Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Leading Amsterdam-based global design and consultancy firm, Arcadis, recently ranked the Delhi- Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) second among 10 of the highest-value construction projects in 2017. Valued at around $100 billion, it ranks next to the world’s top construction project, the One Belt, One Road (worth $150 billion), which stretches from China to Central Asia. The DMIC corridor – spread across a length of 1,500 km with growth on both sides of the artery of about 150 to 200 km – is India’s most ambitious infrastructure programme. It aims to develop new industrial townships as Smart Cities and converging next generation technologies across infrastructure sectors. Nirmala Sitharaman, India’s commerce and industry minister notes that the first phase of the DMIC will see the development of eight industrial cities, out of a total of 24 investment nodes that have been identified for development. Environment clearances are obtained after due consultation process with various stakeholders including local and municipal bodies, points out the minister. And work is implemented only after notification of these plans and clearances. DMIC is to be implemented in three phases, with the first one to be completed by 2025 and the final one by 2040. Work is on in full swing in several places. In Gujarat, for instance, the state government is determined to complete the 558- km stretch in the state by next year. Boosting industrial growth Nitin Patel, the deputy chief minister of the state, says the DMIC will further boost the state’s industrial growth. Indian Railways and the state government will share costs for building 141 railway over-bridges to ensure the smooth functioning of the new corridor, he adds. International aerospace major Airbus will be a strategic partner of the DMIC to set up an aviationcentred economic zone at the Dholera Special Investment Region in Gujarat, one of the eight smart cities coming up in the phase of the project. According to the DMIC, Airbus is assessing the region and will provide inputs on the requirements and infrastructure specifications for setting up the cluster, especially for developing an ecosystem of suppliers for the assembly, testing, delivery and maintenance of rotary and fixed wing aircraft, including naval utility helicopters. 38
