32 | May 4, 2017 | The orland park prairie Life & Arts opprairie.com rating: PG-13 | genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi | run time: 133 Minutes ‘Rogue One’ worth rewatching, but Blu-ray lacks depth Bill Jones, Editor “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is faced with a number of disadvantages. It is not officially a part of the “saga,” in terms of numbered episodes focusing on the Skywalker family story. It is the first off-year film in Disney’s plan to complement the major installments of the Lucasfilm franchise, introducing plenty of new characters and their surroundings. And while it stands alone, it is limited — in terms of both technology and potential outcomes — by “Episode IV: A New Hope,” from which it pulls a line from the opening scrawl as inspiration and into which it feeds. But, despite all of that, “Rogue One” is one of the best films in the franchise to date, and that comes without qualifiers. Original trilogy, prequels, “The Force Awakens” — it can stand proudly alongside the best; and it tops the worst by a long shot. It takes inspiration from the film that started it all, while using the vastness of the universe to branch out, get creative and improve upon the formula. It uses the characters’ probable ill fates to tell a powerful story of sacrifice. And it finds some of its best moments in its secondary characters, in a cast that already is essentially playing second fiddle to the core saga. The fact that we are a step removed from the Skywalker clan in this film only makes it better. Finally, we get a tale that — while somewhere not far, far away and not too long ago removed from other events — feels fresh. We get to see what’s happening elsewhere in the vast universe, what heroes look like outside of the Jedi. That beacon of possibility shines brightest in Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen) and Baze Malbus (Wen Jiang), an odd couple who joins up with the cause of Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), who is trying to track down her father Galen (Mads Mikkelsen), who went to work for the Empire, building a superweapon for the bad guys in an effort to protect those most important to him. Her cause dovetails with that of the Rebellion, which wants to either stop Galen from completing his weapon or find the plans to exploit any potential weakness in the Death Star. In meeting Chirrut and Baze, we see a community not directly tied to the Force but one that worships the mystical power like a religion — with people split on whether or not they believe it to be true. Chirrut falls on the side of the faithful, while Baze seems to be done with it. Both will be tested in their beliefs by film’s end. “Rogue One” is riddled with clichés. It has a few questionably told sequences. Its tone can vary from scene to scene. And K-2S0, the newest droid, as per usual seems as much of a new toy marketing ploy as he does a cool character. But let’s be honest — it would not really be much of a Star Wars film if “Rogue One” did not have all of those things. The positives outweigh any negatives by a longshot. “Rogue One” is a lot of fun, despite its dour conclusion. Its characters are once again personalizing a grand story, and one that happens to tiein nicely to the main saga while not exactly being part of it. It is a must-see film for any Star Wars fan, and one that holds up to repeat viewings. That said, the Blu-ray release is lackluster. The extras clock in at just under an hour and 15 minutes, despite coming on their own disc. And most are the run-of-themill marketing featurettes that just feel a bit lazy nowadays for a franchise this big. But they focus predominantly on the characters, and they’re still worth a watch, if for no other reason than Wen Jiang’s explanation of why his children told him he needed to take the role. Everything one loves about Chirrut and Baze is part of that brief explanation, and it’s profound. But mostly, fans are just going to want to watch “Rogue One” again and again and again. “I am one with the Force and the Force is with me.” Have you seen a movie recently and want to let everyone know about it? We Got Games Episodes 3, 4 keep Walking Dead’s ‘New Frontier’ strong Bill Jones, Editor “The Walking Dead: A New Frontier” started with a one-two punch of episodes released together, kicking off a new season with plenty of new characters and one bombastic cliffhanger. And after a lengthy break of three months, it returned strong with the two episodes that follow: “Above the Law” and “Thicker Than Water,” released in March and April, respectively. The official plot description of the former states, “The group is faced with a shocking revelation after arriving in Richmond. Developments will further agitate tension from Javier’s past.” The second, “When threats arise from within the community, Javier must make improbable alliances in order to protect those he cares about.” And that is about as much as can be discussed, in part to avoid spoilers, in part because the series has some potential differences for each gamer, all stemming back to decisions made at the end of Season 2 that change what players see game to game. But Episode 4, in particular, presents some truly difficult choices to gamers, from a lethal injection to a complicated romance to potentially saving one character over another and ultimately deciding how violent one wants to be in the quest for survival. Violent actions from prior episodes also start to have major consequences in Episode 4. The moments are some of the most riveting the series has offered to date, with a few coming down to the wire of a timer to make a difficult choice. That players will be that invested in the characters, that anxious about what will come of any decision, is an incredible feat. And that the percentages of how gamers are making those choices are so close in the post-game recap shows just how tuned in to what makes this series work developer Telltale Games is this time around. Everything about “A New Frontier” feels like it has hit a peak in penultimate episode, and the finale of the hour leaves gamers not as surprised as Episode 2 but no doubt at the height of their anticipation going into Episode 5. Whether Telltale can wrap it all up in a satisfying manner will be key, though. One has to imagine most of the big path-changing decisions are out of the way, at least for this season. Now, we’re simply heading toward the big finish. But as anyone who has even read the comics or watched the television shows knows, a big finish with “The Walking Dead” often means a whole lot of death. Here’s hoping our favorite characters will still be standing when all is said and done. “The Walking Dead: A New Frontier” Episode 3: “Above the Law” and Episode 4: “Thicker Than Water” were both played on Xbox One for review. The series also is available on PlayStation 4 and PC, as well as mobile platforms. The series has an ESRB rating of Mature for blood and gore, intense violence, strong language, and use of drugs.
