We begin last month’s highlights 

with our altruistic initiative called 

#GivingWingsToDreams. This is a special 

programme through which SpiceJet 

operates special flights for underprivileged 

children and ones with special needs. 

We organised a special flight on March 

20 for 50 children from Chandigarh. The 

crew engaged with these first time flyers 

explaining the finer details of flying and 

the experience whilst they enjoyed a meal 

on-board. 

Holi celebrations this year too were 

special with an on-the-ground flash dance 

of children from Mala Smriti Home and 

Arya Orphanage at Delhi Airport’s Terminal 

1-D. To thank them for making it special, 

SpiceJet operated a special flight for these 

children. The kids were pampered on-board 

with delicious in-flight meals besides being 

gifted with goody bags from ITC and Amul, 

and SpiceJet merchandise giveaways. 

This year, SpiceJet promoted the concept 

of #spicejetwaterlessholi, which involved 

distributing Holi stickers that could be 

pasted by passengers on one another, 

thus celebrating the spirit of the festival 

and conserving water at the same time. 

A welcome chandan tilak, a white/denim 

dress code and serving of gujiyas on-board 

ensured that we delighted our customers 

by recreating the festival magic. 

I am happy to report that your 

favourite airline continued its exemplary 

performance. Our On-Time Performance 

was the best of all airlines for the sixth 

month in a row. Our Passenger Load Factor 

was the highest among all airlines for the 

23rd month in a row. 

This month we are proud to start 

our seventh international destination 

with a daily flight on the Kolkata-Dhaka 

route. Next month would also witness 

SpiceJet flying a popular route from 

India - a nonstop daily flight between 

Delhi and Bangkok. This new flight will 

connect the cities of Jaipur, Srinagar, 

Chandigarh, Dehradun, Jammu, Gorakhpur, 

Dharamshala, Surat and Jabalpur through 

convenient connections from Delhi. And 

within the domestic sector, we have 

launched a double daily flight from Delhi to 

Surat, the Diamond City of Gujarat. 

Last month we announced the 

graduation of the first batch of our 

Apprentice Program for aviation engineers. 

This is our initiative towards upskilling 

India consistent with Prime Minister Shri 

Narendra Modi’s vision of a Skilled India. 

The programme draws students from 

various AME institutes and trains them 

on state-of-the-art equipment under 

the instruction of world class tutors to 

address the severe shortage of industryready 

engineers. On March 15, 2017, in 

the presence of Shri Rajiv Pratap Rudy, 

Minister of State, Skill Development and 

Entrepreneurship and Shri Jayant Sinha, 

Minister of State for Civil Aviation, SpiceJet 

hosted the convocation ceremony of the 

first batch of 21 students.

extra legroom, and those who are particular about where they sit on a flight; a prepaid 

card that allows passengers to make cashless transactions; an add-on service that 

allows the flexibility of cancelling or changing ticket(s) to suit your travel plan; and 

finally a product that aims at greater customer ease in case of flight disruptions. No

SpiceJet’s SpiceMax provides more comfort and convenience. With extra 

legroom and greater personal space, passengers can travel with ease. 

Apart from significantly extra legroom on board, fliers can also enjoy other 

added ancillary products such as priority check-in, complimentary meal 

and beverage, priority baggage handling and priority boarding (aerobridge 

gates) at dedicated SpiceMax counters at the airport for a modest add-on fee

experience. When booking a connecting flight with a stop-over, passengers can 

purchase SpiceMax seats separately for the two flights.

Priority Check-In 

This service provides the 

passenger a hassle free 

and comfortable check-in 

experience at the airport 

with SpiceJet’s dedicated priority 

check-in counter. The passenger can 

buy Priority Check-In while or after 

making the booking. It can be bought 

latest up to two hours before the 

scheduled departure. The service is 

available only on www.spicejet.com or 

via SpiceJet’s Reservations. The prepaid 

service can be bought for per 

passenger, per sector of the journey, 

on the payment of the non-refundable 

fees. A Priority Check-In for flights 

within and/or originating from India 

costs Rs. 200. For flights originating 

from out of India, the fare is Rs. 300. 

The fees are refundable if the booking 

is cancelled by the passenger or the 

flight is cancelled by the airline. There 

is no additional fee applicable for 

infant passengers. Passengers who 

have bought Priority Check-In will 

have to check-in for their flight at the 

airport check-in counter.

My Flexi Plan 

Planning a trip will be easier 

than ever with SpiceJet’s new 

innovative add-on service, 

My Flexi Plan. Passengers can 

now enjoy the flexibility of cancelling or 

changing the ticket(s) to suit their travel 

plan. If they are certain about travel 

but not about the dates, then they can 

book a ticket by opting for this service. 

Customers can opt for this add-on at the 

time of booking by paying a fee of `1,125 

for domestic travel ticket and `1,250 for 

international travel ticket. The service will 

be applicable only for one change or one 

cancellation per ticket.

