WELCOME!
Welcome to the first issue of the Penwith Eye a new
monthly publication dedicated to Penwith. We hope
that this magazine will show our love of Penwith and
how proud we are to be Cornish.
We want to highlight the beauty, the people, the businesses, the
history and the heritage of our beautiful corner of the world.
This magazine is for you, so no matter where you are from, whether
you are a local, a regular visitor or someone who visited years ago
and fell in love with the area, we would really love your input.
You can be a part of this magazine by sending us any stories of
Penwith you have that you think may be of interest, be it factual,
historical, family orientated, recent, old or just downright funny
(everyone loves those) If you have any photographs old or new such
as historical photos, photos of the area, the people, events, perhaps a
beautiful view captured recently, we welcome them all. There must
be so many interesting photos that never get seen as they are simply
tucked away at home. Sharing stories and photographs are vital to
keep memories alive for future generations and we hope, with your
help, to play a part in this by featuring them in Penwith Eye.
Here at the Penwith Eye we love
chatting with new businesses and
finding out what makes them tick.
This month we met Shannen Louise
Bence, a mobile hairdresser and
Owner of S.L.B Hairdressing;
Did you always want to be a hairdresser?
Yes, I have always wanted to be a hairdresser from
a young age, I’ve always loved being creative and
hairdressing is the perfect job for me to be able
to do that.
What is it that you love about your job?
I think that there’s more to the job than people
think. It’s not just about making a client’s hair
look great, it’s the fact you have the ability to
change their whole day and make them feel so
much better about themselves, that’s definitely the
best bit of my job.
How did you qualify as a hairdresser?
I did my hairdressing training as an
apprenticeship in SHB Hair & Beauty (previously
known as Gary Stuart’s) That was where I gained
my NVQ2 & NVQ3. I loved being hands on
throughout my training.
I believe that in hairdressing you never stop
learning even once you’ve qualified. I’ve found
that there is always new stuff to learn whether
it’s a new colouring technique or a hair up you
can always expand your knowledge especially as
trends and fashions are always changing.
What made you decide to start up your
own business?
I’ve worked in a couple of salons since I qualified
four and a half years ago and met some great
friends. But In February this year I decided
to take the plunge and set up my own mobile
hairdressing business and S.L.B Hairdressing
was born. It was a scary thought but with
determination I knew I could do it
How has it been going so far?
So far it’s been amazing! I find that its much more
personal at someone’s home and it feels more
relaxed for both the client and myself. The support
from my friends, family and clients has been
brilliant. My clients mean the world to me because
without them my career wouldn’t be possible.
What areas do you cover?
I cover from Helston, Falmouth and Truro as
well as Penzance and surrounding areas.
What’s next for S.L.B Hairdressing?
I’ve always wanted my own business and my dream
is to convert a garage into a little salon once me and
my husband have brought our first home.
I’ve always wanted my own business but never
really fancied owning a salon on a high street so
coverting my own salon one day is my dream.
What do you think makes you stand out from
other hairdressers?
I can offer things that are a bit different from the
usual such as hair sparkless which have been very
popular. I also do children’s hair and am available
for children’s parties which include plaiting,
glitter hair and hair sparkles. I send clients
a confirmation message the day before their
appointment as a reminder, I have loyalty cards
to reward my regular clients, I even bring sweets
for children for after their haircuts. My aim is to
bring the salon experience to you in the comfort
of your own home.
Shannen is currently taking on new clients
and is also available for late appointments.
Be sure to keep an eye on her facebook page
which is regularly updated with photos of her
work, o ffers and competitions. You can also
book an appointment via her facebook page.
THE NATURAL HEALTH CENTRE
Encouraging the body to work naturally
The challenges and fast changing
demands of modern life can so occupy
our thoughts that we forget about the
most important consideration: ourselves,
and the importance of maintaining
our bodies so we can lead relaxed and
healthy lives.
Reflexology is a complementary
therapy that encourages the body to
work naturally to restore its
own balance.
