as the summer holiday finally arrives 

– and the weather forecasts provide 

encouraging news that ‘summer could 

actually arrive’ – we’re sure our summer

Molly’s news... 

We started up in 2000 as purely a juniors 

club but included a ladies section several 

years later to feed our growing girls into. 

All of our coaches, managers and 

committee members are volunteers. 

We have been an FA Charter Standard 

Club since 2012 – probably the first Club in 

the County to achieve this. 

All of our coaches are either a minimum 

of FA Level 1 or are waiting to attend a 

course. They are all CRB checked. 

Our aims are quite simply – 3 F’s – Fun, 

Friendship and Fitness. 

The teams we have for the 2013/14 season 

commencing in September are an U14, 

U16 and 2 ladies teams. 

We are also hoping to have an U11 or 12 

team (or both) plus an U13 team. 

For these we are in need of new players, in 

particular from school years 4 – 7 (years for 

the new school year). 

In addition to these teams we have 2 other 

sections that come along to training: 

Mini-Griffs – for 7 – 9 year olds (some of 

whom will hopefully be part of any new 

teams) 

Micro-Griffs – 5/6 year olds.

...Lincoln Dances Festival 

LINCOLN DANCES 

FESTIVAL 

July 20th-August 3rd 

Dancing in the Streets, have-ago 

workshops, masterclasses 

and a showcase are among the 

highlights of this year’s Lincoln 

Dances festival, which runs from 

July 20 to August 3. 

And young dancers from Lincolnshire will 

be showing off their talents as part of the 

event. 

Dancers as young as seven will feature in 

the Dancing in the Streets day in Lincoln 

High Street on Saturday July 20 and in the 

festival’s Showcase finale performance at 

Lincoln Drill Hall on Saturday August 3. 

Lincoln High Street will come alive on 

Saturday July 20 from 10am-4pm for 

a special day of dance performance, 

workshops and demonstrations. 

Alex Law from Rhythm in Movement has 

pupils taking part in both the dance day 

and the showcase evening. 

A group from Lincoln aged 10 upwards 

has been working on a piece in partnership 

with Classes by Kat which fuses street 

and contemporary dance, while a 

Gainsborough-based group aged eight 

upwards are performing street dance. 



Alex said: “I decided to get involved 

with the festival as both groups have 

been working very hard, learning the 

choreography and having input creating 

sections of the dance. I think it is important 

to give them regular performance 

opportunities to gain skills like confidence 

and teamwork and to show parents and 

friends what they have achieved.” 

The festival wants people to dust off their 

dancing shoes at a series of free workshops 

that kick off with street dance at 2pm and 

rock’n’roll at 2.30pm in the High Street on 

July 20, where everyone can have a go. 

Lincoln Dances co-ordinator Sara Bullimore 

said: “This festival is a great opportunity to 

either enjoy watching others dance or to 

join in yourself.” 

The festival finale takes place at Lincoln 

Drill Hall on Saturday August 3 at 7.30pm 

where professionals and invited guests will 

perform alongside local dancers.

Lincoln Dances is part of Lincoln BIG’s

Lilac Theatre Dance offers expert and 

professional dance tuition in Jazz, Ballet, 

Tap, Lyrical, Street and Contemporary. 

All pupils take regular examinations with IDTA 

(we have a 100% pass rate) and participate in an

YOU WILL NEED:

Sweetie Sculptures 

All children love sweets but did you know they can be 

educational and fun as well as tasty? The kiddies will 

love trying some super sweetie construction with this 

creative and fun family activity. 

METHOD: 

1. Simply use the sweets to secure the cocktail sticks in 

place to make flat or 3D shapes, patterns and pictures. 

So simple! 

What will you try making first? Maybe have some 

sweetie maths fun with 2D and 3D shapes? Or how 

about spelling out your name or have a family 

competition to build the tallest tower you can? You could 

even make some sweet kebabs to enjoy on a summer 

picnic, party or movie night. Great fun for all the family. 

(If you’re trying this activity with very young children 

you might prefer to use dried spaghetti and giant 

marshmallows for easier handling.) 

Bubble Snakes 

All children love bubbles, 

but have they ever made a 

Bubble Snake before? This 

simple and cheap activity is 

great fun for the garden or 

bath and really quick and 

easy to put together. 


• a clean empty 

plastic bottle 

• an elastic band 

• a piece of old towel 

or a flannel 

• washing up liquid 

• a bowl 

METHOD: 

1. Remove the bottle lid and cut off the bottle base. 

(A bread knife works well.) 

2. Cover the cut bottle end with a piece of towel or 

flannel and secure into place with the elastic band. 

