In the Streets <strong>of</strong> Mad<strong>in</strong>ah<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Prophet</strong>'s w<strong>al</strong>k was marked <strong>by</strong> strength and purpose.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re was noth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his w<strong>al</strong>k like the affected airs that we <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

see public figures put on. As he w<strong>al</strong>ked, he lifted his legs as if he<br />

was pulJ<strong>in</strong>g them <strong>of</strong>f the ground, and proceeded forward as though<br />

he was w<strong>al</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g down a slope. Whoever saw him re<strong>al</strong>ized that he<br />

was neither weak nor lazy. When he turned, he turned with <strong>al</strong>l his<br />

body. His companions w<strong>al</strong>ked either ahead or around him, but<br />

on her errands, without tak<strong>in</strong>g his hand <strong>of</strong>f her hand until she went<br />

back.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Prophet</strong> smiled whenever he met anyone. J arir ibn<br />

'<strong>Abd</strong>ullah said: "Whenever God's messenger met me he would<br />

smile to me."<br />

His was a radiant, welcom<strong>in</strong>g smile, giv<strong>in</strong>g the person meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

him a feel<strong>in</strong>g that it was speci<strong>al</strong> for him. J arir appears to have<br />

thought that the <strong>Prophet</strong> did that especi<strong>al</strong>ly for him and he was<br />

keen to report it <strong>in</strong> appreciation. In fact the <strong>Prophet</strong>
