CELEBRATE 60 YEARS OF FUN AT THE
GARDEN GROVE STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL
The 60th Annual Garden Grove Strawberry
Festival is a non-profit organization
dedicated to raising funds for the community
- over $6.5 million since its inception
in 1958. This year, fourteen non-profits
received a combined total of over $150,000.
The Festival also benefits many non-profit
groups whose food and game booths collectively
raise over $100,000 more. The board
awards scholarships to local school students,
underwrites parade participation for school
bands, and treats over 2,000 special needs kids
to a day of free rides and food.
Appropriately, this year’s theme is “Celebrating
60 Years of Fun and Funding Charities.”
The festival - the second largest city
festival in the Western United States - will
be held Memorial Day Weekend Friday, May
25 through Monday, May 28, at the Village
Green between Main Street and Euclid Avenue
in downtown Garden Grove. Last year’s attendance
was over 300,000.
Highlights of the Festival include the
Friday evening official giant strawberry cake
cutting ceremony at 6pm at the Showmobile
(Acacia and Main streets) when free cake is
served to over 2,000 people.
Saturday morning begins with a 5K
Strawberry Run followed by an 8:30am VIP
celebrity breakfast at the Garden Grove Community
Center.
Next is a parade at 10am with film and
TV celebrities, floats, bands, equestrians, and
characters.
All four festival days include 35 carnival
rides, five contests, over 200 food and sales
booths, games, music, and live entertainment
in the amphitheater and Showmobile. Contests
include the Berry, Berry Beautiful Baby
Contest, Redhead Roundup, Strawberry Idol
Karaoke, and Tiny Tots King and Queen.
Third Annual ‘Doors Open
Riverside’ Returns May 10th
ENJOY TOURS OF HISTORIC PRIVATE AND PUBLIC BUILDINGS IN DOWNTOWN RIVERSIDE
Doors Open is an event that provides
an opportunity to discover hidden
architectural gems in buildings that are
not usually open to the public. The first Doors
Open Day took place in France in 1984 and
the concept has spread to other places in Europe,
North America, Australia, and elsewhere
including the United States.
The third Annual Doors Open Riverside
takes place on Thursday, May 10th from 6pm
to 9pm, and from 5pm to 8pm for certain
locations that need more daylight. The only
event of its type in California and, in fact,
west of Colorado, this free event provides
docent-led tours of historic buildings that
seldom have their “doors open”.
Locations include not only private buildings,
but churches, museums, and Riverside’s
historic downtown cemetery. The last two
events attracted over 1,000 people each.
Just a few of the museums and churches
that will have their “Doors Open” for the 2018
event are the Mission Inn Museum, the Riverside
Art Museum, the Universalist Unitarian
Church, and Eden Lutheran Church. New locations
on the tour include Thee Olde Chapel,
the former church on 14th that has been lovingly
restored as a wedding chapel, White Park,
and the Santa Fe Depot.
The full list of participating buildings will be
available at www.DoorsOpenRiverside.com.
The event is a partnership between the City of
Riverside, the Mission Inn Foundation, the Riverside
Arts Council, the Old Riverside Foundation,
and the Riverside Downtown Partnership.
Docents from the Mission Inn Museum will
provide information on the history and special
features of these buildings during the tours. Tours
are approximately every 20 minutes with groups
of no more than 20 in most cases, allowing time
for questions. Tour maps will be available at the
information tables located in front of the Main
Library on Mission Inn Avenue, and next to the
Mission Inn Museum on Main. IER
TV CELEBRITY CHEFS GO HEAD TO HEAD AT
NORCO BBQ COOK-OFF
Michael Character and
Phillip Dell face-off at
Horse Town Brew n’ Que
Norco, California sets the stage for the
ultimate showdown as celebrity chefs
Michael Character and Phillip Dell faceoff,
head to head, in front of 60 professional
barbeque teams at the 4rd Annual Horse Town
Brew n’ Que Festival, June 2.
Teams throughout California, Arizona,
Nevada, and Texas vie for $10,000 in cash,
prizes, and most importantly, bragging rights.
The festival, sanctioned by the Kansas City
Barbecue Society (KCBS) and the California
Barbeque Association (CBBQA), hosts one of
the largest gatherings of professional barbeque
teams on the West coast. It is highlighted by
live entertainment, a certified barbeque judge’s
class, and beer sampling from award winning
craft brewers.