3. Squeeze about a cm depth of washing up liquid 

into the bowl and mix with the same amount of water. 

4. Dip the cut end of the bottle into the mixture until 

the towelling is wet through. 

5. Blow through the bottle opening and watch the 

bubbles snake down. 

Have fun making the longest snake you can! You 

could also try making rainbow snakes by dipping the 

towelling into different coloured paints too.

Sensory Play Goo! 

Sensory play is great fun for 

children of all ages and this 

simple recipe uses just 3 cheap 

items. It’s a great activity for 

METHOD: 

1. Cut the bottom seam off the bin bag so it opens 

into a large rectangle. This is a great base for sensory 

play as you can move it around easily & just throw 

it away when you’ve finished so cleaning up is quick 

and easy. 

2. Let the children squirt shaving foam & spoon on 

cornflour to their heart’s content. It’s nice to let them 

have the opportunity to feel & play with the two 

ingredients separately before mixing them together 

as they have such different textures & qualities. 

3. Add other objects like sticks, marbles & pebbles 

and your children’s favourite play things like action 

figures or cars. Some children may just like to explore 

the textures and make patterns with their hands and 

other objects, others may create small world scenes... 

perhaps it will become an arctic sea and ice caps for 

their polar bears or a swamp for their dinosaurs or 

maybe an enchanted bog full of fairies and elves? 

4. As children play, the 2 ingredients will begin to mix 

and their texture and consistency will start to change. 

If you keep adding cornflour to the shaving foam you 

can even create a dough type substance that can 

then be moulded into different shapes too. (The mix 

can be kept for a few days in a sealed plastic bag.)

Lincoln by 

the Sea 

city beach is ready to return 

Get your buckets & spades 

ready – Lincoln by The Sea is 

about to make a comeback! 

After its runaway success over the past 

three years, Lincoln’s beach will return 

to City Square signalling lots of fun for 

families during the Summer Holidays. 

The Beach will be “ready to go” on 

Monday, July 22 and will be open 

everyday between 10am-4pm until 

end of play on Saturday, August 31. 

It offers families a great opportunity 

to take a break from the shopping, 

pull up a deckchair and let the 

children play in Lincoln BIG’s super 

9m x 12m sandpit. 

Alongside the beach there will be 

fairground rides to enjoy and, from 

time to time, other entertainment 

such as Punch and Judy shows and 

children’s entertainers will be on site, 

enhancing the seaside atmosphere. 

(Lincoln’s Punch & Judy Festival is 

on July 27). 

If the sun is out, the beach area will 

often open earlier than usual and 

stay open a bit later, especially on 

Thursdays, when it will support the 

local shops which stay open until 7pm, 

as part of Lincoln’s Alive after 5 on 

Thursday offer.

“People can pop along to the beach 

for 10 minutes or make an entire 

day of it in the city. Either way, it’s 

totally free to use the beach and the

Ruddocks of 

Lincoln 

noticing the difference 

Henry Ruddock, chairman of Ruddocks of Lincoln, father 

of twins Sarah & John (aged 8 ) – talks to Molly’s Guide 

about the difference between his two children... 

I was going to write about garden toys, but 

as summer happened on the first day of the 

Lincolnshire Show, too late! 

Have you noticed how different boys and 

girls are? Having twins – just 8 years-old 

(Why do you think Ruddocks started a Toy 

Department?!) I have often been asked what 

sex (answer: one of each), and then (wait for 

it) “are they identical?” I mean it makes you 

wonder what people do with their time. It’s 

not just that difference though, they learn in 

such different ways. The girl can do sums and 

spelling, seemingly only needing to be told 

once. School is for girls. 

It’s like boys have so much going on in 

their heads (even at that age…) that they 

don’t even have ears. Either that or they are 

wired differently. Maybe both? He struggles 

with adding two single numbers (really), 

even though he is clearly not stupid. Good 

gloating opportunity for girl. 

Wife (credit where 

it’s due) bought 

“Shut the Box” a 

few days ago to 

help. This has 

12 wooden flaps 

numbered 1-12, 

closed according to 

the numbers thrown 

on two dice (and if 

anyone can find a 

shorter way of describing the game let me 

know). More interesting, a seven could close 

a 1, 2 and 4 (or 3 and 4, or 5 and 2). Ever 

noticed how competition aids learning for 

boys? Shame it’s not allowed these days. No 

wonder he can’t add. 

As for spelling, I am still recovering from the 

shock when he readily agreed to do them 

yesterday. It’s usually “Noooooo!!” Life really 

is full of surprises.