Fly For Sure has been launched for greater

INDIAN DOMESTIC TOURISM SURGED 

IN 2016 • 

According to the latest data from India’s Ministry of 

Tourism, a provisional total of 1.65 billion domestic 

trips were registered in India, 15.5% more than 

the 1.43bn recorded in 2015. But these visits are 

concentrated in a small number of states – the ten 

most-visited states accounted for 84.2% of domestic 

trips in 2016. Tamil Nadu (344.3 million visits) was 

India’s most popular domestic destination last 

year, followed by Uttar Pradesh (229.6m), Madhya 

Pradesh (184.7m), Andhra Pradesh (158.5m), 

Karnataka (129.8m), Maharashtra (115.4m), West 

Bengal (74.5m), Telangana (71.5m), Gujarat (42.8m) 

and Rajasthan (41.5m). 

ANDHRA PRADESH TOURISM WING

The department of tourism, government of Andhra 

Pradesh was awarded the best new hot spot 

destination at the Patwa Awards at the world’s

Noted sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has been invited by the Economic 

Development Board (EDB), Bahrain, to a sand art workshop and 

training programme. Around 30 teachers from the Ministry of Education 

in Bahrain will participate in this workshop. Pattnaik will teach various 

techniques of creating sand art during the five-day workshop. Pattnaik

COAL MINE TOURISM OPENED 

FOR VISITORS• 

To raise awareness about the importance 

of coal mining, which forms the backbone 

of most industries, Maharashtra Tourism 

Development Corporation and Western 

Coalfields Limited have entered into a 

unique agreement. Tourists will now be 

allowed to visit the depth of a WCL coal 

mine in Saoner, tour an eco-park and visit 

the open cast mine in Gondegaon. In 

a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, 

tourists will be taken inside Saoner 

Underground Mine No. 1, up to 1.5 km 

from its entrance. A unique man-riding 

system will take the tourists inside and 

a WCL guide will facilitate this trip, 

taking them about 100m below the 

ground surface.

Statistics released from the Airports Authority of 

India show the country’s airports handled more 

than 254 million passengers in 2016, up 20% on 

the previous year. This pushes India into fourth 

place in the global air travel rankings, overtaking 

Germany and sitting behind the USA, China 

and the UK. Delhi was predictably the most 

popular hub in the country, handling the 

55.6 million passengers that represent 

a 21% increase on 2015’s figures. Of 

India’s top 15 airports, 12 grew their 

passenger volume by over 15%, while 

Guwahati and Jaipur airports saw 

a growth of more than 30%. With 

passenger numbers at Bengaluru 

Airport surpassing 22 million, 

aviation bodies are considering 

reopening the city’s old airport. 

Passenger numbers on domestic 

routes increased by more than 

20% in every month of 2016, the biggest growth the 

country has achieved since 2006. 

Jammu & Kashmir Tourism, in collaboration with Ladakh 

Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil, 

took a mega initiative to promote ‘Ladakh’s Best Kept 

Secret’ i.e. Kargil as an upcoming tourism destination. The 

roadshow was organised at the Hyatt Regency Mumbai 

and attended by several dignitaries. While speaking at the 

event, Haji Inayat Ali, Chairman – Legislative Council, said, 

“The situation in Kashmir is stabilised. The government is 

working hard to boost and tap the unseen tourist spots in 

Ladakh, Kargil and the entire state of J&K.”

THE 10TH EDITION OF IPL will be 

bigger and more exciting as the 

availability of English players has 

attracted wider interest globally. 

Some of the franchises had released 

their senior players and have spent 

wisely on unorthodox and uncapped 

players. This year’s IPL has upset 

a few big names in international 

cricket as the likes of Imran Tahir, 

Ishanth Sharma, Irfan Pathan, Jonny 

Bairstow, Alex Hales and Marlon 

Samuels went unsold. In this special 

report over the next many pages, we 

bring you various facets of the IPL, 

one of the most watched sporting 

events anywhere in the world. 

The 47-day-long league will 

kick off from April 5 in Hyderabad 

as defending champions Sunrisers 

Hyderabad take on runners-up 

Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a 

night encounter. Here, we look at 

10 players to reckon with in the 

tournament. 

DAVID WARNER: The left-handed 

Australian batsman David Warner 

is one of the most prolific players in 

IPL. In the last edition, he was the 

second highest run-getter with 848 

runs at an average of 60.57 which 

included nine half-centuries. His 69 

off 38 in the IPL finals helped his 

team post 208 against the strong 

Royal Challengers Bengaluru side. 

His dynamic leadership helped 

Sunrisers Hyderabad clinch their 

first title. Warner encourages the 

youngsters and expresses himself on 

the field. He leads by example, and 

it will be interesting to see if he can 

defend the title. 

VIRAT 

KOHLI: 

The Indian 

skipper is 

undoubtedly 

one of the 

greatest 

T20 players 

and is a 

nightmare 

for his 

opponents. 

He is the 

leading 

run-scorer in IPL and makes batting 

look easy with his magnificent 

ability to strike between the gaps. 

He has scored a record 973 runs at 

an unbelievable average of 81.08, 

and has scored four centuries in 

IPL which is extraordinary. Kohli’s 

tremendous capacity to switch 

gears from anchoring the innings to 

hitting huge sixes is a great asset 

to the team. He is a master when it 

comes to chasing big targets and 

finishing the game in style. It will be 

fascinating to see if he continues 

from where he left. 

SURESH RAINA: One of the 

most consistent batsmen in IPL, 

Suresh Raina has scored 400 plus 

runs in seven consecutive IPLs. 