Phillip Dell
PHILLIP DELL
Phillip Dell is an award winning chef whose
cooking skills range from sauces to soufflés.
He has been seen on the Food Network series
Cutthroat Kitchen and Chopped, winning the
Championship on the latter.
In 2017, his champion barbeque team,
Swine Thyme, qualified for the American
Royal and the Jack Daniels Invitational. Dell is
the proprietor of four entrepreneurial ventures:
On The Sweet Side, Inc., a dessert and pastry
business; Wizard’s Gourmet, a barbecue catering
service and vendor of specialty seasonings;
Sin City Chefs Inc., a private chef and onsite
catering service specializing in recipe transformation
and healthy eating; and CPD Enterprises,
LLC, specializing in culinary consulting.
Dell has been part of the opening team of
five restaurants including the Wynn Las Vegas
Casino in Las Vegas and has created meals for
celebrities such as Tony Curtis, Ernest Borgnine,
Dallas Holms, and others.
Winner of the 2016 National Educator of
Excellence by the National Restaurant Association
Educational Foundation and a natural
body builder, Dell is a dedicated member of
the barbeque community.
Dell says, “I am really looking forward to
coming to California to show Michael what
I’ve got. “I am ready to put Michael’s Character
... on hold.”
MICHAEL CHARACTER
Michael Character was born in Seattle,
Washington and moved with his family to
Georgia when he was seven years old. Like
many BBQ competitors, Character learned the
art of BBQ as a child, watching family members
cook in his backyard.
He is the owner of Character’s Famous
BBQ in Adairsville, Georgia.
Character is a seasoned BBQ competitor
whose been featured on television, in print
media, and in books to include America’s Best
BBQ by Ardie A. Davis and Chef Paul Kirk.
He was a pivotal figure on Season 1 of BBQ Pit
Wars and often created the most down home
dialogue on television’s BBQ Pitmasters.
A crowd favorite, he is known for his
outrageous smack talk and his infectious
personality. While Michael did not take top
honors on BBQ Pit Wars or BBQ Pitmasters,
he maintained the shows needed balance.
Character maintains a confidence and determination
that is ready to take on any situation.
He is not afraid of any challenge and
Michael Character
Myron Mixon’s “Evil Empire.”
Character sees the Horse Town Brew
patrons taste his barbeque. Character
said, “I am going to crush the Dell out
of Phil.”
Beside the barbeque competition,
patrons may purchase samples of beer
21st Annual
Memorial Day Air
Fair and Flower Drop
Ceremony at Palm Springs Air Museum
One of the most unusual and touching
Memorial Day events takes place in
Riverside County, at the Palm Springs
Air Museum, just minutes off the 10 Freeway
at Gene Autry Trail in Palm Springs. The
86,000 square foot museum houses over 59
vintage flying and static aircraft displays,
spread over four hangars. Each hangar is
themed, and contains aircraft and accompanying
exhibits covering the Pacific and European
Theatres of Operation during World
War II, the B-17 Hangar, and the one year
old Gen. Miles Korea and Vietnam hangar.
Every Memorial Day, thousands of
residents and visitors gather at the Palm
Springs Air Museum for the annual
Memorial Day Flower Drop and Air Fair. This
year’s 1pm ceremony honors 102-year-old B-17
gunner Mike Kovich. After the brief ceremony,
a B-25 Mitchell Bomber loaded with 3,000 red
and white carnations will be pulled out of the
European hangar, onto the tarmac behind the
Museum, engines turned over, and visitors watch
as the plane departs the tarmac and taxis to the
Palm Springs International Airport for take-off.
MEMORIAL DAY AIR FAIR AND FLOWER DROP: Planes
make a “missing man” formation before the B-25 drops carnations.
The B-25 is followed by three other
airplanes, which will make the Missing Man
formation. After two passes over the Museum,
one of the planes leaves the formation, hence the
name “missing man”. This will be followed by
the dropping of the carnations over the tarmac.
