Arthropolooza
The ultimate bugfest at the
County Museum
As Valentine’s Day approaches, isn’t
it time to give some thought about
relationships – among insects? On the
weekend of Feb. 17 and 18 between noon
and 4pm the San Bernardino County Museum
will explore love bugs and bad romances
during Arthropolooza! The Ultimate Bugfest.
Discover the fascinating world of arthropods—insects,
arachnids, myriapods, and
more. At the same time, activities and presentations
will look at love from a whole new
perspective: symbiotic relationships. Parasites
need love, too!
Special guests will be on hand to display
and answer questions about beneficial
insects—and pests! An entomologist at the
University of California at Riverside will talk
about the devastating Asian citrus psyllid pest,
its associated bacterial disease, and how the
public can help protect the citrus industry.
The UCR Entomology Department will set
up interactive activities. Master Gardeners will
share information on pollinators and about
gardening for butterflies and beneficial insects.
On Saturday only, San Bernardino County
Environmental Health Services will provide information
about mosquito and vector control.
Family fun activities include insect games,
take-home creepy-crawly craft creations,
insect stories and activities, and live insect
encounters in the museum’s courtyard and
Exploration Station. At the Museum Store
visitors can purchase a variety of insect-related
merchandise, from the ever-popular icky rubber
bugs to insect books, toys, and posters.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at 2024
Orange Tree Lane, at the California Street exit
from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is
open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9am to
5pm. General admission is $10 (adult), $8 (military
or senior), $7 (student), and $5 (child aged 5 to
12). Children under five and Museum Association
members are admitted free. Parking is free. For more
information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org. The
museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. IER
Celebrating 15 Years
Of Bookselling
RIVERSIDE’S DOWNTOWN
BOOKSTORE IS READY
FOR 2018
By Nadia and Vera Lee
Co-owners, Downtowne Bookstore
BOOK BOSSES: Nadia and Vera Lee, owners of Downtowne Bookstore.
One more great year, another great opportunity
to add a bit of spice to the wonderful
atmosphere that is downtown Riverside.
This year our Christmas tree gained a few more
owls. Last year we ended with 125. This year it
was more than 130. Thank you to all who donated
to this endeavor. The count for the owls in
the rest of the store surpassed 300 - again, thank
you, all of you. We love them all!
Our philosophy section has been plumped up,
and the children's section, though always in flux,
is still very healthy.
We have started making special internet
orders for items we do not have in the store. It
is a service for people who do not have a credit
or debit card, or do not want their numbers
out in the ethernet, or do not have a computer
and want someone else to do the work for
them. The trade tickets are acceptable payment
for these orders. We charge an additional
16% plus tax, but you know what you will be
getting and when.
Come drop by and visit us. Our knowledge
of the building, previous businesses before being
a bookstore, are limited, but our knowledge of
books - with the assistance of our trusted computer
- can be extensive. I love a challenge!
The Downtown Bookstore is located in the heart
of Downtown Riverside at 3582 Main St. For more
THE 2018 RIVERSIDE DICKENS FESTIVAL
The Downtown Tradition
Celebrates 25 Years Of Wit
And Wisdom
In 1992, Joan Patton, Carolyn Grant, and The Friends of the
Library board conceived the idea of a three-day festival. After a
year and a half and hundreds of hours later, the Riverside Dickens
Festival was born on a hot Saturday afternoon in September 1993 on
the downtown library lawn. In 1994, Riverside Dickens Festival, Inc.
was established as a nonprofit organization.
Why Dickens? Charles Dickens was the most influential and
famous writer of the19th century. He made a difference in changing
society and making a better world in which to live. The festival would
highlight the library and encourage reading, promote literacy, and
enjoyment of the dramatic and cultural arts by the general public.
Over the years, through the dedicated work of hundreds of volunteers
and the generous financial contributions of individuals, businesses,
the city, and county, the festival has grown to a Friday night
kick-off at Mr. Pickwick’s Pub Night, two full days of activities on
Saturday and Sunday with Mr. Fezziwig’s Ball on Saturday night, and
ending on Sunday evening with the Evensong musical program.
The 25th Riverside Dickens Festival takes place on February 24
and 25 at historic Downtown Riverside on the Pedestrian Mall between
University Avenue and Eleventh Street. For more information,
go online to www.dickensfest.com or call (951) 781-3168.
February, 2018 Inland Entertainment Review
“Nobody does it better than Jeffrey,” Todd
Vigiletti, Executive Producer at Center Stage,
said. “Jeffrey and I have been friends for a long
time and when we decided to add the show at
the theater, I knew we could only do it if we had
him. He is not only an amazingly talented person,
but a genuinely nice guy and a true joy to
work with. I wanted our cast members to have
the opportunity to work with someone who has
really ‘been there and done that’.”
