Dear neighbours
Welcome to your local magazine
And what a night it was. The culmination of a
huge amount of hard work came to its glittering
conclusion last month at the #Artskickers Awards
ceremony at The Stage in Shoreditch.
Our judges, including Olivier Award-winning
actress Denise Gough, artist Gavin Turk and poet
Lemn Sissay, turned up in their finery and a great
night was had by all. We were entertained by
Hackney singers Amaria Braiithwaite and Nesah
Gonzales (without doubt stars of the future), as
well as the brilliant Hackney Empire Community
Choir and Project Insrumental.
Our hugely entertaining emcee Kat B (you'll
recognise him from the Hackney Empire pantos)
did the winners and nominees proud. The night
was a huge success and LoveEast is very proud to
have been part of it.
worthy winner of the Community Superhero
The Artskickers Awards
#
A superhero
on a mission
Core Arts harnesses creativity and gives its members the chance to engage with those who have similar interests
Sophie Baggott talks Paul Monks, Core Arts founder and
winner of the #Artskickers Community Superhero award
It’s 25 years since the artist Paul Monks came
face to face, by chance, with what he now sees as
the true purpose of art. In 1992 his organisation,
Core Arts, was born in a dusty, vacant space
within Hackney Hospital and is now decades into
its work promoting positive mental health and
wellbeing through creative learning.
This year Core Arts was voted
'Community Superhero (organisation)'
at the #Artskickers Awards – and a
worthier winner is hard to imagine.
In true superheroic style, Paul saw
the award as a tool to broaden the
scope of Core Arts’ public profile. “It’s
always great to be able to highlight
the arts’ value, especially at times when
they’re not as supported,” Paul said. “We
need a constant drip feed to get our message
out there, which has a knock-on effect for
fundraising.”
Sharing the potential of the arts is all-important
to the founder, who added: “It’s a continuous
education for those who can make a difference
to Core Arts: to help them see the power of the
arts.”
On arriving in Hackney a quarter of a century ago,
Paul was an artist seeking a reason for the
arts. The result of this search was, in his
own words, “totally unexpected”. He
happened to meet a few long-term
psychiatric patients while working in
his Hackney Hospital-based studio,
which swiftly grew into a haven
for curious patients to express
themselves creatively away from the
grind of the psychiatric ward.
“They gave me a new interest in creativity,”
Paul said, who views Core Arts as running with
a mutual dynamic between members and
co-ordinators. “We all have common goals,” he
observed. The organisation not only harnesses
6 LOVEEAST

The Artskickers Awards
#
the creative streak in its members (whether
that’s in art, music or writing) but, vitally, gives
everybody the chance to engage with those who
have similar interests.
“The organisation lets our members share with
each other what they’re doing,” Paul explained. “As
long as you’ve got an honest endeavour, there’s
an opportunity to find what’s right for you.”
Core Arts holds fantastic exhibitions and events
to display the creations. “Members’ creativity is
often just in the moment and the result could be
forgotten,” he said. “They might sit and write a rap,
then simply put the piece of paper aside.”
Before founding Core Arts, Paul had been
teaching in a girls’ school, where he noticed
the students were under constant pressure to
achieve – piling an immense amount of stress
onto them. He perceived this environment as a
total contrast to his encounters with patients in
Hackney Hospital, where creativity seemed to flow
in a more spontaneous way.
Paul Monks chatting to Deborah Curtis (founder of House of
Fairy Tales) at the Artskickers Awards party (see overleaf)
“We want to convert our space into a centre
of excellence,” he said. “Our vision is what our
members want, not what we might think they do.”
Look out for future events at corearts.co.uk
You're a step away from a
better quality of life
and health
Paul becomes emotional when talking of the
many former Core Arts members who now tour
the country as advocates of the arts. “It’s amazing
when people pop in and explain what it meant to
them,” he said. The organisation has developed
from a dozen people to 770 as of last year, and
Core Arts often have to turn away would-be
members.
