A Dery <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Life</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Prophet</strong> <strong>Muhammad</strong><br />

glory], <strong>al</strong>hamd Iii/ah 'i.e. <strong>al</strong>l praise be to God], and Allah akbar 'i.e.<br />

God is Supreme].<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Prophet</strong> would then say the ma<strong>in</strong> supplications he<br />

<strong>al</strong>located for the morn<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong>se <strong>in</strong>clude: "As we start this morn<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>al</strong>l dom<strong>in</strong>ion belong to God. All praise be to Him. <strong>The</strong>re is no deity<br />

other than God, the One who has no partners.4 To him belong <strong>al</strong>l<br />

dom<strong>in</strong>ion and <strong>al</strong>l praise. He is able to accomplish everyth<strong>in</strong>g. My<br />

Lord, I appe<strong>al</strong> to You to grant me <strong>of</strong> the goodness <strong>of</strong> this day and<br />

the goodness <strong>of</strong> what it encompasses, and the goodness <strong>of</strong> what<br />

follows it. I seek shelter with You aga<strong>in</strong>st the evil <strong>of</strong> this day and<br />

what follows it. I seek refuge with You aga<strong>in</strong>st laz<strong>in</strong>ess and<br />

miserable conditions <strong>in</strong> old age . Protect me aga<strong>in</strong>st torment <strong>in</strong> hell<br />

and torment <strong>in</strong> the grave." He repeated these phrases <strong>in</strong> the<br />

even<strong>in</strong>gs, substitut<strong>in</strong>g the reference to the morn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>by</strong> a reference<br />

to the even<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

"My Lord, I pray to You to grant me wellbe<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this life and<br />

<strong>in</strong> the life to come. Grant me Your pardon and safety <strong>in</strong> my faith,<br />

life, fam ily and property. Give me shelter to cover my flaws and<br />

security to c<strong>al</strong>m my fears. Protect me from the front, back, right,<br />

left and above. I appe<strong>al</strong> to Your greatness that no danger should<br />

engulf me from beneath me." He did not omit to say this<br />

supplication <strong>in</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>g and even<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

His further supplication <strong>in</strong>cluded the follow<strong>in</strong>g: "My Lord,<br />

grant me good he<strong>al</strong>th <strong>in</strong> my body; <strong>in</strong> my hear<strong>in</strong>g; <strong>in</strong> my sight. <strong>The</strong>re<br />

is no deity other than You. My Lord, I seek Your shelter aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

disbelief and aga<strong>in</strong>st poverty; I seek Your shelter aga<strong>in</strong>st the<br />

torment <strong>in</strong> the grave. <strong>The</strong>re is no deity other than You." He<br />

repeated these phrases three times morn<strong>in</strong>g and even<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g this time, servants from <strong>al</strong>l over Mad<strong>in</strong>ah would come<br />

to the <strong>Prophet</strong> carry<strong>in</strong>g water conta<strong>in</strong>ers. <strong>The</strong>y want to have the<br />

<strong>Prophet</strong>'s bless<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> their water, request<strong>in</strong>g him to dip his hand <strong>in</strong><br />

their water. He put his hand <strong>in</strong> every conta<strong>in</strong>er presented to him.<br />

4 It should be noted that the emphasis on God's oneness is very strong <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Prophet</strong>'s<br />

supplications and glorifications <strong>of</strong> God. God's oneness is the centr<strong>al</strong> Islamic belief. Hence,<br />

it is stated very <strong>of</strong>ten. By repeat<strong>in</strong>g it so <strong>of</strong>ten a Muslim rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>al</strong>ways aware <strong>of</strong> the type<br />

<strong>of</strong> relation he or she has with God.<br />
