Summer Camp
• Continued from page 1
Each camp day begins and ends at the
JCC on 5655 Thompson Rd. in DeWitt.
Depending on the camp, some campers
may go off-site for scheduled field trips and
specialty camp activities. Early and late
care options are available for all campers.
Young teens entering grades 7–10
looking to take on some responsibility
should check out the Junior Camp Aide,
Camp Aide and Counselor in Training
(CIT) programs. They offer many
opportunities to hone teamwork and
leadership skills.
Camp Rishon registration is currently
in full swing. Register your child anytime
right up until the start of camp on June
26 and throughout the summer prior to
the start of each camp session. But don’t
delay. Spots go quickly and some schoolage
specialty camp sessions closeout early.
Except for the Camp Aide and Counselor
in Training teen programs, current JCC
membership is not necessary for Camp
Rishon registration. However, JCC
members receive discounted camp rates. A
discount for siblings is also available.
Welcome JCC Members
The 2017 outdoor
swimming season has
finally arrived! The JCC of
Syracuse’s outdoor heated
pool is a great gathering
place for members and
their guests to cool off,
relax and exercise.
Make the most of your membership by using the
pool to its fullest this summer. Come swim after
work, on weekends with family and friends or after
early morning workouts. Incorporating the pool
lessons, and children’s pool parties.
Because the JCC pool is a members-only benefit
(guests are welcome when accompanied by a
member, see below), please remember to bring
your membership card to the pool and check-in at
the lifeguard desk upon entering the pool area. If
Lobby Renovations
• Continued from page 1
Being able to offer a safe and welcoming
environment here at the JCC is our top priority.
The new, secured entrance inside our main
lobby will be constructed of the highest quality
protective materials. It will provide an extra
level of control to compliment the many security
measures already in place. Yet it won’t be
obtrusive or distracting. In fact, it will integrate
seamlessly with our building traffic and flow.
Our members will enjoy quick and easy entry
through the new doors during business hours
with a swipe of their membership card.
While the JCC’s new wall is at the top of our
to-do list, it comes at an unexpected time.
That’s where you come in. We are seeking
the support and generosity of our JCC family
and the community to help us. Please make a
tax-deductible donation toward the construction
of our new lobby entrance. Your help with
this important upgrade will afford even greater
peace of mind among all who enter our building.
Please donate today to help build the JCC
wall. All gifts are graciously welcomed and
greatly appreciated.
To make a donation, or to discuss special
recognition opportunities for more significant
contribution amounts, please call our main
office at 315-445-2360.
The worth of a good name
By Rabbi Evan Shore
Some people have the custom to study
Pirkei Avot, Chapters of the Ancestors,
every single Shabbat afternoon, during
the summer months. In it, we find the
following teaching, loosely
translated, a crown of a good
name surpasses and exceeds all
other crowns.
Throughout the ages
countless rabbis have attempted
to explain this concept. To me
it is very simple. An individual
may be at the top of a particular
field: a superb teacher, outstanding
physician, erudite professor, or prodigy in
the arts, and if a good name is absent, all
is for naught. Many professions chosen by
people do so by means of being gifted in
that particular pursuit. Accordingly, we see
the crown of a good name is so different.
One works an entire life to earn, build and
maintain a good name. It is
not instinct or a gift, rather an
attribute we work upon and toil
in every day.
In essence, our true self
is not the title we are known
by, rather the good name we
pursue during our life. Unless
accompanied by the Keter Shem
Tov, crown of a good name, the other
crowns, that of Torah, the priesthood and
royalty, lose their luster and value. Rabbi
Baruch Epstein, writes in his commentary
on Pirkei Avot, “A good name is like sugar
that sweetens a particular product.”
The most important lesson we should
teach our children, family and friends
is the worth of a good name. In our
relationships with others a little sugar can
go a long way! We all have the ability to
achieve this level and please G-d warrant
wearing the crown of a good name. All we
have to do is invest in the effort.
JCC’s senior kosher dinners starting up again June 26
The JCC of Syracuse is a great place for
seniors to enjoy a hot, nutritious and
well-balanced kosher meal on Monday
evenings all summer long. The JCC’s Dr.
Morton and Mrs. Libby Maloff Summer
Senior Dinners will kick off on June 26.
The weekly dinners will
be held on Mondays at
5 p.m. A variety of live
entertainment will be
included each week as part
of the dinner program.
This JCC summertime
tradition will run through
August 21.
The JCC’s summer
dinners, open to seniors
age 60 and older, are
offered for a suggested
contribution of $5 per person. Registration
is required by the Wednesday before each
dinner by calling 315-445-2360.