Comparatively, he hasn’t had the 

best of outings in the last two 

seasons but has always been a 

valuable contributor to the team’s 

success. He is only the second 

player to have 4000 plus IPL runs. 

His mighty heaps over the midwicket 

region are a thrill to watch. 

He is fearless, powerful, and is one 

of the best finishers in this format. 

Raina adds immense value to the 

team with his useful part-time offbreak 

and is lightning quick in the 

field. It will be interesting to see how 

he leads Gujarat Lions in their final 

year of IPL. 

QUINTON DE KOCK: The young 

and charismatic wicket-keeper 

batsman is one of the most 

dangerous cricketers in the limited 

overs format. Until last year, he 

wasn’t a regular for Delhi Daredevils 

but has established himself as a 

quality player. In the previous IPL, 

he scored a match-winning 108 

in a high-run chase against Royal 

Challengers Bengaluru. De Kock 

scored 445 runs in IPL 2016 at an 

average of 37.08. His athletic and 

smart glove work behind the 

stumps makes him a valuable 

player for Delhi Daredevils, and 

exciting to watch. 



THANGARASU NATRAJAN: A year 

ago, he was an unknown name in 

professional cricket and a year later, 

he is among the top 10 buys at IPL. 

The young Tamil Nadu left-arm fast 

bowler impressed one and all with 

his darting Yorkers in the Tamil Nadu 

Premier League last year. In a super 

over, defending 13 runs against the 

likes of Abhinav Mukund, Natrajan 

bowled five Yorkers and conceded 

just five runs to help his team win in 

a nail-biting finish. He is considered 

a death overs specialist and this has 

fetched him a contract worth ` 30 

million for Kings XI Punjab. It will be 

interesting to see if the young gun 

can change the fortunes of Kings XI 

this year. 

BEN STOKES: 

There isn’t 

an iota of 

doubt that 

the English 

All-rounder 

Ben Stokes 

is the most 

expensive 

buy in the 

history of IPL, 

considering his abilities and recent 

improvements. He is worth ` 145 

million for Rising Pune Super Giants 

and they will be hoping he performs 

as they railed at number seven in the 

IPL standings last year. Stokes bowls 

fast and is a tremendous striker of 

the ball. He is lightning quick on the 

field and is always on the minds of 

his opponents. He is probably the 

finest all-rounder in limited overs 

cricket. It will be interesting to see if 

he is worth the money spent. 

CHRIS WOAKES: Another English 

all-rounder, Chris Woakes is a skilled 

young cricketer who bowls wicket 

to wicket with subtle variations. He 

bats lower down the order and can 

clonk the ball hard. He may replace 

the injured Andre Russell in Kolkata 

Knight Riders. In recent times, 

Woakes has emerged as one of the 

useful cricketers for England and 

may well add value to the strong 

Kolkata Knight Riders team. In his 

all-time T20 career, Woakes has a 

strike rate of close to 140 which is 

superb for a lower order batsman. 

TYMAL MILLS: The left-arm fast 

bowler was recently in the news for 

his fiery spells in NatWest T20 Blast 

and was surprisingly picked up by 

Royal Challengers Bengaluru for a 

whopping ` 145 million. Mills, who 

suffered a career-ending back injury 

a few years ago, has chosen to play 

only T20 cricket and has mastered 

the art of bowling in the T20 format. 

He is an explosive fast bowler who 

bowls excellent Yorkers at the death 

overs and has a nipping pace that 

can be a cause for concern for the 

best of batsmen. Being a lefthanded 

bowler is another advantage 

in this format where the angle of 

delivery is not easy to score off. 

JASON ROY: The dashing English 

opener is in sensational form in the 

limited overs format and is a clean 

striker of the ball. He scores at a 

strike rate of close to 150 in the T20s 

and gets off to a blazing start in the 

power play. It will be exciting to see 

him open the innings for Gujarat 

Lions, either with Brendon McCullum 

or Dwayne Smith. Roy has scored 

four centuries in his T20 career and 

will be itching to make a valuable 

impact for Gujarat Lions in his first 

appearance in the Indian Premier 

League. 

MUSTAFIZUR RAHMAN: The young 

hardworking Bangladesh left-arm 

fast bowler was a hero for Sunrisers 

Hyderabad in the last IPL as he took 

17 wickets at an average of 24.76. 

He was one of the prime reasons for 

their IPL triumph. His slower ones 

are very difficult to pick and most 

of the batsmen struggle to score 

against him. Rahman doesn’t leak 

runs and has a staggering economy 

rate of 6.90 in IPL. With subtle 

variations, he has mastered the art 

of bowling at the death overs from a 

very young age. After an impressive 

season with Sunrisers Hyderabad, he 

has been retained. 

RASHID KHAN: The teenage 

sensation from Afghanistan has 

become popular overnight after 

he was picked up by Sunrisers 

Hyderabad for a huge sum of ` 40 

million. The 18-year-old leg-spinner 

is an expert at bowling a googly 

in the T20 format and bowls quick 

in the air with clever last-minute 

variations. He averages 14.80 and 

has an impressive economy rate 

of 6.03 in the 30 matches he has 

played. It will be interesting to see 

where and how he finds a place 

in the playing XI for Sunrisers 

Hyderabad.