A reflexologist does not claim to cure,
diagnose or prescribe. Reflexology is
based on the principle that all parts of
the body are reflected in the feet and
hands and by applying gentle pressure
to these areas it will have an effect on
the corresponding part of the body
and thus restore balance.
It is believed to have a history that
traces back 5,000 years to Ancient
Egypt, India and China. It was
introduced to the West in 1913 as ‘zone
therapy’ by Dr William Fitzgerald and
further developed by Eunice Ingham
in the 1930’s.
A reflexologist uses hands only to
apply gentle pressure to the feet.
For each patient, the application of
therapy is unique.
Sensitive, trained hands can detect
subtle changes in specific points on the
feet, in these areas the reflexologist will
work carefully to release the tension
and restore the flow of energy to the
whole system.
In doing this, tensions are eased,
elimination and circulation improved,
bringing about a feeling of relaxation
and wellbeing to the client. This gentle
therapy encourages the body to heal
itself at its own pace.
This therapy encourages the body to
heal itself after illness or injury; it is
extremely effective in relieving stress
and maintaining wellbeing once good
health has been restored.
If you would like to know more or to
book a reflexology appointment with
our resident reflexologist Clare Savage
then please contact Penzance Natural
Health Centre on 01736 365022.
CORNWALL’S
CHOCOLATE COVE
healthy eating but without the denial of pleasure
The founder, Judy Hedden started her chocolate
journey because after years of working in a very
stressful job, she felt continually exhausted and
ill. With a strong desire to make positive changes,
she took a leap and went back to college to study
Nutritional Therapy to try and bring back her
zing. But Judy soon realised that some ‘health
diets’ can be taken too far and have the opposite
effect. Judy explained, “There have been points
in my life when I’ve taken on strict diet regimes
to improve my health, but all that restriction
and denial just made me really miserable, which
negated all the good I was doing with the nutrition…the
one thing I missed when I was being so
pure, was a truly naughty, delicious treat – but I
didn’t enjoy the huge guilt I felt for having it…”
So with nutrition knowledge tucked in her bag,
she went in search of true happiness and found it
by combining her two great loves; chocolate and
travel. “I wanted to create a series of chocolates
that were as nutritious as possible, but that would
take the taster away on a luxurious journey
of discovery as each revealing layer of flavour
was uncovered.” Inspired by the crystal clear
turquoise of the open sea, and the wild forces of
nature, these chocolates are made with no cane
sugar but instead low GI, mineral rich coconut
sugar, vitamin rich lucuma, high antioxidant raw
cacao blended with slowly steeped flavours, it’s
no wonder they’re called the very healthy chocolate.
“We all work so hard, so let’s enjoy nutrition,
throw out denial and bring back balance with
good health through pleasure.”
Cornwall’s Chocolate Cove chocolates are
currently available at The Eden Project, Archie
Browns (Penzance & Truro), The Art of Wine
RECIPES FOR KIDS
Father’s Day Cupcakes
HEALTHY BOXES
Baked Frittata with Cornish New Potatoes
Food.
This simple cupcake recipe is a fab
one that the kids can make and decorate
for Father’s Day (please ensure
children are supervised by an adult
especially when using an oven.
INGREDIENTS
• 125g (4oz) unsalted butter softened
• 125g (4oz) caster sugar
• 125 (4oz) self-raising flour
• Tiny pinch of salt
• 2 medium eggs
• 2 tablespoons of milk
• 12 hole muffin tin & 12 paper cases
METHOD
1. Set the oven to 190C, (gas mark 5)
2. Tip the butter into a bowl and beat it
until softened.
3. Add the sugar, flour, salt, eggs and milk
and whisk until mixture is smooth.
4. Use a traditional-style ice-cream scoop
or spoon to divide the mixture between
all the paper cases
5. Place muffin tins in the oven and bake
for 15 minutes until cupcakes are a light
golden colour.
6. Remove the tin from the oven. Leave the
cupcakes to cool in the tin for a few minutes,
then transfer them to a wire rack.
7. Once cooled the cupcakes can be iced
and decorated. For an extra special
decoration why not let the children draw
little pictures or make little flags, tape
them to straws or cocktail sticks then
stick them in the cupcakes for a cute
finishing touch.