Smokey Joe’s features 40 great hit songs
including “Charlie Brown”, “Yakety Yak”, “Poison
Ivy, “Spanish Harlem”, “Stand By Me” and
many more!
Smokey Joe’s Café runs February 9th – March 4th at the
theater.
SINGING IN THE RAIN
We are not sure if in California that “April
showers bring May flowers” but we do know
that April will bring Singing in the Rain to Center
Stage, April 6 th – April 29 th . One of the most
beloved musicals of all time will come to life at
Center Stage.
This show is sure to be a hit as these classic
characters come to life in the theater’s intimate
setting. There are not too many places that you
can see a full scale musical in such a beautiful
and intimate setting. The burning question is
“will you make it rain?”
“The truth is we do not know yet,” said Vigiletti.
“We are looking into that, we keep joking
that we are going to give the front row squirt
bottles to spray onto the stage. We hope people
will just come out and see for themselves.”
Singing in the Rain features songs such as
“Good Morning”, “Make Em Laugh”, “You
Are My Lucky Star”, “Singing in the Rain”, and
many more.
Singing In The Rain runs April 6th - April 29th.
TIBBIES VIVA LAS VEGAS
Looking for a different kind of theatrical
experience? You have found it. Center Stage is
proud to present TIBBIES VIVA LAS VEGAS.
This show is dedicated to the artists and variety
shows that have graced the Las Vegas stages over
the past 75 years.
Another thing that makes the TIBBIES
shows such a special experience is the fact that
the talented performers in the show are also
your servers for the evening, so after they serve
you a delicious dinner, they trade in their aprons
for amazing costumes and take to the stage!
“This element really makes the entire event
interactive,” Vigiletti said. “The audience gets a
chance to know the performers before the show
begins and it makes them feel like they have a
family member to cheer for up on the stage”.
VIVA LAS VEGAS runs May 11- June 17 th .
ANNIE
Finally in July Center Stage is proud to
partner with IVRT (Inland Valley Repertory
Theater) for a production of Annie . This show
is great for the entire family and is sure to sell
out.
“We are so thrilled to collaborate with IVRT
at our theater. Bringing our teams together
makes perfect sense and we are looking forward
to welcoming the IVRT family of patrons and
theater lovers to Center Stage,” said Todd.
The show runs two weeks only July 13 th – July 22 nd .
TIBBIES Center Stage Theater in Fontana
The greatest collaboration
against racism in American
History before the Civil
Rights Movement was The Underground
Railroad, in which persons
of all ethnic backgrounds, from
North and South, came together to
help escaped slaves make their way
to free territory.
MainStreet Theatre Company
begins 2018 with the West Coast
premiere of Oh Freedom! which
celebrates the men and women
who were active in the fight against
slavery, using stories and songs
from the period. Young people
will be introduced to some of the
legends of the Movement, such
as Harriet Tubman and Harriet
Beecher Stowe, as well as other
lesser known heroes. The production
is geared toward everyone,
including children as young as 10.
Oh Freedom! is directed by
Saundra McClain, with Musical
Direction by Janice Rodgers
Wainwright.
The production’s four versatile
actors are Jennifer Cannon, Charles
McCoy, Elayn J. Taylor, and Mark
If I Cannot Inspire Love,
Frankenstein’s
Monster Incites
Chaos on the Barnes
Stage this Spring
“I, the miserable and
the abandoned, am an
abomination, to be spurned at,
and kicked, and trampled on.”
– The Monster
Frankenstein, based on the original masterpiece
by Mary Shelley, is a tale of horror
not about a mindless beast, but of a creation
longing for acceptance and companionship.
This fresh perspective on the life of Dr.
Victor Frankenstein is a chilling story of great
triumph and the gravest tragedy that occurs
as a result, forcing us to ask: Is it nature or
nurture that truly makes one a monster?
For his adaptation of Frankenstein,
CSUSB theater arts professor and director
Tom Provenzano was influenced by stylized
graphic novels, with the design team drawing
inspiration from acclaimed comic artists
such as Bernie Wrightson (“Swamp Thing”),
Mike Mignola (“Hellboy”), and Dave McKean
(“Sandman”), bringing something truly special
and unique to the theater stage.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein will rise on the
CSUSB Barnes Theatre stage March 9, 10, 15,
16 and 17 at 8pm, March 11 and 18 at 2pm.
Individual and season tickets can be
purchased from the CSUSB Theatre Arts Box
Office, or online at theatre.csusb.edu. Individual
tickets are $6 for students and children
under 17; $12 for faculty, staff, senior citizens,
and military; $15 for adults. Performances
take place in the Ronald E. Barnes Theatre on
the CSUSB campus. Parking at CSUSB is $6
Monday-Friday and $3 on the weekend.
