Auto Auction
McCormick’s Palm
Springs Collector
Car Auction To
Feature Movie Star
And ‘Sleeper Cars’
Nov. 17-19
Stunning cars ranging from Hollywood’s
silent movie era to the Rat Pack will be
featured at McCormick’s Palm Springs
Collector Car Auction on Nov. 17 -19.
Nearly 600 vehicles—including classics and
antiques, muscle cars and sport cars, trucks and
motorcycles—will draw thousands of lookers
and buyers to the weekend show on wheels.
The location is a six-acre site beside the
Palm Springs Convention Center near downtown,
about four blocks from McCormick’s
showroom located on Indian Canyon and
Amado Road. The weather in Palm Springs is
usually sunny and balmy on auction weekend.
After more than 30 years in the collectable
car auction business, Keith McCormick
noted a “resurgence in sleeper cars, including
the 1953-55 Corvettes, which have doubled in
price in the past two years. They are now highly
desirable, collectible cars.”
Here is a preview of a few collectable cars
in the upcoming auction. For more details and
photos, go to www.classic-carauction.com and
click on “featured cars.”
CHARLIE CHAPLIN’S PACKARD
(LOT #349)
A 1936 Packard LaBaron All Weather
Cabriolet, one of 622 produced, was purchased
from the estate of silent film star Charlie Chaplin,
according to records still being researched
and verified, McCormick said. It has 11,057
original miles, a strong V-12 engine, a threespeed
transmission and vacuum power assisted
manual brakes and clutch. Painted in Hunter
green, the restored car had a part in the movie,
“The Betsy” and has appeared in a Remington
Steel TV show.
DEAN MARTIN’S CADILLAC (LOT #83)
The late Dean Martin’s 1976 Cadillac Fleetwood
Brougham custom station wagon was
one of only 11 built by Traditional Coachworks
for the actor/singer and member of the famous
Frank Sinatra “rat pack.” The car comes with all
notarized and documented paper work on the
previous owners, including Martin. It has had
the same owner for the past 30 years.
1956 CHEVROLET CORVETTE ROADSTER
(LOT #266)
With a stunning Black Onyx exterior,
Venetian Red interior and black soft-top, this
frame-off fully restored California car has the
225hp dual-quad engine, Powerglide automatic
transmission, power windows, Wonder Bar radio,
windshield washer system, heater and amp
as well as defroster.
It is rare to see a ’56 Corvette with the
correct early engine components, including the
dual-quad carburetors, the rare oil pan with
passenger side dipstick, correct ignition shielding,
generator mounting bracket and super-rare
2-bolt exhaust manifolds.
1957 CHEVROLET NOMAD (LOT #353)
“It runs and drives beautifully,” says the
owner of this gorgeous show-condition car after
he completed a full nut-and-bolt restoration. It
has a 283 cubic inch V8 engine, 4-barrel carburetor,
Hydromatic transmission, power steering,
original Canyon Coral paint color, original
color interior, all powder coated undercarriage,
all original sheet metal, Coker radial tires and
much more.
1954 MERCURY MONTEREY SUN VALLEY,
(LOT #245)
This car has been driven only 2,500 miles
since a total body-off complete restoration costing
more than $100,000 (all receipts available).
The restoration started in 2010 and ended in
2014. Awards include “Best of Show” in classic
cars under the Stars and “Best in Class” in the
LaQuinta, CA Custom Car show.
G A R Y S I N I S E F O U N D A T I O N . O R G
Halloween Events
The Riverside Dickens Festival Presents
Tales From The Victorian Crypt
The Old West will come back to life—
more or less—-during the fourth annual
Tales from the Victorian Crypt event in
Riverside’s Historic Evergreen Memorial Cemetery,
at the corner of 14th Street and Pine,
on October 13 and 14.
The vault opens at 6pm; show starts
at 7pm. Tickets go fast, so buy ‘em while you
can.
The event is a fundraiser for The Riverside
Dickens Festival which celebrates its 25 year
Silver Jubilee this year, Feb. 24-25.
Clear the street for the sunset showdown
when Code of the West re-enacts haunted history
with a spectral shoot-out.
Hear untold tales from the days of saddles
and six-shooters when restless spirits tell their
unsettling stories: a cache of cursed gold; a
hanged man bent on revenge; a murdered
saloon girl demanding justice from beyond the
grave; and even a colonel in gray dabbling in
black magic.
