City of Riverside Solid Waste Programs
Going Green In The City Of Riverside Is As Easy As 3-1-1!
The City of Riverside offers their residents
several options to recycle their waste.
The first is to utilize the automated
curbside collection recycling blue
barrel for the following material
types: glass (food and beverage
containers), plastics numbered 1-7,
paper products and metals. Please
ensure that materials are free of
residual foodwaste and liquid.
Secondly, contact 3-1-1 for all
other recycling and scheduling needs.
Larger materials that cannot fit into
the blue recycling barrel, such as
appliances, can be collected by contacting the
City. If a resident has materials like used motor
oil and used oil filters they can arrange for
curbside collection. All other bulky items can be
collected through the two free curbside bulky
Recycling
item collections provided to residents. These
items include sofas, chairs, and mattresses.
Other options for bulky items and e-waste
collection can be accommodated at one of the
four C.U.R.E. events (Clean Up Riverside’s Environment)
held during the year and throughout
the city. Information on these dates and other
services can be obtained
Used motor oil should NEVER be
poured onto the ground, into storm
drains or tossed into trash cans (even in
a sealed container) because it contains
toxins which contaminate the soil,
groundwater, streams and rivers.
Two easy ways to Safely dispose of used oil and filters:
1. FREE curbside pick up is
available to city residents for
used oil. Call 1-800-698-4377
to schedule an appointment.
2. Drop off used oil at a
SLIDERS There are plenty of twists, turns and straightaways
at Alpine Slide in Big Bear.
affordable way to play anyway
with all-day passes just $15, 10
rides for $10, or single rides for
$2. Parents who don’t play never
have to pay, many choosing
to sit on one of two spacious
sundecks with a good book
while the kids have a blast. Or,
head to the recently expanded
indoor base lodge to escape the
sun where there’s video games
and family-priced snack bar that
includes an old-fashioned Breyers
ice cream counter.
Alpine Slide is famous for its
Olympic-style bobsleds which
are in season all year long. Snow
is never needed since the sleds
have teflon runners and ballbearing
wheels, and the quartermile
long tracks with banked
turns and long straightaways are
cement.
Riders control their own
speed with the brake, and unlike
any amusement park ride, each
Alpine Slide
trip down is a completely unique
and interactive experience. Lean
into each turn and go into a tuck
through straightaways to experience
what it’s like to be an Olympic
bobsledder, or use the brake
to go slow and soak in views of
the lake and mountains.
For a relaxing change of pace
enjoy a round on the Putt ‘N
Around miniature golf course,
laden with rolling greens, water
hazards, even penalty-stroke
“sand traps.”
Then for more fast fun, ride
the Putt ‘N Around Go-Karts,
each equipped with 5.5 horsepower
Honda motors and an
array of safety features including
three-point harness restraints,
hydraulic disk brakes, rack and
pinion steering and padded steering
wheels. The tire-lined track
sports hair pin and high banked
turns as riders circle under the
pines at 7,000 foot elevation. IER
Alpine Slide is on Big Bear Blvd. in Big Bear, 1/4 mile west
of the Village shopping area, home to 60 specialty stores.
June/July, 2017 Inland Entertainment Review
Don’t Miss These Two Big Shows!
The Riverside Home & Garden and The Ontario Home & Backyard Shows bring the latest ideas in home and backyard living
The inland empire is growing, and so are
two great home and garden events. First,
there’s the Riverside Home & Garden
Show on June 9 th , 10 th , and 11 th , at the Riverside
Convention Center, showcasing the latest ideas
in home improvement and gardening. It has
been a yearly Riverside tradition since 1993.
Next, it’s the Ontario Home & Backyard
Show, July 7 th , 8 th , and 9 th , at the Ontario Convention
Center, and spotlights why “summer
means fun in the Inland Empire.” This show
features the best in home and backyard living,
plus a free Polynesian entertainment show Saturday,
July 8 th at 2pm.