Visitors are encouraged to take home a
carnation as a souvenir. The carnations are in
honor of all the men and women who gave up
their lives to preserve our liberties and way of
life. The white carnations are in honor of
those who died in World War I and II, Korea,
and Vietnam. The red carnations are
in honor of those who died during more
recent conflicts including the Persian Gulf,
Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. This
year’s Memorial Day Ceremony includes
flight exhibitions and rides for sale on
the B-17 Sentimental Journey. The other
aircraft scheduled to fly are the C-47, P-51
Mustang, P-63 King Cobra, and the T-28
The Museum charges admission, and
Memorial Day will be full of special flight
exhibitions throughout the day, live music,
food vendors, and children’s activities.
Flight exhibitions start when the doors
open at 10am.
Face painting, balloon formations, and Harpo
the Clown will be on hand. The In ‘n Out
Burger Trailer will be on the tarmac selling food,
as well as other food vendors, and the Freedom
Fighters’ Café inside the B-17 Hangar.
PARADE ROUTE
The parade route will begin exactly the same as past years, riding
down Indiana Avenue northeast towards Arlington Avenue, turning right
and going to Alessandro Blvd., turning right, then turning right once
again onto Trautwein Road. The parade will then turn left onto Van
Buren Blvd. heading east towards the Riverside National Cemetery, who
is the benefactor of this amazing event.
Those riders who want to pay their respects at the Cemetery may enter
by turning right on Village West before they reach the main entrance
and entering the cemetery from that side street. Motorcycles are asked to
please not use the main entrance of the cemetery due to the large volume
of visitors attending the City of Riverside’s Memorial Day Ceremony and
people visiting the grave sites of their loved ones.
At this point, the parade route changes from past years. The motorcycle
parade will ride past the main entrance of the Cemetery and merge
onto 215 South. They will continue going on South 215 until they reach
Exit 22 and they will turn left onto the Ramona Expressway heading
towards the Perris Fairgrounds, turning left once again, onto Lake Perris
Drive. The new venue, Southern California Fair & Event Center, is
located at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in Perris.
NEW PARADE ROUTE FOR WEST COAST THUNDER
PERRIS FAIRGROUNDS
Perris Fairgrounds will be a much larger venue and there will be more
things going on that day and all weekend to entice families and friends,
as well as motorcycle enthusiasts. There will be a family-friendly carnival
going on all weekend, a vintage car show, more vendors, and motorcycle
stunt performers in addition to the closing tribute concert on Memorial
Day Monday, May 28th.
The main stage will be set right in the center of Perris Auto Speedway
for Country music artists Granger Smith, aka Earl Dibbles, Jr., who will
be the headliner and Tyler Rich will open the show beginning around
noon.
West Coast Thunder’s Color Guard will be performing their emotional
Ultimate Sacrifice Ceremony between shows.
And that’s not all ….. there will be a host of options for all discerning
tastes in food and beverage concessions. On the Midway Stage, just to the
right of the concessions and vendors, there will be more bands playing
including WCT Singer Michael Austin, and two local favorite classic rock
cover bands, Retroblast, and Southbound and Company.
Bring your family and make this a holiday to remember and a tradition
in years to come.
Theater & The Arts
Frederick The Poet
Mouse Comes To Rancho
Cucamonga In May!
MainStreet Theatre Company Produces West Coast Premiere Opening on May 5.
What does it mean to be part of a community? What does
it take to make it through the darkest days? These are
some of the questions that will be answered with joyful
exhuberance when the beloved 1968 Caldecott Honor Book comes
to life on stage! Frederick, based on Leo Lionni’s book about a poet
mouse who stores up something special for the long winter, opens
at Lewis Family Playhouse on May 5th and runs through May
20th.
With book by Suzanne Maynard Miller, and music and lyrics
by Sarah Durkee and Paul Jacobs, MainStreet Theatre Company is
proud to produce the musical’s West Coast Premiere. The production
is directed by Robert Castro, with musical direction by Janice
Rodgers Wainwright, and choreography by Tom Tsai.
This simple but poignant story about a community of mice
getting ready for winter combines fabulous blue-grass music with a
great message about the importance of the arts to a society’s survival.
All the mice are busy storing food to get them through the long
winter, and are frustrated with Frederick, who tries hard to explain
to his more literal-minded friends that they’ll need the items that
he’s collecting, not just the nuts and berries the rest of them are
busily gathering. Throughout the course of the story, the mice, and
the audience, learn that everyone’s contribution is important, and
when the mice are running out of food, it’s Frederick’s collection of
sights, smells, and colors that get them through the darkest days.