“I was fortunate to be offered a 

sesame payasam as prasad at the Ayyappa 

temple in Pune. It was divine. Sesame is 

the central ingredient in Safed Murg, one 

of the most delicate Indian curries. It is 

prominent in Middle Eastern food which 

does not rely as heavily on spices as 

Indian food. For instance, Tahini, the 

popular Middle Eastern dip, spread and 

accompaniment is made from a paste of 

ground sesame seeds,” he adds. 

RAGI SESAME LADDOO

INGREDIENTS 

Finger millet (ragi) flour, 

roasted 

Roasted white sesame 

seeds 

Ghee 

1½ cup 

2 tbsp 

½ tbsp 

¾ cup 

Powdered jaggery (gur) 

Roasted and crushed 

almonds 10-12 

Roasted and crushed 

pistachios 10-12 

Cardamom powder ½ tsp 

METHOD 

Heat ghee in a non-stick pan, add 

finger millet (ragi) flour and sauté. 

Heat two tablespoon water and 

jaggery in another non-stick pan 

and let the jaggery melt. 

Add the melted jaggery to the 

finger millet flour along with 

almonds, pistachios, cardamom 

powder and white sesame seeds, 

and mix well. Remove from heat 

and set aside till just warm. 

Divide the mixture into equal 

portions and shape them into 

laddoos. 

Serve. 

SWEETNESS PERSONIFIED 

Sweets and desserts are no strangers to 

sesame seeds either. A large swathe of 

India swears by winter treats like gajak 

and revri made of sesame seeds and gur 

(jaggery) in delicious variations from 

hard to crumbly and flavoured with nuts 

and spices. The sesame-gur laddoos and 

barfis prepared on the occasion of Makar 

Sankrant (popular Hindu festival) are 

especially memorable. In Maharashtra, 

these sweets are exchanged with a 

customary, “Til gur ghya ani gode gode 

bola” which in English means “Accept

The use of sesame ranges from the 

traditional to the modern with Chef 

Phani saying, “The seeds can be 

sprinkled on khoya rolls, apple and 

banana toffee, and date pancakes served 

with ice-cream for the crunch and added 

texture they impart to the dessert.” In a 

twist-of-taste recipe, Chef Kekade 

suggests a black sesame seed macaroon 

with peanut butter stuffing for that 

incredible burst of nutty flavours apart 

from being a fulfilling treat. 

NUTRIENTS GALORE 

For a spice widely used as food 

ingredient, it is surprising that most of 

the world’s sesame yield is channelled 

into producing oil, with cold-pressed 

sesame oil favoured by the health 

conscious. Sesame oil has numerous 

health benefits apart from its mild nutty 

aroma, and is used in cooking and in salad 

dressings and dips. 

Why only oil, the seeds themselves 

are bursting with nutrients. As Padma 

Shri awardee, Chef-Author Sanjeev 

Kapoor explains, “Traditional societies 

have always vouched for the benefits of 

sesame seeds, yet it is only in the recent 

past that these powerhouses have been 

given ‘super food’ status. Loaded with 

lignans, protein, fibre, iron, and vitamins 

B and E, sesame seeds contain three 

times the amount of calcium in milk. Just 

a handful every day, especially in winter, 

improves bone and oral health; detoxifies 

the body; tackles respiratory problems; 

improves blood circulation; and fights 

cholesterol, blood pressure, liver disease 

and depression.” 

In his signature style, he comes up 

with an innovative wrap to a 

quintessentially Indian meal. “You can 

mix white sesame seeds with some saunf 

(fennel) and mishri (sugar crystals) for a 

mukhwas (mouth freshener) that does 

more than refresh your breath after a 

meal,” he concludes.

necessarily large, neither are there too many 

bankable faces but the content she chooses 

clicks with the masses and classes alike. 

Phillauri, her latest release, is cast in the 

same mould. Anushka not only acts in the 

film but is also co-producer with her 

brother. Here, she talks to us about films and 

much more… 

First things first, from a gritty NH10 to a lighthearted 

Phillauri, what is the trajectory you 

are following as a producer? 

I think at the end of the day, your reason to 

make films is to entertain people. I feel that 

more unique the content, more motivated 

will people be to step out of their houses to 

watch a film. So, I feel my next film must be 

different from the last. Actually, even as an 

actor, I have chosen my films based on what 

the script is trying to say and how my 

character helps in that area. So, as a 

producer, it is the same philosophy I am 

trying to follow. I would like to invest in the

Phillauri too, the idea was to invest 

similarly – especially VFX of the ghost, 

etc. 

How is it acting in a film that you 

are producing? 

It is strange you know, to strike a balance 

between being a producer and an actor. I 

sometimes wonder as to why I became a 

producer. I could have led a normal 

actress’ life. But then producing is 

something that I not only enjoy but has 

given me a long-term goal. The challenge 

is always about when to get involved and 

when to disconnect and focus on acting. 

The prep you do for a film and postproduction 

is the toughest. There are 

days when you have to firefight. But I 

have a very good team that has helped me 

maintain a balance between being 

producer and actor. Fact is, on the set, I 

would not even speak to my brother to 

stay in my “actor zone” 

The leads are so diverse in their 

backgrounds - you, Suraj Sharma and Diljit 

Dosanjh. What was the chemistry between 

the three of you like? 