Hawtonville and Balderton 

Children’s Centre is situated 

on Bowbridge Road, Newark, 

in the old Oliver Quibell 

School site. 

The Centre offers families with children of 

0-5 years, extra help and support and offers 

a range of activities for families including 

breast feeding support, play sessions, baby 

massage, nutritional sessions, toddler talk, 

yoga, weaning support and also supports 

partners with local events. 

Family support is offered to families with 

children 0-12 years. Adult education and 

development is also available and courses 

such as creative crafts, confidence building, 

English and maths are on offer from the 

Children’s Centre or through local partners. 

A crèche is usually offered for these courses. 

The Centre will be delivering a summer 

programme of activities running from 22nd 

July to 7th September. These sessions will be 

open for children aged 0-5 years and older 

siblings are welcome. The centre’s outdoor 

area will be open weekdays from 9am-4pm.

Stay and Play sessions are for the whole 

family to come along and join in with creative

Autism is a neuro-developmental condition that 

affects how people make sense of the world around 

them. People who have been diagnosed with an 

autistic spectrum disorder typically have difficulties 

in three main areas: communication, imagination & 

interaction. Many also experience sensory issues, 

such as extreme sensitivity to sound.

PAACT is a group of parents and carers whose 

children are on the autistic spectrum. Our aim is 

to provide help, support and advice. We hold 

both evening and daytime support meetings 

for parents and carers. The evening meetings 

are held at St Peter and St Paul’s church hall on 

Skellingthorpe Road, Lincoln at 7.30pm on the first 

Thursday of each month. They are an opportunity 

to have a drink and a chat, share what’s on your 

mind and meet people dealing with similar issues. 

Our daytime meetings are at the same place on 

the third Thursday of the month at 10am. 

We also organise subsidised activities for our 

children and young people during the holidays; 

we have hired Fun Farm and Playzone, met for ice 

creams and crazy golf at Daisy Made and visited 

the fire station. We have a busy summer schedule 

planned too! We also hold a monthly games club 

for members over the age of 8.

Certainly getting involved with a sport will 

help keep them fit and healthy, give them the 

opportunity to grow in confidence and will 

expose them to social situations where they 

will make friends & most importantly have fun! 

My little man is quite small for his age and 

to date has only really shown an interest in 

tennis so you could imagine my surprise 

when he asked “Mummy, can I go to 

Kickboxing?”

I decided to pay a visit to Lincoln Kickboxing 

Academy and talk to Shawn Burton who is 

a professional in Martial Arts. Shawn started 

learning Karate at the age of 6 and attained 

black belt level. From the age of 15, Shawn 

has competed in Kickboxing competitions all 

over the world. 

I asked Shawn about kickboxing and whether 

it would be right for my son….. 

What age can a child start kickboxing classes? 

“Children can start as young as 3 years old! At LKBA, 

we have years of experience in teaching at all levels 

and age. Many of the coaches bring their own children 

to classes and we do encourage experienced members 

of the Junior Squad Training Programme to assist with 

classes. This shows the younger members what they can 

aspire to with hard work.” 

Why choose Kickboxing over football, cricket, tennis, 

netball and other main stream sports? 

“This is an exciting sport that anybody can do! It’s 

about mixing fun with discipline and learning life skills. 

Kickboxing allows children to set their own goals and 

targets, whether they want to be World Champion, 

gain Black Belt status or whether they just want to meet 

friends and have fun.”

How would kickboxing contribute to a child’s 

level of fitness? 

“Kickboxing is great exercise and uses every 

muscle in the body. This is a great cardiovascular 

sport and in comparison to football will burn 

more energy in 45 minutes compared to 

90 minutes of playing football.” 

How safe would my child be in a kickboxing 

environment? 

“The coaching staff at LKBA have over 100 years’ 

experience between them. We don’t let the 

children fight (spar) with each other at all. The 

children will only spar with qualified instructors.” 

How many girls are currently interested in 

kickboxing compared to boys? 

We have quite a few girls at the Academy, 3 girls 

have green belt status and working towards Blue 

Belt grading. We also have ladies only classes.” 

Are your instructors CRB checked? 

“Yes, all of our instructors have fully enhanced 

CRB checks & are fully insured & first aid trained.” 

What life skills would kickboxing and other 

martial arts give my child? 

“Respect, discipline, social skills, general 

awareness, concentration, self-esteem and 

self-confidence.” 

I have to admit, I left Lincoln Kickboxing 

Academy with a very different picture of the 

sport than the one I went in with. If you would

The School of Psychology at the University 

of Lincoln invites children from 3-10 years 

old (and their parents) to become scientists 

in a morning or afternoon of free fun games 

and exciting research studies. 

