From The Editor:
Greetings For 2010
How time flies! In a blink of an eye, we have come to the end of 2009. As we
embrace the start of a brand new year, let us recall the happenings this year.
2009 has been a historic year for Singapore, with the launch of the SMRT
Circle Line, celebration of the 150 years of Singapore Botanic Gardens, the
Countdown to the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games, joint issues with
Philippines and Indonesia, 20th anniversary of the Asia Pacific Economic
Cooperation (APEC) of which Singapore hosted the APEC meetings and
many more.
In the upcoming year, we have many upcoming interesting stamp issues,
starting with the Zodiac Series - Tiger in January, celebrations of 4 different
organisations in our inaugural “Anniversary” issue. Nature-themed series,
such as “Butterflies” and the public initiative of the National Park Boards
(Nparks) “Know 10 Trees”, allow further public awareness of our nature
findings. We will also be releasing the 3rd and final stamp issue on the
Singapore 2010 Youth Olympics Games to commemorate its official launch
on 14 August 2010.
On behalf of Singapore Post Limited Philatelic & Stamps Department, we
thank you for your continued support of Singapore Stamps and we wish you
a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
STAMP ISSUE:
Zodiac Series - Tiger
There are a total of 12 animal signs in the Chinese
calendar based on five cycles of 12 years each,
with each cycle tempered by one of the five Chinese
elements of Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth.
According to Chinese astrology and belief, the
traits of these zodiac animals not only shape the
personalities of people born under the respective
sign but also their lives and the events of the year.
The affectionate, generous and attractive Tiger,
third in the Zodiac Cycle, starts off yet another
New Year on the Chinese zodiac calendar in 2010.
Those born in the year of the Tiger are often said
to possess character traits such as affectionate,
generous and attractive. Tigers are energetic
individuals who believe in enjoying a life full of
challenges and unexpected events.
Finding pleasure in the unpredictable, they are not
afraid to explore the new and unusual. They are
affectionate, generous, and faithful but can be
impatient and rebellious. Competitive, determined
and untiring in work when motivated in the right
way, Tigers will always approach their problems
in a direct or even a radical way and are never
in doubt about what they want to accomplish.
Famous personalities born in the Tiger year include
Ludwig van Beethoven, Stevie Wonder, Marilyn
Monroe, Ho Chi Minh, Alec Guinness and Karl Marx.
Kreta Ayer Stamp Society and Singapore Philatelic
Museum will be organising the annual Zodiac Fair
at Chinatown Point from 06 to 10 January 2010.
Daily from 10:00am to 07:00pm
See you there!
STAMP ISSUE:
Anniversary
Since the founding of modern Singapore in 1819,
the country has seen numerous changes and
advancements for her citizens. Committed to bring
forth changes and developments for the better of
the nation, the 4 organizations in this stamp issue
portrayed their growth with the nation in
celebrations of their anniversaries.
Housing & Development Board (50¢)
HDB, Singapore’s public housing authority, was
established on 01 February 1960 as a statutory
board, to tackle Singapore's acute housing shortage.
By 1965, the HDB had built over 50,000 flats to
house the people and the work of the HDB continued
over the years.
Beyond the provision of homes in comprehensively
planned towns, the public housing programme has
played a crucial role in strengthening social
cohesion through policies and programmes that
encourage different segments of the population
to live harmoniously together.
People’s Association (50¢)
The People’s Association (PA) was set up on 01 July
1960. Its mission then, as it is today, is to foster
social cohesion and racial harmony, to build a united
and resilient nation. PA offers the common space
and creates opportunities for people of different
races and religions, from all walks of life, to come
together to interact, make friends and bond.
Singapore Customs ($1.00)
The Customs department’s history dates back to the
Straits Settlement period. Established in 1910 under
the name Government Monopolies Department, the
main role of the department then was to regulate
the opium trade. Over the past 100 years, the
department has gone through several organisational
and name changes. In 2003, the department was reconstituted
to become Singapore Customs (SC), with
the mission of assuring the integrity of Singapore’s
trading system and supporting Singapore as a global
trade hub.
Singapore Scout Association ($1.00)
In 1907, Lord Baden-Powell successfully experimented
his ideas on Scouting for Boys at a camp on Brownsea
Island in England and Scoutmaster Frank Cooper
Sands from UK started Scouting in Singapore on 22
July 1910.
Grounded on time-proven values and practices,
including a culture of peace, developing socially
committed members, inclusiveness and gender balance,
SSA seeks to remain relevant by preparing the
members to meet ever-changing needs.
Playgrounds
A venue to play, time to play, companions to play
elements in a rich play environment.
Playgrounds, which are easily found in parks,
family dwellings, restaurants, resorts, and other
public spaces, are important places for children
to play in.
The Pasir Ris Park and West Coast Park, among
several other parks, are popular for their large
playgrounds and open spaces. An exciting variety
of play equipment such as slides, monkey bars,
swings and wall-climbing facilities can be found
in such playgrounds.