Yes, we two were very different in our 

approach to the material. But I think I 

can speak for all of us that once the 

camera starts rolling, it doesn’t matter 

how we approach things. As a matter of 

fact, Diljit refused to be part of Atul 

Mongia’s acting workshop right before 

filming began. My brother was nervous 

about Diljit not being okay with the 

workshops. I can understand where 

Diljit comes from. It could be fear, 

anxiety or anything else. But as long as 

he performed on the set, I was okay with 

it. Suraj is very committed. He used to 

always take notes, and made all of us 

insecure. So, his 100-page script became 

a 200-page one because he added so 

many notes. 

You have rapped in Naughty Billo. What 

was the experience like? 

I loved the song. It was such a catchy 

number. Actually, I insisted I wanted to 

be part of it. I have rapped in it for the 

very first time. I don’t think I will take it 

up seriously but I loved doing this one. 

You have been constantly followed by the 

media ever since you went public about your 

relationship with Virat Kohli… Does that 

bother you? 

I am indifferent to it. They are probably 

doing their job. I didn’t ask them to 

follow me. I don’t think there’s any harm 

in this. Everyone has a personal life but I 

would like to keep a few things very 

personal and the media too should 

respect my privacy. Both Virat and me 

are busy with our individual work 

because our focus is on our careers. As 

long as the media does not step on my 

toes, I am cool. 

Will you be producing more films? 

Certainly, but I want to go slow. As I said 

acting remains my priority and I will 

produce films as and when I come across 

good scripts.

It could have been like most 

hamlets in HP (Himachal 

Pradesh), affording views 

of the Himalayas as far as 

the eye can see. Except 

that it is not. What makes 

Andretta stand out is not 

only its foreign-sounding name but also 

its rich legacy. Till not so long ago, this 

quaint village along the Dharamshala- 

Palampur route in Kangra district of HP 

was better known as `Mem da pind' 

which translates as “village of the 

English lady” after Norah Richards, an 

Irish actress, who relocated here in the 

1920s, after the demise of her husband, 

Philips Richards, a professor at Lahore 

University. 

Her house – built in the local style 

using mud, bamboo and slate and painted 

canary yellow – continues to bask in the 

winter sun at Andretta. Woodland 

Estate, as her property was once called, 

came to be known for the school of 

drama she established. Back in the day, 

doyens like Hindi film actor Prithviraj 

Kapoor would grace the many theatre 

festivals held here. Even today, the well 

laid-out amphitheatre in the courtyard 

of this great lady’s house is not to be 

missed. Norah was instrumental in 

Andretta’s evolution as an artists’ colony. 

She invited eminent personalities such 

as noted painter Sobha Singh, Professor 

Jai Dayal from Lahore University, 

famous painter-sculptor from Assam 

B.C. Sanyal, and studio potter Sardar 

Gurcharan Singh to make it their home. 

Mirage, a popular heritage homestay 

here, was once Professor Jai’s place of 

residence. 

Denis Harrap, who manages Mirage, 

and left behind his work as an art 

director and set designer in some of the 

hippest places in London, New York and 

Los Angeles 10 years ago to live in 

Andretta, says, “The rat race in New York 

doesn’t interest me anymore. Andretta 

offers a more peaceful ambience… You 

could say the grandfathers of modern 

Indian culture were here. After 

Independence, they needed to anchor 

themselves and decided to come here. 

Most of the houses were built in 1947- 

48.” Perhaps it is this Zen-like quality 

which drew actor Kabir Bedi, and before 

him, his mother, Freda Bedi; and the 

likes of Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna 

Pathak Shah to Andretta.

POTTERS’ PARADISE 

Andretta has one more surprise up its 

sleeve – Andretta Pottery and Craft 

Society (http://www.andrettapottery. 

com) – currently managed by Sardar 

Gurcharan’s son, Mansimran Singh, and 

his wife, Mary. Dedicated to the learning 

and development of handmade clay 

pottery, the studio houses a terracotta 

museum showcasing pottery from 

remote areas of HP, Mexico and Japan. 

Among the items on display are ancient 

terracotta figurines from Kangra Valley 

and clay art that takes you back in time to 

the Sanskrit play, Mricchakatika. The 

museum occupies pride of place as one of 

the few remaining terracotta museums 

in the world. Pottery from Andretta – 

mostly tableware and home décor – 

forms a hot-selling item in leading stores 

across India and the world. Clay found in 

the region is used in diluted form, to 

create patterns on terracotta pottery. 

The motifs draw from traditional likhnu 

and rangoli made by Kangra women 

using natural colours. 

The studio also serves as a learning 

ground for locals and tourists alike. On 

any given day, there is a motley group at 

the potter’s wheel; some of them working 

on abstract designs while others on basic 

bowls. A water stream flowing nearby 

comes in handy to mix clay. Sheila 

O’Hara from the United Kingdom, 

pottery student and enthusiast, has been 

visiting Andretta for the past three 

decades. “Pottery is a getaway for me. I 

do art pieces such as frames,” she says. 

Shubham Sankhyan, who teaches 

pottery at the studio, says, “Many 

business honchos, bankers, politicians 

and students attend pottery workshops 

here. Pottery is a stress buster. It helps 

improve concentration and is 

therapeutic.” For those who want to 

learn pottery, there are day courses as 

well as three-month workshops. 

Workshop students can find 

accommodation in houses near the 

studio. 

