City of Eureka to launch
community garden in July
By JESSICA MESZAROS
Eureka gardeners take note: the city
has officially begun arrangements for the
launch of its community garden.
The garden is to be located between
City Hall and Geggie Elementary off
Bald Hill Road.
“There were some concerns in regard
to aesthetics, some people didn’t want
it too close to Hwy. 109, but we also
wanted it in a nice area where it can
bring the community together, and
what better place than next to a school,
the police department and city hall?”
Alderman Carleen Murray [Ward 2]
asked.
According to Murray, the city already
has secured $17,000 in funds, which
the Board of Aldermen approved earlier
in the year and amended into the 2017
budget. The total size of the site is about
150-by-100 feet, though not every space
will be utilized immediately.
“We’ll do about half of the 150 feet for
fall, and then, we’ll extend it into spring
when we add the additional beds,” Murray
said.
According to Alderman Don Beckerle
[Ward 3], the city is tentatively planning
for the garden to have 50 beds available for
fall planting, with each space about 4-by-8
feet in size with a fee of $40 to $50 for the
year. In addition to individual beds, the city
also is in ongoing discussion with Geggie
Elementary in regard to kid-friendly areas
in the corner of the lot closest to the school.
“We’re hopefully going to work with
Geggie Elementary, and they’re very
excited to work with us and have a special
area of the garden for them,” Beckerle said
Site of Eureka’s planned community garden
The next step is for the Eureka Public
Works Department to begin running water
to the location in preparation for a work day
on July 10. On that day, volunteers will be
able to help city staff build bed boxes and
shovel soil in preparation for fall planting.
The city plans to use its website and
social media to keep residents up to date on
volunteering and reservation opportunities.
Volunteer recruitment begins in mid-June.
“Everyone will be hearing more about
the community garden in the upcoming
weeks as we start really reaching out to our
volunteer groups to get them motivated,”
Beckerle said.
Tracfone settlement donation approved
By JIM ERICKSON
The Chesterfield City Council has
decided – again – to give a portion of the
money it received from a class-action lawsuit
to the Missouri Municipal League’s
advocacy fund.
At its May 15 meeting, the council narrowly
approved contributing 5 percent of
the $30,847 Chesterfield received as its
share of the judgment against TracFone
Wireless. The money was to replenish the
league’s reserve for future litigation efforts.
The league represented 295 Missouri
municipalities in the successful lawsuit
brought against the prepaid wireless provider
when it refused to pay license taxes
on its services.
With Mayor Bob Nation absent from the
May 15 session, the council voted 4-4 on
a recommendation from its Finance and
Administration Committee to make the
$1,542 contribution to the league. Councilmember
Dan Hurt [Ward 3], serving as
mayor pro tem in Nation’s absence, then
voted as mayor to break the tie, and the recommendation
passed.
However, Hurt suggested the issue again
be considered at the council’s June 5 meeting
because he wasn’t comfortable with
voting both as a councilmember and as
mayor pro tem.
At the June 5 session, Councilmember
Ben Keathley [Ward 2] moved to rescind
the contribution and Councilmember Barbara
McGuinness [Ward 1] seconded the
motion. Both had opposed the contribution
at the earlier meeting.
However, in the June 5 vote, McGuinness
joined Hurt and councilmembers
Randy Logan [Ward 3], Guy Tilman [Ward
2] and Barry Flachsbart [Ward 1] in voting
against the motion to rescind. It lost with
only Keathley and Ward 4 councilmembers
Tom DeCampi and Michelle Ohley
voting for it.
