In My Day the ramblings of Hubert James In my day it was about this time of year that us kids first spotted the summer holidays on the horizon. Course, before we got to the 11 Plus we hadn‟t a care in the world. There was none of the pressure of constant testing or comparisons with other schools. If you lived in the town you automatically went to the town‟s infant and junior schools. The teachers were a lot more relax back then. Even the school bullies walked around with smiles on their faces and looked for imaginative ways to exercise their childish cruelty. The teachers had a chance to move away from the curriculum and include a bit of fun with the syllabus. There was usually a large dollop of artistic licence served up, which often meant an art project. The first one I remember involved Rock Salt. I expect you know that in them days salt came in brick form not cruet shaped. Mr Craddock the deputy head took responsibility for P.E. and Art. He managed to procure some bricks of salt and some blunt modelling tools then let us loose to model our favourite animal. The salt flew about like apple blossom on a windy day, which would have been alright but the lesson coincided with the arrival of our free milk. In my day we all had a third of pint each morning provided by a grateful nation and hardworking Friesians. This was pre UHT and MHT (Margaret Hilda Thatcher). On this particular morning the salt found its way into the milk bottles. The result was not a pleasant drink. So the next year Mr C adopted a different track. He got hold of some clay from Grayson and Perry‟s Quarry in Bozeat and we all had a go at throwing a pot. You can imagine how messy this could get. For most of us wearing an apron kept us pretty clean. However, some of the scrawnier, feeble seven year olds didn‟t have the strength to control a pound of wet clay. Again, Mr Craddock came up with a solution. He borrowed a few old farmers‟ smocks from the Farm Museum near Hollerton. They weren‟t quite up to the sort artists and Trawler men wear but they kept the frail kids clean. Unfortunately, those bullies got hold of them and at playtime bunged them back on the delicate flowers and threw mud pies at them. A hurtful and hateful attack on the innocent for humorous affect maybe, but we all kept our heads down when the big boys suggested a game of „Smock the Weak‟.
All Are Called T his month sees the ordination of a new group of deacons and priests in our Cathedral. There is a national shortage of clergy, and some of our recent parochial vacancies have taken longer to fill than is ideal, so we rejoice that men and women of all ages, and not least some younger men and women with a whole lifetime of ministry ahead of them, are coming forward to be ordained. Alongside those offering for stipendiary ministry, we are now seeing an upturn in those offering for self-supporting ministry too. We express our gratitude to those in training and to those to be ordained, and our congratulations to our vocations team and those responsible for our intern schemes, as their hard work bears fruit. Within the diocesan team, I carry a responsibility for the spiritual oversight of financial matters, and some of you will recognise that I was one of the signatories to a letter sent on behalf of the Diocesan Board of Finance to the parishes at the beginning of Lent, encouraging renewed efforts to bring in the level of parish share that our frontline clergy costs and our diocesan growth strategy require. I apologise to any who found the tone of that letter offensive, yet the overwhelming response has been positive and it has been both a relief and a joy to see an upturn in parish share payments, and again I want to use this opportunity to express gratitude for all the hard work and sacrificial giving that this represents. Clergy and laity alike, we are all called to play our part in the mission and ministry of the church, in proclaiming, by word and by deed, the good news of God‟s love for his world. Part of that responsibility includes finding the resources to fund that mission and ministry. Yet we are all called not simply to provide the resources to fund that mission and ministry, but to actively participate in it too. Eastern Orthodox Christians speak of “the liturgy after the liturgy”, the week-long work of God in which we are all called to participate. May the example of those kneeling before the Bishop to be ordained later this month, whether or not we are there in person to witness it happening, serve as an encouragement to us all to recognise our own vocations, our own calling to be active in the service of Our Lord, spreading his love and peace and joy amongst the communities to which we belong.
