Soon after, the Prophet r received the following command from All\h:
“And warn your tribe of near kindred” (26:214).
In obedience to this, the Prophet r invited members of his extended
family to a meeting. There he presented the revealed faith. Before
anyone could stop him Ab[ Lahab, one of the Prophet’s uncles,
interrupted, ridiculed the message by saying, “I swear by All\h this is
evil. You must stop him before the others do.”
However, the loving uncle of the Prophet r, Ab[ ^\lib, swore to
protect his nephew for as long as his life permitted.
Sermon on Mount %af\
Shortly after this meeting, the Prophet r climbed Mount %af\, a hillock
situated near the Ka`bah, and called together all the tribes of Makkah.
Im\m al-Bukh\r| has reported the incident: “The Prophet r climbed
Mount %af\ and began to call, ‘O Ban| Fihr! O Ban| `Adiyy!’ Scores of
people gathered (upon hearing the call), and those who could not, sent
others on their behalf to see what it was. Ab[ Lahab and other leaders
of Quraysh came too.
The Prophet r posed a question (to them), ‘If I were to inform you that
behind this mountain there were horsemen ready to attack you, would
you believe me?’
’Yes,’ the people replied in unison, ‘We have never received anything
but truth from you.’
The Prophet r continued, ‘Then (listen, as) I am a warner to you
before the approach of a severe punishment.’
