Quality Assurance
Concerned about quality? Our Aerospace approved stringent monitoring
systems ensure your products are of the highest quality at the most
competitive price.
Experience
We have been sourcing PCBs for over 22 years. Our team have over 200
years’ experience in the PCB industry.
HOW CAN WE HELP YOU SAVE MONEY ON YOUR PCBS WHEN MATERIAL
COSTS ARE RISING?
With Brexit, sterling to dollar conversions have pushed up the prices in
China by almost 20%, we are also seeing increases in the cost of laminate
and copper foil, all this has had further impact on the final price of the
printed circuit board.
At ALR Services we are consistently hunting for more cost effective quality
suppliers and other ways to reduce your costs. So how can we turn this
into a positive for you?
There are ways we can reduce the cost of a PCB dependent on the
manufacturer and location of the PCB supplier. So rather than price
increases we could actually be talking about price decreases.
Why Not Buy “British”
We all want to “Buy British”, the problem is that
printed circuit boards from the UK can be 2-10X
more expensive dependant on technology and
volume.
The higher the technology the greater the
difference.
The higher the volume the greater the
Example of Pricing
We are constantly monitoring the prices in the UK and China.
If you are purchasing pcbs in the UK, and if these are not Export
Prohibitive, then you could be saving 50% if you allowed us to manage
the procurement of these pcbs from China.
Now even if you are personally procuring these from china, this will
come at a cost to you, and it is possible you are not getting the most
75 Micron (0.003”) Track/Gap
In order to be able to reliably process boards 75um
as LDI ( Laser Direct Imaging)
This is typically the HDI (High Density Interconnect)
Sequential Build Multilayer
Sequential Lamination of PCB layers is required in order to connect outer
surface vias. This is due to the nature of the very small drill, and the aspect
ratio requirement on all drills (example 10:1) down to the inner layer. This
process is usually associated with via in-pad technology when routing finepitch,
densely-routed designs.
Please note this has a substantial increase on the price
of the PCB.
Peelable Soldermask
Peelable soldermask replaces any manual masking operations, that are
performed before the boards are assembled, however there are a lot of
technical and process requirements ( & limitations if this is going to be
used, such as cannot be used on SMD side.
Peelable Solder Masks (also known as strippable mask or blue-mask) are
applied by screen-printing, act as in-process protection and are removed
50 Micron Cores
We have selected and vetted pcb
manufacturers who are able to process fr4
cores as thin as 0.05mm, at this thickness
the cores are very fragile.
PCBs should a=only be designed with this
Via in PAD
Via in pad technology add cost to the pcb, where
this is sourced in the UK it is a considerable cost.
When we source this from our qualified partners
in China, the additional cost is a lot less.
We recommend in these situations that the via in
pad is copper filled which then reduces the
potential for micro voids in the BGA solder joint
Half Holes ( Castellation's)
The creation of Half Holes ( Castellation's) is actually quite a complex
process to get right, so there is no copper tails or that the holes are profiled
through the centre.
We have selected pcb manufacturers who
have proven that they have this capability.
This is a lot more difficult where this is on 4
sides, so again we ensure they have the
capability to do this.
We also carry our more detail inspection
Controlled Impedance
As circuit board signal switching speeds increase, PCB designers in this day and
age need to understand and control the impedance of printed circuit board
traces. Short signal transition times and high clock rates of modern digital
circuitry require PCB traces to be considered not as simple connections, but as
transmission lines.
We have selected suppliers who manufacture and test impedance pcbs every
day, so they are very familiar with this requirement, and the technological
requirements this needs.
heavy copper PCB features a finished copper weight of more than 4oz (140μm),
compared to the 1oz (35μm) or 2oz (0μm) copper weight generally found in
those with a standard PCB copper thickness, you can even get 20oz copper, but
limitations apply.
The additional copper PCB thickness enables the board to conduct a higher
current, achieve good thermal distribution and implement complex switches in
a limited space. Other advantages include increased mechanical strength at
connector sites, the ability to create a smaller product size by incorporating
multiple weights on the same layer of circuitry and the ability to use exotic
materials to their maximum capacity with minimal risk of circuit failure.
Board Finishes
A surface finish can be defined as a coating, either metallic or organic in nature,
which is applied to a Printed Circuit Copper pad, in order to assure solderability
of that pad. Simply put, it is a solderability preservative; the outermost layer of
which dissolves into the solder paste upon reflow or wave soldering.
ENIG (Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold (Ni-Au))
ENIG is a two layer metallic coating of 0.05um- 0.10uM of Gold over 3uM to
8UM of electroless nickel. The Nickel is the barrier to the copper and is the
surface to which the components are actually soldered to. The gold protects the
nickel during storage and also provides the low contact resistance required for
the thin gold deposits. ENIG is now arguably the most used finish in the PCB
industry due the growth and implementation of the RoHs regulation.
ADVANTAGES
Gold Wire-Bondable
Planar Surface
Consistent Thicknesses
Multiple Thermal Cycles
Long Shelf Life
HASL (Hot Air Solder Level ( Leaded or Lead free (LF))
HASL was the predominant surface finish used in the industry. The process consists of
immersing circuit boards in a molten pot of a tin/lead alloy and then removing the excess
solder by using ‘air knives’, which blow hot air across the surface of the board.
This is the standard default for practically all manufacturers and is NOT an additional cost.
Advantages
•“Nothing Solders Like Solder”
•Easily Applied
•Lengthy Industry Experience
•Easily Reworked
•Multiple Thermal Excursions
•Good Bond Strength
OSP (Organic Solderability Preservative)
OSP (Organic Solderability Preservative) or anti-tarnish preserves the copper
surface from oxidation by applying a very thin protective layer of material over
the exposed copper usually using a conveyorized process.
It uses a water-based organic compound that selectively bonds to copper and
provides an organometallic layer that protects the copper prior to soldering. It’s
also extremely green environmentally in comparison with the other common
lead-free finishes, which suffer from either being more toxic or substantially
higher energy consumption.
Manufacturing Leadtime – (Delivered)
When it comes to lead-times, sourcing in China is a lot more difficult when
requiring less than 5 day deliveries…
So for 5 days or Less : we source in the UK, however please note this is a lot
more expensive
For 6 Days or more : we source in China, this is for all types and all quantities..
Premiums are charged but both the starting point and premiums are a lot
lower. Typically 50% lower for a delay of say 1-2 days.
To keep your cost to a minimum we suggest looking at using our China prices
rather than the UK prices, as these will give you substantial savings.
China is typically
50% of the price of
the UK or even
more.. So a few
days in leadtime,
can make a big
difference in Price
as we can source
from China
UK =
Lower Tech Factories
With approx. 80% of the pcbs made in the
Far East, all factories are now consistently
producing quality pcbs with a very
reliable delivery performance.
The main driver for the lower tech
companies is cost, so we source the most
competitive prices and lead-times.
We match the lower tech requirements of
these pcbs with the relevant pcb
manufacturer, ensuring the best value.
A lower tech factoring in China is
regarded as a medium tech factory in
Europe.
These factories typically employ hundreds
if not thousands of employees producing
massive volumes of pcbs and part