A simple seasonal recipe that’s
delicious hot or cold with a leafy salad
Wash 500g of Cornish early new potatoes,
rubbing away any dirt & loose skin. There’s no
need to peel them. Cut them into slices, about
the thickness of a pound coin.
Place into a small, shallow baking dish, about
15 x 25 cm. Toss the slices in some olive oil
& bake in the oven, at 160C, for 20 minutes.
Turn them occasionally. They should be soft
but not getting brown. Add a few sliced spring
onions to the potatoes & return to the oven for
another 5 minutes. Whisk 3 eggs together with
some salt & pepper, a tiny splash of water &
some finely choppedw parsley.
Pour the eggs over the cooked potatoes. For
a special treat place a few sticks of chargrilled
asparagus on top. Return to the oven for the
final time and bake for 10 minutes or until
the eggs are just set. Cook’s tip... this is a great
way to use up left over cooked potatoes - you
just need to slice them & heat with the spring
onions - your frittata will be ready even sooner!
CORNISH NICKNAMES
Did you know there were
nicknames given to Cornish
towns and villages in Victorian
times? They were not always
flattering but existed nonetheless.
The nicknames came about
for all sorts of reasons and were
related to locations and history.
Some were formed to reflect
occupations (hence a coastal
town known for fishing had
nicknames featuring fish). With
a little research, we believe
some of the names in Penwith
were as follows. Have you heard
of these before?
• Hayle - Bulldogs
• Marazion - Crows
• Mousehole - Cut throats or
Madagascar Birds
• Newlyn - Buccas
• Penzance - Scads (horse
mackerel) or Pirates
• St Buryan - Hogs
• St Ives - Hake Whippers
• St Just - Red Tailed Drones,
Bugs or Fuggans
• Zennor - Goats
WELCOME GOLOWAN 2017!
The feast of St John, Patron Saint of Penzance
Golowan is the feast of St John, Patron Saint of
Penzance. Midsummer was celebrated all over
Cornwall from the 23rd of June (St John’s Eve) up
until the 28th of June (St Peter’s Eve).
Golowan’s antics, rituals and customs included
the lighting of bonfires, rolling blazing tar barrels
down streets and burning torches. It was this that
contributed to Golowan dying out in the late 19th
century, it was deemed to be too much of a fire risk
making the insurance premiums too high.
Penzance was the last town to lose the tradition in
the 1890’s. Thankfully in 1991 the Golowan festival
was revived along with many of its traditions.
There are 3 main days to Golowan; Mazey Eve,
Mazey Day and Quay Fair Day.
Mazey Eve is centred around the harbour area of
Penzance. Celebrations kick off with the traditional
serpent dance. Penzance’s ‘Obby Oss’ Penglaz also
makes an appearance. Penglaz is a horse skull
representing fertility, he dances, leading people
through the streets to the sound of the traditional
Golowan tune played by the festival band.
Children love Mazey Eve especially the excitement
of staying up late to watch the fireworks at 11pm.
Crowds gather by the sea watching the fireworks
light up the night sky as they shoot out over the
sea. On Mazey Eve a Mock Mayor is elected after
candidates make ridiculous promises, much to the
amusement of a raucous crowd!
On the Saturday, it’s the main event; Mazey Day.
There is excitement in the air, roads are closed,
and stalls line the streets along with greenery,
decorations, flags and brightly coloured banners…
A truly amazing sight.
The beautifully handcrafted banners and flags are
created each year to reflect the year’s theme. The
vibrant decor continues from town to the front.
The Quay and The Promenade, even the Jubilee
Pool are dressed to impress with handmade flags
waving in the sea air.
Mazey Day is a culmination of amazing talent,
creativity and hard work from thousands of
children from the local schools. With the support
of their teachers and parents they have produced
themed costumes, an array of painted faces and
very impressive sculptures both big and small.
Once the hard work is over the children are
able to display their work to the public. They
proudly parade through thousands of spectators
accompanied by the sounds of school bands, live
music, and a Mazey Day favourite… The Samba
band. Year after year the creativity shown by the
school children is nothing short of amazing.