ARTISTS’ RETREAT 

When in Andretta, Sobha Singh Art 

Gallery (http://www.sobhasinghartist. 

com/) is yet another must-see. Sobha, a 

Padma Shri awardee and noted painter 

of the Sikh gurus, came to Andretta in 

1947 and stayed here for the rest of his 

life, creating masterpieces in his studio 

and garden house. 

Adorning the studio are an 

unfinished canvas mounted on an easel, 

paint brushes, and an arm chair even as 

oil paintings, portraits and charcoal 

sketches share space with tomes the 

likes of “Gulbadan”, “Toehold on Zen”, 

and “Michelangelo”. There are paintings 

of Guru Nanak and Baba Sheikh Farid; a 

portrait of the freedom fighter Bhagat 

Singh; and photographs with actors 

Prithviraj and Balraj Sahni, and poetessauthor 

Amrita Pritam. Among the works 

on display, one brings to life Omar 

Khayyam’s “Rubaiyat” while another is 

like actually being there at Khajjiar hill 

station in Chamba. The artist’s personal 

belongings, including a rabab and a 

record player complete the room. 

Apart from Sobha, Andretta was also 

home to renowned painter-sculptor and 

recipient of Padma Bhushan, Sanyal. His 

mud-and-slate house set in an orchard 

sees visitors dropping by to pay 

obeisance. Last but not the least, how can 

any visit to Andretta be complete 

without paying homage to Norah. In the 

garden of her “Chameli Nivas” is her 

grave, a solemn reminder of the effort 

taken by one woman, and a foreign one at 

that, to make Andretta a global art hub.

There is a popular saying 

in Bengali – “Sob tirtho 

bar bar, Gangasagar ek 

bar.” This roughly 

translates to – one can go 

to any other pilgrimage many times, but 

one can go to Gangasagar only once in 

their lifetime. This saying mainly 

originated in the ancient times because 

of the difficulties faced by pilgrims in 

reaching Sagar Island, which plays host 

to the Gangasagar pilgrimage on the day 

of Makar Sankranti. The Ganga is 

worshipped as a goddess from its origin 

at Gomukh in the Himalayas. But it is at 

Sagar Island, situated at the tip of the 

Sundarban delta, home to the famous 

Royal Bengal tiger, that the Ganga finally 

meets the sea, after travelling almost 

2,500 km. Pilgrims in ancient times had 

to cross turbulent tides in country boats 

to reach the island. But times have 

changed, and reaching Gangasagar is no

longer such an arduous task. Situated 

about 110 km from Kolkata, Sagar Island 

is just a 5-hour drive and a 45-minute 

ferry ride away. 

The Gangasagar Mela continues to 

throb with life, with the energy of 

millions of pilgrims. The visit fulfils the 

lifelong desires of the pilgrims, and 

often one can see tears of joy rolling 

down their cheeks. Hundreds of 

thousands of pilgrims will throng Sagar 

Island and the usually quiet beach will 

turn into a human congregation, which 

is the second largest of its kind in the 

world. Unlike the Kumbh, which 

happens once every four years in 

different parts of India, the Gangasagar 

Mela happens every year on Makar 

Sankranti. After the sacred dip, the 

pilgrims do a puja at the Kapil Muni 

Temple or Ashram, which is the main 

temple with an interesting story 

attached to it. 

According to legend, King Sagar of 

the Ikshvaku dynasty had two queens, 

Keshani and Sumati, but neither had a 

child. Sagar performed severe 

austerities before his wives could 

produce sons. Keshani gave birth to a 

son called Asmajas and Sumati bore 

60,000 sons. Sagar performed the 

Ashwamedha Yagya to declare his 

supremacy over the neighbouring 

kingdoms. According to the prevalent 

custom, the sacrificial horse was let 

loose and allowed to wander into the 

neighbouring kingdoms. If the horse 

was caught, a battle ensued and the 

outcome decided the winner. The 

60,000 sons of Sagar were following the 

horse when they saw him enter a cavern 

where sage Kapil Muni was meditating. 

Not seeing the horse in the cavern, they 

presumed that Kapil Muni had captured 

it. They did not kill Kapil Muni as he 

was a sage but they started disturbing 

his meditation. Annoyed at being 

disturbed, Kapil Muni burnt the 60,000 

sons with a curse. 

Since his sons did not return, King 

Sagar sent his grandson Angshumaan in 

search of them. Angshuman traced his 

uncles’ footsteps and arrived at Kapil 

Muni’s ashram. He saw a mound of 

ashes, and realising what had happened, 

he appealed to Kapil Muni for the mukti 

(freedom) of his uncles. That’s when 

Kapil Muni suggested him to bring the 

Ganga on prithvi (earth) so that the 

water can give them mukti. Time passed 

and later Bhagiratha, the greatgrandson 

of King Sagar, brought Ganga 

to earth by offering prayers to Brahma, 

Vishnu and Mahesh. 