Children take part in a variety of research 

games which explore fascinating aspects 

of how children develop, for example, 

how do we pay attention to things around 

us, how do we learn to share, how can we 

coordinate our hands and how do children 

approach risky decisions? 

Each of these studies is a game children 

play before we explain and show the clever 

ways in which we measure behaviour. In 

between these research games, children are 

entertained by a host of other fun activities 

led by a team of trained psychology

It’s our birthday! 

The family attraction celebrates its 25th birthday 

this year and there isn’t much the team doesn’t 

know about providing a fun day out for people of 

all ages. 

With dozens of animals to get close to, and lots of 

fun activities, there’s enough to keep even the most 

difficult-to-please youngster happy for the whole 

day, whether they’re a first-timer or regular visitor. 

Visitors to White Post Farm can hold and feed some 

baby animals and meet some creepy crawlies and 

reptiles – both big and small. 

There’s an indoor play area, trampoline, bouncy 

castle and 12-hole mini-golf course. The record 

for getting around the course is 29 shots. Can you 

do better? 

The White Post Farm shop is a great place to pick 

up locally reared meat, fresh fruit, veg, bread and 

ice cream. 

The shop has also started stocking some amazing 

local ales, including a delicious range from the Blue 

Money Brewery. 


White Post farm celebrates their 25th birthday 

Peppa Pig and Octonauts have already visited the farm 

this year. But if you missed them, don’t worry – there are 

plenty of other opportunities to meet your favourite TV 

characters on selected days this year. 

First off, Fireman Sam will be taking a break from his 

emergency call outs to visit the farm on Wednesday, July 24, 

while Moshi Monsters fans will be able to meet several of 

these lovable characters throughout the day on Saturday, 

August 17. The following Saturday, August 24, Tree Fu Tom 

will take a break from his usual adventures at Treetopolis and 

will bring some of his magic to White Post Farm. 

Another children’s favourite, Mike the Knight, will make it his 

quest to visit White Post Farm on Saturday, November 23. 

Visitors can turn up on the day to any of the events, or can 

pre-book, saving 20% on admission.

Cogglesford 

Watermill 

The word sheriff evolved from the words 

‘shire’ and ‘reeve’. The Reeve was an 

agent or official of the Lord of the Manor 

(or Shire) who collected payment from 

local people who were obliged to have 

their grain ground at Cogglesford 

Watermill. 

Although the present mill was probably 

built around 1750, with the top floor added 

in the 1840s, millers have produced flour 

on this site since c 700AD. The mill is 

mentioned in the Domesday Book 

The Grade 2 listed three-storey mill has 

an internal wooden waterwheel and two 

sets of millstones which visitors can watch 

in operation on special milling days (2nd 

Saturday of the month from March to Dec).

This historic watermill is thought 

to be the only ‘sheriff’s’ watermill 

still in operation in the country. 

Organic wholemeal flour is produced just as 

it would have been 200 years ago. Visitors 

can discover the fascinating characters and 

events that shaped the mill’s history, from 

its Anglo Saxon origins to present day. 

The Mill shop sells flour, locally sourced and 

crafted produce and small gifts, toys and 

souvenirs, and best of all, admission is free. 

Cogglesford Watermill is situated in a 

picturesque setting on the River Slea, in 

the market town of Sleaford. It helps to 

form a heritage “triangle” of attractions 

– Cogglesford Watermill, The National 

Centre for craft and Design, and Navigation 

House, (a restored canal office), are all 

joined by footpaths along the same halfmile 

stretch of the River Slea.

history of R.A.F Cranwell... 

Housed in a farm building at North Rauceby 

near Sleaford and overlooking R.A.F. Cranwell 

and R.A.F. College Cranwell, Cranwell Aviation Heritage Centre 

portrays the remarkable history of this Royal Air Force station. 

Originally the first military academy in the 

world, RAF Cranwell started life as a Royal 

Naval base, known as HMS Daedalus with a 

special ‘Lighter than Air’ section providing 

observation hot air balloons. Following the 

birth of the Royal Air Force 1st April 1918, 

the base then became known as RAF 

Cranwell. 

Many famous events took place there 

including the development of the jet 

engine by Frank Whittle who worked on his 

design and tested engines at the station. 

Many famous people, passed through its 

impressive College Hall building. 

