WELCOME TO THE ALL GOLD WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON 4 York is a place like Cheltenham in many ways. Picturesque, historic and a tourist magnet for the area. It is also on the edge of the heartland of rugby league – though less on the edge than Gloucestershire of course. Founded in 1868, the club has been through much and George Cowburn’s article on page six gives an insightful flavour of that journey. Their struggles at the end of last season and into the off-season were well documented with the lack of a home venue striking a chord with the All Golds who themselves are working towards establishing a home base from which they can operate. York, of course contested the League 1 Cup Final last season after defeating us in the semi and we were disappointed not to make the final this time after last week’s defeat by the Crusaders. Hopefully, the players will be able to make up for that loss and take the league points today. Aside from George’s piece, this issue of the All Gold extends the Flame of the West page, geographically at least, into Wales where Ian Golden outlines the changes in the structure of the Welsh game following the demise of the Conference League South and return of the three Welsh clubs that competed there. The summer really starts this weekend as the west of England league kicks off with the annual 9s tournament in Swindon. Next week the league campaign begins in earnest and we wish every team good luck and an enjoyable season. International RL is in focus this weekend with the mid-season international between England and Samoa featuring on a triple bill with Fiji playing Tonga and PNG facing the Cook Islands on the undercard. Fixtures like these are arguably more important for the Pacific nations as they aim to strengthen their ‘brand’ and reduce the lure of the Kangaroo and Kiwi jerseys to their better players. How much of a benefit to England is a point much argued over in the UK. The RFL are streaming the game on their website (for a fee) as they recognise the requirement to broadcast the national team’s matches. A strong international game is essential for the growth of rugby league as a national sport so maybe the penny has dropped with the powers that be? Could this be the start of a realisation that However, Super League clubs have already voiced concerns about losing players for a game and the risk of injuries, though the England side has lost both its likely starting halfbacks even before they got to the airport. Next step would be to rationalise the season by ditching the Super 8s and having top four play-offs after each team plays the other home and away and plays a game in a Magic weekend. But again the clubs would bemoan the loss of revenue from the shorter calendar. A shorter season could leave the way open for end of season tours and scheduled international tournaments like the Four Nations, European Championships and World Cup to further increase the growth of the game. Indoors, it’s good to see the Severn Stars Netball side finding its feet in the Vitality Netball Superleague. After two consecutive victories including a 66-62 win over champions Surrey Storm, they were brought down to earth with a 59-33 loss to Team Bath. The Stars’ hopes of ending the season in the top four play off positions were dented by that result and at the time of writing the eighth-placed Stars were preparing for a trip to the Ricoh Arena to face second-placed Wasps Netball. Their next home match is Saturday 6 May, at the University of Worcester Arena , 7.30pm centre-pass as they say.