Whether you believe in 

mythology or not, being present at 

the Gangasagar Mela is an 

experience of a lifetime. Although 

the main holy dip is scheduled for 

January 14, 2017, the never-ending 

stream of pilgrims usually start 

pouring in at least a week before 

the auspicious day and occupy 

every available space on the sandy 

beach. They move about the place 

in groups, many displaying saffron 

and red flags, identifying the 

religious akhara (religious 

subgroup) they belong to. People 

walk to the sound of the bells, 

blowing conch shells and chanting 

prayers. Strains of devotional songs can 

be heard from near and far. An array of 

shops are stacked with heaps of 

religious items such as vermilion, 

rudraksha, colourful beads, conch 

shells, and more earthly items such as 

food and utensils. 

As the much awaited Makar 

Sankranti day arrives, all wait with 

intense expectation. The sandy track to 

the water’s edge is crowded with people 

who sit around fires before proceeding 

for the bath, chanting devotional songs 

and prayers. The biting cold of January 

from across the sea lashes the bare 

bodies of the pilgrims, but there is a 

confidence on their faces and fire 

burning in their eyes, something that 

only comes from deep belief. The bustle 

of activity continues for quite some time 

as the pilgrims perform a series of 

rituals. Many perform the symbolic 

crossing of the river of Baitarani to 

attain moksha. All in all, an apparently 

calm, nonchalant seafront is charged 

with the extraordinary power of the 

believers. Even if you don’t count 

yourselves among them, it would be 

worthwhile to visit the place once, just 

for the sake of the life-changing 

experience it provides.

stopped at the gurgling streams they fed 

to catch some breath and drink from 

flowing waters. 

Three hours later we were at Magic 

View Café which true to its name, offers 

stunning views of the 2,500 metre deep 

valley alongside. This is also the point 

from where Triund develops a mind of its 

own, and we were warned as much by

us however was to refuel ourselves with

us into sleep, and all we dreamt of was the 

wonder that is Nature!

Best thing about Belagavi: 

It’s a cosmopolitan town with a 

mix of many languages forming 

a confluence of Marathi and 

Kannada cultures. Its weather, 

which is moderate and cool 

throughout the year, is a major 

attraction. It is strategically 

located, connecting the three states of 

Goa, Maharastra and Karnataka. 

Favourite eating places: Belagavi is 

famous for its sweets and chaats. The 

many branches of sweetmeat shops 

Purohit and Kalyani are famous for their 

kunda (made from milk) and kardant 

(a mixture of dry fruits and coconut). 

Belagavi is also known for its biryani 

which I would recommend at hotels like 

Charminaar and Niyaz. 

Best place to hang out: The area around 

Belagavi Fort has many places where 

locals hang out. There is a beautiful 

lake as well as a park. You can also walk 

or cycle around the fort. Those with a 

religious or spiritual bend of mind can be 

found at one of the many temples within 

the forts complex, the Safa Masjid or at 

the Ramkrishna Mission Ashram nearby. 

Local attractions: The Kittur Fort was 

once held by the brave Rani Chennamma 

who had revolted against the British. 

The two famous waterfalls Gokak and 

Godchinmalki are 60 km away from city. 

Bhimghad Wildlife Sanctuary is on the 

way to Goa. At Yellurghad is the tallest 

fort from the Maratha empire era - it 

attracts many trekkers. 

Recommended places nearby: 

Kolhapur, known for its forts, temples 

and caves; and Bijapur, famous for its 

Gol Gumbaz mausoleum; are on the 

itinerary of many visitors who come 

to Belagavi. Goa, Karwar and the Tilari 

Backwaters are also popular tourist 

haunts. 

Belagavi when compared to other 

cities: Belagavi is not just a city but it is 

a feeling. It is cosmopolitan, a shopper’s 

paradise, cool and green. I have been to 

many cities but I still prefer Belagavi.

Continental and Indian Platters 

SPICEJET HAS UNVEILED an all-new inflight menu and flyers can now look forward to 

a fresh and improved dining experience. The airline has added a number of new 

alternatives to its ‘buy on board’ options. The ‘Hot Meals’ section has been entirely 

revamped. In addition, special meal categories such as Gluten-free meal have been 

introduced. Also, a special pre-booking menu has been activated for availing Thai, 

Continental and Indian platters. Hot favourites like Pringles and Aam Papad (two 

flavours being Bomb Peda & Spicy Meetha) have been introduced in the non-perishables 

section to entice the kids and youth categories of customers. With biriyani and kathi

SpiceJet celebrated the festival of colours with tiny tots 

SpiceJet celebrated the country’s most vibrant festival with children. Adding a dash of 

colour to brighten their lives, SpiceJet celebrated Holi with 150 kids from the Delhi-based 

Mala Smriti Home and Arya Orphanage. The airline organised unique initiatives such 

as waterless Holi, Holi dance and joy rides. The children got to let their hair down while 

enjoying a Holi dance specially organised by the airline at Delhi airport’s T1D. The airline 

also organised an exclusive joy ride for the 150 kids, embarking on a unique hour-long 

journey flying over Delhi. The kids were pampered onboard with delicious flight meals 

besides being gifted with goody bags from ITC and Amul, and SpiceJet merchandise 

giveaways. 

The airline also distributed waterless Holi stickers to commemorate the festival 

without the use of water. Passengers were welcomed with a chandan tilak. All cabin crew 

adorned whites and denims. The airline also served gujiyas as part of the Hot Meals on 

the day of Holi. 