“The timetable has grown to 70 workshops a
week,” Paul said. The organisation is all about
improving quality constantly, aiming for the
highest possible quality of teaching and a brilliant
service. “Our board trustees are mainly current
or ex-members,” he mentioned, adding that they
often attend workshops so as to have a fully
hands-on approach.
Building Crafts College
Stonemason Nancy Peskett
shows Christine Preisig
around the Stratford centre
Stonework, historic repairs and conservation
have always fascinated Nancy Peskett,
a stonemason and teacher at the
Building Crafts College in Stratford.
Tired of the mainly computerbased
work at the architect’s
practice, Nancy contemplated
changing careers. When the
credit crunch hit the profession
in 2009, she felt it was time to try
out something new and decided to
specialise in stonework.
Her starting point was a year long, full-time
diploma in stonemasonry at the college. She
then went on and refined her skills working for
a small company while also developing her own
work.
Nancy immediately felt at home at the college as
a student and was excited to go back when she
was offered a job as a stonemasonry tutor. Now
she combines teaching there with her own work.
10 LOVEEAST
The college was founded in the 17th century by
the Worshipful Company of Carpenters, a City
livery company that trained young people in
building crafts and conservation. To this day, the
college has a national reputation for excellence
in providing education in carpentry, joinery,
stonemasonry, modern site construction and
historic building conservation.
In the bright and spacious workshops
there’s a spirited buzz in the air
that’s created by the working
rhythm of the students and their
tools. The college introduces
its students to machinery but
the focus is on developing their
manual skills.
“Most tutors would agree that the
value of the hand work is enormous,”
Nancy says.
The student body is broad, spanning diverse
backgrounds and ages. At this time, students are
between 16 and 67. “It’s a really healthy mix and it
creates a unique atmosphere,” Nancy says.
The study programmes include apprenticeships
for young people, full and part-time diploma
courses – for both young and adult learners who
might be changing careers or want to specialise

East London makers
in one particular skill – and specialist courses for
experienced students.
The college also offers popular evening classes
in wood and stone carving, letter cutting and
woodwork that are aimed at beginners who want
to try out one of those crafts.
What Nancy likes about teaching as well as
creating her own stone pieces is the process of a
project, not just the end result.
As a teacher she loves seeing a student progress
and become independent. As a stonemason she’s
fascinated how every project is different.
She needs to push her skills each time she takes
one on, as there is always something new – the
stone, the technique or the building she’s working
on.
A River Lea walk
Simon Myers
Best kept secret in the East
Ruth Keating
If you fancy a very East London
day trip this summer, head
south by foot or bike to explore
the rapidly changing lower River
Lea.
Access is improving all the
time and you can now enjoy
a gentle potter past a mix
of green scenic stretches,
intriguing industrial heritage
and brand new housing
developments all the way from
Hackney Wick and the Queen
Sally Ramsden takes a walk along the
ever-changing River Lea
Elizabeth Olympic Park to the
Thames.
South of Three Mills the river
turns tidal. It’s wilder here and
much more unpredictable than
the tranquil, canal-like waters
further north.
Just before Bow Creek,
instead of turning west onto
the Limehouse Cut towards
Canary Wharf, head along the
eastern banks of the Lea via
the new ramp at Twelve Trees
Crescent and the latest stretch
of the Leaway path.
Persist south past a couple
of large distribution centres
and you’ll know you’ve arrived
somewhere unusual when
you encounter an in-your-face
Damien Hirst art piece.
regeneration project with a
remarkable ability to garner
support from all quarters.
Five years ago the picture
here on the Newham side of
the Lea couldn’t have been
more different. Instead of
the colourful boats, enticing
community gardens, gallery
space and pop-up café of today,
all you would have seen at Cody
Dock was a patch of polluted
wasteland littered with old
shipping containers.