Cranwell Aviation Heritage Centre tells the 

story and features displays, artefacts, video

a flight simulator. Children and adults can 

try their hands at landing an aircraft on the 

runway at RAF Cranwell, drop a supply load

their military Summer Festival which will 

include displays from the Fire Museum (based

I have always been an arty/crafty type 

of a person. I grew up with the hum of 

a sewing machine in the background as 

my mum used to make all my clothes 

when I was little, maybe this is why I 

now sew, it has been subconsciously 

ingrained into me! 

I left a 10 year teaching career to have 

my first child, my gorgeous little boy, 

and my husband and I decided I would 

be a stay at home mum and bring up our 

son, I personally didn’t want to miss a 

thing while at work. I found it quite sad 

at how quickly he outgrew his clothes 

and when the opportunity came to start 

a little business making keepsakes from 

baby clothes, I jumped at the chance 

and Oh Sew Little was born. 

I have been running Oh Sew Little solely 

since November 2012. I transform your 

baby’s precious clothes into a beautiful 

keepsake to treasure forever!

After having my second child in 2010, I 

knew I wouldn’t be able to return to work 

full time - childcare costs would exceed 

my earnings! So the plan was to work part 

time around my partner’s atypical shifts, 

which I did, however the love for my job of 

11 years had subsided and I just wanted to 

spend time with my family. 

Around the same time I had made a 

few things for my family in America for 

Christmas. I decided I would send them all 

something nice and light - cushion covers 

and bunting for each child. 

The power of social media took over as I 

uploaded photos of what I had made - I 

was quite proud! 

Friends started asking if I would make them 

something, it snowballed, & I would never 

have expected to be where I am today!

...Daddy Day Care 

How do you give a name to 

someone you’ve never met? 

I mean the baby names thing... 

To me it seems a bit high risk dishing 

out monikers like Nigel, Claire and 

Richard just to take the heat off having 

an unnamed baby in your house. 

I’m a bit of an expert in this field. And 

by that I mean I have no expertise in this 

whatsoever. 

In fact, when my twins were born I think 

they went a good six days before we 

settled on names for them. I remember 

someone buying me a book to try to 

speed up the process. It was called 

1,001 baby names. How is that helpful? 

My wife asked me to come up with a 

list of 10, and I just scraped past eight. 

Eight of which she didn’t like.

Basically, we had no names because was 

became convinced that we were having 

girls, based on nothing more than Sara 

was sick throughout her pregnancy and 

she has a sister who had two girls. Her 

mum also had two girls, so there was a 

bit of form... 

So when two boys popped out, the 

list of 10 and eight female names we’d 

chosen seemed like a track listing for 

a Greatest Love Songs double LP and 

pretty irrelevant. 

And so it began. A series of lively 

discussions with the missus at a time 

when you are not thinking straight. 

For that reason I can forgive the Tiger 

Lilies, Brooklyns and Barcardis of this 

world. Kids, you need to know your 

mums and dads were just too tired to 

think straight. 


Suddenly in the 

search for a name, 

every potential name 

becomes judged on 

merit. Only it’s not 

just judged on merit. 

It is also judged on 

whether someone 

else has that name 

already and has 

annoyed you at some 

point. 

I think this theory, 

based on my expertise (i.e nothing), is 

keeping the name Timothy alive. 

No one was ever annoyed by a Timothy. 

Nigel - wears bad ties, Claire - complete cow 

at work, Richard - always irritatingly good at 

everything. But Timothy? That’s a safe one. 

As we’d had twins I put in a bid for Ronnie 

and Steve as in Lane and Marriott - the song 

writers in the Small Faces. They even look 

like the Small Faces. Cool as my concept 

was, it cut no ice. 

Eric and Ernie was used jokingly until we 

agreed on their proper names - George 

and Joseph. And yes, we played it safe 

with a couple of classics. Only to learn that 

by coincidence my both my Grandads had 

brothers and uncles that were George and 

Joseph - and everyone was delighted at the 

decision. Phew! 

Now the boys just are George and Joseph. 

I never think they should’ve been called 

anything else. So my advice is, if it sounds 

alright, go for it. Although mum and dad, 

if you are reading this, why you named me 

Bobby Charlton and then changed it to 

Mark is a mystery to me. Oh - but I’ll let you 

off as you were probably too tired to think 

straight...

Arboretum Anniversary Community Fun Day

The APACT Parent Forum is a community group based at 

the Abbey Children’s Centre raising funds to pay for family 

based activities within the area. Community First funding 

awarded the group money to make this a fantastic family day 

for everyone. Local community groups will attend to provide 

information on what is available to families within the area, 

children’s activities such as bouncy castles, sport sessions, 

kite making, an under 5’s play area, music man session, 

balloon modeller & much more. Cost: free. Something for all