MainStreet’s production includes Ricky Abilez as Frederick,
with Kevin Trinio Perdido, Brandon Ruiter, Marnina Schon, and
Rachel Sorsa as the rest of the mouse commune. In addition to the
cast, there’ll be a 4-piece live band playing the infectious bluegrass
score, led by MainStreet regular “mice-tra,” Janice Rodgers
Wainwright.
Director Robert Castro, whose productions of theatre and opera
have been seen across the U.S and Internationally, is known for his
use of stunning visual images and imaginative theatrical storytelling.
His previous work for MainStreet includes the Ovation nominated
A Wrinkle in Time, as well as Aesop in Rancho Cucamonga,
Aladdin’s Luck, Treasure Island, Ferdinand the Bull, and Dreams of
Anne Frank.
Choreographer Tom Tsai is a dance and video artist with a
unique voice, which marries different modern forms. The team
is excited to marry the very American Southern Blue-Grass type
music with a modern, almost hip-hop movement style, which they
hope the kids in the audience will recognize and relate to.
The deceptively simple design takes Lionni’s book as inspiration,
and embraces not only his use of white space, but also the way
the objects are made of pieces of torn paper collage. The creative
team, many of whom are frequent collaborators at MainStreet,
includes Victoria Petrovich (Scenic Design), Raquel Barreto
(Costume Design), Brian Gale (Lighting Design), John Zalewski
(Sound Design), and Akeime Mitterlehner (Prop Design). Mary K.
Klinger is Production Stage Manager.
Frederick runs May 5 – 20, with performances on Saturdays
at 1pm and 4pm (no 1pm performance May 5th) and Sundays at
1pm (no performance May 6th). Tickets are priced at $18 for Gen-
beaten and half dead. He finds his purpose in this broken land but is it enough to save
Beat The
Summer Heat
Beat The Heat For Cheap With
Water Slide Season Passes
Escape the sweltering heat in
the cities this summer with a
day of play in the cool spray
on the double water slide at Alpine
Slide in nearby Big Bear Lake.
Enjoy cooler temperatures in
the mountains while splishing and
splashing on Alpine Slide’s two
flumes of cascading water, which
take riders down long straight
aways and through numerous
turns before depositing them in
2 -
Registration will not be accepted the night of auditions.
the solar-heated pool at the bottom.
Water Slide rides are inexpensive
- just $15 for an all day pass,
10 rides for $10, or two bucks
each. Season passes are $69 for
an anytime pass, and $49 for a
Sunday-Friday pass (excluding
July 4th). A great way to beat
summer heat, and parents who
don’t want to play don’t get soaked
either since they don’t have to pay
to get in, unlike at other water
Bobby Bonds / César Chávez Community Center • 2060 University Ave. • 951.826.2221
SLIDERS There are plenty of twists, turns, and straightaways
at Alpine Slide in Big Bear.
parks. Spread a blanket out on the
grass or take a seat on one of two
outdoor sundecks and soak up rays
while the kids play.
Alpine Slide is famous for its
Olympic-style bobsleds which are
in season all year long. Snow is
never needed since the sleds have
Teflon runners and ball-bearing
wheels, and the two quarter-mile
long tracks with banked turns are
cement.
Riders control their own
speed with the brake, and unlike
any amusement park ride, each
trip down is a completely unique
and interactive experience. Lean
into each turn and go into a
tuck through straightaways to
experience what it’s like to be an
Olympic bobsledder, or use the
brake to go slow and soak in views
of the lake and mountains.
Alpine Slide is also home
to Putt ‘N Around go-karts and
18-hole miniature golf course,
Alpine Slide
filled with water hazards, breaking
greens and “sand traps.” Go-karts
feature 5.5 horsepower Honda
motors and safety features like
professional three-point restraint
systems similar to those found in
race cars, rack and pinion steering,
hydraulic disk brakes, and padded
steering wheels.
Take a break from the action
in the expanded lodge with family
priced snacks including handscooped
ice cream bar. A cotton
candy machine makes your cotton
candy while you watch!