In the Enchanted Garden, a poisonous witch has been waiting hundreds of years for
the right man to stumble into her lair. To her delight a prince arrives, but when he
refuses to be her husband, she turns him into the visage of a beast. He must stay in
her wintry garden forever, that is, until either he marries her, or until a beautiful maiden
falls in love with him. Don’t miss this charming adaptation of a classic story!
Temecula Valley Symphony’s Concert Season
Including “Classical Mystery
Tour” the World’s Premier
Beatles Tribute, Slated for
March 17 th !
The Temecula Valley Symphony heads into
its 2018 season conducted by Music Director
John Mario, an internationally known
conductor and opera coach. Per Alana Joos,
Managing and Artistic Director, “Audiences
love his humor and program notes delivered live
from the podium, providing crafty anecdotes
about each piece or composer. Patrons enjoy our
diverse programming that includes everything
from the traditional classics, to pops, and epic
works from major motion pictures. Variety is
key to our successful performances. I sum up
our concerts as Symphonic Music with A New
Twist!”
February 10, at 2pm the Symphony will
present “BOLD & BRASSY…SWEET &
SASSY” opening with Copland’s Fanfare for the
Common Man. Kate Prestia-Schaub, flutist, will
perform Carmen Fantasy for Flute and Orchestra.
Two Bagatelles features the brass and percussion
section and the TVS Woodwind Quintet will
perform Sextet for Piano & Woodwind Quintet by
Poulenc. Classical fans will enjoy Divertimento
No. 2 in D major, K.131 by Mozart, performed
by a chamber orchestra and their outstanding
horn section and Serenade to Music by Ralph
Vaughan Williams.
The world’s premier Beatles Tribute,
“CLASSICAL MYSTERY TOUR,” will
highlight the season on March 17, at 2pm.
They’ve performed with many major symphonies
and now Classical Mystery Tour is coming
to Temecula! The four musicians in Classical
Mystery Tour look and sound just like The
Beatles, but Classical Mystery Tour is more than
just a rock concert. The show presents more
than two dozen Beatles tunes performed exactly
as they were originally recorded. Hear “Penny
Lane” with a live trumpet section, experience
the beauty of “Yesterday” with an acoustic guitar
and string quartet, enjoy the classical/rock blend
on “I Am the Walrus,” and relish the cascading
crescendos on “A Day in the Life.” From early
Beatles music on through the solo years, Classical
Mystery Tour is the best of The Beatles like
you’ve never heard them before. You might say
it’s the best show the Beatles never did!
“MEDITERRANEAN ODYSSEY” will
feature two Spanish Dancers on April 14, at
2pm and the Season Finale concert May 19,
at 2pm “CHAMPIONS” showcases the Symphony
& Chorus on Verdi’s Triumphal March
from Aida with five opera soloists, plus some
movie soundtrack favorites.
On February 10th
Visit the Lincoln Memorial Shrine on
Saturday, February 10, for the 46th annual
Open House. The event will begin at
11am and run until 3pm in Smiley Park in Redlands
and will feature an array of new exhibits in
the museum and displays by Civil War reenactor
groups throughout the park.
The Open House will once again join forces
with the Lincoln Pilgrimage, a program hosted by
the Grayback District of California Inland Empire
Council, Boy Scouts of America since 1940.
This year’s new exhibitions will include
additions to the Shrine collections related to
the experiences of enslaved people and the role
of slavery in the Civil War, the
Southern perspective during the
war, and Abraham Lincoln as a
lawyer and international statesman.
Visitors will be treated to
live music and games.
In addition to new exhibits,
the Open House will also
feature dozens of Civil War
re-enactors, including artillery
demonstrations by the 1st
Pennsylvania Light Artillery, members of the 7th
Michigan Volunteer cavalry on horseback, a display
on Civil War surgery by Dr. Malarkey, and
Mr. Lincoln presenter Robert Broski presenting
a stirring rendition of the Gettysburg Address.
The Inland Empire LEGO User Group will
also return to display their LEGO Civil War
battle scene and Abraham Lincoln LEGO figure.
“The Open House grows every year and we
are always delighted to see how many people
join us to celebrate President Lincoln and commemorate
the Civil War,” said Shrine Associate
Archivist Maria Carrillo.
The Lincoln Memorial Shrine is the only
institution in the west focusing on Lincoln and
the American Civil War.
The museum is located at 125 W. Vine Street in
Redlands. Admission is free. For further information, call
Badge-carrying personnel get two-for-one lift tickets Wednesdays
(non-holiday) while enjoying inner tubing in the Southland at Big
Bear Snow Play.
Active law enforcement, fire, and military personnel buy one lift pass
and get another free every Wednesday at Big Bear Snow Play. Just show
proper ID each Wednesday and get a free lift ticket with the purchase of
a pass. It’s a $35 value.
