THE JUBILEE POOL
A Definite Jewel in Cornwall’s Crown
PENWITH EXILES FC
The Pride of Penwith!
What’s new.
Penzance’s art deco lido re-opens for
the Summer season on the 27th May.
Local lady the late Ursula Pascoe (nee
Ingleheart) was present when the pool
first opened in 1935. This was the year
of King George the fifth’s Silver Jubilee.
The Jubilee hasn’t always had it easy,
with its closure in 1992 due to a
desperate need to revamp and a further
closure in 2014 due to the severe storm
damage it suffered.
Throughout the years, the support of
the locals and the ‘Friends Of Jubilee
Pool’ have ensured the pool’s bright
future.
Ursula Pascoe was an avid supporter,
campaigner and fundraiser of the cause.
Ursula grew up swimming along the
prom, Battery Rocks and in The Jubilee
Pool. Amazingly she swam every day
in all weathers until the grand age of
ninety-three!
Ursula’s children, grandchildren and
family continued tradition and grew up
swimming in the pool too. So, with the
Lido due to reopen for the season we
felt it fitting to remember a remarkable
lady who helped, along with others,
to ensure that The Jubilee Pool would
remain for the enjoyment of many
generations to come.
Ursula’s daughter Wendy Hosken (nee
Pascoe) continues in her mother’s
footsteps and swims every day as her
mother did before her. Wendy is one of
our featured swimmers in this month’s
‘Wild Swimmers’ article.
This season The Penwith Exiles Football Team
welcomed Josh Findlay and James Squires
to the squad which proved to be very fruitful
come the end of May 2017.
The Exile’s first game of the season was a home
fixture against Goonhavern Athletic Reserves on 3rd
September 2016. The Exiles were off on the front
foot hammering Goonhavern 11-1 and certainly
taking no prisoners. It was a confidence booster and
a great start to their footballing campaign.
The team continued their winning streak over the
next few games defeating Frogpool, Wendron Utd,
Storm FC and Redruth United
Next was ‘The Lockhart Cup; A home tie against
close rivals Falmouth Town saw a 1-0 win for the
Exiles and began a run that would see them reach
the final of the cup where they faced arch rivals
Mabe FC.
The final was held on Sunday 7th May at Wendron
FC, a glorious sunny day with ideal conditions for
what promised to be a great football match.
The Exiles scored first and started to lift their play
only for Mabe to equalise.
Things then began to go against The Exiles, with
two players being sent off they found themselves 2-1
down. Amazingly they equalised (despite having
only nine men) levelling the score to 2-2.
The game went to extra time during which The Exiles
took the lead 3-2, only to be brought level at 3-3 with
Mabe scoring from the last kick of the game.
A nail-biting Penalty Shoot Out followed… with the
teams equal scoring five penalties each, a save from
the Exiles Goalkeeper meant it was down to Exile’s
Reece Millard and his turn on the penalty spot.
Reece calmly scored a great penalty in to the righthand
corner and secured the win.
The crowd went wild, and no wonder…The
majority of the match played with only nine men
against a very strong side. It was an outstanding
performance from nine men who wore their hearts
on their sleeves and played for each other until they
could run no further. A team of Superheroes with
an amazing attitude for football, each other and
their club.
With not much time to recover there was another
Sunday Final, May 14th against Mawnan FC. The
Exiles didn’t really get going until the final ten
minutes of the game and unfortunately lost 3-2.
The Penwith Exiles win and lose as a team and took
the defeat on the chin with grace. The team is made
up of three sets of brothers, relations, a Dad who is
one of the Managers…lads that grew up together.
Throughout the league The Exiles took every game
as it came, delivering every time and it definitely
paid off …Runners up in the ‘Percy Stevens
Cup’, winners of ‘The Lockhart Cup, amazing
achievements.
With three tricky fixtures remaining this season the
team require just a single point for the league title.
Every player in the squad has delivered over and
above themselves and Penwith couldn’t be prouder.
