Mayor of this amazing city. There
were fourteen City of Calgary Business Units, the Calgary
Public Library, the Police on horseback, in a squad car, and on
motorcycles, and a HAWCS helicopter fly-by. Thank you so
much to everyone who took time out of their day to attend.
All those people needed to be fed, and although I’ve mentioned
it before, those who provided and cooked the food made such
a substantial sacrifice I think they deserve a second mention.
M&M Meat Shops - with two locations in Ward 14 (in Willow
Park Village, and Deer Valley Shopping Centre) - provided
delicious burgers and yummy peach juice for everyone in
attendance. They did the bulk of the cooking and serving. Cobs
Bread of Willow Park Village and Calgary Co-op of Deer Valley
Shopping Centre donated all the fresh buns we needed, and
they were delicious too. Finally, the Safeway (located right in
the Southcentre Mall complex) donated a variety of beverages
for everyone to enjoy. I can’t thank these local businesses
enough for ensuring that we were all fed!
The point of the Ward 14 Communities BBQ was to get more
people aware of and involved with their local Community
Associations. Each Community Association was able to give
away memberships for free on the day of the BBQ because of
funds donated by generous, community-minded businesses.
Southcentre Mall not only provided the location, but also
funding. Canyon Creek Toyota, Jack Carter Chevrolet Cadillac,
and Southgate Chevrolet Buick GMC were all major sponsors
of the event. I hope you were able to meet them and have
a look at their fine products. Frontier Project Management,
Genstar Development Company, Totem Building Supplies, Trico
Homes, and United Communities also stepped up as sponsors.
Ward 14’s Community Associations were able to increase their
membership and put we put thousands of NON-taxpayer
dollars to their benevolent work because of these corporate
sponsors.
Again I would like to leave off by thanking the volunteers from
Ward 14 Community Associations. From the management
of community facilities, to the watchful eye they keep on
local development, to the sense of community they provide,
Community Associations deserve our thanks.
I have used a lot of ink talking about the Ward 14 Communities
BBQ over the past few months. That is because I feel very
strongly about the communities that make up Ward 14, but
I want you to know that if there is any other issue that you
would like to speak with me about, I am always here to listen.
I can be contacted by phone at (403) 268-1653 or by email at
