memories..." while I reflect on some 

wonderful, relaxing times away with my wife. 

But these days the sun, sea and sangria have 

been replaced with stress, sickness and sleep 

deprivation. How is that a holiday? 

We took a week in an apartment in a UK 

holiday village and I have to admit if you take 

out the tiredness, the nagging responsibility of 

keeping my children alive and the military 

operation of packing to get there, we had a 

great time.

I got into the spirit of being a dad on holiday 

and bought a pair of khaki shorts and some 

sandals (no socks by the way... what do you 

take me for?). I packed some clean underwear 

Lincoln-born journalist Mark Charlton's 

life changed dramatically when his twins 

were born three years ago. Here he 

describes his experiences in his 

'daddydaycare diary'... 

By the time you read this you will have 

probably got back from a holiday. In fact, you 

are probably on the brink of taking the vacuum 

to the back of the car to get the last of the 

sand out of the rear foot-well or simply 

thinking about your credit card statement and 

crying your eyes out. Anyway, welcome home. 

I had my first break with my three-year-old 

twins this summer and I went into it hoping to 

discover what the attraction of a family 

holiday is. 

I love the idea of a relaxing vacation. In fact, I 

wistfully think back to those pre-parenthood 

days of sun, sea and sangria as Barbara

Daddy Daycare 

On a family holiday you get so engrossed in 

activities with your children - swimming, 

biking, swings and slides that you get chance 

to forget about the stresses and strains of 

everyday life. Work goes on the back-burner 

and in the madness of all the running around, 

organising and battering the contents of your 

wallet, you get some quality time with your 

children that you'll never find in the grind of 

the 9 to 5. 

And that, after you've unpacked your bags, got 

the sand out of your car and finally paid off 

your credit card bill, is you will look back at 

and appreciate what the attraction of a family 

holiday is.

and a couple of t-shirts and that was me. Job 

done. Holiday clobber sorted in a small bag. So 

it begs the question: Why was my car so full? 

The rear window filled with pillows, potties, 

foldable chairs, and an arbitrary shoe stuffed 

behind a head rest etc. etc. Thankfully, it 

wasn’t just my car that looked like a charity 

shop display created by Mr Trebus, all the cars 

entering the resort looked just as bad. Some 

cars looked as bad and had a roof-rack. That's 

a lot of stuff. But there's nothing wrong with 

that. The one thing you leave at home will be 

the one thing you need. "I told you to bring 

that solar powered egg timer, but would you 

listen? Oh no..."

Starting School 

The first few days have gone well. Your 

four-year old has seemingly taken to 

primary school like a duck to water and has 

been happily skipping into the classroom 

without so much as a second glance as 

you’re wiping a tear from your eye. 

But a few days later, you’re at the school gates 

and your little one is clinging to your trouser 

leg, begging you not to leave. It’s not 

uncommon, says primary school teacher 

Jennifer Bayley. “Children do have wobbles,” 

she says. “They can come in excited for the first 

few days and then become clingy after that.” 

Even if your child is used to being away from 

you, such as being at nursery, starting primary 

school is a big change in their daily life and 

even confident kids can be affected. It might 

be because there are changes at home, such as 

an impending house move or they could be 

picking up on mum’s nervousness. “I have seen 

parents who are so upset about their child 

starting school that they pass this on 

unintentionally,” adds Mrs Bayley, a teacher 

at Little Gonerby Church of England 

Infant School. “Parents need to be very 

positive and talk about the transition of 

starting school, but try not to show their own 

fears or emotions.” If faced with a child who 

doesn’t want to come to school, Mrs Bayley 

says: “The best method is to allow the parent 

to enter the classroom and help settle the 

child but if this makes the child more upset 

and clingy we tend to sit with them and ask 

the parent to leave. We tell the parent we will 

telephone them later once the child has 

settled down.” 

Emma Ryland’s son William started school last 

September and was one of the youngest in the 

year. Emma says: “He couldn't wipe his own

bottom, blow his nose, open a bag of crisps 

or open his lunch box,” she says. “These issues 

gave me anxiety. He was used to doing two, 

10-hour days at nursery but going to school 

five days a week made him very tired and by 

Thursday or Friday we had lots of tears and 

tantrums about petty things. For the first half 

of the term, he came home with his lunch box 

still almost full. He said he didn't have enough 

time to eat because he wanted to play. 

William loves school now. When my younger 

son, Lewis, starts school I won’t be so worried 

about him – I will be more worried about 

myself in an empty house.” 

Tips 

• Get your child into an ‘early to bed on school 

nights’ routine. 

• Label their clothes and show them where the labels 

are so they are less likely to lose things. 

• Show them how to fold clothes and keep them 

together – losing clothes after a PE lesson can be 

upsetting for a small child. 

• Be confident at the school gate – no crying until 

your child is out of sight! 

• Tell the teacher about any changes to home life. 

• Ensure you are on time to drop them off and pick 

them up from school. 

• Give them time to unwind when they get home and 

limit the number of term-time evening activities.

Lapland Holidays

Lapland lies in the Arctic Circle and is 

famously known as the home of Santa. 