Make your plans now to attend both shows
and see hundreds of exhibits from the experts in
home and garden to the professionals in backyard
living, bbq’s, pools, spas, and patios, and
much more. Here’s the best part: the admission
for both shows is free, sponsored by the Press
Enterprise and the Daily Bulletin.
Hours for both shows are Friday 12 to 7pm,
Saturday 10am to 7pm, and Sunday 10am to
5pm, with free gardening, solar, and cooking
seminars, plus grand prize drawings, early bird
gifts and entertainment all three days. These two
shows are the best entertainment deal in the inland
empire, so save the dates and join the fun!
A Day Out With Thomas The
Tank Engine And Friends
Beloved children’s choo-choo train
Thomas and his railway friend Percy
are chugging into the Orange Empire
Railway Museum to greet fans of all ages,
November 4, 5, 10 11 and 12.
A Day Out With Thomas offers aspiring
engineers and their families the opportunity
to take a 25-minute ride with the
famous engine and smaller locomotive Percy.
Children can also meet Sir Topham Hatt,
the Superintendent of the Railroad from the
Island of Sodor.
Enjoy a wide range of activities perfect
for children. Stop by the Thomas & Friends
Imagination Station with train tables and
building activities. There will be Thomasthemed
stamps, temporary tattoos, storytelling
and videos. There will also be games, coloring,
live children’s music, a petting zoo, bounce
house, sing-alongs, and a Thomas gift store.
There will be street car and trolley rides
and an entire museum to explore. A visit to
the Orange Empire Railway Museum is a
trip back in time to when trains, conductors,
whistles, bells, and steam were a part of the
way we traveled.
A Day Out With Thomas will keep adults
who love trains, and children who love
Thomas, happily chugging along the tracks.
Families should arrive no later than one hour
prior to scheduled departure. Tickets start at
$19 for ages two and older.
The Orange Empire Railway Museum is
a volunteer-run organization that has been
preserving Southern California’s railway history
since 1956. The Museum’s mission is to
educate the public on the technology, history,
and impact of the rail transportation industry
in the West. Over 200 rail cars and locomotives,
ranging from Los Angeles street cars to
modern diesel locomotives, are preserved at
the museum’s 90-acre site in Perris, which is
open 363 days of the year.
For ticket purchases and information, call the Orange
Empire Railway Museum office at (951) 943-3020 or
Big Bear Speedway
Open for Real Racing
Fun Fast times move from snow- covered
slopes to the race track as Big Bear Snow
Play high in the San Bernardino Mountains
opens its popular Speedway track.
Big Bear Speedway offers a real- life racing
experience as drivers negotiate fully featured
Sodi RT8 Karts around a fifth- of- a- mile long
course filled with hairpin turns and S- curves
galore.
Drivers reach speeds upwards of 30 mph
as they compete against the clock on a Grand
Prix- style course where the same Tecpro
barriers used in Formula 1 and circuits
around the world line the track. Sodi’s RT8
Kart is really a mini- race car with features
straight from the automotive industry, like
self- adjusting hydraulic brakes and vacuum
fuel pumps.
The leader in the kart racing craze sweeping
the country, Sodi Karts offer speed and
safety with Four Point seat belts. It’s an authentic
experience that allows everyone to get
a taste of Formula 1 racing! The karts handle
like race cars with pinpoint steering and the
Honda Whisper Motors generate amazing
power, enough for cars to lay rubber on the
paved track through the many turns.
Sodi RT8 Karts sport design elegance and
fully adjustable patented pedals to serve up
the ultimate Go Pro- worthy race experience.
Big Bear Speedway has 17 single karts
and six doubles that have two steering
wheels and two brake pedals for training or
parent riding with a child. Up to 11 cars
are allowed on the track at one time as racers
compete against the clock.
Safety is always the primary focus with
racers required to wear professional grade
helmets. The racing experience begins in the
base lodge where first time guests view a twoand-
a- half minute safety video. Then they’re
issued Big Bear Speedway licenses good for
one year and assigned a heat number.