Sunday is Quay Fair Day. The fair is an obvious
must for the children but the day is great for all
ages. A relaxed atmosphere, a chance to walk
around, take your time, listen to some live music,
and follow your nose to a variety of stalls offering
food from all around the world.
Golowan is special, people come from all over the
world to experience it. It is a part of our heritage
and to be able to share that with people is amazing.
So, a big thankyou to all those involved in making
Golowan the success that it is…Golowan definitely
makes you feel proud to be Cornish!
style artefacts that adorn the walls and ceilings and
for the adults why not sample our famous Cornish
Mead wine… careful though it’s not for the
faint hearted!
and desserts and the restaurant is nestled on the
Harbour providing the perfect setting to end your
evening with a pleasant stroll.
day to explore the wide range of shops that Penzance
has to offer. There’s something for everyone
with popular high street retailers among quirky
independent outlets selling everything from books
newest titles as well as quirky finds and local titles.
beautiful surroundings too)
Sunday is the day for exploring the beautiful coast
that surrounds Penzance. Stroll along our famous
promenade with idyllic views of Mounts Bay and
growing in popularity with a range of quirky
galleries selling local art, restaurants and even a
cinema Newlyn Filmhouse (a recently converted
Newlyn Harbour and pop into Stevensons Fish; a
stone’s throw from the harbour where Stevenson’s
the ingredients for the perfect Cornish fish supper.
On your way back to Penzance no visit to Newlyn
is complete without a stop off at Jelberts Ice cream.
Don’t be deterred by the queue that’s usually
formed outside (when you taste its wares you’ll
soon see why!) This little shop has gained national
recognition and is owned by the parents of Olympic
Gold Rower Helen Glover…. We definitely think
they’re ice cream is medal worthy too!
spot a stone’s throw from the sea, there’s even a play
park next door for the kids to enjoy…. That’s if they
have an energy left after a fun filled trip to Penzance!
THE BANK SQUARE GALLERY
Born in the winter of 1960, Nicholas
Smith has been painting since a
child, starting his career soon after
leaving school. His early works
focused on wildlife, making his
attention to detail exquisite.
With a move to Cornwall in the 80s
Nicholas changed both medium
and subject matter and now paints
local scenes in the Penwith area
and further afield. Working in oils,
he still manages to get lots of detail
into his varied subjects, mostly
painted on panels or canvas.
Cornwall Contemporary is a
large, spacious art gallery set
out over three floors at the top
of historic Chapel Street in
Penzance. The ground floor is
used for changing exhibitions
whilst the upper two floors are
used for paintings by gallery
artists and special capsule
installations and exhibitions.
Exhibitions change monthly
and present the very best of
art in Cornwall and from out
of the county. Established and
highly respected artists exhibit
Working from his gallery in the
The term ‘wild swimming’ is used
to describe the act of swimming
in natural waters and thousands
of people go wild swimming in
Cornwall during the Summer
every year.
The group of swimmers that The Penwith
Eye had the pleasure of meeting with
recently is different.
They meet every day. The icy Atlantic
Ocean can take your breath away even on
the most glorious of Summer days, but
these brave Penzance Wild Swimmers are
not deterred; They swim every day of the
year, hence us referring to them as brave!
The group meet every day at Battery Rocks
in Penzance at 9.30am. They all agree that
their tradition is a great way to kick start
the day and that it offers much better views
than any gym.
WILD SWIMMING
in Penzance
Battery Rocks is named so due to a gun battery
situated there in the 1740’s which served as
protection from French naval attacks.
As the group happily greet each other
the bond of their friendship is clear to
see. They laugh and joke as they prepare
to swim… with not a single wetsuit in
sight! They swim in only a costume for the
ladies and shorts for the men, swim hats
and goggles…this attire remains the same
whether it is January or August.
Once ready they head straight into the
water…there is no hesitation, no stopping
to get used to the water, nothing, just
straight in, no messing! There is no
competition or expectation for everyone to
swim great lengths. As a group of people
of all different ages and abilities (Ken
Wrenshaw being the oldest at seventyseven)
each person swims within their
limit, whether swimming a mile or ten
metres they all support and encourage each
other along the way.
