ANDY
Andy Schleck

ANDY represents the third generation of Luxembourg’s Schleck cycling family. His
Grandfather Auguste [Gustav] raced in the 1920s as an independent, gaining third
in the national road championship. Auguste’s son Johny then raced as a full professional
[1965-74], assisting Jan Janssen and Luis Ocaña.
Both Johny’s sons Fränk and Andy followed in their father’s wheel tracks, turning pro
in 2002 and 2005 respectively. It was Andy who took the family trophy cabinet to a new
level, taking second in the 2009 Tour de France, behind Alberto Contador, at the same
time securing the Young Rider Classification title; going one better in 2010, which saw
Alberto Contador take a proxy victory - later revoked after a failed a doping test.
Both Fränk and Andy would take to the Tour podium in 2011 - the former taking
third, while Andy was runner up to Cadel Evans, by only one minute thirty-four
seconds. It was during this Tour, that Schleck gained probably his most memorable
victory - taking Stage 18 with an impressive ascent of the Col du Galibier.
ANDY représente la troisième génération de la famille luxembourgeoise Schleck
dans le cyclisme. Son grand-père, Auguste (Gustav) fit la course dans les années
20 en indépendant, remportant la troisième place. Le fils d’Auguste, Johny, fit ensuite la
course en professionnel (1965-1974), assistant Jan Janssen et Luis Ocana.
Les deux fils de Johny, Fränk et Andy suivirent les pas de leur père, devenant
professionnels respectivement en 2002 et 2005. Ce fut Andy qui porta l’armoire à
trophées de la famille à un autre niveau, arrivant deuxième au Tour de France 2009,
derrière Alberto Contador, obtenant également le titre de jeune cycliste ; et faisant
mieux en 2010 quand Alberto Contador remporta une victoire par procuration qui lui
sera plus tard retirée à la suite de résultats positifs au test anti-dopage.
Fränk et Andy furent sélectionnés pour le podium du Tour en 2011. Fränk prit la
troisième place alors qu’Andy fut juste après Cadel Evans, seulement une minute
trente-quatre secondes les séparaient. Lors de ce Tour de France, Schleck remporta
ce qui fut probablement sa plus belle victoire, il gagna l’étape 18 avec une ascension
impressionnante au Col du Galibier.