Since then the lost dock and
surrounding land have been
transformed by hundreds of
volunteers into a haven for
ecology, creative endeavour
and, on Sunday mornings,
wellbeing activities, all with a
backdrop of sweeping views.
‘Sensation’ marks the
entrance to Cody Dock,
a gem of a community
There’s a community boat being
refitted ready for launching
this autumn and ambitious
Oliver Savory
long-term plans for studios for
creative enterprise, a visitor
centre, industrial heritage
archive and new moorings.
The organisation behind this
vibrant initiative, the Gasworks
Development Partnership
(GDP), is leading the way in the
kind of redevelopment that will
increase rather than detract
from the unique character of
the lower Lea.
Recent funding from the
National Lottery, Thames Water
and The Big Issue Foundation
means GDP can now take
things to the next stage and
Cody Dock looks set to become
a highly distinctive creative
quarter.
Meanwhile, the Leaway path on
the eastern shore of London’s
second river is on course to
continue to the Thames next
year.
For now, go up the road past
Star Lane DLR for a pleasant
riverside pit stop in Bow Ecology
Park and from here, it’s a short
stroll to Canning Town.
You can cross to the ‘island’,
surrounded by water on
three sides, to admire the
new buildings which the Royal
Ballet are soon to make home.
From here it’s a short walk to
Trinity Buoy Wharf featuring the
Thames' only lighthouse, art
installations, views of Greenwich
and two excellent eateries.
Sally Ramsden runs, mind,
body and nature wellbeing
sessions at Cody Dock, Sundays
10-12am. Next dates: 14 May,
9 and 30 July. £7/£5 advance
We‘ve been going for over
20 years and are open every
Tuesday night.
We get between 60 and 120
people each time. They have
a good pint or a glass of wine
while listening to some fantastic
music.
As one supporter commented,
"As a club, you offer pretty
much all anyone could ask for.
Great and varied music, friendly
patrons and reasonably priced
beers and spirits. Well worth
the treck over from Camberwell.
Keep up the good work guys!"
What if you’re not into jazz that
much?
Its always hard to explain to
people who are not into jazz
just how good our concerts
are but our performers have
played with Jamie Cullum, Van
Morrison, Jools Holland and
Sting.
They’ve sold out Carnegie Hall,
they’ve backed Eric Clapton one
night and played at the club the
next.
But if jazz really isn't your thing,
you’ll be very welcome at our
Cuban music night with maestro
violinist Omar Puente.
There are always at least two
real ales on pump, and the
bar staff are friendly and the
beer, wine and spirits are very
reasonably priced.
So what's your message to
people who haven't visited
before?
Give it a go! You don’t get many
opportunities to hear live music
of this quality in a small, friendly
club setting and it's just up the
road and at a quarter of the
price of Ronnie Scott's.
We look forward to seeing you
there!
Fitness
Going the X-tra mile
elliptical trainer (better than
trying to spell that) or crosstrainer.
It's the fitness machine
where your feet stay on large,
flat pedals. Seen by some as the
poor relation of the treadmill, it
does have an important place
in training. It is low-impact and,
therefore, perfect for those
recovering from injury or literally
taking the first steps on their
fitness journey.
Yoga
If the parks, canal paths and
streets of Hackney belong to
the runners, the halls belong to
the yogis. There are seemingly
dozens of studios offering yoga
– in a dozen of styles – with
dozens more independent
practitioners.
Roger Love, a local personal trainer,
continues our A-Z of fitness with... X,Y
X-jack
If you are bored of the basic
jumping jack or need something
with more bite, try the X-jack.
For the jumping jack, start with
your feet together and your
hands down by your sides.
Jump your feet out to the side
and raise your arms above
your head. Immediately do the
opposite back to the starting
position and keep going.
An X-jack is a great progression.
You start with feet hip-width
apart, drop to a squat position,
so you can touch your toes with
30 LOVEEAST
your fingers. Then, jump out of
the squat, straighten your legs,
land on the balls of your feet,
and cross your arms across
your head to make an X. Then,
keep going.