Most would agree that swimming is a
good form of exercise, but wild swimming
has many more health benefits than most
people realise. Historically, Doctors wrote
prescriptions advising patients to spend
time in the sea. Using sea water for medical
purposes is known as ‘Thalassotherapy’.
• The sea’s minerals make it beneficial
to people with skin conditions such as
Eczema and Psoriasis.
• The sea is associated with reducing
symptoms of Hay Fever, Sinusitis and
Respiratory problems.
• Frequent exposure to seawater is proven
to increase the body’s immunity levels
• In cold water Endorphins, Dopamine and
Serotonin are released. This could explain
The Wild Swimmer’s comments that wild
swimming makes them feel alive and
happy. It also reduces stress.
• According to NASA studies repeated
cold water swimming can lead to changes
known as ‘cold adaptation. These bring
down blood pressure and cholesterol,
boost the immune system, inhibit
blood clotting, reduce fat and increase
fertility and libido as well as reducing
susceptibility to heart problems.
And those are only a few of the
many benefits.
This group of friends are dedicated for
reasons other than the health benefits.
They appreciate the friendships they have
formed and their comradery for each
other. It simply makes them happy to enjoy
the companionship of like-minded people
whilst doing what they love and its clear
on meeting them that this is a gift they all
value greatly.
THE JUBILEE POOL
A Definite Jewel in Cornwall’s Crown
PENWITH EXILES FC
The Pride of Penwith!
What’s new.
Penzance’s art deco lido re-opens for
the Summer season on the 27th May.
Local lady the late Ursula Pascoe (nee
Ingleheart) was present when the pool
first opened in 1935. This was the year
of King George the fifth’s Silver Jubilee.
The Jubilee hasn’t always had it easy,
with its closure in 1992 due to a
desperate need to revamp and a further
closure in 2014 due to the severe storm
damage it suffered.
Throughout the years, the support of
the locals and the ‘Friends Of Jubilee
Pool’ have ensured the pool’s bright
future.
Ursula Pascoe was an avid supporter,
campaigner and fundraiser of the cause.
Ursula grew up swimming along the
prom, Battery Rocks and in The Jubilee
Pool. Amazingly she swam every day
in all weathers until the grand age of
ninety-three!
Ursula’s children, grandchildren and
family continued tradition and grew up
swimming in the pool too. So, with the
Lido due to reopen for the season we
felt it fitting to remember a remarkable
lady who helped, along with others,
to ensure that The Jubilee Pool would
remain for the enjoyment of many
generations to come.
Ursula’s daughter Wendy Hosken (nee
Pascoe) continues in her mother’s
footsteps and swims every day as her
mother did before her. Wendy is one of
our featured swimmers in this month’s
‘Wild Swimmers’ article.
This season The Penwith Exiles Football Team
welcomed Josh Findlay and James Squires
to the squad which proved to be very fruitful
come the end of May 2017.
The Exile’s first game of the season was a home
fixture against Goonhavern Athletic Reserves on 3rd
September 2016. The Exiles were off on the front
foot hammering Goonhavern 11-1 and certainly
taking no prisoners. It was a confidence booster and
a great start to their footballing campaign.
The team continued their winning streak over the
next few games defeating Frogpool, Wendron Utd,
Storm FC and Redruth United
Next was ‘The Lockhart Cup; A home tie against
close rivals Falmouth Town saw a 1-0 win for the
Exiles and began a run that would see them reach
the final of the cup where they faced arch rivals
Mabe FC.
The final was held on Sunday 7th May at Wendron
FC, a glorious sunny day with ideal conditions for
what promised to be a great football match.
The Exiles scored first and started to lift their play
only for Mabe to equalise.
Things then began to go against The Exiles, with
two players being sent off they found themselves 2-1
down. Amazingly they equalised (despite having
only nine men) levelling the score to 2-2.
The game went to extra time during which The Exiles
took the lead 3-2, only to be brought level at 3-3 with
Mabe scoring from the last kick of the game.