Alpine Slide is open weekends
in the Spring with daily summer
operation beginning June 9th and
is located at 800 Wildrose Lane
in Big Bear Lake, 1/4 mile west of
the Village shopping, home to 60
specialty stores.
SOME CHILI!
ARLINGTON BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP’S ANNUAL CHILI
COOK-OFF & CAR/CYCLE SHOW IS COMING MEMORIAL DAY
WEEKEND IN RIVERSIDE’S ARLINGTON BUSINESS DISTRICT
Arlington Business Partnership’s
Annual Chili
Cook-Off & Car/Cycle
Show returns for its 16th
year on Saturday, May 26,
and will offer Inland Empire
residents a free, family friendly event with
tons of activities for children and adults.
The annual event spans Magnolia Avenue
between Van Buren Boulevard and Jackson
Street, and will include two stages of live
music, classic cars, street vendors, a Kid’s
Zone with petting zoo, a beer garden and, of
course, chili.
Over the years, word of mouth has
helped the event grow into a popular attraction.
In 2017, The Press Enterprise’s annual
Best of the Inland Empire named the Chili
Cook-Off as a Hometown Favorite – Best
Community Event.
“In 2003, the founding members of the
Arlington Business Partnership started the
chili cook-off with about 1,500 people in
attendance and last year there was estimated
to be 20,000 on the street,” said Arlington
Business Partnership Executive Director
Andrew Guerra.
The chili cook-off will consist of two
competitions. The first chili cook-off
competition is expected to have professional
cooks from neighboring states to compete in
a cook-off which is sanctioned
by the International
Chili Society (ICS) and the
winner will be crowned the
California State Champion.
The second competition will
include the local community and restaurant
cooks. Each competitor will be cooking on
the street and follow strict guidelines.
Because the event is so popular, Arlington
Business Partnership is bringing its
own chili because the chili tends to run low
during the event.
Along with the chili cook-off competition,
there will be a salsa competition. Contestants
will be submitting one pint of salsa
for judging. The salsa fresca, pico de gallo,
blended from fresh or canned ingredients, or
made from dried peppers. The salsa may be
red or green.
The Arlington Business Partnership is actively
seeking sponsors, chili cooks, vendors
car/cycle show participants, and volunteers.
swanky lounge with a huge dance floor, over the
top décor, and of course a five-foot disco ball.”
EVENT: MAY 26 - JUNE 24
Revitalized Koroneburg Renaissance
Festival returns to Corona
Koroneburg Renaissance Festival is
thrilled to once again open its doors
on weekends starting May 26 through
June 24. This is the second year under new
management for Koroneburg Renaissance
Festival, featuring new growth and entertainment
as the most interactive Renaissance
experience in the Corona, Eastvale, and
Norco communities.
“We’re continuing to build this wonderful
festival to make it bigger and better than
ever,” says Loyal Order of Reenactment
Enthusiasts Inc., Festival Director, David
Pulcifer. “We want people to experience the
Renaissance through real audience-participation.”
Loyal Order of Reenactment Enthusiasts
reopened the festival in 2017 in the hopes of
restoring a once great festival into a one-of-akind
gem.
As one of the only permanently built Renaissance
festivals in Southern California since
1998, the Koroneburg Renaissance Festival
features a unique and busy historical village
full of shops and a grand tourney field. Enjoy
shopping for handmade goods, listening to folk
music, or spend the day experiencing history
thanks to the festival’s new interactive games
and demonstrations.
Koroneburg Renaissance Festival begins
May 26 and runs on consecutive weekends
until June 24, including Memorial Day. The
festival is located at Riverview Recreation
the pleasure of President Theodore Roosevelt as
a visitor to his home, and an immigrant from
Europe who embraced the land of opportunity,
settled in Riverside and became a long-time
businessman here.
The tour will also include the Peter J. Weber
house – headquarters for Old Riverside Foundation
– open for touring. As in the past, Weber’s
son, Peter N. Weber, will be on hand explaining
his days living there and answering questions.
Outside the Weber House will again be the
Restoration Faire & Vintage Mercantile, featuring
craftsmen who specialize in vintage-sensitive
wrought iron, renovation consultation, tile,
plaster work, and roofing. Vendors will offer antiques,
linens, jewelry, décor, and clay creations