Authors Ambrose Bierce and Edgar Allan
Poe will also be there to make sure that you
don’t get much sleep that night.
The Old West is still with us and there’s
lots of unfinished business. They don’t call
them “ghost towns” for nothing.
Tickets are $25 and will not be issued - a
guest list will be at gate. Seating is limited
and the event sells out quickly. Visit their
website at www.dickensfest.com to
purchase tickets or for more information. IER
German Beer In
Big Bear Lake
Ayinger Beer Enhances Big Bear Lake
Oktoberfest’s Authentic Bavarian Charm
Photos by Dan McKernan.
This year Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest adds yet another imported
German beer to its extensive beer menu, enhancing Southern
California’s number-one rated Oktoberfest. For the first
time ever Ayinger Brewery (pronounced Eye-ing-gr) in Bavaria,
just 16 miles from Germany’s original Munich celebration, has
its Oktoberfest-Märzen on tap at the 47th Annual Big Bear Lake
Oktoberfest (continuing through October 28). Ayinger has been
creating exquisite beers since 1878, and is well recognized through-
out Europe for its quality craftsmanship
in brewing beer.
“We’re proud to mention that we
are exclusively the only Oktoberfest
in California pouring Ayinger beer,”
said Monica Marini, director of Big
Bear Lake Oktoberfest. “Ayinger
beer has won numerous gold medals
and other awards at the World Beer
Championships and high-ranking
European beer festivals.”
Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest already
has a great reputation for serving a
wide selection of German beers such
as Spaten (lager and Oktoberfest),
Franziskaner, Warsteiner (pilsner and
dunkel), and Konig Ludwig, to name
a few. Ayinger Oktoberfest-Märzen
on tap adds even more Bavarian
charm to Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest.
The classic, seasonal lager has a rich,
deep golden color, a satisfying malty
fragrance, and a flavor that is the
essence of an authentic Bavarianfestival
lager with a clean finish from
long maturation.
Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest delivers
a genuine Deutschland-style
celebration with alpine scenery and
heritage that sincerely reflects the
spirit of the original Munich Oktoberfest.
There are two full service
bars located inside the Convention
Center and three different bier
gartens (beer gardens) outside, which
includes the Sports Garten, Wyatt’s
Bier Garten, and Warsteiner Bier
Garten. Also returning is the Craft
Haus, which provides a variety of
micro brews and craft beer, ideal for
beer connoisseurs.
The German beer served at Big
Bear Lake Oktoberfest is only a segment
of what makes it stand out as
one of the most genuine Oktoberfest
celebrations in America. The food
is authentic as well as the bands. In
fact, three different German bands
will perform in a six-week span of an
eight-weekend stretch that started
September 9 and ends October 28,
bringing the quintessential music of
Bavaria to Big Bear.
LIVE BANDS
Bands performing at this year’s
Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest includes
Goldeisen, a nine-piece band that
hails from Bavaria, performing
September 30 and October 1 and
October 6-8. Goldeisen has gained a
cult following in Southern Germany
because of two Oktoberfest hits on
the official Munich Oktoberfest’s
“Best Oktoberfest Hits” compilation.
The Aalbachtal Express, also
from Southern Germany, returns
to Big Bear for the third year in a
row, taking the stage October 14-15
and October 21-22. This 12-piece
band (the largest ever for Big Bear
Lake Oktoberfest) has grown a solid
reputation throughout Europe for its
authenticity and upbeat live shows.
All three German bands play a
unique blend of traditional German
16
polkas and sing-alongs mixed with classic rock,
country hits and dance-floor standards.
The band is to be determined for the final
date on October 28.
Every band that performs at Big Bear Lake
Oktoberfest creates the perfect vibe for a downto-earth
German celebration.
COMPETITIONS AND CONTESTS
Fun competitions and contests at Oktoberfest
include log sawing, stein carrying, shoot
and yodel, a version of beer pong, and stein
holding. Children’s fun and games include kiddy
mug holding matches and Midway carnivalstyle
games. Dance troupes perform customary
dances, the bratwurst and knockwurst is from
a German butcher in Los Angeles, and fresh
apple strudel as well as pretzels are delivered
weekly from a German bakery in Downey.
