MENTORING THE FUTURE
An encouraging role model can have a profound effect on a young person’s self-esteem and aspirations.
The EBP works with mentors from a range of Lincolnshire businesses who are all making a huge difference
by offering a small amount of their time to mentoring.
The EBP spoke to three of its mentors about their motivation to help and inspire young people.
Name: Flight Lieutenant Tom Bould
Job Title: Red 6 - Synchro Leader
Organisation: Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team
Programme: Project Lumen
Q: What made you want to become a mentor for The EBP?
As Red Arrows pilots we are very fortunate to be in a position to inspire the next
generation which is something I think is incredibly important. If we can encourage
someone to take an interest in STEM subjects, aviation, follow a career in the military
or challenge themselves to do something they didn’t think was possible, then this is
something we take great pride in.
Q: Did you have any mentors growing up or was there a particular person that
influenced your career choice?
I had teachers at school who were very knowledgeable about career choices but we
had a RAF liaison officer who visited my school who was the most influential; he
explained what opportunities were available at the time to pursue a career in the
Forces and aviation. I feel very fortunate in the career I have and being part of the
Red Arrows; I firmly believe that it was the advice I received when I was younger that
put me on the path to achieving my goals.
Name: John Latham FRSA
Job Title: Director of Deputy Vice Chancellor Projects
Organisation: University of Lincoln
Programme: Mini Exec Club
Q: What did you get out of your involvement in the Mini Exec Club?
It was good to share my work with someone who was keen to learn and see what the
world of work was actually about – and seeing their perceptions change is rewarding.
Q: What advice would you give to prospective mentors?
Embrace the challenge! Don’t be concerned if you think what you do won’t interest
a young person, it almost certainly will. Also, listen to what they get out of the
experience, it may surprise you and their perception might help you to look at your
role in a different way.
Name: Vincent Ramsey
Job Title: Partnerships & Recruitment Officer
Organisation: Access to Music
Programme: Mission Mentor
Q: What are you hoping to get out of the mentoring experience?
I hope to get a much clearer picture of what the needs are of young people from all
aspects of life. It will help me in dealing with them, whilst at the same time I hope
that I can give some guidance back to them.
Q: Why do you think mentoring will make a difference to a young person?
I hope that I can assist in helping someone find their way in what they want to do,
give encouragement, as well as a dose of realism where necessary. It would be nice
to think they could use me as a ‘sounding board’, and hopefully, in return, receive
impartial advice.