“We’re delighted to get our senior
dinner program going again this summer,”
said Marci Erlebacher, JCC of Syracuse
executive director. “It offers seniors a very
warm and inviting social atmosphere
to enjoy a delicious kosher meal in the
company of friends.”
The JCC’s weekly summer dinners are
an additional component to its successful
Bobbi Epstein Lewis Senior Adult Dining
Program. The program’s weekday senior
lunches will continue at noon Tuesdays
through Fridays during those weeks the
summer dinners are held. The lunch
program offers seniors age 60 and over a
nutritious and well-balanced kosher meal
for a $4.00 suggested contribution.
The JCC Senior Adult Dining Program
is the only senior nutrition program
available outside of New York City
serving kosher meals five days per week.
The program is funded in part by the
Onondaga County Department of Aging
Senior dinner volunteers needed
Helping east-area seniors live independently
Do you or someone you know have
questions about Social Security benefits,
SNAP (food stamps), Home Energy
Assistance Program (HEAP) benefits,
transportation or other
services? The JCC’s
Neighborhood Advisor can
help seniors in the DeWitt,
Fayetteville and Manlius
areas with outreach,
information, referrals and
benefit applications.
Sharon Kieffer, the
JCC’s Neighborhood
Advisor, assists seniors age
60 and older by providing
information about programs
available in the community
and by helping to obtain necessary
services so that they can remain living
independently in their homes. There is no
cost for this service, however donations
Sharon Kieffer, the JCC’s
Neighborhood Advisor
are accepted and appreciated. Kieffer is
generally available most weekday mornings
for phone consultations and meetings at
the JCC, at seniors’ homes or in public
places such as local libraries.
Kieffer has many years of
experience providing case
management services in the
healthcare and long-term
care fields.
The Neighborhood
Advisor program is part
of the Onondaga County
Department of Adult &
Long Term Care Services.
For more information
about the JCC’s
Neighborhood Advisor, and to make a
Senior Scams and Identity
Fraud presentation June 30
The JCC will host a Senior
Scams and Identity Fraud
presentation on Friday,
June 30 as part of its
senior kosher lunch. Lunch
will be served at noon and the presentation will
begin at approximately 12:20 p.m. There is a
$4.00 suggested contribution for the lunch for
seniors age 60 and older. Anyone wishing to
attend the presentation only at 12:20 p.m. is
welcome to do so at no cost.
The presentation will provide practical tips
on identifying and dealing with scams and
identity fraud schemes targeting seniors. It will
be given by a postal inspector with the Postal
Customer Council Board of the United States
Postal Service.
Plant a tree in Israel—without
getting your hands dirty!
If you’ve ever wanted to make our world a
little greener—whether right here in New
York or in a desert region such as Israel—
the JCC of Syracuse can help. And, you
don’t have to get your hands dirty to make
it happen!
The JCC
of Syracuse
is continuing
its fundraiser
to have trees
planted in
Israel and at
various other locations around the world,
including here in the United States. To
support this initiative, simply purchase a
“Plant a Tree” card from the JCC. Then go
online according to the card’s instructions
to have your tree planted at one of more
than 35 reforestation sites around the
world. Each card costs $18 or you can buy
five and get one free.
“Plant a Tree” cards may be purchased
over the phone or in person from the
JCC’s main entrance receptionist, Jerome
and Phyllis Charney Early Childhood
Development Program or Neulander
Family Sports & Fitness Center. Donors
may choose to have their tree donation
benefit the JCC’s After School Program,
Early Childhood Development Program,
Sports & Fitness Center, PJ Library in CNY
or Seniors Department. Tree donations
also may be designated as a tribute in
honor or memory of someone special.
“We’re really pleased to be rolling
out this type of fundraiser,” said JCC
of Syracuse Executive Director Marci
Erlebacher. It’s a first for us and a great way
for our supporters to help out their chosen
JCC program while making a positive
impact on the environment.”
As a dry desert region, Israel has
limited trees and no natural forests. Thus
all forests must be hand-planted, which
Israel has done quite successfully. In less
than 60 years Israel has become one of only
two countries with a net gain in its number
of trees.
persons listed above, hereby agree to the following:
I am applying for membership with the Jewish
Community Center (JCC) of Syracuse. I agree to
abide by its rules and bylaws. I understand that all
commitment. If paying by monthly automatic payments
from a credit card, I authorize the JCC of Syracuse to
automatically charge my credit card account for each
consecutive month of the plan.
cancel a membership for any reason at any time with
appropriate notice. I understand that membership
is not transferable and membership dues are