WYATT’S STAGE & MORE
Both original and cover bands play live rock
‘n’ roll, blues, and country on the outdoor Wyatt’s
Stage. The Chicken Dance is the definitive
favorite dance at Oktoberfest and always amusing.
Every weekend expect to see a huge dance
floor filled with hundreds of revelers clucking
away to the Chicken Dance.
POWER & CONTROL, CSUSB
THEATRE ARTS PRESENTS
THE 2017-2018 SEASON
New Plays, Shakespeare, Frankenstein’s Monster, and… wait, what’s its name!?!?
CSUSB’s Department of Theatre Arts
presents the 2017-2018 Season of Power
& Control that will take you from a
mysterious island of gods, to a madman’s laboratory,
into a musical town with … more than
a few fluid issues on the main stage.
THE STUDENT NEW PLAY SHOWCASE
CSUSB open its season in the Black Box
with the return of The Student New Play
Showcase. Featuring plays written by current
and former CSUSB students, the Showcase
allows their talented pool of emerging
playwrights the ability to test their work and
receive feedback from a live audience. Directed
by Carol Damgen, The Student New Play
Showcase will show, Oct. 19, 20 and 21 at
8pm, and Sunday, Oct. 22 at 2pm.
THE TEMPEST
“Hell is empty and all the devils are here.”
– Ferdinand
William Shakespeare’s classic, The Tempest,
splashes down on the Ronald E. Barnes
stage Nov. 10. Directed by department chair
professor Terry Donovan Smith, The Tempest
tells the tale of a royal family stranded on a
mysterious island ruled by Prospero, a magical,
deposed duke orchestrating an elaborate plan
to reclaim his lordship by marrying his daughter
off to the love-struck castaway Ferdinand,
while the other castaways plot to overthrow
him and take over the island.
This modern take on a true Shakespearean
classic will run Nov.10, 11, 16, 17 and 18 at
8pm, Nov. 12, 18 and 19 at 2pm.
FRANKENSTEIN
“I, the miserable and the abandoned, am an
abomination, to be spurned at,
and kicked, and trampled on.” – The Monster
Mary Shelley’s masterpiece Frankenstein
opens March 9, adapted and directed by professor
Tom Provenzano. Based on the original
story from Mary Shelley, this tale of horror
is not about a mindless beast, but a creation
longing for acceptance and companionship.
When Dr. Victor Frankenstein recounts the
chilling tale of his greatest triumph and the
gravest tragedies that occurred as a result, the
question must be asked: Is it nature or nurture
that truly makes one a monster?
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein will rise on the
Barnes Theatre stage March 9, 10, 15, 16, and
17 at 8pm, March 11 and 18 at 2pm.
URINETOWN
“Gosh, Daddy, I never realized large,
monopolizing corporations could
be such a force for good in the world!” –
Hope
It is a privilege to pee! On June 1, The
Ellen Weisser Endowed Theatre Showcase
flushes the 2017-2018 Season down with
the Tony Award winning musical Urinetown,
music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann, book and
lyrics by Greg Kotis, and directed by professor
Kathryn Ervin. There is a terrible water shortage
in the world and private toilets have been
banned. The private corporation Urine Good
Company, or UGC, controls water consumption
by charging the masses for use of public
facilities, and those that cause trouble are
sent to Urinetown never to be seen again. But
when the price to pee perpetually increases,
the people rebel!
With a total of eight performances, Urinetown
plays June 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9 at 8pm, with
matinee performances June 3, 9, and 10 at
2pm.
TICKETS
and military; $15 for adults. Performances
Riverside Children’s Theatre
Riverside Children’s Theatre
family favorite at Arlington High
School in Riverside. The production
runs Dec. 1 – 3 and Dec. 7-10.
The 60-minute musical is
based on the Broadway production
directed by Julie Taymor and the
1994 Disney film. The Riverside
Children’s Theatre cast contains
charismatic meerkat Timon, and loveable
warthog Pumbaa. To claim his rightful place
on the throne and save his beloved Pridelands,
Simba must find his inner strength
and confront his wicked Uncle Scar.
The Lion King JR. features classic
songs from the 1994 film such as
“Hakuna Matata” and the Academy
Award-winning “Can You Feel the
Love Tonight” as well as additional
songs penned for the Broadway production.
The production of Disney’s The Lion King JR.
is open to the public at Arlington High School.