SpiceJet hosts the first AME apprenticeship for Indian aviation 

In a first-of-its-kind initiative by an Indian airline, SpiceJet unveiled an extensive 

apprenticeship programme for engineering and maintenance workforce in its bid to 

tap young talent across the country. With Indian aviation grappling with a dearth of 

quality engineers, SpiceJet has pioneered a year-long DGCA-approved enterprise to roll 

out industry-ready candidates. On March 15, in the presence of key dignitaries such as 

Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Minister of State, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and Jayant 

Sinha, Minister of State, Civil Aviation, SpiceJet hosted the convocation ceremony of the 

first batch, which comprised 21 students. The extensive training programme encompasses 

three months of theory-based, classroom guidance followed by immediate exposure to 

on-ground experiential learning with e-learning being pursued on an ongoing basis. The 

training is imparted by industry veterans with an average experience of more than 20 

years who have been exposed to all kinds of aircraft (from turboprops to wide-bodied). 

The trainees were offered a stipend along with the training and on successful completion 

of the programme will be offered jobs in SpiceJet. This apprentice programme is a small 

contribution of SpiceJet towards PM Narendra Modi’s vision of Skill India. 

SpiceJet is India’s most 

punctual airline 

SpiceJet continues its dominance 

in the aviation space by clocking 

the highest industry OTP (On-time 

Performance) and PLF (Passenger 

Load Factor) in February 2017 as per 

statistics released by DGCA. This is the 

fifth month in a row that the airline 

topped the OTP charts, at 81.1%. The 

airline also topped the PLF metrics 

for the industry at 93.7%, garnering 

over 90% PLF for the 23rd month in 

a row. SpiceJet, which operates on 

an average 343 daily flights, carried 

almost 11.32 lakh passengers in 

February 2017.

SpiceJet spreads joy to 50 underprivileged children through its 

‘Giving Wings to Dreams’ programme 

SpiceJet offered a special flight on March 20 to a set of 50 underprivileged children 

kids who had never flown before. The initiative was in association with the Rotary 

Club of Chandigarh, and the children were provided with sandwiches and juices 

onboard. #GivingWingstoDreams is a special initiative by SpiceJet under which the 

airline organises special treats for underprivileged children and for children with 

special needs. Previous initiatives include similar flights for children from Calcutta 

orphanages for a day trip to Delhi, and for a group of autistic children from Chennai 

who were taken on a day trip to Madurai.

Trophy at Skylympics 2017 

SpiceJet emerged victorious at 

Skylympics 2017, bagging the overall 

Champion’s Trophy at the championship 

held from March 3-5 at the New Udaan 

Bhawan, IGI airport, New Delhi. 

Team SpiceJet, called Spice Strikers, 

bagged the highest number of honours 

across categories with two gold and three silver medals across five of the six 

categories, including cricket, badminton, volleyball, athletics and table tennis. 

In all, 35 SpiceJetters participated in the competition. Skylympics comprised a 

total of 22 teams and 411 matches. SpiceJet’s HR team selected the Spice Strikers 

by inviting nominations from employees across all departments and locations. 

Former Indian cricketer Zaheer Khan and former captain of the Indian national 

hockey team Dhanraj Pillay were present at the event to give away the awards to

SPICEJET CABIN CREW IS BEAUTY QUEEN 

A top achiever at her workplace, Simran Tiwari has also won the 

main prize at a leading beauty pageant

It was a proud moment for all at 

SpiceJet when Simran Tiwari, 

Cabin Crew based in Ahmedabad, 

won the Miss India crown at the 

Mr. and Miss India 2017 pageant. 

The beauty contest was organised 

on February 26, 2017 by Ghaziabadbased 

event management firm Dreamz 

Production House. The grand finale 

was held at the Radisson Blu hotel in 

Kaushambi, 20 minutes away from New 

Delhi. The participants competed on a 

`Goan attire’ theme, wearing casual, 

ethnic and western dresses. Kamil Khan 

won the Mr. India title. 

The auditions for the contest 

had started in October 2016. Simran, 

originally from Indore, was a wild card 

entry. After the initial round of screenings 

in 36 Indian cities, 30 boys and 30 girls 

from all over the country made the final 

cut. 

"The best part of this journey was 

that I took every step on my own and 

with an uncertainty of the future,” says 

Simran. “Beginning from the first round, 

I set myself short term goals. I had 

nothing to lose and everything to gain. 

I approached the pageant with a very 

positive approach and this helped me 

win the crown." 

The judges were Bollywood director 

Madhur Bhandarkar, Bollwood actor 

and former model Urvashi Rautela, 

Bollywood actor Zoya Afaroz, Rannvijay 

Singh of MTV Roadies fame and 

Bollywood producer Vishal Shah. Simran 

took home ` 11 lakh as prize money. 

A SpiceJet staffer since September 

30, 2015, Simran has been a consistent 

achiever. She has received seven 

Passenger Appreciations in the last six 

months. During the same period no 

disciplinary letters were issued to her 

and she did not avail of even a single sick 

leave. Her seniors and colleagues laud 

her for her positive approach towards 

her work and responsibilities. Simran 

was a SpiceJet Crew of the Month for 

February 2017. 

She is very supportive towards all the 

facets of Operations and carries the right 

approach and attitude that is required 

in the customer-centric Industry. Apart 

from her latest achievement, Simran has 

also won the Ms. Central India and Ms. 

Indore titles, both in 2015.