A nail-biting Penalty Shoot Out followed… with the
teams equal scoring five penalties each, a save from
the Exiles Goalkeeper meant it was down to Exile’s
Reece Millard and his turn on the penalty spot.
Reece calmly scored a great penalty in to the righthand
corner and secured the win.
The crowd went wild, and no wonder…The
majority of the match played with only nine men
against a very strong side. It was an outstanding
performance from nine men who wore their hearts
on their sleeves and played for each other until they
could run no further. A team of Superheroes with
an amazing attitude for football, each other and
their club.
With not much time to recover there was another
Sunday Final, May 14th against Mawnan FC. The
Exiles didn’t really get going until the final ten
minutes of the game and unfortunately lost 3-2.
The Penwith Exiles win and lose as a team and took
the defeat on the chin with grace. The team is made
up of three sets of brothers, relations, a Dad who is
one of the Managers…lads that grew up together.
Throughout the league The Exiles took every game
as it came, delivering every time and it definitely
paid off …Runners up in the ‘Percy Stevens
Cup’, winners of ‘The Lockhart Cup, amazing
achievements.
With three tricky fixtures remaining this season the
team require just a single point for the league title.
Every player in the squad has delivered over and
above themselves and Penwith couldn’t be prouder.
HARRIS BEGLEY
Enjoy Peace of Mind In Your Retirement
Tap Into The Value Of Your Home
And Release A Cash Sum with an
Equity Release Plan
Your retirement years should be a time to relax
and really enjoy life. A time when you are able to
devote more time to hobbies and interests, spend
time with family and friends, improve your home
and garden or even travel the world on a dream
holiday cruise.
Your Home Is Your Asset
Historically your retirement would have been
funded by your personal and state pension, plus
any other applicable state benefits, investments
or savings you may have accrued. However, the
economic climate over recent years has put a dent
in some of those expectations for many, creating
money worries when approaching retirement. A
well-chosen Equity Release scheme can alleviate
these worries and pave the way to a comfortable
retirement... So, if you’re a homeowner, aged
over 55 and looking for additional funds, then an
Equity Release plan may be your solution.
Our Equity Release Advisors are qualified experts
who can provide you with professional, impartial
advice in order to plan a brighter retirement,
specifically designed for you.
Releasing Cash From Your Home
There are a number of different Equity Release
options available which allow you to raise
funds based on the value of your home, as a
Lifetime Loan.
With some Equity Release plans you are not
required to pay off any capital or interest at
any point during your lifetime. Effectively, the
provider of the loan reclaims the capital (plus
any accumulated interest) through the eventual
sale of your property, once the final plan-holder
dies or moves into long-term care.
Qualified Retirement Planning Specialists
As qualified members of the Equity Release
Council, Harris Begley are retirement planning
specialists who can guide you through the
options available to you. There are a number
of areas that need to be considered to identify
if Equity Release is right for you and if at
any point we don’t feel that Equity Release is
suitable, we will advise against it and suggest
alternative solutions.
To book your FREE, no obligation initial
appointment, please contact Harris Begley
on Tel 01736 366550 or
email enquiries@harrisbegley.co.uk
Key Factors of Equity Release
• You must be aged 55 or over, have a property worth at least
£75,000 and be able to release a minimum of £15,000.
• You must use the cash sum released to pay off any existing
outstanding mortgage.
• You retain legal ownership of your home.
• You can safeguard a percentage of your home’s value with an
inheritance guarantee.
• You’re protected with a no negative equity guarantee, so you, or
your estate, will never pay back more than you receive from the
eventual sale of your home.
• There are no monthly repayments. Instead, interest is added
to the loan each year. The loan and interest are repaid in full,
usually from the sale of your home, when you die or go into
long-term care.
• Releasing equity can affect your tax position and eligibility for
welfare benefits.
• Equity Release isn’t suitable if you have savings you could use
instead, or would prefer to sell all, or part of your home, or
downsize.
• It will reduce the amount of inheritance you can leave.
Equity Release is a lifetime mortgage or home reversion scheme.