“It’s our way of giving back to those who serve,” said Scott Voigt of
Big Bear Snow Play. Badge Days are available year-round when Big Bear
Speedway opens in April (weather permitting) for timed kart racing on a
Grand Prix-style track.
Big Bear Snow Play, once a ski area known as Rebel Ridge, offers
worldclass inner tubing on the longest runs in Southern California.
As the guns continue to blast jet streams of snow, Big Bear Snow Play
builds special features like whoop-di-doos and berms in addition to its
traditional downhill runs.
For after dark thrills Big Bear Snow Play last season debuted Glow
Tubing night sessions, as the runs are illuminated by changing strobe
lights that turn red, blue, yellow, and even black lights. Night Glow Tubing
is available on Fridays, Saturdays, and holiday periods from 5-9pm.
Getting to the top of all the snow is easy thanks to Magic Carpet
uphill lifts that families merely step on and off of. No uphill climb to tire
parents and kids out means they save all their energy for downhill fun
and get in all the runs they want.
Snow gets groomed nightly at Big Bear Snow Play to ensure the best
possible conditions for guests, who enjoy evenly-spread corduroy for
their downhill adventures. When it’s
time for a winter warm-up, head inside
the heated base lodge for familypriced
snack bar and video games
and there’s plenty of paved parking.
Big Bear Snow Play is open daily
for inner tubing from 10am-4pm.
All-day passes include tube rental
and Magic Carpet lift for $35.
After dark Glow Tubing sessions
Fridays, Saturdays, and holidays
from 5-9pm are priced at $30
as guests slide on fluorescent
tubes under alternative
color lights.
After 91 years of thrilling and exciting crowds of basketball fans
all over the world, the Harlem Globetrotters will bring their
2018 Amazing Feats of Basketball World Tour to the Inland
Empire in February.
The Harlem Globetrotters will take their show to a new level this
year by celebrating the special blend of basketball and entertainment
which has made the team iconic. The team’s upcoming performance
will showcase the high-flying, fun, and memory-making moments
that the Globetrotters are known for. The dribbling, the dunking,
and the shooting – don’t forget, they led all of basketball in 4-point
shots made in 2017 – will all be on full display during the 2018 tour.
The Globetrotters feature the world’s largest collection of elite dunkers, including six
players who have competed in the annual College Slam Dunk contest held during Final Four
weekend, a Guinness World Record holder for slam dunks, and the 2016 winner of the popular
TV show The Dunk King.
01
The high-flying dunks do not end with the players, as 2018 will also mark the debut of
the “Flying Globies” – an amazing acrobatic trampoline dunk team, which will defy gravity
during the game action with their exciting in-air stunts.
The Globetrotters show is unrivaled in the world of family entertainment, with all-star
Showmen like Big Easy Lofton, Hi-Lite Bruton, Ant Atkinson, and Hammer Harrison, as
well as fan favorites Firefly Fisher, Bull Bullard, Thunder Law, and Cheese Chisholm. To
match the growing popularity of the Globetrotters’ female stars, the team will feature four
female players – the largest female roster in team history – including TNT Lister, Ace Jackson,
Hoops Green, and Torch George.
Additionally, the 2018 tour marks the return of the Globetrotters’ longtime nemesis, the
Washington Generals. After a long-standing series which saw the Generals lose over 14,000
times, the team is back from a two-year hiatus to rebuild and refocus around one goal – to
beat the Globetrotters. After making its retooled debut this summer in the $2 million,
winner-take-all “The Basketball Tournament,” the new-and-improved Generals are out to
finally take down the Globetrotters – once and for all.
Prior to every game, the Globetrotters will bring fans closer than anywhere else in sports,
with an unmatched pregame fan interaction with its Magic Pass. This ticketed event allows
fans an exclusive opportunity to interact with the team’s stars on the court, shoot hoops, learn
tricks, and pose for pictures. After the game, Globetrotter stars will be on hand for additional
autograph and photo opportunities.
The Harlem Globetrotters are legendary worldwide, synonymous with one-of-a-kind family
entertainment and great basketball skills for the past 91 years. Throughout their history, the
Original Harlem Globetrotters have showcased their iconic talents in 123 countries and territories
on six continents, often breaking down cultural and societal barriers while providing fans
with their first-ever basketball experience. Proud inductees of the Naismith Memorial Basketball
Hall of Fame, the Globetrotters have entertained hundreds of millions of fans – among them
popes, kings, queens, and presidents – over nine thrilling decades. The American Red Cross is
the official charity of the Harlem Globetrotters. Sponsored by Entenmann’s Donuts, Ticket Galaxy,
and Baden Sports, Harlem Globetrotters International, Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of
Herschend Enterprises, the largest family-owned themed entertainment company in the U.S.
Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased at harlemglobetrotters.com and the arena box office.