You could start off with 30
seconds of X-jumps and then
take a 60-second rest before
going again. Try for 20 minutes.
You have an instant interval
session that will torch fat and
improve your cardiovascular
system.
X-trainer
This is what we used to call an
From my years in studios and
gyms, one thing is clear: more
than many other classes, it
all comes down to finding
a teacher whose style and
personality you hit it off with.
From what I have seen, good
local places to start would be
London Fields Fitness Studio,
in Mentmore Terrace, The
Refinery, in Well Street, or
Stretch in Ada Street.
London Fields offers classes
for £5 each. The low price does
not reflect a lack of quality, just
a commitment to affordable
fitness.
The Refinery offers a large
variety of high-quality classes in
Eating in
asparagus. Turn off the hob and
leave it to sit for 4-5 minutes.
Wash and spiralise the carrots
and courgettes. Place in a sieve
and once the asparagus is
ready, drain it into the sieve.
Using the cooking water to
blanch the courgetti and
carrotini leaves them perfectly
cooked 'al dente'. Add a
tablespoon of ghee or olive oil
on top and toss around before
serving the vegetable spaghetti
and asparagus onto two plates.
Courgetti & carrotini with
wild garlic and rocket pesto
Diana Warrings recommends a seasonal dish
that will prepare your skin for summer
May is the perfect month for a
wild garlic recipe. Only in season
until July, it can be added to
soups, salads, omelettes and
frittatas.
Combing vitamin A rich greens
with extra virgin olive oil was
such a clever idea of the people
of Genoa, the place where pesto
was born, as the oil helps with
the absorption of the vitamin.
It's vital for cell health so
prepares skin for the summer.
Method
.
Start with toasting the cashew
nuts in a frying pan, without oil,
until golden brown, and leave to
32 LOVEEAST
cool. Next, rinse the rocket and
wild garlic well.
Pat dry with a kitchen towel and
place in a food processor. Once
the nuts have cooled down, add
together with the rest of the
ingredients and blend until you
get a pesto-like texture. Season
with pepper and nutmeg, blitz
once more and fill a glass jar
with a lid and set aside.
If using white asparagus, wash
and peel before cutting it into
slices. Green just needs to be
washed and cut into slices.
In a small pot bring water to a
boil, add a little sea salt and the
Add a few tablespoons of pesto
and scatter goat's cheese and
roughly chopped sun-dried
tomatoes on top. Bon appetit.
The wine guide
of the vineyards and traditional methods of
production.
Taste eruption
These wines come from idyllic rural locations
on the top of high mountains, far away from the
mainstream agricultural districts and intensive
farming. They are hidden little gems which we are
happy to discover and share with our customers.
This month Vinarius announces two succulent
volcanic wines directly and exclusively imported
from the producers. Soto de Zemtinar,
Encomienda de Cervera (rrp £10.45) and Etna
Rosso, Tenuta Bastonaca (rrp: £22.45).
In the first case the vineyards are located at the
hearth of the Volcanic Massif Campo de Calatrava
in Spain at an altitude between 750m and 850m,
inside the Maar de Hoya de Cervera National
Park.
Etna Rosso is from a very small vineyard on the
top of the tallest active volcano in Europe (Etna
in Sicily) and uses 80% Nerello Mascalese, 20%
Nerello Cappuccio.
Eugenio Ciccarelli explains
why volcanic wines are
worth exploring
Volcanoes can destroy and create landscape,
terrify neighbours, and sometime even modify
our climate.
Medium-bodied and fresh, the first wine, with a
soft palate and a lingering finish. Full-bodied with
a refined tannin and nice smokiness, the second.
Vinarius is a wine merchant and enoteca located at
536 Roman Road, E3. It regulary organises tasting
events, check vinarius.london for details.
But volcanic soils are full of nutrients (minerals
in particular) and are usually very dark in
colour, both of which help vines to bear rich,
concentrated grapes.