Pit crew wave karts onto the track in staggered
starts. First lap is not timed so drivers
can get a feel for the car and track. Drivers
get two to two- and- a- half miles of racing per
heat depending on how fast they go. After
their heat drivers can get a printout of their
time and the six fastest times in the heat. IER
Get On The
Speedway
RATES
Initial Big Bear Speedway membership
is $20 (double kart $25) which includes
license valid for one year, one race and
mandatory head sock worn under the
helmet. Subsequent visits cost $15 per
race or buy credits in advance, which
are stored on your license for a year
and save up to 30%.
Pageant Of The Masters Ready To
Embark On ‘The Grand Tour’
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the desire to
experience the world’s great art firsthand inspired
the European tradition of continental
travel on the Grand Tour. Inspired to set out on
pilgrimages by land and sea to the great cultural
centers of Europe, and eventually the globe,
those early travelers often risked life and limb to
stand in the presence of masterpieces. It’s that
original dedication to expanding one’s horizons
by visiting the great art centers of Europe that
fueled Pageant Director Diane Challis Davy’s excitement
and research as she fine-tunes plans for
this summer’s production, The Grand Tour.
“Perhaps because I do so much virtual
traveling via Google,” Challis Davy offered, “I
have a fantasy about actual travel and sightseeing.
I was curious about the tremendous
difficulties travelers encountered in the 18th
century, with horse-drawn coaches on unpaved
roads and no railways, no hotels. Even restaurants
hardly existed, and there were virtually no
public museums.”
On the traditional Grand Tour, art became a
destination for privileged travelers in much the
way the Pageant during its 84-year history has
become a destination for theatregoers who want
to experience art in a one-of-a-kind entertainment.
“Much of the show will unfold like a
journey,” Challis Davy said.
There’ll be no shortage of masterpieces in the
2017 Pageant, including works by Leonardo da
Vinci, Tiepolo, Longhi, Watteau, Reynolds, and
Romney. But, as in previous years, the production’s
theme will expand to include American
artists like John Singer Sargent whose work was
transformed by his travels.
20
June/July, 2017 Inland Entertainment Review
Theater & Arts
With the coming of the 20 th century, new
modes of transportation made it possible for
almost everyone to go on their own “tourists’
grand tour,” and the theatrical possibilities
assure no shortage of Pageant-style fun and
inventive showmanship. A side trip to Pompeii,
a celebration of Carnival in Venice and the
European tour of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show
offer abundant opportunities for surprises and
special effects. A tribute to Paris in the early 20 th
century when audiences in clubs embraced the
talents of Josephine Baker, Louis Armstrong,
and Duke Ellington reveals how a change of
scene can launch an artist’s career.
Among the great stories associated with the
original Grand Tours, Challis Davy has her
own favorites including the romantic saga of
Lord Hamilton, Emma Hart, and Lord Nelson,
whose exploits helped make Naples a must-see
destination during the late 18 th century.
Pageant Scriptwriter Dan Duling explained,
“I hope we can recreate some of that sense of
awe shared by those early travelers when they
visited the grand palaces, ancient ruins and art
centers of Europe. The original Grand Tours
were educational pilgrimages, to Paris, Rome,
and beyond. Those who made the journeys
couldn’t help but be changed by what they saw,
what they brought back, and what they experienced
so far from home.”
As always, Challis Davy and her staff realize
the Pageant wouldn’t be possible without their
volunteers who make it their summer destination,
traveling from all over the Southland and
returning year after year to take part. Challis
Davy offered one final thought, “The Grand Tour
is about travel for pleasure. And what greater
pleasure can there be than to find oneself in the
presence of great art at the end of the journey?”
ABOUT THE PAGEANT OF THE MASTERS
PRESENTED BY THE FESTIVAL OF ARTS OF LAGUNA BEACH
The Pageant of the Masters is arguably one of
the most unique productions in the entire world.