Although you can visit at any time of the 

year the most popular time to travel to 

Lapland is the winter season, which spans

A Lincoln mum has set up an online shop 

to help parents of children with special 

educational needs (SEN). She told Molly’s 

Guide about her site and how it 

came about. 

Most children moan about school from time to 

time, but for a minority, the mere thought can 

make them sick with dread, because they have 

special educational needs (SEN) that aren’t 

recognised. SEN take many forms, but there is 

one common factor. The effect on the child – 

and the wider family – can be devastating. 

Lincoln mum Ann Beck knows first hand about 

the devastation. Her son, who has behavioural 

and learning difficulties including dyslexia, 

became a ‘school refuser’ as a result of his 

fear of failure. 

Following her own experiences with her son 

she’s now set up www.thegiftoflearning.co.uk, 

a website selling affordable learning resources 

for parents of children with SEN. 

Ann says: “The crisis point came when he was 

in year six, his final year at primary school. His 

frustration with his own difficulties in school 

manifested itself in an anxiety disorder which 

left him labelled a ‘school refuser’ – the 

reality was that he was so fearful of failure 

that he ran away from school regularly and 

isolated himself from school life for six 

months, during which time I became his carer 

and teacher.” 

“I had teachers say to me: ‘With all due 

respect, you can’t even get him to school’. 

“They hadn’t seen him that morning with his 

head down the toilet because he had made 

himself sick with worry. Once he climbed out 

of the window on to the roof to avoid school. 

We have had the police out looking for him 

when he has run away.” Ann adds: “When I was 

trying to help him learn at home, it was hard 

to know where to go for resources that I 

could afford. 

“Some resources are very expensive, but there 

are lots of affordable options. I spent so much 

time pulling my hair out trying to help him. I 

thought there must be other people out there 

that are going through the same problems. 

“I needed to build his self esteem and convince 

him that he was not only able to learn but it 

could be an enjoyable experience too.” 

The website offers information on learning 

difficulties that come under the SEN label, 

including autism, dyslexia, Asperger syndrome, 

and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder 

(ADHD) and links to helpful organisations. 

Ann will provide tips on ideas for affordable 

learning, she’ll also write regular blogs and 

will have guest bloggers who have been 

through similar experiences.

“I’m a single parent with two children. It had a

she adds. “It is extremely difficult for a parent 

because the judgment that goes with it is 

immense. People questioned my parenting and

and there was nowhere to go for help.

Stuck for ideas of how to 

entertain the kids this October 

half-term?

Early Years Foundation 

Last summer the new Government 

implemented a review to see how the EYFS 

was working and whether it required change. 

The outcome of this is the ‘revised EYFS’ 

which now comes into place September 2012’ 

‘Many parents may not have heard much about 

this and certainly as a nursery company we are 

playing down the changes, as they should be 

‘tweaks’ rather than a big overhaul. Children 

in nurseries or with child-minders should 

certainly not see any difference. So, what will 

change in the revised framework?’ 

Three years ago, the Government 

introduced the first formal framework for 

pre-school children, called the ‘Early 

Years Foundations Stage’. This was a 

regulatory framework which all early 

years’ providers were obliged to follow, if 

they were to be registered with OFSTED. 

This included child-minders, nursery 

schools and day nurseries, in addition to 

out of school clubs caring for children 

aged up to the end of the Reception class. 

Sarah Steele, Managing Director of The Old 

Station Nursery Group said ‘It caused some 

concern in the media, with cries of ‘the nappy 

curriculum’ and it certainly caused some 

headaches for providers, with a considerable 

increase in record keeping and measuring 

children’s progress.

Areas of learning & development: now consist 

of three prime areas and four specific areas. 

The prime areas cover the knowledge and 

skills which are the foundations for children’s 

school readiness and future progress, which 

are applied and reinforced by the 

specific areas. 

2. 

Early learning goals and assessment: instead of 

69 goals, there will now be 17. Progress check 

at age two: the revised EYFS introduces a 

requirement for providers to review children’s 

progress when a child is aged between two and 

three. A short written summary must be 

provided to parents or carers, highlighting 

achievements and areas in which extra support 

might be needed, in addition to describing 

how the provider will address any issues.

Play and teaching: it has been made clearer 

that providers are responsible for ongoing 

judgments about the balance between play 

and teaching, between activities led by 

children and activities led or guided by adults.

English as an additional language: the relevant 

requirements give clearer focus on the 

reasonable steps providers must take, 

including the assessment of children’s skills 

in English.

Wrap-around and holiday care: the framework 

now makes clear that the EYFS requirements 

do not need to be delivered in full when

for school. However, you may notice increased 

emphasis on skills that will help children in 

larger classes; you may want to chat to your 

nursery to see how you can help with this.’

be scared out of your skin on our creepy 

Halloween Trail, which will lead you if you make 

it to a delicious and ghoulish treat! There is a 

charge of £2.00 per child for this event. All 

children must be accompanied by an adult. 

There are toilets and refreshments at the park.

Young Artist Big Draw Day with Phil Bowman 

The natural World Centre – Whisby

Open to all young artists from 12 to 100 years old! 

Working within the landscape we will push 

drawing to the max by adding natural materials to 

our list of drawing media. This is a perfect chance 

if you’ve wanted to do something arty but 

haven’t had the courage as Phil guides you