Although no scientific study has ever shown
a direct connection between the presence of
various minerals in the soil and the aromas of
the final product, wines grown on volcanic soils
often have several characteristics in common:
fresh acidity, evident minerality and a distinct
character and longevity.
Two additional elements can influence the quality
of the wine from volcanic areas: the altitude
Eating out
Martello Hall
Nobody likes to see a gold old pub close but Susan
Birtwistle thinks this pizzeria is a good replacement
"Shame on you,"’ Harry told our polite and
delightful waiter. We’d all just got back from Rome
and he was ready for a pint. Unfortunately for
him, the old established 19th century pile of a pub
was now converted into a pizzeria, Martello Hall.
The chat continued about the loss of our
traditional local pubs and I do kind of miss them,
certainly the community idea of them. I didn’t
frequent the London Fields boozer but I liked it
being there, for those that did. However, it has to
be said Martello Hall remains as a local drinking
establishment, and a popular one.
I’ve personally tested out the G&Ts on at least
three occasions, and they’re damn good. It has
a gin distillery on site, you know. It also has 12
wines on tap – yep that’s only wine. No beer or
stout on tap, hence the ‘pint gate’ moment.
Of course it’s the gentrification. Brand new blocks
of flats are being built all around and you can see
that Martello’s slightly flashy interior is a good
match for those golden-balconied flats next door.
They too are going to love it. Hot desking with free
coffee by day, then a casual moon walk across for
cocktails and DJs at night. The vibe is good.
But we were there to eat pizza. I’d read that many
consider this the best pizza in London. Martello’s
does have its own wood-fired oven.
In Rome they cook them waffer thin and blistering,
with simple toppings. The toppings here have
been personally chosen from the chef's Italian
travels, so along with the classic Margherita, we
chose one topped with roast squash and beetroot
ricotta, hazelnuts and kale. Dee-licious.
We also had a Smokey Bandit which was smoked
pancetta and potato, truffle taleggio. Sooper tasty.
There’s a choice of nine pizzas – have one with
a salad of rocket, fennel and roasted garlic, you
can’t go wrong. Prego.
137 Mare Street, E8, martellohall.com
Pizzas £8-£15. They also do take-out.
Legal eagle
I'm frequently asked by small
business owners for guidance
on what they must do from a
legal and practical perspective
when taking on new staff. I take
them through a checklist.
Background checks
Most important is checking an
employee’s legal right to work in
the UK. Also consider criminal
record checks, references and
professional qualifications.
Restrictive covenants
Make sure the person is not
subject to any clauses in their
old contract that stop them
working for you (commonly
known as "non-competes"). You
could be liable for inducing a
breach of contract.
Contract of employment
Ensure both parties sign an
employment contract and keep
it on file. Make sure it complies
with the minimum legal
requirements and provides
adequate protection for you,
the employer.
Hire power
Employment lawyer Amy Cunningham
explains what a small business must
consider when hiring new people
Employee handbook
You should have a basic staff
handbook and give a copy to
the employee on their first day.
There are a few policies that are
required by law and others that
are highly advisable.
Payroll
Obtain a P45 from the
employee's previous
employer. Consider
whether to outsource
your payroll function.
HMRC
When an organisation takes on
its first employees, it should tell
HM Revenue and Customs by
registering as an employer.
36 LOVEEAST
Insurance
Companies need employers’
liability insurance as soon as
they become an employer. The
policy must cover the employer
for at least £5 million and
come from an authorised
insurer.
Pension
Every employer with at
least one member of
staff now has new duties
with respect to pensions,
including enrolling those who
are eligible into a workplace
pension scheme.
Data Protection Act registration
Under data protection law, you
may have to provide details of
how your organisation handles
personal data about staff.
Other practical matters
Don’t forget to plan an
induction, arrange for the
relevant IT hardware and
software, and update your
website.