Audiences are amazed and enchanted by ninety
minutes of tableaux vivants (“living pictures”),
incredibly faithful re-creations of classical and
contemporary works of art, with real people posing
to look exactly like their counterparts in the
original pieces. A live narrator serves as a guide
through the story of each living picture accompanied
by the music of a professional orchestra.
Def Leppard With Poison
And Tesla Coming To
Citizens Business Bank Arena
Fresh off winning the fan voted
Classic Rock Magazine Album
of the Year award, Def Leppard
announced they will return to the
road. Southern California fans will
flock to Citizens Business Bank
Arena on June 14 for the show
which includes Poison and Tesla.
Def Leppard front man Joe Elliott
says, “We’re thrilled to be able
to take this tour to cities we didn’t
play in 2016. The demand for us
to return, or rather extend the tour,
was phenomenal! There’s a great
buzz around the band right now and
we’re loving the fact that we can do
this with the latest album being so
well received.”
With two prestigious Diamond
Awards to their credit, Def
Leppard—Joe Elliott, Phil Collen,
Vivian Campbell, Rick “Sav” Savage,
and Rick Allen—continues to
stand tall in the music industry and
A man with a boring life meets a woman with an intriguing accent who says she
is a spy. He agrees to take her to his home, where she is then murdered. Soon a
mysterious organization called “The 39 Steps” is hot on the man’s trail in a nationwide
manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale. A fast-paced whodunit for anyone
who loves the magic of theatre, zany characters and even some romance.
This Broadway version of You’re A Good
Man, Charlie Brown won two Tony Awards
and a Drama Desk Award for the 1998-1999
season. It features all of the classic musical
numbers including “My New Philosophy”
(which made Kristin Chenowith a star) and
also wonderful Charlie Brown songs from
“Beethoven Day” to “The Book Report” and
“Happiness”. Featuring favorite Charles M.
Schulz characters from the famous Peanuts
cartoon strips, CATS will present the musical
with older teen and adult performers as was
originally written. The show features many
CATS veteran performers: Adam McDonald
plays Charlie Brown, Carolyn Freeman Champ
is Lucy, Serena Saunders is Sally, Amber Parle
is Snoopy, Timmy Brasher is Linus, and Troy
Obernolte is Schroeder.
The musical depicts an average day in the
life of Charlie Brown, made up of memorable
cartoon moments ranging from Charlie Brown’s
wild optimism to utter despair. From the frustration
of the baseball game, to the insecurity
of Valentine’s day, to problems writing a book
report, it is all depicted on stage by his human
and non-human friends. The classic score opens
with Charlie Brown’s uncertain but optimistic
morning (“You’re A Good Man, Charlie
Brown”), and happily ending in a hopeful starlit
evening (“Happiness”).
Show stoppers include Snoopy singing “Suppertime”
and Lucy’s songs (“Schroeder” and
“The Doctor Is In”).
The whole Peanuts Gang is also featured in
“The Book Report”, “The Baseball Game” and
“Beethoven Day”.
DEATHTRAP: Through June 4.
Sydney Bruhl, a once successful
Broadway thriller writer, is on the
skids. When he receives a perfect
example of a thriller play from
Clifford Anderson, an inexperienced
writer who attended one of Sydney’s
seminars, his envy is overwhelming.
Obsessed with a sinister idea, he
invites Clifford to his home with
an offer to provide suggestions on
improving the play ... and the many
unexpected turns and twists of
events begin.
THE 39 STEPS: July 7-23. A man
with a boring life meets a woman with
an intriguing accent who says she is
a spy. He agrees to take her to his
home, where she is then murdered.
Soon a mysterious organization called
“The 39 Steps” is hot on the man’s
trail in a nationwide manhunt that
climaxes in a death-defying finale.
A fast-paced whodunit for anyone
who loves the magic of theatre, zany
characters and even some romance.
